  • Connect ps/2->usb keyboard to linux?

    I have a lovely ancient ergonomic keyboard (no name SK - 6000) connected via a DIN-ps/2 adapter to a ps/2-usb adapter to my docking station. After Grub it stops working. It takes either suspending and waking up or replugging it while Linux is running to get it to work. No extra kernel modules get loaded for this. When it works and I restart without power off, it will work immediately. Also, would you recommend getting a keyboard to use instead of the laptop's one? It seems like it would be awkward otherwise. It does not appear to be a hardware issue, as I am able to enter BIOS configuration with no issues. I've tried: 'Safe mode' 'Last known good configuration' Reinstalling the generic keyboard driver Removing all power sources and holding down the power button, as suggested by popular forums. What could the problem be, and what could I try?

  • Ubuntu 10.04 live cd keyboard problem.

    Today I downloaded the Ubuntu 10.04 x64 .iso but when trying it out in live cd the keyboard of both my laptop and a microsoft branded one didn't work. I was planning into installing Ubuntu in a partition but I couldn't even put my info in the installation process to do it. Is this a problem with the .iso or the driver? because I'm afraid that if I can actually go ahead with the installation then the keyboard won't work after that too.

    I am knew to this site and don't know if I'm doing this correctly. I've been asked to edit my original post so I deleted my original post and starting over. I don't know why it's so hard for everyone to understand what I'm trying to do. You guys are all geniuses when it comes to computers and I'm just starting out. I started out trying to use a shortcut to display the LOCAL AREA CONNECTION window on my desktop by creating a shortcut and assigning it CTRL + , (comma). Windows didn't like that so it added ALT which ended up being CTRL + ALT + ,. Since I couldn't figure out a way to eliminate ALT as part of the shortkey keys, I am now trying a different strategy and it's not working. my latest attempt is to run the following command; ^,:: Run, explorer:: {BA126ADB-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E} Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong? On my laptop it was a tremendous hassle to get OpenJDK to even run the application without it going black, and now on my desktop I don't have that problem. However, when I run the application, my keyboard becomes unresponsive and doesn't type at all. This is a really big problem because it's demands the use of a keyboard. It works as normal on my laptop though, and it works perfectly. But now on the desktop its completely useless. I don't know if there's like a keyboard driver I'm missing, but there shouldn't be because the keyboard runs flawlessly everywhere else. I'm using OpenJDK 6 because the 7 has the same 'black screen' I mentioned, so I need this to work within OpenJDK 6. Thanks so much in advance and I'll try to specify as many details as I can. M

  • Why is the US international keyboard layout on Ubuntu different?

    I have been using Linux on and off for 10 years, and more recently I have spent more time with OSX. But, I still remember that in the beginning I'd choose the US international keyboard layout and it would have exactly the same output as the Windows keyboard layout (and most recently, the OSX US international layout). However, a few years ago when I installed Ubuntu, I noticed that the cedilla wasn't printed anymore (ç or Ç). This is a combination of the following keys: ' + c. Instead, what I get is the c letter. When did it start to happen, and why the difference to the behavior on the other OSes? What puzzles me even more is that there is even an "US International alternative" keyboard layout, which prints exactly the same keys! So, what's it alternative to? This has been reported as a bug back to Canonical (can't find the link now), but the keyboard layout has never changed back to what I'd expect. I know the workarounds to fix it to what I need, but I just would like to know why/when it has become different.

  • Keyboard shortcut to minimize Remote Desktop

    Is there a way, using the keyboard, to switch from a maximized (full screen) Remote Desktop Connection back to the main computer? I have about 4 Remote Desktop connections that I am switching between and it would be nice to not have to go to the mouse each time I want to switch. I know I can press Ctrl+Alt+Break and that normalizes the remote desktop screen. That is close, but I would like a way to just minimize it (so I don't have to normalize-switch-maximize each time I want to switch screens)

    I noticed in screen shots of Unity the presence of the "Session Menu" indicator in the right corner of the top-panel. This menu drops down to offer Log Out, Hibernate, Restart, Shut Down, etc. I know the keyboard shortcuts are not complete yet. But are there plans to implement a shortcut for accessing this Session Menu (i.e., so users can log out, restart & shut down without having to use the mouse)? Further, will the shortcut allow navigation through the menu by just typing the first letter of the listed word (e.g., R for restart and S for shut down)?

  • Disabling the command enter shortcut on Mac Entourage.

    It seems like disabling a shortcut should not be such a big deal, but I cannot seem to be able to do it for any shortcuts and specifically not for the combination that I keep hitting by mistake, every single day. The smaller space bar makes it very easy to hit the command key by mistake, and the return is a commonly used key when typing. I keep sending important e-mails before I am done typing, or worse, before I am done editing. I do not necessarily want to disable all the shortcuts, but that one for sure. The choices for changing anything in Entourage seem very limited. [Entourage for Mac 2008. Version 12.2.8. (101117) ESD] It is easy enough just to hit "send." This short cut causes a lot more trouble than it saves. Help.

    Last night my laptop (samsung nc20 running XP) fell off the table and the screen cracked leaving me unable to see anything. I have arranged for a it to be repaired but want to make a back up of several folders before it gets sent away. I was planning to use my parents LG LCD tv as an external monitor so I can see what I am doing when copying things to but after plugging it in nothing seems to happen (works instantly on another laptop running vista) and hotkeys seem to be of no use at all.     Pressing the "windows key" and tab (Mod4+Tab) used to work similar to pressing Alt+Tab (which switches windows just like M$), but it showed a much better preview. Somehow I lost the shortcut and can't find it anymore. I've gone through the chaos in "System - Preferences - Keyboard Shortcuts" several times and the only thing I can see there is "Move between windows, using a popup window", whatever it means. I prefer the "fancier" switcher, how can I restore it?

I almost exclusively use the taskbar to navigate to files (i.e., I press the Win/meta key and start typing... my libraries and naming conventions make it pretty easy to get the correct file). Then I press enter and the file opens. Awesome. But sometimes I want to see the file in its folder (i.e., maybe I want to rename, move, copy, etc.). To do this I need to mouse/trackpad over and right click to get the "Open in file location" options. Is there another way, short of searching for the folder name instead? Is there a hotkey/shortcut for "Open file location"? Thanks!

    I am giving Unity a chance to win me over in Natty, but I admit I am a heavy Gnome Do user and Unity has remapped the Super+Space keyboard shortcut to show the Unity Launcher. I am not yet convinced with the new Unity Launcher and would like to keep using Gnome Do, at least until such time as I am convinced that the Unity launcher is as frictionless as Gnome Do. Is it possible to remap it to Gnome Do?

    I need a keyboard shortcut for Merge & Center. I'd like it to be Ctrl+Shift+M. I am unfamiliar with Macros as was suggested in another answer and when I go to Options, I can't find shortcuts...I tried to follow the Help info, but as was already answered the Excel Customize Ribbon doesn't have the same options that Word 2010 does. So, how do I go about it step by step? I know this is for superuser...and I'm not one...but I hope to be one some day. Please help me on the way. Thanks.
