  • Weird problem with Visual C++ 2010 Express

    This has happened before on my Vista Premium installation, and now it's happening on my Windows 7 Home Premium installation. Basically everytime I install Visual Studio Express 2010, it works fine for a random amount of time but then suddenly starts to hide from my sight -- that's the best way I can explain it. VS does not crash, and from what I can tell it does not freeze either; It continues to work, I can even "minimize" and "maximize" it; I simply cannot see it nor can I interact with it any meaningful way. Also: After the "crash" there are no logs in: Root\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Express - ENU. Nor any other files created at the time of the crash. There are no traces in the event viewer. The program seems to be functioning perfectly in the process manager. If I reinstall Visual C++, it works normally for a seemingly random period of time before going cookoo again. I am stumped. This has never happened to me before, with any other program. And yet I doubt it really is a problem with Visual C++; More like something general that seems to have picked on it for some reason. Still, after a clean install with a new OS, I'm kinda thinking there's something wrong here. Any help would be appreciated, altough I suspect that the answer to this question will make me feel embarassed. P.S. Not sure if it helps, but I think around the same time I started having problems (On both installations) with windows turning off the display when I leave the computer, and then seemingly crashing when it turns it on again -- in fact when I interact with it it seems to be responding to my commands without actually display anything.

  • One user sometimes gets an unknown certificate error opening Outlook

    Let me clarify a little. This isn't an unknown certificate error it's an unknown certificate error in so much as I can't figure out where the certificate comes from. This happens on a Win 7 Enterprise machine connecting to Exchange 2010 with Outlook 2010. The error he gets is that the root is not trusted because it's a self-signed cert. Take a look at this screenshot because even if I had generated this myself I wouldn't have put "SomeOrganizationalUnit" or "SomeCity" or "SomeState", etc. (Red block covers our domain name.) I'm a little concerned this is a symptom of a security breach. Exchange 2010 has three certificates installed but none of them are this certificate. They all have different expiration dates (one is expired) and different meta-data. edit: There are two scenarios that I see the certificate warning and one of them I can reliably repeat. When the user leaves his computer on over night Outlook pops the Security Warning window. I don't know what time this happens. Using Outlook Anywhere if I connect to Exchange externally via a cellular USB modem the Security Warning window will appear every time I close and reopen Outlook. Whether I say Yes or No does not make a difference on whether or not I can connect to Exchange and send/receive email. In other words, I can always connect to Exchange. I've checked my two Exchange servers and my Cisco router for a certificate that matches this one and I can't find it. edit 2: Here is a screenshot of the Security Alert window. (I've been calling it Security Warning... My mistake.) edit 3: I stopped seeing this error several weeks ago but I can't tie it to any single event (because I just sort of realized that warning had stopped showing up) but I think I found the source of the certificate. Last week I found out that the certificate on our website DomainA.com was invalid. I knew that our web admin had installed a valid certificate so when I look into the problem I found out I was being presented with the invalid certificate that this posting is in regards to. The Exchange server's domain is mail.DomainA.com so I can only guess that Outlook was passing this invalid certificate through as it did some kind of check on DomainA.com. This issue is still a mystery because the certificate warning stopped appearing several weeks ago whereas the invalid certificate issue on the website was only fixed last week. It ended up being a problem with the website control panel. The valid certificate was installed but not being served for some reason and instead the self-signed cert was being served.

    I have an Exchange 2010 UR3 deployment that I need to customize the OWA logon page for. I've created a new LGNTOPL.GIF file to replace the existing one in the folder: “C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\ClientAccess\Owa\14.3.158.1\themes\resources” When I bring up OWA, I still get the original “Outlook Web App” logo. I’ve searched and found a couple of other instances of LGNTOPL.GIF in the directories: “C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\ClientAccess\Owa\14.3.123.3\themes\resources” “C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\ClientAccess\Owa\14.3.146.0\themes\resources” “C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\ClientAccess\Owa\Current\themes\resources” I’ve replaced the LGNTOPL.GIF file in each of the above directories but got the same results. I’ve tried clearing my browser cache and even using multiple browsers from multiple PC’s but the same results. I’ve even tried making my GIF file the same pixel size as the original LGNTOPL.GIF logo but still the same results. I’ve tried restarting IIS on the CAS server and restarting the server but same results. Has something changed with Exchange 2010 UR3 when trying to customize OWA? I don't see anything documented about any change to OWA customization. Thanks

  • Outlook 2010 search not working after upgrade to windows 8

    After upgrading my computer to Windows 8 Outlook 2010 has stopped displaying search results. Normally you can enter a (part) of a word in the search box on top of the inbox list and it will show you result immediatly. Even mails allready visible on the screen are not found. Somebody familiar with this issue? Update: maybe relevant: I use an Google Apps Pro account. All mail is synced and locally available in Outlook 2010. I did not change this in any way while upgrading, it was working perfectly before. I can scroll through all the e-mails, new mails are coming in as expected. This morning I received two mails from a person by the name of Rosanne. When searching on her name in Outlook it gives me One (1) result, the last mail from today. Update 2: Rebuilding the index seemed to be working. But after another day it stopped working again. No results whatsoever in Outlook search. Rebuilding indexes every day is not an option as it takes several hours. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that I use Google Apps Pro. It acts like a Exchange server to outlook. In indexing options (configuration) I added the directories containg the PST from this service (mail is also synced locally)

  • Identifying Exchange 2010 regular process that is walking the mailbox database

    I have an Exchange 2010 server running on a SAN-backed platform. The platform does block-level backups based on a snapshot/incremental basis, that only capture changed data. I was surprised to see a regular period of time where the data changes were happening at a high, sustained rate. Due to the way this system works, that can lead to 1.2TB of stored data per month. The regularity implied a scheduled task, but it is not a fixed interval. It is approximately every 26-32hrs. The disks were performing read operations of ~5MB/s and write operations of ~4.5MB/s, for a period of 3-4hrs. The total written data was ~55-60GB. Reading on TechNet, I am wondering if the following is causing this: http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2011/12/14/database-maintenance-in-exchange-2010.aspx#checksumming The somewhat restrictive thing is that the process only happens at most once every 24 hours. I was able to investigate while it was running, finding the following: the process is store.exe it is working on the mailbox database files while running, it is generating .log files (in the mailbox database folder) consistent with database changes the mailbox database is ~60GB in size, which fits with the total data changes on each iteration I have currently switched to a fixed maintenance window, as a test. It's not clear whether this is the cause, as the symptoms fit, but are not conclusive. Does anyone have any suggestions for additional troubleshooting?

  • Schedule Auto Send & Receive in Microsoft Outlook

    If you use Outlook as your email client, you might want to schedule how often it checks for new messages. Today we show you how to schedule how often auto send/receive occurs. If you’re busy during the day and need to keep up with your emails, you might want want Outlook to check for new messages every few minutes. Here we’ll show how to schedule it in Office 2010, 2007, and 2003 for a busy inbox where you want to keep on top of your important emails. Outlook 2010 To schedule Auto Send/Receive in Outlook 2010, click on the File tab then Options. The Outlook Options window opens…click on Advanced and scroll down to Send and receive and click on the Send/Receive button. In the Send/Receive Groups window under Setting for group “All Accounts” check the box Schedule an automatic send/receive every…minutes. It is set to 30 minutes by default and you can change the minutes to whatever you want it to be. If you’re busy and want to keep up with your messages you can go as low as every one minute. You can also get to the Send/Receive groups by selecting Send/Receive tab on the Ribbon and then Define Send/Receive Groups. Outlook 2007 To select the send/receive time intervals in Outlook 2007, open Outlook and click on Tools \ Options. Click on the Mail Setup tab, check the box next to Send immediately when connected then the Send/Receive button.   Now change the schedule to automatically send/receive. You can also access the Send/Receive Groups section by going to Send/Receive > Send/Receive Settings and Define Send/Receive Groups. Outlook 2003 In Outlook 2003 click on Tool \ Options… Click on the Mail Setup tab then check Send immediately when connected, then the Send/receive button. Then set the amount of time between send/receive attempts. If you live out of Microsoft Outlook and want to keep up with messages, setting the automatic send/receive minutes will keep you up to date.   • 32-bit program using Office IFilters when 64-bit Office is installed

    64-bit Office installs 64-bit IFilters for its document types, but does not install 32-bit IFilters. Therefore, 32-bit programs that rely on IFilters cannot work with 64-bit Office. And although there is an option to download 32-bit IFilters from Microsoft, the installer will not run on a 64-bit machine, complaining about architecture mismatch. Is there any way to make 32-bit programs extract text from Office documents using IFilters when 64-bit Office is installed? Thanks.

Hosted servers, where you don’t run the servers, but you let a hosting company run dedicated servers. Multi-tenant, like SharePoint online – this is what I am talking about in this blog post. Also known as SaaS (Software as a Service). The advantages of a cloud solution are undeniable. Availability, (SharePoint line offers a 99.9% uptime SLA) Reliability. Cost. Due to economies of scale, and no need to hire specialized dedicated staff. Scalability. Security. Flexibility – grow or shrink as you need to. If you are seriously considering SharePoint 2010 in the cloud, there are some things you need to know about SharePoint online. What will work - OOTB Customization, collaboration features etc. will work SharePoint Designer 2010 is supported, so no code workflows will work Visual Studio sandbox solutions, client object model will work. What won’t work - SharePoint 2010 online cloud environment supports only sandbox solutions. BCS, business connectivity services is not supported in SharePoint online. What you can do however is to host your services in Azure, and call them using Silverlight. Custom timer jobs will not work. Long story short, get used to Sandbox solutions – and the new way of programming. Sandbox solutions are pretty damn good. Most of the complaints I have heard around sandbox solutions being too restrictive, are uninformed mechanisms of doing things mired in the ways of 2002. .. or you could just live in 2002 too.   • Office 2010 Client &ndash; Should I go with 32 bit or 64 bit?

    Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). As you know, Office 2010 client now comes in both 32 bit and 64 bit versions. The question is, should you go with 32 bit or 64 bit? 64 is bigger than 32 .. so 64 is better no? NO! Given a choice, or unless you have a very strong reason not to – GO WITH 32 bit. Why is that? Here is why - 32 bit apps actually work better on 64 bit OS’s in most scenarios due to WoW, and the additional 64 bit VLSW calculations. If you have 2007 installations to support, SharePoint designer 2010 cannot be used to work with SharePoint 2007 sites. So you will have to install SharePoint designer 2007 32bit side by side with SharePoint designer 2010 32 bit side by side. So you cannot mix and match 32 bit and 64 bit here. Of course you can virtualize and not have this problem to begin with :-D. 64 bit office will break many things on your SharePoint experience for that client – example, that fancy datasheet view won’t work on lists. 32 bit office apps don’t have this issue. There are some extreme situations where you DO want 64 bit client apps though. Specifically if you have HUGE excel sheets to work with, then 64 bit office client excel is much better than the equivalent 32 bit excel. Comment on the article ....

  • Cannot connect Office 365 email with Outlook 2010

    I have an email address of the form [email protected] that I am accessing through this site. I had connected my email to Outlook 2010 and it was working fine. Recently, it started requesting credentials every time I logged in, without connecting to the email server even after entering the correct password. I had already decided to reinstall Windows 7, so I thought that would also fix this problem. Unfortunately it did not. I tried the troubleshoot function embedded in the Office 365 capabilities, but it did not find anything wrong. I suspect that one possible source of this problem could be the fact that in the control panel it states Mail (32-bit) while Windows is 64-bit (office is 32 as well). In addition when trying to remove an email account from the list it remains there unaffected. Does anybody know what should I do in order to fix this problem?

    I have been breaking my head for several days now trying to install Microsoft office 2010 through group policy. Unfortunately Microsoft decided it would be fun to release office without an MSI and so I either Need to create an msi for it or Need to install it through a logon script that would run the setup.exe from a network location. Any advise would be greatlly appreciated. I tried to create a script but even though I double click it and it runs properly, it does not seem to kick in when users log in or when the machine is turned on. Also is there an easy way to create an msi?

  • Importing orphaned Outlook 2010 OST file

    I have a problem with Outlook 2010 and OST files. First my exhange hosting company deleted my exchange account by accident. They've created it on another server, but can't get the data back. Now I did make a copy of the \users\name\appdata\local\outlook directory. So I have the original OST files. I decided to switch hosts to Office 365. During this, I stupidly deleted my account from within outlook and recreated it to point to Office 365. And only then did I learn that you can't import from OST files. Edited to clarify: I have a complete backup of the pc. Which folders would I need to restore to ensure that I can get exhange back it's previous state? I'm prepared to to a complete restore if necessary, but would prefer to localise the changes.

  • Unable to run Microsoft Office 2010 install file

    This problem began when I noticed that the icons in the Windows 7 task bar for MS Word and Outlook were generic. I rebuilt the icon cache. Still not the right icons, but not the generic "document" icons either, and both are identical (to each other). The two programs seem to be working OK. So then I tried to repair MS Office. I ran the setup file. It extracts the files, I get the splash screen, and then the message, "Setup has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." with a "Close program" button. Microsoft does not notify me about a solution. What I have tried: 1. running two other copies of the setup program; 2. doing an in-place re-install of Windows 7.

  • JavaScript Intellisense Improvements with VS 2010

    This is the twentieth in a series of blog posts I’m doing on the upcoming VS 2010 and .NET 4 release.  Today’s blog post covers some of the nice improvements coming with JavaScript intellisense with VS 2010 and the free Visual Web Developer 2010 Express.  You’ll find with VS 2010 that JavaScript Intellisense loads much faster for large script files and with large libraries, and that it now provides statement completion support for more advanced scenarios compared to previous versions of Visual Studio. Follow me at: twitter.com/scottgu] Improved JavaScript Intellisense Providing Intellisense for a dynamic language like JavaScript is more involved than doing so with a statically typed language like VB or C#.  Correctly inferring the shape and structure of variables, methods, etc is pretty much impossible without pseudo-executing the actual code itself – since JavaScript as a language is flexible enough to dynamically modify and morph these things at runtime.  VS 2010’s JavaScript code editor now has the smarts to perform this type of pseudo-code execution as you type – which is how its intellisense completion is kept accurate and complete.  Below is a simple walkthrough that shows off how rich and flexible it is with the final release. Scenario 1: Basic Type Inference When you declare a variable in JavaScript you do not have to declare its type.  Instead, the type of the variable is based on the value assigned to it.  Because VS 2010 pseudo-executes the code within the editor, it can dynamically infer the type of a variable, and provide the appropriate code intellisense based on the value assigned to a variable. For example, notice below how VS 2010 provides statement completion for a string (because we assigned a string to the “foo” variable): If we later assign a numeric value to “foo” the statement completion (after this assignment) automatically changes to provide intellisense for a number: Scenario 2: Intellisense When Manipulating Browser Objects It is pretty common with JavaScript to manipulate the DOM of a page, as well as work against browser objects available on the client.  Previous versions of Visual Studio would provide JavaScript statement completion against the standard browser objects – but didn’t provide much help with more advanced scenarios (like creating dynamic variables and methods).  VS 2010’s pseudo-execution of code within the editor now allows us to provide rich intellisense for a much broader set of scenarios. For example, below we are using the browser’s window object to create a global variable named “bar”.  Notice how we can now get intellisense (with correct type inference for a string) with VS 2010 when we later try and use it: When we assign the “bar” variable as a number (instead of as a string) the VS 2010 intellisense engine correctly infers its type and modifies statement completion appropriately to be that of a number instead: Scenario 3: Showing Off Because VS 2010 is psudo-executing code within the editor, it is able to handle a bunch of scenarios (both practical and wacky) that you throw at it – and is still able to provide accurate type inference and intellisense. For example, below we are using a for-loop and the browser’s window object to dynamically create and name multiple dynamic variables (bar1, bar2, bar3…bar9).  Notice how the editor’s intellisense engine identifies and provides statement completion for them: Because variables added via the browser’s window object are also global variables – they also now show up in the global variable intellisense drop-down as well: Better yet – type inference is still fully supported.  So if we assign a string to a dynamically named variable we will get type inference for a string.  If we assign a number we’ll get type inference for a number.  Just for fun (and to show off!) we could adjust our for-loop to assign a string for even numbered variables (bar2, bar4, bar6, etc) and assign a number for odd numbered variables (bar1, bar3, bar5, etc): Notice above how we get statement completion for a string for the “bar2” variable.  Notice below how for “bar1” we get statement completion for a number:   This isn’t just a cool pet trick While the above example is a bit contrived, the approach of dynamically creating variables, methods and event handlers on the fly is pretty common with many Javascript libraries.  Many of the more popular libraries use these techniques to keep the size of script library downloads as small as possible.  VS 2010’s support for parsing and pseudo-executing libraries that use these techniques ensures that you get better code Intellisense out of the box when programming against them. Summary Visual Studio 2010 (and the free Visual Web Developer 2010 Express) now provide much richer JavaScript intellisense support.  This support works with pretty much all popular JavaScript libraries.  It should help provide a much better development experience when coding client-side JavaScript and enabling AJAX scenarios within your ASP.NET applications.   • Microsoft deployment toolkit 2010 failure message

    Hi all I am having a problem with the deployment of Windows 7 from a server with Microsoft Toolkit 2010. When deployment has finished I get a Windows error report which shows following message. FAILURE (Er): 70: CreateObject(Microsoft.BDD.Utility) - Permission denied Litetouch deployment failed, Return Code = - 2147023589 0x8007051B I don't get it what Microsoft.BDD.Utility is exactly and when this utility is used (Tasksequence?) ? Can anyone help me on this problem?

    I'm attempting to install Office 2010 Pro Plus on a netbook running WWindows 7 Starter but the installer prompts for a file location: Setup cannot find ProPlusr.WW\ProPrWW2.cab. Browse to a valid installation source, and then click OK. I checked the installation files and can see that the file is present. I selected the folder and clicked OK, but the installer keeps prompting for the file. Has anyone else encountered this?

My family and friends (as opposed to work) I generally send with no subject, and it is REALLY annoying that it constantly asks me "Really send with no subject?" How can I turn this off?? Thanks!

  • DPM 2010 PowerShell Script to Easily Restore Multiple Files

    I’ve got what I thought would be a simple task with Data Protection Manager 2010 that is turning out to be quite frustrating. I have a file server on one server and it is the only server in a protection group. This file server is the repository for a document management application which stores the files according to the data within a SQL database. Sometimes users inadvertently delete files from within our application and we need to restore them. We have all the information needed to restore the files to include the file name, the folder that the file was stored in and the exact date that the file was deleted. It is easy for me to restore the file from within the DPM console since we have a recovery point created every day, I simply go to the day before the delete, browse to the proper folder and restore the file. The problem is that using the DPM console, the cumbersome wizard requires about 20 mouse clicks to restore a single file and it takes 2-4 minutes to get through all the windows. This becomes very irritating when a client needs 100’s of files restored… it takes all day of redundant mouse clicks to restore the files. Therefore, I want to use a PowerShell script (and I’m a novice at PowerShell) to automate this process. I want to be able to create a script that I pass in a file name, a folder, a recovery point date (and a protection group/server name if needed) and simply have the file restored back to its original location with some sort of success/failure notification. I thought it was a simple basic task of a backup solution, but I am having a heck of a time finding the right code. I have seen the sample code at http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/how-to-use-a-windows-powershell-script-to-recover-an-item-in-data-protection-manager.aspx that I have tried to follow, but it doesn’t accomplish what I really want to do (it’s too simplistic) and there are errors in the sample code. Therefore, I would like to get some help writing a script to restore these files. An example of the known values to restore the data are: DPM Server: BACKUP01 Protection Group: Document Repository Data Protected Server: FILER01 File Path: R:\DocumentRepository\ToBackup\ClientName\Repository\2010\07\24\filename.pdf Date Deleted: 8/2/2010 (last recovery point = 8/1/2010) Bonus Points: If you can help me not only create this script, but also show me how to automate by providing a text file with the above information that the PowerShell script loops through, or even better, is able to query our SQL server for the needed data, then I would be more than willing to pay for this development.
