  • [C#]How to introduce retry logic into LINQ to SQL to deal with timeouts?

    - by codemonkie
    I need to find ways to add retry mechanism to my DB calls in case of timeouts, LINQ to SQL is used to call some sprocs in my code... using (MyDataContext dc = new MyDataContext()) { int result = -1; //denote failure int count = 0; while ((result < 0) && (count < MAX_RETRIES)) { result = dc.myStoredProc1(...); count++; } result = -1; count = 0; while ((result < 0) && (count < MAX_RETRIES)) { result = dc.myStoredProc2(...); count++; } ... ... } Not sure if the code above is right or posed any complications. It'll be nice to throw an exception after MAX_RETRIES has reached, but I dunno how and where to throw them appropriately :-) Any helps appreciated.

  • Important question about linq to SQL performance on high loaded web applications

    - by Alex
    I started working with linq to SQL several weeks ago. I got really tired of working with SQL server directly through the SQL queries (sqldatareader, sqlcommand and all this good stuff).  After hearing about linq to SQL and mvc I quickly moved all my projects to these technologies. I expected linq to SQL work slower but it suprisongly turned out to be pretty fast, primarily because I always forgot to close my connections when using datareaders. Now I don't have to worry about it. But there's one problem that really bothers me. There's one page that's requested thousands of times a day. The system gets data in the beginning, works with it and updates it. Primarily the updates are ++ @ -- (increase and decrease values). I used to do it like this UPDATE table SET value=value+1 WHERE ID=@I'd It worked with no problems obviously. But with linq to SQL the data is taken in the beginning, moved to the class, changed and then saved. Stats.registeredusers++; Db.submitchanges(); Let's say there were 100 000 users. Linq will say "let it be 100 001" instead of "let it be increased by 1". But if there value of users has already been increased (that happens in my site all the time) then linq will be like oops, this value is already 100 001. Whatever I'll throw an exception" You can change this behavior so that it won't throw an exception but it still will not set the value to 100 002. Like I said, it happened with me all the time. The stas value was increased twice a second on average. I simply had to rewrite this chunk of code with classic ado net. So my question is how can you solve the problem with linq

  • LINQ Query using UDF that receives parameters from the query

    - by Ben Fidge
    I need help using a UDF in a LINQ which calculates a users position from a fixed point. int pointX = 567, int pointY = 534; // random points on a square grid var q = from n in _context.Users join m in _context.GetUserDistance(n.posY, n.posY, pointX, pointY, n.UserId) on n.UserId equals m.UserId select new User() { PosX = n.PosX, PosY = n.PosY, Distance = m.Distance, Name = n.Name, UserId = n.UserId }; The GetUserDistance is just a UDF that returns a single row in a TVP with that users distance from the points deisgnated in pointX and pointY variables, and the designer generates the following for it: [global::System.Data.Linq.Mapping.FunctionAttribute(Name="dbo.GetUserDistance", IsComposable=true)] public IQueryable<GetUserDistanceResult> GetUserDistance([global::System.Data.Linq.Mapping.ParameterAttribute(Name="X1", DbType="Int")] System.Nullable<int> x1, [global::System.Data.Linq.Mapping.ParameterAttribute(Name="X2", DbType="Int")] System.Nullable<int> x2, [global::System.Data.Linq.Mapping.ParameterAttribute(Name="Y1", DbType="Int")] System.Nullable<int> y1, [global::System.Data.Linq.Mapping.ParameterAttribute(Name="Y2", DbType="Int")] System.Nullable<int> y2, [global::System.Data.Linq.Mapping.ParameterAttribute(Name="UserId", DbType="Int")] System.Nullable<int> userId) { return this.CreateMethodCallQuery<GetUserDistanceResult>(this, ((MethodInfo)(MethodInfo.GetCurrentMethod())), x1, x2, y1, y2, userId); } when i try to compile i get The name 'n' does not exist in the current context

  • Linq-to-sql Compiled Query returns object NOT belonging to submitted DataContext ?

    - by Vladimir Kojic
    Compiled query: public static class Machines { public static readonly Func<OperationalDataContext, short, Machine> QueryMachineById = CompiledQuery.Compile((OperationalDataContext db, short machineID) => db.Machines.Where(m => m.MachineID == machineID).SingleOrDefault() ); public static Machine GetMachineById(IUnitOfWork unitOfWork, short id) { Machine machine; // Old code (working) //var machineRepository = unitOfWork.GetRepository<Machine>(); //machine = machineRepository.Find(m => m.MachineID == id).SingleOrDefault(); // New code (making problems) machine = QueryMachineById(unitOfWork.DataContext, id); return machine; } It looks like compiled query is returning result from another data context [TestMethod] public void GetMachinesTest() { using (var unitOfWork = IoC.Get<IUnitOfWork>()) { // Compile Query var machine = Machines.GetMachineById(unitOfWork, 3); } using (var unitOfWork = IoC.Get<IUnitOfWork>()) { var machineRepository = unitOfWork.GetRepository<Machine>(); // Get From Repository var machineFromRepository = machineRepository.Find(m => m.MachineID == 2).SingleOrDefault(); var machine = Machines.GetMachineById(unitOfWork, 2); VerifyHuskyHostMachine(machineFromRepository, 2, "Machine 2", "222222", "H400RS", "MachineIconB.xaml", false, true, LicenseType.Licensed, InterfaceType.HuskyHostV2, "10.0.97.2:8080", "10.0.97.2", 8080, "4.0"); VerifyHuskyHostMachine(machine, 2, "Machine 2", "222222", "H400RS", "MachineIconB.xaml", false, true, LicenseType.Licensed, InterfaceType.HuskyHostV2, "10.0.97.2:8080", "10.0.97.2", 8080, "4.0"); Assert.AreSame(machineFromRepository, machine); // FAIL } } If I run other (complex) unit tests I'm getting as expected: An attempt has been made to Attach or Add an entity that is not new, perhaps having been loaded from another DataContext.   • How to have a where clause on an insert or an update in Linq to Sql?

    - by Kelsey
    I am trying to convert the following stored proc to a LinqToSql call (this is a simplied version of the SQL): INSERT INTO [MyTable] ([Name], [Value]) SELECT @name, @value WHERE NOT EXISTS(SELECT [Value] FROM [MyTable] WHERE [Value] = @value) The DB does not have a constraint on the field that is getting checked for so in this specific case the check needs to be made manually. Also there are many items constantly being inserted as well so I need to make sure that when this specific insert happens there is no dupe of the value field. My first hunch is to do the following: using (TransactionScope scope = new TransactionScope()) { if (Context.MyTables.SingleOrDefault(t => t.Value == in.Value) != null) { MyLinqModels.MyTable t = new MyLinqModels.MyTable() { Name = in.Name, Value = in.Value }; // Do some stuff in the transaction scope.Complete(); } } This is the first time I have really run into this scenario so I want to make sure I am going about it the right way. Does this seem correct or can anyone suggest a better way of going about it without having two seperate calls? Edit: I am running into a similar issue with an update: UPDATE [AnotherTable] SET [Code] = @code WHERE [ID] = @id AND [Code] IS NULL How would I do the same check with Linqtosql? I assume I need to do a get and then set all the values and submit but what if someone updates [Code] to something other than null from the time I do the get to when the update executes? Same problem as the insert...

  • is there a better way to write this frankenstein LINQ query that searches for values in a child tabl

    - by MRV
    I have a table of Users and a one to many UserSkills table. I need to be able to search for users based on skills. This query takes a list of desired skills and searches for users who have those skills. I want to sort the users based on the number of desired skills they posses. So if a users only has 1 of 3 desired skills he will be further down the list than the user who has 3 of 3 desired skills. I start with my comma separated list of skill IDs that are being searched for: List<short> searchedSkillsRaw = skills.Value.Split(',').Select(i => short.Parse(i)).ToList(); I then filter out only the types of users that are searchable: List<User> users = (from u in db.Users where u.Verified == true && u.Level > 0 && u.Type == 1 && (u.UserDetail.City == city.SelectedValue || u.UserDetail.City == null) select u).ToList(); and then comes the crazy part: var fUsers = from u in users select new { u.Id, u.FirstName, u.LastName, u.UserName, UserPhone = u.UserDetail.Phone, UserSkills = (from uskills in u.UserSkills join skillsJoin in configSkills on uskills.SkillId equals skillsJoin.ValueIdInt into tempSkills from skillsJoin in tempSkills.DefaultIfEmpty() where uskills.UserId == u.Id select new { SkillId = uskills.SkillId, SkillName = skillsJoin.Name, SkillNameFound = searchedSkillsRaw.Contains(uskills.SkillId) }), UserSkillsFound = (from uskills in u.UserSkills where uskills.UserId == u.Id && searchedSkillsRaw.Contains(uskills.SkillId) select uskills.UserId).Count() } into userResults where userResults.UserSkillsFound > 0 orderby userResults.UserSkillsFound descending select userResults; and this works! But it seems super bloated and inefficient to me. Especially the secondary part that counts the number of skills found. Thanks for any advice you can give. --r

  • Tips/tricks to manage a new team with new code

    - by Fanatic23
    How do you handle yourself in a new team where you are the senior most developer and most others in the team are junior to you by several years. The task ahead of the team is something nobody else including you has accomplished in their career before. Management insists on higher productivity of the whole team, and as senior developer you are responsible. Any tips for coming out trumps in a situation like this? Clearly, the entire team needs time to learn and let's not forget the team's new. However, deadlines are up ahead as well...

  • Linq Left Outer Join

  • Linq To Sql or classic ADO.net?

    - by Spyros
    I am asking my self many times before start writting a new app or data access library , should I use LinqToSql or classic ADO.net , I have used both and the development time I spend on building an app with Linq To sql is like the 1/3 compared to ADO.net. The only think I like using Linq to sql is that I dont have to design the domain objects Linq does that for me and saves me from spend my time on boring things :P But is Linq to sql suitable for large scale projects , is there an overhead that we can avoid when using ADO.net ?

  • Future of Linq to Sql and Entity Framework

    I work on a project and want to use an ORM. What should I use: Linq to Sql or Entity Framework? Linq to Sql provides more opportunities, as I see, for example support for enumeration types. However, also it is said that, Linq to Sql was for playing and learning for Linq and future strategy of Microsoft lies on Entity Framework. So which one should I use?

  • Two new profile in new visual studio 2010.

    - by Jalpesh P. Vadgama
    Visual studio 2010 is a great tool and i have become fan of visual studio 2010. I have found two new code profile in visual studio 2010. Web Development Profile Web Development Code Optimized Profile. Web Development profile will hide the top bar which contains the client object and and event dropdowns. So it will have more spaces. Another one web development code optimized which will hide all the things except main windows. It will hide Toolbox,CSS properties and all other things so you will have more spaces to play with your html. So as a web developer you can use this two great new profile as per your convenience when you only want to play with your html then use webdevelopement code  optimized profile and another interesting thing is that you don’t have to reset your settings you can also just do with Tools->Settings menu like below. This will swap different profile like below. Hope this will help you.. Technorati Tags: Visual Studio 2010,ASP.NET 4.0

  • How to join results from two different sets in LINQ?

    - by Inez
    Hi, I get some data about customers in my database with this method: public List<KlientViewModel> GetListOfKlientViewModel() { List<KlientViewModel> list = _klientRepository.List().Select(k => new KlientViewModel { Id = k.Id, Imie = k.Imie, Nazwisko = k.Nazwisko, Nazwa = k.Nazwa, SposobPlatnosci = k.SposobPlatnosci, }).ToList(); return list; } but also I have another method which counts value for extra field in KlientViewModel - field called 'Naleznosci'. I have another method which counts value for this field based on customers ids, it looks like this: public Dictionary<int, decimal> GetNaleznosc(List<int> klientIds) { return klientIds.ToDictionary(klientId => klientId, klientId => (from z in _zdarzenieRepository.List() from c in z.Klient.Cennik where z.TypZdarzenia == (int) TypyZdarzen.Sprzedaz && z.IdTowar == c.IdTowar && z.Sprzedaz.Data >= c.Od && (z.Sprzedaz.Data < c.Do || c.Do == null) && z.Klient.Id == klientId select z.Ilosc*(z.Kwota > 0 ? z.Kwota : c.Cena)).Sum() ?? 0); } So what I want to do is to join data from method GetNaleznosc with data generated in method GetListOfKlientViewModel. I call GetNaleznosc like this: GetNaleznosc(list.Select(k => k.Id).ToList()) but don't know what to do next.

  • LINQ group one type of item

    - by Nelson
    I have a List that has various derived classes. I may have something like this: List<BaseClass> list = new List<BaseClass>() { new Class1(), new Class2(1), new Class3(), new Class2(2), new Class4() }; I am trying to use LINQ to semi-sort the list so that the natural order is maintained EXCEPT for Class2. All Class2 instances should be grouped together at the place that the first Class2 occurs. Here is what the output should be like: List<BaseClass> list = new List<BaseClass>() { new Class1(), new Class2(1), new Class2(2), new Class3(), new Class4() }; I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this...

  • Dealing with a fundamental design flaw when you're new to the project

    - by Matt Phillips
    I've just started working on an open source project with around 30 developers in it. I'm working on fixing some of the bugs as a way to get into the "loop" and become a regular committer to the project. The problem is I think I've uncovered a fundamental design flaw that's causing one of the bugs I'm working on. But I feel like if I blast this on the mailing list I'm going to come off as arrogant, and some of the discussions I've had about the issue are butting heads with some of the people. How should I go about this?

  • New Wine in New Bottles

    - by Tony Davis
    How many people, when their car shows signs of wear and tear, would consider upgrading the engine and keeping the shell? Even if you're cash-strapped, you'll soon work out the subtlety of the economics, the cost of sudden breakdowns, the precious time lost coping with the hassle, and the low 'book value'. You'll generally buy a new car. The same philosophy should apply to database systems. Mainstream support for SQL Server 2005 ends on April 12; many DBAS, if they haven't done so already, will be considering the migration to SQL Server 2008 R2. Hopefully, that upgrade plan will include a fresh install of the operating system on brand new hardware. SQL Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are designed to work together. The improved architecture, processing power, and hyper-threading capabilities of modern processors will dramatically improve the performance of many SQL Server workloads, and allow consolidation opportunities. Of course, there will be many DBAs smiling ruefully at the suggestion of such indulgence. This is nothing like the real world, this halcyon place where hardware and software budgets are limitless, development and testing resources are plentiful, and third party vendors immediately certify their applications for the latest-and-greatest platform! As with cars, or any other technology, the justification for a complete upgrade is complex. With Servers, the extra cost at time of upgrade will generally pay you back in terms of the increased performance of your business applications, reduced maintenance costs, training costs and downtime. Also, if you plan and design carefully, it's possible to offset hardware costs with reduced SQL Server licence costs. In his forthcoming SQL Server Hardware book, Glenn Berry describes a recent case where he was able to replace 4 single-socket database servers with one two-socket server, saving about $90K in hardware costs and $350K in SQL Server license costs. Of course, there are exceptions. If you do have a stable, reliable, secure SQL Server 6.5 system that still admirably meets the needs of a specific business requirement, and has no security vulnerabilities, then by all means leave it alone. Why upgrade just for the sake of it? However, as soon as a system shows sign of being unfit for purpose, or is moving out of mainstream support, the ruthless DBA will make the strongest possible case for a belts-and-braces upgrade. We'd love to hear what you think. What does your typical upgrade path look like? What are the major obstacles? Cheers, Tony.

    April in the Boston area means many things. This April will mean one more thing: A full-day, free SQL Server event featuring 30 top-notch sessions . SQL Saturday 71 will be the third full-day event in the area in as many years, and is shaping up to be the best yet. I am looking for a new language that is going up and will be big thing in the next 5-10 years, so in that time i can see the big picture and I know that I'm one of the few people who started from the beginning with X programming language or technology. My interest is web development.

  • advice for a new software engineer/developer right out of college

    - by ranzy
    I just graduated recently from a 4-year university with a degree in Computer Science and thankfully got a job in Software Engineering. I'm working with C++ with a .NET framework if that's correct to say because that also confuses me. What I'm asking for is what tutorials/books are out there to learn C++ for Windows Programming I guess? I know how to program somewhat and I understand the concepts but when I look at the code it doesn't make sense to me. I know I just started so it's kind of expected but it's certainly quite different from college. Thanks!

Can I delete all .folders in /home and then reinstall system (keeping old /home) ?
