• Any way to disable specific CPU sleep modes?

  I just got a new Toshiba Tecra S11 notebook, which has a Core i5 520M CPU, and it appears to suffer from a well-known problem: a high pitched noise when the CPU is idle. Googling around revealed that this is caused by a specific power-saving mode in the CPU. In most cases, C4 mode is blamed for the noise. So my question is: is it possible to disable C4 mode (or any other "sleep" mode) using some utility or BIOS setting? I don't mind if it hurts battery life. I'd appreciate any advice on this matter. It's driving me crazy.

  I have many Cisco / JunOS routers and switches that send logs to my Debian server, which uses rsyslogd. How can I configure rsyslogd to send these router / switch logs to a specific file, based on their source IP address? I do not want to pollute general system logs with these entries. For instance: all routers in Chicago (source ip block: 172.17.25.0/24) to only log to /var/log/net/chicago. all routers in Dallas (source ip block 172.17.27.0/24) to only log to /var/log/net/dallas. Finally, these logs should be rotated daily for up to 30 days and compressed. NOTE: I am answering my own question

  I am trying to allow an account to update very specific attributes on all User objects. I am setting this security on the "User" object. When I add the account on the security tab, go to advanced, edit the accounts permissions, and start going through the list of attributes I am only able to find a few, like First Name, but most of the attributes I want to let them write to are missing. How can I grant the account write access to these attributes?   Hello guys, We are using IIS 6 as our webserver. And we need to deny the access for one specif file, placed in only one specific URL, to everybody OUTSIDE the local network. In other words, if somebody is trying to access that filme/page from their own computer at home, using the internet, they must not succeed. But, if the same person try to do that at the same network of the web server, its ok. I am not sure about that, but Apache uses ORDER DENY,ALLOW. You specify the URL, allow or deny to all or to a range of IP. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Is there any way I can allow PAM two-factor authentication for a specifc user? I don't want users - By the same token - I only want to enable password authentication for specific accounts. I want my SSH daemon to reject the password authentication attempts to thwart would-be hackers into thinking that I will not accept password authentication - except for the case in which someone knows my heavily guarded secret account, which is password enabled. I want to do this for cases in which my SSH clients will not let me do either secret key, or two-factor authentication.

• Force users to access SSL site using specific host header

  Hi, So i am running IIS7 with one SSL site on it. I have a few different domains and subdomains that all point to my external IP. When using http they all direct to their respective sites using host headers. Whenever someone uses https on any of the domains they all point to my SSL site. I only want people who type in https://sub.domain.com (for example) to end up at my secure site and for anything else to just not go there, it can throw an error or direct to the http version, it doesn't matter. Is there a way of getting IIS7 to check the host header and throw an error if it doesn't match my specific subdomain? Thanks, Michael

  In the Outbound Rules, I set up a rule to allow outbound connection from port 26. But, it doesn't work. However, if I allow "all port" for this rule, this will work, but then all ports will be allowed too. What is the reason? Is there any conflicting rule? I need to fix this as soon as possible. -Edit to add : I'm trying to allow email access to mail server outside (port 26). The thing is, even if I telnet using port 26, it will not work, unless I allow "all ports". Specific port will not do.

• Can I autologin a specific user on a specific VT, but still have other login shells running?

  I'm running a linux system with Ubuntu Karmic on it, and I use it to run a webcam and a program that continuously outputs on the console. Is there any way I can force a user to login on VT2, and then switch VTs to VT2, but still have other login consoles running so I can hook a keyboard up to it and CTRL-ALT-F# to get to another terminal? I have a feeling this needs to go in my rc.local file, but nothing in the login manpage seems to suggest it can do what I want it to do. If there is no way to login a user on the vt, launching the program directly on a specific VT will work as well, since the user's shell in /etc/passwd is set to the program anyway.

I want to be able to go to these certain websites normally, just not have them saved and not have to use private or incognito mode. So the question is, how to create a cron job like this: Script A.sh could be called at any time by hands, and it should create cron job to run script B.sh once at the nearest time point. For example I will have 4 time points: 10.00pm, 10.15pm, 10.30pm, 10.45pm. So if trigger a script A.sh at 10.07pm it should creat cron job to run ONCE script B.sh at 10.15h, because 10.15h is the nearest time point in future. Is it possible? • A Service specific error occured:1 on trying to start apache 2.0 server.(Windows 7)

  I installed apache on my computer(localhost) and it worked fine. Then I went to download some other stuff and later noticed that the apache server stopped. So I went to command prompt(as administrator) and typed net start apache2. It says The Apache2 Service is starting. But before it finishes, I get the error A Service Specific Error Occurred: 1. It says that you can type in something for more info, but that doesn't help at all. Things I have tried: 1: Quit Google Drive Sync 2: Quit any and all programs using port 80(port my server is on) 3. I even tried changing the port of the server and got same error message, so I don't think it has anything to do with something else being in the port. None of those things have worked. I am confused at why it worked earlier, but now it won't work. Any help is greatly appreciated.

There is my specific problem. The predefined period of time is too long to be useful for me. The minimum amount of time is 0.5 seconds (max. 3 seconds). Is there any way to alter this value to something < 0.5? For example via editing the registry? Edit: The entry *'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Osk\HoverPeriod'* cannot be set lower than 500 ms. Any helpful tip would be great!

I set up a local account on the machine to match the email address and added "mydomain.com" to the mydestination property in main.cf. Then of course postfix tries to deliver every email to @mydomain.com locally and bounces them because the respective user doesn't exist.   My server has multiple IPs, 1.1.1.1 1.1.1.2 and i have a service which listens to a port e.g. 88 Now i want, when somebody from outside, wants to connect to the port, that he can only connect, to that port, if he connects to the ip 1.1.1.2:88 but if he tries to connect to 1.1.1.1:88 it should not react and it should look like that it dont exists and drops all connections. Ok, than i need for 1.1.1.2:88 that only allows a specific ip range outside connecters. for example only 9.*.*.* can connect to that port and ip. I'm using Centos. Thank you for your help.

  I have a small website with a Joomla and a Moodle set up. It seems that both of these are very slow. The server (CentOS release 5.5 (Final)) is a virtual dedicated server with about 2GB of ram. I don't expect to ever get more than 10-15 people on at the same time (and if that is high) What settings could I change in either apache, mysql, or even the OS to increase the performance of my site?   What is the best method for tracking changes or logging the queries done to a table by a specific user when the person is using Management Studio? I'm using 2008 R2 Express Edition and want to specifically track a single user who logs in through Management studio and runs queries to make changes manually. I want to see what query was run and thus determine what was changed and how. I am not interested in restoring the information. I considered Change Tracking but read that it is not ideal for auditing as well I am unsure how to read the data, then I considered the Bulk-Logging option on the database however I then have to consider handling the log files which may grow huge as the database is used constantly by a web app. I am wondering if there is a more concise method to do what I want?
