  I want Flash to play without sound on my machine, and I want that preference to stick so that new sessions don't surprise me with sound. Using FlashBlock while trying to remember to disable sound every time a flash window is started doesn't do the trick for me -- it's too difficult to remember to check the mute status before and after playing videos. Previously, using Win 7 and Firefox, one could selectively disable sound from Flash plugins using the method described in this question. Older methods of disabling it included the plugin called FlashMute. FlashMute fails me even when this trick has been employed, and the volume method described in the previous question only works for the currently live session, resetting sound to maximum volume whenever the plugin container is restarted. What is the best way to disable Flash sound?

• How to tell if my sound card is listed in Device Manager?

  The sound on my computer suddenly stopped working. When I check Sounds and Audio Devices in the Control Panel, I get "No Audio Device" with everything grayed out. When I check the Device Manager under "Sound, video and game controllers" I see the following list: Audio Codecs Legacy Audio Drivers Legacy Video Capture Devices Media Control Devices MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device Standard Game Port Video Codecs None of these looks like my sound card. Of course, my sound "card" is not really a sound card, it's integrated with the nVidia-nForce motherboard. I'm running Windows XP. So is one of the above my sound device, or is the OS not detecting it? If the latter, how do I get it to detect it?

• Help find correct alsa model for onboard sound (alc887?) that will work with jack and have correct mixer setup

  I have a Gigabyte GA-MA74GMT-S2 motherboard. I am using Jack for sound - connected to ALSA. I am running Ubuntu 12.04. aplay -l reports card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC887 Analog [ALC887 Analog] The problem is that the default setup, that alsa decides to use, causes stuttering and xruns no matter how generous I set the frames/period or periods/buffer etc. Also, Jack works fine if I plug in an external USB sound system and use that. My processor is an AMD phenom x4 945, and I have 8GB ram, and Video card is Geforce GTX550 Ti, all of which should be quite capable enough. I also tried Pulseaudio and that works fine, but I need to use Jack At first I thought it might be an interrupt conflict, but I have found that adding "options snd-hda-intel model=generic" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf causes it to play correctly, but the limited mixer setup lacks controls I need - so this setup isn't good enough. Still, it seems to prove it isn't a hardware conflict. I have tried many other models, such as 3stack, 6stack, auto and even basic, and they all suffer from the stuttering. I eventually found "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-6ch-intel" works without stuttering, and mixer is much closer to what it needs to be. Can anyone help on how to get a correct and accurate model for ALSA to use? • How do I stop sound coming from my speakers with a faulty headphone socket?

  On my laptop, I have a faulty headphone socket, so when I insert headphones into it, the speakers do not mute. I can confirm that this problem is caused by faulty hardware and not software as when I twist the headphone jack, the speakers come on and off according to the movements. On previous versions of Ubuntu, I worked around this problem by going into alsamixer and disabling "Auto-Mute Mode", and then going into the sound settings and choosing "Analog Headphones". However, on 12.04, no such option exists, rendering my headphones unusable with no way to work around the problem. I momentarily thought I had this problem fixed when I installed PulseAudio Volume Control from the Software Centre. I selected the Output Devices tab, and under "Built-in Audio Analogue Stereo" I selected "Headphones" for the port. However, this almost randomly seems to change back to "Speakers", despite me setting "Auto-Mute Mode" as disabled. Basically, I would like a way to permanently mute the speakers so only the headphones will play sound, without it losing my settings. It is ridiculous that such a simple setting has been taken away to "simplify" the user interface.

• Does approaching SICP in clojure have a high chance of success? [on hold]

  I am a third year bachelor student in a software engineering program, and I brought up the idea of reading SICP to an adviser to gain a deeper and more fundamental understanding of the principles behind all this software we engineer. He suggested not to learn scheme to complete the book (because it's not as common as modern dialects of lisp) but to do the exercises in clojure instead. My worry is that completing exercises in clojure instead of scheme will make an already difficult book tortuous. If I do attempt the book's exercises in the more modern clojure, will it be difficult to succeed (for example, because I can't find any real solutions, the syntax they teach for scheme is different, etc.), or do you think approaching the book in clojure could be just as successful as approaching it in scheme? I'm really not knowledgeable enough about either clojure or scheme to make an argument about this, so I wanted to know if I should bring it up or not.

• Determining your websites color scheme

  One of the biggest issues I have, from a UI standpoint, when building a new website is figuring out what colors I will use and of those colors, do they actually work well together. I found this site that has really helped me out and I figured I would share it with all of you and also get some responses back about either sites similar or other ways that you get/figure out your color schemes. Here is the site that I currently use: http://kuler.adobe.com/ With Adobe Kuler, you can chose a base color and it will suggest 5 colors, including your color, that go well with one another. You can, of course, modify the colors it chooses. Also,one of the main features I use, is the image color matching. You can upload an image and it will determine a color scheme based on the colors of the image. So if you have a logo and want to use the colors of the logo, then this works perfectly for you.   I'm trying to find out how I can do an "early return" in a scheme procedure without using a top-level if or cond like construct. (define (win b) (let* ((test (first (first b))) (result (every (lambda (i) (= (list-ref (list-ref b i) i) test)) (enumerate (length b))))) (when (and (not (= test 0)) result) test)) 0) For example, in the code above, I want win to return test if the when condition is met, otherwise return 0. However, what happens is that the procedure will always return 0, regardless of the result of the when condition. The reason I am structuring my code this way is because in this procedure I need to do numerous complex checks (multiple blocks similar to the let* in the example) and putting everything in a big cond would be very unwieldy.

  I defined the Scheme procedure to return another procedure with 2 parameters : (define (smooth f) (?(x dx)(/ (+ (f (- x dx)) (f x) (f (+ x dx))) 3.0))) if i run this procedure with sin procedure with 2 arguments 10 and 0.0001 then it is ok ((smooth sin) 10 0.0001) ==> -0.544021109075966 if i run this procedure recursively, then it has error ((smooth (smooth sin)) 10 0.0001) ==> procedure expects 2 arguments, given 1: #<promise:temp6> So can anyone tell me where is my problem? • What's the point of lambda in scheme?

  I am learning scheme. I know how to use both lambda and let expressions. However I'm struggling to figure out what the point is of using lambda. Can't you do everything with let that you can with lambda? It would be especially helpful to see an example of a situation where a lambda expression is a better choice than let. One other thing - are there also situations where let is more useful than lambda? If so such an example would be nice as well. Thanks!

  Hi I'm learning scheme and was wondering if there are any active open-source projects I might be able to get involved in? I'm nearing the end of SICP and although this has good complex examples no textbook code compares to real-world applications. eg testing code / benchmarking / revision control styles / sheer size and scope etc. Hence my curiousity at seeing a project in the wild. I tried searching google code but only found projects that are interpreters that implement RSR5/6. Perhaps there are not many projects out there and I should consider scala?! Advice or even pointers to specific projects appreciated.

• Writing out to a file in scheme

  The goal of this is to check if the character taken into account is a number or operand and then output it into a list which will be written out to a txt file. I'm wondering which process would be more efficient, whether to do it as I stated above (writing it to a list and then writing that list out into a file) or being writing out into a txt file right from the procedure. I'm new with scheme so I apologize if I am not using the correct terminology (define input '("3" "+" "4")) (define check (if (number? (car input)) (write this out to a list or directly to a file) (check the rest of file))) Another question I had in mind, how can I make it so that the check process is recursive? I know it's a lot of asking but I've getting a little frustrated with checking out the methods that I have found on other sites. I really appreciate the help!

• Skype sounds sizzle/distorted/bad

  I have the same problem as described in the questions skype notification sounds sizzled and bad sound on login to skype. But it is not only the login, notification, but also when talking to somebody. I tried the solution to remove/re-install skype and most of the solutions in this questions, e.g. checking mixer, sound settings and installing alsa-hda-dkms (incl. system restart). After installing skype (and even after upgrade to skype 4.0) in Ubuntu 12.04 (AMD 64) there was no sound at all. It is obvious that hardware is able to play the same sounds but louder but because of the data it just plays it at some low level even at 100% volume. Vlc can generally increase the volume of a file up to 200%. Is there a way to do the same thing VLC does system-wide and if possible for an arbitrary v percentage value. If there is no application that does this, where should i look into for libs to do it myself or what code should i modify(eg code in the alsamixer) thank you

• Ventrilo sound delay issue in Windows 7

  I've upgraded my machine to Windows 7 Professional (x64) (using format + clean install, not upgrade install). Everything seems to work fine except for Ventrilo. I used to have Vista Business x64 and Ventrilo worked fine there, on the same machine. The issue I am having is that when I am playing a game and using Ventrilo, everything works fine at first, but after a few minutes, I stop hearing anything that people say. If I minimize, I can see the speaker icons lighting up (meaning that people are talking), but I still can't hear anything. The sounds from the game and other OS sounds still play through the speakers just fine. Eventually, I will close ventrilo and then after a few seconds I will start hearing things that people were saying several minutes ago. I start hearing everything that was said, with no "silent time" in between. Note that the sounds keep playing even AFTER the ventrilo process is dead. I've tried using Ventrilo x64 and x86 versions. Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this problem?

  The title pretty much says it all. My experience w/ubuntu is VERY limited. I did find the system test feature and ran an audio test. It found my device as Intel 82801DB-ICH4. I wasn't getting anything. I tried a couple of things and don't really even remember what I tried, but I started getting audio (not just beeps) from the system's internal speaker. Any ideas? (I can't rule out a hardware problem. This box sat under my bed for a couple of years and it's first life was in an environment FULL of cement dust.)H

• Terrible noises from subwoofer of ACER Aspire 6930 with Realtek sound chip

  After approximately 5-15 min of listening to music my subwoofer begins to make terrible noises. He's just "coughing". That began after 6 months I had this computer. Now I found out, that I can temporarily fix this problem by "restarting" the audio stream of the application that plays music. For example reloading last.fm page (reloads the flash file). Another way to reset the audio playback is switching the speaker configuration shown below in the screenshot. According to many posts on the internet like http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/52918-20-acer-aspire-6935g-speaker-problem ACER support isn't any help Exchanging hardware doesn't fix the problem Even the later models have this problem Turning off the volume of the subwoofer is not an option to me. I still have warranty (I bought an extension of one year). I already tried about 15 versions of the Realtek driver with no success. I am not sure but MAYBE the problem did not occur on the original windows vista that was shipped with this computer. However, I removed the original windows for good reasons (english). What do you suggest me? Did anyone fix this problem? Maybe by writing a script which resets the audio streams every 5 minutes? Shall I take the effort to deal with the acer support until they give me another model? (I won't have a computer than for a longer time, will spend money on telephone hotlines (1,30 EUR / min)......) • Sound entirely stopped working on Windows 8 on a Macbook Pro

  I am currently running Windows 8 (downloaded from DreamSpark) on a Macbook Pro. This worked fine for a while but suddenly all audio stopped working. When I go to "Playback devices" and hit "Test" on the speakers I get treated with the following message: This also shows up right after I try restarting. I tried disallowing exclusive usage of the devices but it makes no difference. Edit: After some looking around I tried changing the sample rate and bit depth so I would get a dialog screen to force Windows to go around the program that's using it. I did get the dialog but then instead of changing it I got the following error: Edit 2: I narrowed it down to a single service failing to start, the Multimedia Class Scheduler service fails to start with the following error:
