• Multiple LiveCD iso's on a single USB drive

  I am looking to create a USB flash drive that I can put multiple LiveCD iso's on and select which boots from startup. The ideal candidate supports linux and windows based iso's, and is relatively simple. It also must have some reasonable process for adding and removing iso from the drive/list. Things that I'm not looking for this specific question: UBCD or other swiss-army knife livecd's. The point is to boot any one of multiple CD's, not to boot a (certainly useful) utility CD. Installing a single LiveCD to a USB drive. I'd like to have multiple iso images, selectable at startup. I don't have a specific purpose in mind, possibilties include a single drive with a knoppix variant, ubuntu desktop, UBCD for dos, UBCD4Win, the Offline NT Password Cracker, etc. Flexible and easy to use are the name of the game!

• User's home drive permissions don't contain system or administrators on Windows Server 2008 R2

  I have a user whose home drive has only that user in the permissions. No administrators, etc. I have tried to take ownership as a local administrator however I cant seem to apply settings to the child objects -- it still gives me a permission denied error. I know there are some handy CLI utils that can redo permissions. Any ideas? Or even a way to do it through Windows? The file server is a 2008 R2 server.

  Here it goes. My friend saved by his works into my flash drive which was detectable/openable but ... The very next day, the drive wouldn't show up in My Computer and Windows gave him error code 43 (Unknown device). I been searching for the next few hours to find a solution as the works inside is important to him. I know he should back up his files but let's not go there. So .... I tried others few systems that once detected his flash drive but the problem still persisted. I don't know whether or not his flash drive is damaged but when plug/un-plugging, there are still sounds coming out though. Tried solutions: [On Vista Home Premium/HIS COME]Uninstalled -- Restarted com -- Re-installed (ERROR 43) [Windows 7/MY COM] Uninstalled --- Restarted com --- Can't install (ERROR 43) It seems that my com (Windows 7) had the lastest drivers already but still can't detect it. Its a Kingston DataTraveller 101 (DT101) 8GB. Could unplugging the flash drive without clicking "Safely Remove Hardware" is the problem? Kindly provide some help. Thank you all.

  My laptop has two USB ports, but one is broken, so I use a USB hub in the other good USB port. In that USB hub, I use a mouse and keyboard. Suddenly, that USB port doesn't detect the mouse and the keyboard (even with the light of the hub is on), and the only solution that I found is restarting the laptop. But just some minutes and the keyboard and mouse goes undetected again... Is there some method, software, etc. to "restart/repair" the USB port without restarting the PC?

  How to get my information off my old hard drive to my new one So I wanna know can anyone help me Laptop stop working and have me a hard disk error I finally got it to boot up again after playing with it, and I tried to copy my stuff and it froze on me and hasn't booted since Bought another hard drive and ended up making an image of my friends computer but couldn't get my stuff off my old drive so I tried the freezer method now and I put it in for two hours and it didn't boot but I'm putting it back in for 12hrs So my end result is I just wanna get my drive up enough to create an image of my CPU to my new hard drive and is there another way I could do it if my hard drive won't boot!! But here's the kickers when I made the image of my friends computerized up loaded it to the new hard drive and I have my old hard drive plugged up to an USB enclosure so I need help. • Can I "reprogram" an American Express USB drive?

  I recently received a USB drive that looks like a credit card as a promotion. The drive portion flips out to plug it in. When you plug it in, it opens the run dialog, and opens a URL to an American Express web page. I was able to find it in the Device Manager: But I don't know what else to do? Is there a way I can convert this into a plain old USB drive? Or better yet, can I modify the command that it runs when inserted into a computer?

• Partition Bootable Flash Drive

  I created a bootable flash drive with Chromium OS installed on it. However, Chromium OS only needs about 4GB of space, and my flash drive is 8GB. I wanted to make the rest of the 4GB a FAT32 partition, but when I look at GParted, I have 12 different partitions on the flash drive with unallocated space scattered everywhere. I made the bootable flash drive with Ubuntu Linux's usb-imagecreator I run Ubuntu Linux 11.04 x86_64 and Windows 7 Professional x64 If any of you have experience with this, any help would be appreciated.   I have a thumb drive on which I take many of my files with me. I would like to synchronize it with my computer automatically when I connect it. I currently have a script run every time I connect it so that I can do the many things that need to be done when it connects (check for updates to the portable applications, etc.). I want my synchronization utility to: Detect conflicts work correctly when I move files or change the folder structure tell the difference between a file that was deleted on one side and a file that was added on the other work from the command line or at least have a command that will open up a window provide a confirmation screen before doing anything The Windows Briefcase does all of these except the command line. Is there any program that does all of these, or is there a way to synchronize the briefcase from the command line?

• External USB disk drive cannot be remounted in Windows XP

  I have Maxtor Basics Desktop 1TB external USB drive connected to Windows XP. The dirve's firmware puts it to sleep after 10-20 min of inactivity and then the drive cannot be mounted unless I reset it via power connector. While in sleep mode I can see the device in the Device Manager under both Disk drives and USB sections. Is there a way to get the drive out of sleep mode without hard reset? Thanks

If not I will assume that the application is a non valid copy. Any idea about it? Thanks in advance. • Make exact copy of USB stick [closed]

  There's this school software on a USB drive. It only runs, when the stick they gave is plugged in. Cloning the drive with dd command didn't work. I'm guessing it checks the hardware ID of the flash drive. Is there any way to change drives information? I guess not, but is it possible to create a virtual flash drive with exactly same hardware id and all other read-only information that the software is most probably checking. EDIT: The paper math books we have dont' have answers. So when I'm doing homework I have no idea if did it right. The electronic version does have the answers. The publisher didn't put them into paper version because of simple reason - money. They would have to republish the book if some answers are found to be wrong. So I feel no shame trying to pirate that software, because publishers are ruining our math education.

• Windows 7 startup repair with Truecrypt

  I have many computers encrypted with Truecrypt 7.1a (current version) with the whole drive encrypted. Today one of them shows the Windows 7 splash screen for a moment and then goes into startup repair which can't read the encrypted drive. I've tried the various safe modes and what not. The solution is to decrypt the drive and then run startup repair to fix the drive. The problem is that is going to take 50 hours. I've started that process for this situation but I need to have a way to cover myself when this happens to the next PC. What can I do to avoid decrypting the whole drive? I can't be the only one facing this problem so I feel like I must be missing something. Thanks!

• NO USB devices show in windows 8.1 device manager

  Whatever I plug into my USB ports will get power and will charge but will not connect to the computer. I have restarted the computer several times, I re-installed the chipset drivers and still even a USB HDD will not show up under the device manager, not even as an unknown device. I believe this happened because I switched android adb to listen on tcpip rather than USB as this is when the USB ports stopped working. I have set it back to USB but that hasn't seemed to correct the issue. It seems to me that ADB has shut off detection of devices through USB and I am out of ideas and can't find anything useful online. I would prefer not to have to reinstall windows unless I really have to but it is looking like that is exactly what I am going to have to do. I am using windows 8.1. Thanks

  I am sick of not being able to run and install certain applications on my work computer due to admin restrictions (eg: Adobe AIR) . I have heard of smaller versions of Windows running on a usb thumb drive and have looked into it but can't find anything on running windows virtually from a usb drive. I would like to be able to login to this particular computer, insert my usb drive and then open up another version of windows installed on the thumb drive while still being able to use the windows I logged in on (literally be able to alt+tab between the main desktop and the virtual desktop from the usb drive). Is this even possible? For further clarification: The version of windows has to be Windows XP and there is no other option available for what I want to do. Looking forward to a response.

• Disk Drive not working

  The CD/DVD drive on my sisters' (I'm helping her shift from Win. XP (now officially deprecated by Microsoft) to Ubuntu) system. Now, it may end up being a failed attempt, all together (Almost the whole last year (when she's been on XP) the disk drive hasn't (not even powering on) been working.), I just want to make sure I've explored every remote possibility. Because I figure, "Huh, now that I've got Ubuntu running, instead of XP, that (just) might make a difference.". • Is there a command line (or autohotkey) way of dismounting a USB drive?

  I find dismounting a USB drive takes far too many mouse clicks for my liking. Is there are command line way of doing it (XP and Vista)? Addition I have an eye condition that makes hand mouse coordination difficult so any suggestion that there aren't too many clicks will be downvoted as not answering my question. However I use AutoHotkey a lot and one use case would be to call it from an AHK script. So if there is a way to code it in AHK that will do. Added this to the tags. Further question - is it safe to remove a disk when the computer is a. on Standby or b. Hibernated. I recall that W2000 got uspet if you pulled a disk from a hibernated machine. Or is it better to explicitly dismount or sync before you hibernate or standby - prabably in a script.

• SSAS Multithreaded sync with Windows 2008 R2

  We have been happily running some of our systems on WIndows 2003 and have had an upgrade to W2K8 R2 on the list for quite some time. The upgrade has now completed and we can start taking advantage of some of the new features which is the reason for this post. For a long time we have used the sample Robocopy script from the SQLCat team to synchronize some of our larger SSAS databases. • Can I run Ubuntu Live from a USB flash-drive without destroying the data on it?

  I already have a number of files on a flash drive (8 gb) that I would prefer to keep, but I would like to try Ubuntu even if merely for the aesthetics. I use Windows XP. I know that it's definitely possible to run Ubuntu from a bootable drive like my flash drive to try Ubuntu but I would much rather keep my files intact not only on my flash drive but also my hard drive, if that's possible. I also want to know if it's entirely possible that while running Ubuntu from the USB if I can switch back to Windows while my computer is still on. If I'm missing something, please let me know. I'm very grateful for any assistance in this matter.

• USB transfer speed for Windows 7 is incredibly slow to my external drive

  I'm running Windows 7 Pro and am try to backup 116 GB of data to my external 1 TB hard drive. My laptop has only USB 2.0 ports and my hard drive is USB 3.0 compatible, as is the cable I'm using. I understand that the transfer speed should still be in accordance with USB 2.0 speeds. However, right now I'm getting 135 KB/s and it's been gradually dropping. For an earlier transfer, I would get between 4 MB/s to 8 MB/s. So, I'm really just wondering what's going on with my transfer rate and what I can do to improve it. I'm currently about 35 GB into the 116 GB transfer. Another strange thing is that the window which shows the transfer status decided to max out at 835 MB, and therefore shows items remaining as 0. However, it is still performing the rest of the transfer, and I can see it still cycling through files. Now that I think about it, it seems plausible that the speed being shown by the window is calculated merely as total data transferred / time elapsed. Since the "counter" of data, as far as what is being displayed in the window, maxed out at 835 MB, as time increases, the speed shown is going to keep decreasing because the 'total data transferred' value isn't being incremented. So with that in mind, I suppose I don't actually know at what rate the data is being transferred currently. Nonetheless, my best speed earlier was only around 8 MB/s. Shouldn't USB 2.0 deliver closer to 35 MB/s? Also, if someone can tell me why the transfer status window is displaying the incorrect data information and how to fix this, that would also be appreciated.

• Upgrade to Genuine Windows 8 Pro from non genuine Windows 7

  I have a computer with non-genuine windows 7 (cracked with windows loader). I was thinking of buying / upgrading to Windows 8 Pro. I ran Windows8-UpgradeAssistant.exe and was said that I can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro. Can I perform a clean upgrade (format and install) from my current windows 7 to windows 8? In future, in order to re-install Windows 8 do I need to re-install the non-genuine Windows 7 and install on top of it? If my hard disk crash, or I want to install on a new hard disk (clean install), do I need to install windows 7 again before upgrading to Windows 8? If I don't like Windows 8, can I downgrade to Windows 7 genuine?

• USB transfer speed "logarithmically" decreases. Why and can it be improved?

  I have an external hard drive. Just today I tried to copy a bigger file (it was film of ~230 MB) and at first it rushed up until ~70%. There is started decreasing. At first it started at around 56 MB/s Then it rapidly dropped to 23 MB/s (File transfer was 70% complete) Then it slowly started decreasing until it was around 2 MB/s (File was ~90% complete) When it finished the transfer it was slightly above 1.5 MB/s. To describe it graphically: If you drew a curve of the decrease it would probably resemble the graph of a logarithm function So, what I'm really asking is: "Why does this happen?" and "Is there a way around it?" Thank you!

• Install Lubuntu 10.04 to a USB Drive

  I'm looking to install Lubuntu 10.04 onto my flash drive to test it out without the risk of altering my system which runs Windows 7. I think I need what is called a "persistant install", so that Lubuntu will run off of my flash drive and any changes made will stay there, unlike the demo feature of the CD.
