• MonoTouch Hello World for iPad

  I have tried following the sample Hello World for MonoTouch by creating an iPad solution. For some reason I cannot get the MainWindow to load. I followed the instructions exactly and the app just closes before even loading a view. Is there something missing? Do I need to tell the solution how to load the MainWindow.XIB or something? Please help, this seems very basic and I am about to throw MonoTouch in the garbage.

• Mercator projection world map with Geoserver and Openlayers

  I'm trying to render a world map shapefile on my Geoserver with a Mercator projection. I've tried declaring the SRS on Geoserver and defining EPSG projections of 3785 or 900913 in Openlayers with no success. I've also tried to reproject the shapefile using ogr2ogr but the result is slightly off. • Covariance and contravariance real world example

  I'm having a little trouble understaing how I would use covariance and contravariance in the real world. So far, the only example's I've seen have been the same old array example. object[] objectArray = new string[] { "string 1", "string 2" }; It would be nice to see an example that would allow me to use it during my development if I could see it being used elsewhere. • it takes 2 seconds to compile a hello world C++ project in netbeans (windows)

  I used code:blocks as the C++ IDE on Windows. I switched to netbeans 6.8 (with C/C++ plugin, MinGW, MSYS) recently, because netbeas have the nice feature of "checking syntax errors when typing" (same as working on Java or PHP projects). But the painful thing is that, it takes 2 seconds to compile a simple hello world project in netbeans. Any trick to make it as fast as code:blocks, or at least make the compiling time no more than 0.5 second?

  Starter question: My "Hello World" attempt won't run, ("No compatible targets were found"), I think this is bacause I selected the latest version for my project (2.2), and the highest AVD version is 2.0.1. Does this make sense? Can I change my project version (haven't been able to find a way to do this), or do I have to start again? If the versions are not backwards compatible, what is the best version to use for the majority of Android devices out there? Thanks

• Error when connecting to hello world yesod example on Windows 8

  I start the executable (after building it with cabal) and it says "Application launched, listening on port 3000." Next I connect to it with my web browser and the console says "threadWaitRead requires -threaded on Windows, or use System.IO.hWaitForInput." The web browser never connects. • robocode engine: how to design (write) the runtime engine -- the robot world

  IBM has (had) a free learn-Java program called RoboCode, in which custom robots could be written that would then do battle in a 2D space. I would like to write the environment that supports such robots, but don't know what pattern or design to use. Each robot is a thread. Each thread is given a certain (indeterminate) amount of run-time by the JRE. A robot world engine would start by building a list of the players/robots, then enter a loop that allows each player in turn to do whatever it likes: move forward, turn left, fire toward the northwest corner, whatever. Each robot is also informed of events of interest: an enemy or several enemies are within range, it has been hit by a bullet, etc. The combination of handling threads that are also event listeners (are they also producers?) confuses me; it seems that there's more to the game engine. Even some general ideas would help. TIA.

• iPhone MapKit - Go "Around the World" ?

  I have an App that is using MapKit. I am dropping pins and everything else, but when I zoom out to view the entire world, it does not let me go past the the middle of the Pacific Ocean. If I am viewing California and want to go to China, I have to scroll all the way East to view it. Is there a setting that I need to turn on, or is this just the way it is? I do note that this is how the actual Maps App works, so I might presume that this setting cannot be changed...

• Relating NP-Complete problems to real world problems

  I have a decent grasp of NP Complete problems; that's not the issue. What I don't have is a good sense of where they turn up in "real" programming. Some (like knapsack and traveling salesman) are obvious, but others don't seem obviously connected to "real" problems. I've had the experience several times of struggling with a difficult problem only to realize it is a well known NP Complete problem that has been researched extensively. If I had recognized the connection more quickly I could have saved quite a bit of time researching existing solutions to my specific problem. Are there any resources (online or print) that specifically connect NP Complete to real world instances?

  In all the books I've read on reflection they often say that there aren't many cases where you want to generate IL on the fly, but they don't give any examples of where it does make sense. After seeing Reflection.Emit as a job requirement for a gaming company I was curious where else it's being used. • How do i translate movement on the Canvas3D to movement in the virtual 3D world

  My goal is to move a shape in the virtual world in such a way so that it ends up where the mouse pointer is on the canvas. What i have: -mouse position (x,y) on a Canvas3D object -Point3d object of where a pick ray starting from the Canvas3D viewport intersects with the first scene object. (point in 3D space of where i want to start the drag) What i want: -Some way to translate the Point3d's coordinates so that the initial point of intersection (the Point3d object) is always overlapping the the mouse position on the canvas (same as when i used the pick ray to determine what the user clicked on from the Canvas3D object).   I'm coming to Java from C# & ASP.NET MVC, I'd love to find an equivalent in the Java world that I could use on the Google App Engine. I've already started to have a play with FreeMarker and even made the first steps towards writing a very simple framework. Ideally I wouldn't have to do all the hard work though, someone must have done this already! So my question is - what frameworks are there out there that would be familiar for me coming from ASP.NET MVC and I could use them on Google App Engine for Java. The key things I'd want are: Simple Routing - /products/view/1 gets mapped to the view action of the products controller with the productid of 1 Template Engine - some way of easily passing 'ViewData' to the view, and from the view easily accessing it, ideally I'd love to avoid anything that is too XMLy (thus why I like FreeMarker).

• Eclipse IDE's Hello World Cheatsheet seems to have a mistake

  Hey guys, Just a warning: I'm completely new to Java and am trying to teach myself Android programming. I installed the Eclipse IDE today and tried to walk through the first Java Hello World "cheat sheet," and it didn't work! I was really quite surprised. When it asked me to select the checkbox to create the main() method, there wasn't anything on-screen that looked like a checkbox with "main()" or "method" next to it, so I guessed that maybe what they meant was the "Modifiers" radio button. So I left that checked for "public." It didn't compile and I got red X's next to every folder in my Package Explorer. Has anybody else had this problem? Thanks!

  Hello. I am having a real headache trying to set a node's local position to match a given world position. I was given a solution but, AFAICS, it only takes into account orientation and position but NOT scaling : node_new_local_position = node_parent.derivedOrientation().Inverse() * ( world_position_to_match - node_parent.derivedPosition() ); The node in question is a child of node_parent; node_parent local and derived properties (orientation, position and scaling) are known, as well as its full matrix transform. All the positions are 3d vectors; the orientation is a quaternion; the full transform is a 4x4 matrix. Could someone please help me to modify the solution to support scaling in the node hierarchy?   i use the downloadable geonames database for all countries, states, counties and cities in the world. but i wonder if there is a database for streets? so you could pick: country - state/department/district - (county/region) - city - street in whatever country you like? cause when i do a search for a street in google map i can see all the upper levels (country/region/city). is there a database you could download for mysql for this? there has to be a database for this, cause there are always national companies that provide this kind of information. where did they get it from? thanks in advance!

• Polygon area calculation using Latitude and Longitude generated from Cartesian space and a world fil

  Given a series of GPS coordinate pairs, I need to calculate the area of a polygon (n-gon). This is relatively small (not larger than 50,000 sqft). The geocodes are created by applying an affine transform with data from a world file. I have tried to use a two step approach by doing converting the geocodes to cartesian coordinates: double xPos = (lon-lonAnchor)*( Math.toRadians( 6378137 ) )*Math.cos( latAnchor ); double yPos = (lat-latAnchor)*( Math.toRadians( 6378137 ) ); then I use a cross product calculation to determine the area. The issue is that the results are a bit off in accuracy (around 1%). Is there anything I can look into to improve this? Thanks.

I had a look at GeoNames, but all I can seem to find are lists that have the countries as well as cities in the same list. I guess I can just parse it and filter out the countries, but I was hoping to avoid that.   I am just looking into using HTML Purifier to ensure that a user-inputed string (that represents the name of a person) is sanitized. I do not want to allow any html tags, script, markup etc - I just want the alpha, numeric and normal punctuation characters.   I know that PHP is still the most popular web programming language in the world. This question just want to bring some of my concerns about PHP. PHP is naturally bound to C10K problem. Since PHP (generally run in Apache) cannot be event-driven or asynchronous, each HTTP request will occupy at least one thread or process. This makes it resistant to be more scalable. Currently, a lot of web sites (like Facebook) with high performance and scalability still depends on PHP in their front end servers. I suppose it is due to legacy reason. Is it possible that PHP will be replaced by language more suitable for C10K?
