• Accessing items from a dictionary using pickle efficiently in Python

  I have a large dictionary mapping keys (which are strings) to objects. I pickled this large dictionary and at certain times I want to pull out only a handful of entries from it. The dictionary has usually thousands of entries total. When I load the dictionary using pickle, as follows: from cPickle import * # my dictionary from pickle, containing thousands of entries mydict = open(load('mypickle.pickle')) # accessing only handful of entries here for entry in relevant_entries: # find relevant entry value = mydict[entry] I notice that it can take up to 3-4 seconds to load the entire pickle, which I don't need, since I access only a tiny subset of the dictionary entries later on (shown above.) How can I make it so pickle only loads those entries that I have from the dictionary, to make this faster? Thanks.

• Clear all currently defined vim macros

  Hi everyone I have a vim macro that I keep mistyping, usually when I'm trying to save something so I do it quickly and I can't work out what keys I pressed. It is annoying as it pastes some irrelevant bash code into my file so I have to undo the erroneous pasting which also undos the last thing I typed that I do want. I was looking for a way to either list the currently defined macros (so I can redefine the offending one), or a way to clear out them completely. I only use macros in the very short term so I don't mind losing them all. Cheers

• Established javascript solution for secure registration & authentication without SSL

  Is there any solution for secure user registration and authentication without SSL? With "secure" I mean safe from passive eavesdropping, not from man-in-the-middle (I'm aware that only SSL with signed certificate will reach this degree of security). The registration (password setup, i.e. exchanging of pre-shared keys) must be also secured without SSL (this will be the hardest part I guess). I prefer established and well tested solution. If possible, I don't want to reinvent the wheel and make up my own cryptographic protocols. Thanks in advance.

  I have two tables, related by a common key. So TableA has key AID and value Name and TableB has keys AID, BID and values Name, Value: AID Name 74 Alpha AID BID Name Value 74 4 Beta Brilliance I would like to update the TableB Value here from Brilliance to Barmy, using just the Name fields. I thought I could do it via an UPDATE containing a JOIN, but Access (I know...) is complaining with 'Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression ' and then everything from 'Barmy' here: UPDATE tB SET tB.BValue='Barmy' FROM TableB tB INNER JOIN TableA tA ON tB.AID=tA.AID WHERE tB.Name='Beta' AND tA.Name='Alpha'; What is my heinous crime? Or is it just Access not conforming?

  I tried the validation example code for web api on the latest mvc 4 download and I'm getting some errors. Does anyone have an updated example of the ValidationActionFilter class.   setup: hibernate 3.3, MySQL 5 I have an hibernate entity that have its PK generated using a sequence table.   Throughout my SharePoint site, I have several document repositories that are tied to primary keys from an external database. I have added custom columns in the document library metadata fields so that we will know which SharePoint documents correspond with which table entries. As a requirement, we need to have document uploads that have these fields automatically populated. For instance, I'd like to have the following url: ./Upload.aspx?ClassID=2&SystemID=63 So that when you upload any documents to this library, it automatically adds the ClassID and SystemID values to the corresponding ClassID and SystemID columns outlined in the SharePoint document library fields. Is there any quick or easy way to do this, or will I have to completely rewrite the Upload.aspx script from scratch?

Is it OK to have multiple Main() methods in a single project? Will I be able to compile them to different .jar files? (In this case I need two different jars for the server) Is there a better way to setup the packages? And a totally unrelated question, with exceptions, is it better to handle them right then and there or throw them and let the main method catch them all (the program cannot recover if an error occurs)

  Hi all, I have got a cookie string from HTTP response header like the following line: name=value; path=/; domain=.g.cn; expire=... I can parse the above line to key-value pairs, and, also it's easy to set the name and value to HttpCookie instance as this pair comes the first. But how to set the other pairs since I don't know which set-method corresponds to the name of the next name-value pair. Traverse all possible keys a cookie may contian and call the matched set-method, like below snippet? if (key.equalsIgnoreCase("path")) cookie.setPath(value); else if (key.equalsIgnoreCase("domain")) cookie.setDomain(value); That's foolish, any convenient ways? • Getting Notifications in Background Mode iOS?

  I'm trying to get Notifications in Background Mode by running a method every minute to see if there are new notifications. This works great in Active Mode, but I saw for background mode it is restricted to 7 keys. I enabled the Background Mode with the option Background Fetch, but seems like the method is being called but it's not complete. In AppDelegate I'm calling: - (void)applicationDidEnterBackground:(UIApplication *)application { //This has a Timer to execute every minute [self GetNotifications]; //This executes a NSMutableURLRequest *request //giving back the JSON data with the notifications } I would like to do something like Facebook does for Notifications. Any idea how to do this?

• Using local configs in a Heroku deployment environment

  I'm trying to migrate my app to Heroku - I have a config file that varies with development/staging/production environments as it contains uniquely assigned keys (from Facebook, S3, etc.), so I keep it out of the repository and keep the configs local. As such I'm trying to find a solution for Heroku to have that config file since Heroku deploys from the repository. I noticed Heroku deploys from the master branch - can it deploy from another branch? Because then I could commit the Heroku configs there, and have it not overwrite the other environments' configs every time it pulls. Thanks!

• Class properties vs NSArray / NSDictionary

  I want a custom class object to hold data and have somehow the feeling that creating about 80 properties is not the best way of doing it. Most of the properties would be bool values, so i'm thinking about creating Arrays (keys / values) or (probably better) a NSDictionary attached to the object for holding the data. Does that make sense or should i stay with the properties? Extra: Are there general pros and cons for the different approaches? And what keywords / concepts do i have to search for to find discussions about that somehow general question? Thanks in advance

• Can Django flush its database(s) between every unit test

  Django (1.2 beta) will reset the database(s) between every test that runs, meaning each test runs on an empty DB. However, the database(s) are not flushed. One of the effects of flushing the database is the auto_increment counters are reset. Consider a test which pulls data out of the database by primary key: class ChangeLogTest(django.test.TestCase): def test_one(self): do_something_which_creates_two_log_entries() log = LogEntry.objects.get(id=1) assert_log_entry_correct(log) log = LogEntry.objects.get(id=2) assert_log_entry_correct(log) This will pass because only two log entries were ever created. However, if another test is added to ChangeLogTest and it happens to run before test_one, the primary keys of the log entries are no longer 1 and 2, they might be 2 and 3. Now test_one fails. This is actually a two part question: Is it possible to force ./manage.py test to flush the database between each test case? Since Django doesn't flush the DB between each test by default, maybe there is a good reason. Does anyone know?

So my question, looking at the pro's and con's, Google Ranking, time to implement etc. which method should I use? Thanks!

Application: Updating an old .NET web app with a million pages and grids to have all the grids maintain their sort. They currently access helper code to format themselves graphically on load and on sort. I figured I could add to that code to check for a key based on the page and grid id in a collection in session to see if it has a previous expression on load. and the on sort update/add its appropriate item in the collection.   Scenario: I have a fairly generic table (Data), that has an identity column. The data in this table is grouped (lets say by city). The users need an identifier in order for printing on paper forms, etc. The users can only access their cites data, so if they use the identity column for this purpose they will see odd numbers (e.g. a 'New York' user might see 1,37,2028... as the listed keys. Idealy they would see 1,2,3... (or something similar) The problem of course is concurrency, this being a web application you can't just have something like: UserId = Select Count(*)+1 from Data Where City='New York' Has anyone come up with any cunning ways around this problem?

  Hi, I have a Dictionary object that is formed using a double as its key values. It looks like this: Dictionary<double, ClassName> VariableName = new Dictionary<double, ClassName>(); For my project I have to have the key as the double as I require values like 1.1,1.2,2.1,2.2,etc in my system. Everything in my system works great except when I want to delete all the keys in a group eg all the 1 values would be 1.1,1.2, etc. I can delete rows if I know the full value of the key eg 1.1 but in my system I will only know the whole number. I tried to do the following but get an error: DictionaryVariable.Remove(j => Convert.ToInt16(j.Key) == rowToEdit).OrderByDescending(j => j.Key); Is there anyway to remove all rows per int value by converting the key? • How to temporarily change all default user settings without destroying the original?

  My app is based strongly on a lot of NSUserDefault keys and values. I want to implement a temporary defaults profile which the user can activate to get a special task done easily. For this, some of the user defaults must be changed temporarily so the app adjusts it's interface appropriately. I started to just manually change those NSUserDefaults settings, but this also destroys the user's original settings. Is it possible to keep a backup of the user's NSUserDefault settings and restore them after the user quits the temporary mode or the app? Like I see it, NSUserDefaults actually is just an NSMutableDictionary which is generated out of a plist file. So I would just make a deep copy of that and later assign that copy somehow back to NSUserDefaults?

  I am working with the sample Home application project on http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/Home/index.html I've added another value to the THUMBS_IDS and IMAGE_IDS Integer arrays in the Wallpaper class for a total of four wallpaper options. When I run the application with Device API version 7, Skin: HVGA, hw.lcd.density: 160, in portrait layout, the fourth wallpaper option is not shown. I need to use the directional keys in the emulator to see the 4th wallpaper option, because the first option is centered. I have modified only the wallpaper.xml file with a variety of android:layout_* options with no success at this point. How do I show all four of my wallpaper options?

  I need to store data to represent this: Water + Fire = Steam Water + Earth = Mud Mud + Fire = Rock The goal is the following: I have draggable HTML divs, and when <div id="Fire"> and <div id="Mud"> overlap, I add <div id="Rock"> to the screen. Ever played Alchemy on iPhone or Android? Same stuff Right now, the way I'm doing this is a JS object : var stuff = { 'Steam' : { needs: [ 'Water', 'Fire'] }, 'Mud' : { needs: [ 'Water', 'Earth'] }, 'Rock' : { needs: [ 'Mud', 'Fire'] }, // etc... }; and every time a div overlaps with another one, I traverse the object keys and check the 'needs' array. I can deal with that structure but I was wondering if I could do any better? Edit: I should add that I also need to store a few other things, like a short description or an icon name. I am talking about query with linq for Database tables.I understand what Join and GroupJoin does but I really couldn't understand where i will need it.I feel that Join does all what i will need but if there is something which Join can't without GroupJoin so i feel that situation is meaningless or useless. For example: Persons table in relation with Phones and Phones table hold foreign keys of Persons and one person can have one more phone number.If we want to brings all persons who has phone numbers and who hasn't too so we will need GroupJOin but what for we will need this query ? Can u give me good reason , example or explenation for using GroupJoin ?

• Cleaner way to store to replace a scalar hash value with an array ref?

  I am building a hash where the keys, associated with scalars, are not necessarily unique. I want the desired behavior to be that if the key is unique, the value is the scalar. If the key is not unique, I want the value to be an array reference of the scalars associated witht the key. Since the hash is built up iteratively, I don't know if the key is unique ahead of time. Right now, I am doing something like this: if(!defined($hash{$key})){ $hash{$key} = $val; } elseif(ref($hash{$key}) ne 'ARRAY'){ my @a; push(@a, $hash{$key}); push(@, $val); $hash{$key} = \@a; } else{ push(@{$hash{$key}}, $val); } Is there a simpler way to do this?
