• Network Issues only on one network with a Broadcom BCM4312

  My Ubuntu 11.10 laptop is having network connection issues...only on one network. I have a BCM4312 card and I'm using the proprietary driver. Whenever I connect to a network over wireless connection, I have no trouble except for one network. In my dorm, if I try to connect to the wireless network, it stays connected from anywhere to 30 seconds to 30 minutes before it will still be "connected" according to the indicator but there is no incoming/outgoing internet connection. This only happens in this building. Other networks with the same name at other buildings on my campus have no issue whatsoever. I took it to the tech department here and they keep claiming it's my laptop; but, if I can connect to other networks with absolutely no issues, why can't my laptop connect here? So, here's my question: Is it my laptop, or is it the network? As a side note, no one else that I know has issues on this network but one; she's running Windows 7 and I forget what kind of laptop it is. One of the people in my hall runs Ubuntu 12.04 and has no problem with the wireless. What do you all think of this?

• Should I start making connections even if I'm not ready for a job yet?

  The first job is always the hardest to get and I'm not exception. I'm 23 years old and I have no college degree but planned on going to college this year if all goes well (CS of course). I'm self-studying java right now. I know most of the topics related to the language besides the more advanced topics and I'm beginning to look at open source projects. I would like to find a job (at least a part time job) after a year or two when I'll gain more experience and learn more about java technologies and other technologies that interest me. Finding a job will be a bit difficult because most of the people (or a lot of them at least) at my current age already have 2 years or more of experience, so I will be somewhat disadvantaged. Should I start building connections and joining websites such as linkedin ? I never bothered to look into it because I'm not much of a social network person. If I start contributing to open source projects and create personal projects for 2 years could I apply for jobs that require 1-2 years of experience? Does this experience count ?

• Strange behavior on Gnome after update on from 13.04 to 13.10

  I made an automatic update on my Ubuntu 13.10 (from 13.04) system today. Since this point of time, I am in really big trouble. I use a VNC server with Gnome classic, after the update my Gnome was gone. So i tried everything. Checked the xstartup file of vncserver. Right now I reached a point where I can't find the answer. The logfile says that gnome-session-fallback is missing, even directly after I installed it with apt-get (tried it serveral times, installing, uninstalling and so on). I have no chance to use it as you can see in this terminal copy: root@ip-xxx:~/.vnc# apt-get install gnome-session-fallback Reading package lists... • Questioning the motivation for dependency injection: Why is creating an object graph hard?

  Dependency injection frameworks like Google Guice give the following motivation for their usage (source): To construct an object, you first build its dependencies. But to build each dependency, you need its dependencies, and so on. So when you build an object, you really need to build an object graph. Building object graphs by hand is labour intensive (...) and makes testing difficult. But I don't buy this argument: Even without dependency injection, I can write classes which are both easy to instantiate and convenient to test. • Review: Data Modeling 101

  I just recently read “Data Modeling 101”by Scott W. Ambler where he gave an overview of fundamental data modeling skills. I think this article was excellent for anyone who was just starting to learn or refresh their skills in regards to the modeling of data.  Scott defines data modeling as the act of exploring data oriented structures.  He goes on to explain about how data models are actually used by defining three different types of models. Types of Data Models Conceptual Data Model  Logical Data Model (LDMs) Physical Data Model(PDMs) He further expands on modeling by exploring common data modeling notations because there are no industry standards for the practice of data modeling. Scott then defines how to actually model data by expanding on entities, attributes, identities, and relationships which are the basic building blocks of data models. In addition he discusses the value of normalization for redundancy and demoralization for performance. Finally, he discuss ways in which Developers and DBAs can become better data modelers through the use of practice, and seeking guidance from more experienced data modelers.

  I have been having problems wrapping my brain around how to properly utilize the modular extension for Codeigniter. From what I understand, modules should be entirely independent of one another so I can work on one module and not have to worry about what module my teammate is working on. I am building a frontend and a backend to my site, and am having confusion about how I should structure my applications. The first part of my question is should I use the app root controllers to run modules, or should users go directly to the modules by urls?   I am trying to install postgresql on ubuntu. I tried installing postgresql using apt-get install postgresql Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... After this operation, 57.3kB of additional disk space will be used. debconf: delaying package configuration, since apt-utils is not installed Selecting previously deselected package postgresql. (Reading database ... 42866 files and directories currently installed.) Unpacking postgresql (from .../postgresql_8.4.9-0ubuntu0.10.04_all.deb) ... Setting up postgresql (8.4.9-0ubuntu0.10.04) ... But postgresql is not installed properly. I tried purging and reinstalling it .But I am not able to find a solution. Please help we with this. Thanks, Ramya.

This is an excellent introduction to C# programming and a manual for those with experience. Having read through book, I am very impressed by its practical approach to C#. I cannot improve on the by-line "Get started on your C# journey with an expert by your side leading by example" Adam Freeman teaches C# by precept and example. I suspect he drives a Volvo C30 as it comes up in many of the code examples! Throughout the book there are numerous links back and forth so as to avoid over complicating the current topic. I have have no hesitation in recommending this book both to programmers starting out with C# and to the seasoned professional. It is a book that should be on every C# development team's book shelf.

  I am a developer but only intend on doing the front-end work for getting Reddit-like upvote / downvote functionality going on an upcoming site I'm building. I have never had to contract a developer for back-end work to implement code for me so I am quite in the dark on how much I should expect to pay and how long it could take to get the site going. I could be taken for a ride as the developer could distort the time it would take at a seemingly regular rate (hourly/day) or could otherwise distort their rate. Please could you give me help on this. I know you need some guidance on the nature of the site so here it is. I have a Reddit type template with CSS and PHP included. I then downloaded Pligg code that's intended to do the job of the Reddit upvote downvote functionality. How long would a developer roughly need to unite the theme and front end with the back-end functionality? I do understand it's not a lot of info but I'm sure you're experienced enough to have an instinct for the size of the project. Also, should I work on an hourly/day rate/ project payment agreement?

• Computer science curriculum for non-CS major?

  Hi all, I would like to have some ideas for building up my foundation CS skills. I have started programming computers 10 years ago and have made a pretty good career out of it. However, I cannot stop thinking that the path that brought me here was very particular, and if something goes wrong (e.g. I get laid off) it would be harder to find a job here in the US on the same salary level, OR in a top company. The reason I say that is that I am a self-learner; my degree is not in Computer Science so although I master C/C++/Java, I do not have the formal CS and mathematical background that many other software developers (esp. here in the US) have. When I look at job interview questions from Apple, Google, Amazon, I have the impression that I'd flunk those technical interviews at some point. Don't get me wrong, I know my algorithms and data structures, but when things dive too deeply into the CS realm I am in trouble. What can I do to close the gap? I was thinking about a MSc in CS, but will I even UNDERSTAND what's going on there if I'm not a CS undergrad? Should I go back to basics and get a BSc in CS instead? I always tend to go into self-study mode when I want to learn new stuff, but I have the impression that I will need more formal education in CS if I want to have a shot at working at those kinds of companies. • What's a good Game development platform for a platformer game with these characteristics?

  Yes, I know, the best way to make an indie game is to learn to code. I've got some scripting experience, but I want to do worldbuilding with already-existing tools (and communities surrounding those tools), and I've been really impressed with games like An Untitled Story that were made with pre-packaged toolsets at their core, like Game Maker. :) So I'm planning to make my game using either Game Maker or something like it. The basic parameters of my planned game: -2D platformer. -Physics/speed akin to Sonic the Hedgehog. -Large, non-linear world, flowing as seamlessly as possible -- think Super Metroid, but without the forced screen transitions. The first two points have me leaning toward Game Maker -- Plenty of 2D platformers have been made with it, and there are serviceable, openly available Sonic-the-Hedgehog-style physics engines for it that could be adapted to my needs with minimal muss and fuss. But the third makes me antsy -- from what limited information I hear, Game Maker has problems with large levels/boards/screens/whateveryoucallthem, thus necessitating transitions between screens. I want to avoid that if at all possible -- it would, I believe, fundamentally alter the flow of the game. I understand that generally speaking, the more you have loaded into memory the more things are going to chug (especially for a one-size-fits-all game development platform that isn't a model of efficient coding), but I'm hoping there are systems that can un-load objects that are sufficiently far offscreen and thus better produce seamlessness. Any thoughts, people? :) The sooner I can get a basic pre-fab physics engine and world-building program up and running, the sooner I can start prototyping areas and generally tooling around. Should I be looking at Game Maker, or elsewhere? (My current plan is to more-or-less build the game prototype-style, then worry about art and sound at the very end once the damn thing is playable.)

  I have this idea of building a website which service JSON data through restful services framework. And will not use any template engines like jsp/jsf/freemarker. Just pure html5 and Javascript libs. What do you think of the pros and cons of such design ? Just for elaboration and brain storming a friend of mine argued with the following concerns: sounds like gwt this way you won't have any control over you service api for example say you wanna charge the user per request how will you handle it? how will you control your design and themes? what about the 1st request the browser make? not easy with this all of the user's requests will come with "Accept" header "application/json" how will you separate browser from abuser? this way all of your public apis will be used by third party apps abusively and you won't be able to lock it since you won't be able to block the normal user browser We won't use compiled html anyway but may be something like freemarker and in that case you won't expose any of your json resources to the unauthorized user but you will expose all the html since any browser can access them all the well known 1st class services do this can you send me links to what you've read? keep in mind the DOM based XSS it will be a nightmare ofc, if what you say is applicable.

• Is the development of CLI apps considered "backward"?

  I am a DBA fledgling with a lot of experience in programming. I have developed several CLI, non interactive apps that solve some daily repetitive tasks or eliminate the human error from more complex albeit not so daily tasks. These tools are now part of our tool box. I find CLI apps are great because you can include them in an automated workflow. Also the Unix philosophy of doing a single thing but doing it well, and letting the output of a process be the input of another, is a great way of building a set of tools than would consolidate into an strategic advantage. My boss recently commented that developing CLI tools is "backward", or constitutes a "regression". I told him I disagreed, because most CLI tools that exist now are not legacy but are live projects with improved versions being released all the time. Is this kind of development considered "backwards" in the market? Does it look bad on a rèsumè? I also considered all solutions whether they are web or desktop, should have command line, non-interactive options. Some people consider this a waste of programming resources. Is this goal a worthy one in a software project?

• Microkernel architectural pattern and applicability for business applications

  We are in the business of building customizable web applications. We have the core team that provides what we call as the core platform (provides services like security, billing etc.) on top of which core products are built. These core products are industry specific solutions like telecom, utility etc. These core products are later used by other teams to build customer specific solutions in a particular industry. Until now we have a loose separation between platform and core product. The customer specific solutions are build by customizing 20-40% of the core offering and re-packaging. The core-platform and core products are released together as monolithic apps (ear). I am looking to improvise the current situation so that there is a cleaner separation on these 3. This allows us to have evolve each of these 3 separately etc. I've read through the Mircokernel architecture and kind of felt that I can take apply the principles in my context. But most of my reading about this pattern is always in the context of operating systems or application servers etc. I am wondering if there are any examples on how that pattern was used for architecting business applications. Or you could provide some insight on how to apply that pattern to my problem.

• How to handle a player's level and its consequent privileges?

  I'm building a game similar to Mafia Wars where a player can do tasks for his gang and gain experience and thus advancing his level. The game is built using PHP and a Mysql database. In the game I want to limit the resources allowed to player based on his level. For example: ________| (Max gold) | (Max army size) | (Max moves) | ... Level 1 | 1000 | 100 | 10 | ... Level 2 | 1500 | 200 | 20 | ... Level 3 | 3000 | 300 | 25 | ... . . . In addition certain features of the game won't be allowed until a certain level is reached such as players under Level 10 can't trade in the game market, players under Level 20 can't create alliances,...etc. The way I have modeled it is by implementing a very loooong ACL (Access Control List) with about 100 entries (an entry for each level). However, I think there may be a simpler approach to this seeing that this feature have been implemented in many games before.

• Graduate expectations versus reality

  When choosing what we want to study, and do with our careers and lives, we all have some expectations of what it is going to be like. Now that I've been in the industry for almost a decade, I've been reflecting a bit on what I thought (back when I was studying Computer Science) programming working life was going to be like, and how it's actually turning out to be. My two biggest shocks (or should I say, broken expectations) by far are the sheer amount of maintenance work involved in software, and the overall lack of professionalism: Maintenance: At uni, we were all told that the majority of software work is maintenance of existing systems. So I knew to expect this in the abstract. But I never imagined exactly how overwhelming this would turn out to be. Perhaps it's something I mentally glazed over, and hoped I'd be building cool new stuff from scratch a lot more. But it really is the case that most jobs are overwhelmingly maintenance, bug fixing, and support oriented. Lack of professionalism: At uni, I always had the impression that commercial software work is very process-oriented and stringently engineered. I had images of ISO processes, reams of technical documentation, every feature and bug being strictly documented, and a generally professional environment. It came as a huge shock to realise that most software companies operate no differently to a team of students working on a large semester-long project. And I've worked in both the small agile hack shop, and the medium sized corporate enterprise. While I wouldn't say that it's always been outright "unprofessional", it definitely feels like the software industry (on the whole) is far from the strong engineering discipline that I expected it to be. Has anyone else had similar experiences to this? What are the ways in which your expectations of what our profession would be like were different to the reality?
