• Catches communication exception instead of custom fault exception - WCF

  On Server I'm throwing the exception like this. catch(SqlException exception) { if (exception.Message.Contains("Custom error from stored proc")) { //Exception to be thrown when authentication fails. throw new FaultException<MyServiceFault>(new MyServiceFault { MessageText = exception.Message }); } } And on client end I'm catching the exception catch(FaultException<MyServiceFault> faultException) { } Here is my MyServiceFault [DataContract] public class MyServiceFault { [DataMember] public string MessageText { get; set; } [DataMember] public Guid Id { get; set; } } The problem is that on client, it doesn't go to MyServiceFault catch block instead it goes to communication exception catch block and throws this error System.ServiceModel.CommunicationException: The underlying connection was closed: The connection was closed unexpectedly. ---> System.Net.WebException I've also decorated my service method [FaultContract(typeof(MyServiceFault))] in the interface which is implemented by my service. • MDI WinForm application and duplicate child form memory leak

  This is a WinForm MDI application problem (.net framework 3.0). It will be described in C#. Sorry it is a bit long because I try to make things as clear as possible. I have a MDI application. At some point I find that one MDI child form is never released. There is a menu that creates the MDI child form and show it. When the MDI child form is closed, it is supposed to be destroyed and the memory taken by it should be given back to .net. But to my surprise, this is not true. All the MDI child form instances are kept in memory. This is obviously a "memory leak". Well, it is not a real leak in .net. It is just that I think the closed form should be dead but somehow there is at least one unknown reference from outside world that still connect with the closed form. I read some articles on the Web. Some says that when the MDI child form is closing, I should unwire all the event handlers, otherwise some event handlers may keep my form alive. Some says that DataBindings should be cleaned before the form is closing otherwise the DataBindings will add references to some global Hashtable and thus keep my form alive. My form contains quite a lot things. Many event handlers and many DataBindings and many BindingSources and few suspected controls containing user control and HelpProvider. I create a big method that unwires all the event handlers from all the relevant controls, clear all the DataBindings and DataSources. The HelpProvider and user controls are disposed carefully. At the end, I find that, I don't have to clear DataBindings and DataSources. Event handlers are definitely causing the problem. And MDI form structure also contributes to something. During my experiments, I find that, if you create a MDI child form, even if you close it, there will still be one instance in the memory. The reference is from PropertyStore of the main form. This means, unless the main form is closed (application ends), there will always be one instance of MDI child form in the memory. The good news is that, no matter how many times you open and close the child form, there will be only one instance, not a big "leak". When it comes to event handlers, things become more tricky. I have to address that, all the event handlers on my form are anonymous event handlers. Here is an example code: //On MDI child form's design code... Button btnSave = new Button(); btnSave.Click += new System.EventHandler(btnSave_Click); Where btnSave_Click is also a method in MDI child form. The above is always the case for various controls and various types of event. To me, this is a bi-directional circular reference. btnSave keeps a reference of MDI child form via the event handler. MDI child form keeps a reference of btnSave instance. To me again, such bi-directional circular reference should not cause any problem for .net's garbage collector. This means that I do not have to explicitly unwire the event when the form is being disposed: btnSave.Click -= btnSave_Click; But the truth is not so. For some event handlers, they are safe. Ignoring them do not cause any duplicate instance. For some other event handlers, they will cause one instance remaining in the memory (similar effect as the MDI form structure, but this time caused by the hanging event handlers). For some other event handlers, they will cause every instance opened in the memory. I am totally confused about the differences between these three types of event handlers. The controls are created in the same way and the event is attached in the same way. What is the difference? (Don't tell me it is the event handle methods that make difference.) Anyone has experience of this wired scenario and has an answer for me? Thanks a lot. So now, for safety issue, I will have to unwire all the event handlers when the form is being disposed. That will be a long list of similar code for each control. Is there a general way of removing events from controls in recursive way using reflection? What about performance issue? That's the end of my story and I am still in the middle of my problem. For any help, I thank you.

• Memory leak in xbap application

  Hi, We are using many custom controls by inheriting form the WPFcontrols as the base and customizing it for our need. However, the memory used by these controls are not released, even after pages using the controls are closed, until the whole application is closed. As these application has to work for a whole day performance decreases as more and more memory gets held up. When we profiled our page we found that the controls where not getting collected as there where some binding reference or some borders or brushes etc not getting cleared from that control. We tried to use the Unload event of the controls to remove the events and some references from the control. This reduced the leak to some extent but this was slowing down closing of the page also the unload event was getting triggered when the control was even collapsed. Is there any other ways to overcome the leak? Are there any best practices to prevent memory leaks? Thanks Arvind

• How to dispose NHibernate ISession in an ASP.NET MVC App

  I have NHibernate hooked up in my asp.net mvc app. Everything works fine, if I DON'T dispose the ISession. I have read however that you should dispose, but when I do, I get random "Session is closed" exceptions. I am injecting the ISession into my other objects with Windsor. In one of the comments there's an improvement on the original code that uses the VisualStyleRenderer class in order to acquire the TreeView open and closed glyph. Running the code it draws properly the Plus and Minus sing as Windows XP would draw it, however in Windows Vista and Windows 7 the glyph for open and closed nodes are small triangles. What kind of interface, class or PInvoke, I need to use in order to acquire the right glyph?

• VIM: Close file without quiting VIM application?

  I am new to VIM. I use e and w commands to edit and to write a file. It is very convenient. I am not sure if there is "close" command to close the current file without leaving VIM? I know that q command can be used to close a file. But if it is the last file, the VIM is closed as well(actually on Mac the MacVIM does quit. Only the VIM window is closed and I could use Control-N to open a blank VIM again). I would like the VIM to stay with a blank screen.

What i want is for the popup for to be posted and the fancy box to be closed.   I'm loading an external script (that creates a new window component) into a panel, which works fine. Now, I want to access the created window from a callback function to register a closed event handler. I've tried the following: panel.load({ scripts: true, url: '/createWindow', callback: function(el, success, response, options) { panel.findByType("window")[0].on("close", function { alert("Closed"); }); } }); However, the panel seems to be empty all the time, the findByType method keeps returning an empty collection. I've tried adding events handlers for events like added to the panel but none of them got fired. So the question is: how do I access the window in the panel to register my close event handler on it?

• How to display a new frame in an an applet?

  Hello everyone, I have an applet. In this I have a JLabel component. When the user clicks this label, a new JFrame component gets displayed. I want to set the value of setDefaultCloseOperation() for this frame as JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE. However, I get a SecurityException if I do that. I read the documentation of JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE and its written that : The exit application default window close operation. If a window has this set as the close operation and is closed in an applet, a SecurityException may be thrown. It is recommended you only use this in an application. What I understood from the above is that if a frame is closed without specifying default close operation, the frame is only hidden. I want to close the frame when the user tries to close it, and not hide the frame. Is this possible?

  Installshield 2009 Premier Basic MSI: When I uninstall there is a Message Box saying that explorer has to be closed: [Title] My-Product-Name [List] Explorer [radio button 1, Selected by default] Automatically close applications and attempt to restart them after setup is complete [radio button 2] Do not close applications. (A Reboot will be required) [Ok Button] [Cancel Button] If I click OK [with radio button 1 selected] all opened folders are closed !!! How to get rid of this, I don't want any warning message box to show and not close explorer either? More info: I have a dll which is used to show explorer context menu with icons when we right click on any file/folder. This dll is registered during installation and unregistered during uninstall. When we uninstall WinRAR we don't see any such messages, do we?

• OpenNETCF DirectShowPlayerControl display is going black randomly when playing videos if the player

  I have a application that runs on touch enabled device with WinCE 3.5 OS. I have a show player control to display adds when the system is left idle for some configured amount of time.. So the DirectShowPlayerControl will be iniated every time the show player is launched and will be destroyed when it is closed... The player for the first time plays videos continuously for any amount of time. Once the player is destroyed and recreated the video are changing but the display goes black and in between if some small video is placed that alone is displayed. Whenever the form is closed am calling DirectShowPlayerControl.Dispose() method.

  If a working copy (local copy) was created from a branch, lets call it A. Coding was done in branch A, but branch A was "Closed" to commits, and branch b was opened. How do I merge my working copy changes into Branch B and commit to branch B, without commiting my changes to branch A first. Trunk - branch A. I checked out branch A and made changes. • Select points on a map

  I am just beginning design work on a problem that I'm sure has been solved before. In a web based application, I need to: a) present a map b) place a set of points (map-pins) on the map c) allow the user at his browser to draw a simple closed curve on the map with his mouse d) send the path of that curve back to the server e) on the server, select from the set of points those that are within the closed curve. What are the best API's to use for this problem? (I know I can and will do more research with Google, but I'm figuring there is probably someone who has done this that can give me some pointers to narrow my search space.) Thanks.

• ModalPopupExtender closing as soon as it opens

  Hi, I'm trying to use the AjaxToolkit's ModalPopupExtender, but it doesn't work. In fact, as soon as it opens, it's getting closed. So I can see that it is rendered, but it's getting closed in the second. I tried that with IE6 and Firefox 3, it does the samething. • CommunicationException in WCF

  Hi I have a problem with a WCF Service I've just created. This was working yesterday but for some reason it's just stopped working. Now I'm getting a "The underlying connection was closed: The connection was closed unexpectedly." I've hunted all over the web but no-one seems to know the answer. This question (about a useful parallel programming algorithm) is more about the whole series of algorithms for parallel programming. You will have to excuse me though as I am quite new to parallel programming, so maybe MapReduce or something that is a more general form of mapreduce is the "only" parallel programming construct which is available, in which case I apologise for my ignorance

• javascript to launch only ONE window for a Java applet with a given URL

  I need a javascript solution to launch only one window, with a Java Applet in it, for a given URL. I found a solution posted here on Stack Overflow - here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/528671/javascript-window-open-only-if-the-window-does-not-already-exist But it doesn't seem to work .. I get Error: launchApplication.winrefs is undefined Line: 29 I can't seem to post the code in this little box and make it look right below, so the code (my working code, plus the solution from above) is here: http://pastie.org/833879 Where is the error? As I understand it, the hash or array or whatever I use to store the called references to the windows opened this way will be lost if the calling window is closed. Is there a way to make this work even if the calling window is closed and reopened? To basically ask the browser: "Do you have a window open with the following URL?" and if so, "What is the reference to that window?" (so I can raise it).
