Windows errors, how do I find root cause and fix it? Getting several errors

My server is having issues and not responding to customer's https requests. I checked the event viewer and found several errors. These two are listed a couple of times: WINS encountered a database error. This may or may not be a serious error. WINS will try to recover from it. You can check the database error events under 'Application Log' category of the Event Viewer for the Exchange Component, ESENT, source to find out more details about database errors. If you continue to see a large number of these errors consistently over time (a span of few hours), you may want to restore the WINS database from a backup. The error number is in the second DWORD of the data section. And this one: An error occured while using SSL configuration for socket address 0.0.0.0:444. The error status code is contained within the returned data. SQL Server is not ready to accept new client connections. Wait a few minutes before trying again. If you have access to the error log, look for the informational message that indicates that SQL Server is ready before trying to connect again. [CLIENT: xxx.xxx.xxxx.xxx] I also found this in the event viewer but the computer has been restarted since this message and I have not seen it again. Configuring the Page file for crash dump failed. Make sure there is a page file on the boot partition and that is large enough to contain all physical memory. This is my virtual memory settings: I'm not familiar with WINS so I wasn't sure if that is where I start or how to resolve it. Is the WINS error causing the other problems or should I be looking somewhere else?

Find the IP of the router between me and main router/gateway?

I have a Netgear router that is the main router/gateway in and out of the network. Then I have a Linksys 54g router with WiFi that we use as are main WiFi access point The Cat5 runs from the router to the WiFi routers LAN port (not WAN). And then if you connect to that WAP you are basically on the network. I want to be able to find out what the IP address of that WAP is but so far I can't figure out how to: I've tried doing a tracert to the gateway IP but I get nothing. I've scanned all the IP addressed in the network. I've gone to the Netgear main router and looked under attached devices but it doesn't say anything. Any ideas on how I can figure out how to administer it? (I do have limited physical access but my attempt to plug into it came back with a faulty IP (in the 169 range where the rest of the office is 192.168...). I never set this router up to begin with so I'm reluctant to just kill it with the reset button because I can't get into see what the settings are set to.

qsub: How can I find out what DRM middleware exactly is installed on a cluster?

I have a user account on a very big cluster. I have previous experience with Grid Engine and want to use the cluster for array jobs. The documentation tells me to use "qsub" for load balancing / submission of many jobs. Therefore I assumed this means the cluster has Grid Engine. However all my Grid Engine scripts failed to run. I checked the documentation and it is a bit weird. Now I slowly suspect that this cluster does not actually have Grid Engine, maybe it's running something called Torque (?!). The whole terminology in the man pages is a bit weird for me as a Grid Engine user, for example they talk about "bulk jobs" instead of "array jobs". There is no referral to variables on which I rely on, like SGE_TASK_ID etc. Instead they refer to variables starting with PBS_. Still, there are qsub and qstat commands. Also qsub behaves differently, apparently it is not possible to specifiy the command line parameters with bash-script comments etc. There is a documentation for the cluster system, but it does not say what the DRM middleware actually is - it refers to the entire DRM system simply as "qsub". I tried qsub --version qsub: 1.2 2010/8/17 I am not sure what I am actually running when I invoke qsub on that cluster! My question is, how can I find out if I am running Grid Engine or Torque (or whatever it is), and which version?

How to find out what is causing a slow down of the application on this server?

This is not the typical serverfault question, but I'm out of ideas and don't know where else to go. If there are better places to ask this, just point me there in the comments. Thanks. Situation We have this web application that uses Zend Framework, so runs in PHP on an Apache web server. We use MySQL for data storage and memcached for object caching. The application has a very unique usage and load pattern. It is a mobile web application where every full hour a cronjob looks through the database for users that have some information waiting or action to do and sends this information to a (external) notification server, that pushes these notifications to them. After the users get these notifications, the go to the app and use it, mostly for a very short time. An hour later, same thing happens. Problem In the last few weeks usage of the application really started to grow. In the last few days we encountered very high load and doubling of application response times during and after the sending of these notifications (so basically every hour). The server doesn't crash or stop responding to requests, it just gets slower and slower and often takes 20 minutes to recover - until the same thing starts again at the full hour. We have extensive monitoring in place (New Relic, collectd) but I can't figure out what's wrong; I can't find the bottlekneck. That's where you come in: Can you help me figure out what's wrong and maybe how to fix it? Additional information The server is a 16 core Intel Xeon (8 cores with hyperthreading, I think) and 12GB RAM running Ubuntu 10.04 (Linux 3.2.4-20120307 x86_64). Apache is 2.2.x and PHP is Version 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.11. If any configuration information would help analyze the problem, just comment and I will add it. How to find the next generated value for a auto-increment column?

I face some trouble with IBM DB2's auto-increment columns. At first, all my columns were defined as GENERATED ALWAYS, but since I had trouble with this when using the "db2 import ..." command, I changed them to GENERATED BY DEFAULT. This is necessary, sinceI need the IDs to be consistent, because other tables reference them. So using "db2 import ... modified by identityignore ..." isn't an option. When I now import data, the IDs are inserted correctly, but everytime I do this, I have to remember to set a new start for the auto-increment column by getting the highest Id+1 and alter the column like this: SELECT MAX(mycolumn)+ 1 FROM mytable; ALTER TABLE mytable ALTER COLUMN mycolumn RESTART WITH <above_result>; If I forget this, an Insert-Statement will fail with an duplicate PK error, since the auto-increment column is the primary key. So my question is: Is there a way to find the next value for an auto-increment column, so I could write Statements that would check, if this value is less then the SELECT MAX and needs to be set? Or: Isn't this whole thing as complicated as it seems to me? Could I somehow import data, preserving the IDs and have the auto-increment column still working as expected?

How to find what files / directories are not copied yet?

Hi all, I found the following 'nice' situation: An archive of few disks (actually three disks) which has a bunch of photos (more or less) organized. Well, this is good. A big disk shared on a network which has a bunch of photos which has another folder structure (even if is somewhat recognizable for a human being) than the archive described above, but some of the files on this big network share are the same with the files from the archive. Well, this is bad. What we need is to move the different (new) files from the network share in the archive (perhaps we'll use for this a new disk added to archive). The program that we need is different from a regular File Duplicate Finder program because usually the File Duplicate Finder finds the duplicates from all sources comparing each file with another. We want to find the differences between the two sources. It is fine for us to have a report generated in text file which after this we'll use to do our move. A Windows solution will be preferred. Any ideas? TIA

Hibernation fails; The system cannot find the file specified

Recently I installed Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS on my Lenovo Y480. Hibernation was working properly after the Ubuntu install, but I was making sure all of the operating systems on my system worked, including OneKey Recovery (recovery partition). It is of note that I installed Windows 7 from scratch with a disk image I downloaded off of my university's DreamSpark program, and further to that I had to image the partition with Paragon Backup & Recovery, repartition to convert the Windows partition to extended, install Ubuntu, and then restore the image. During that process I also used the Windows disc to edit the BCD as to reuse the existing entry for the restored partition. I also used the automated "repair your computer" option. With verification, I noticed that the "repair your computer" option actually wrote to the wrong BCD (the recovery partition), and I mounted the partition and restored the original BCD (from a copy I made earlier), and rebooted. At this point my GRUB broke, and I was able to restore it. At this point hibernation broke. I tried powercfg /h off and powercfg /h on, rebooted, and nothing. Also tried increasing the hibernation file size as directed on this post, but it still doesn't work. Executing shutdown /h yields The system cannot find the file specified.(2). What file? It seems that mounting the system partition sometimes works, but I don't want to keep it mounted in case it gets written to accidentally. How do I permanently fix this?

How do I find the Serial Number of a USB Drive?

I'm trying to re-enable USB Autoplay in a secure way, by installing a program on each of the computers that I use so that I can run my launcher (PStart in this case) whenever I plug in my specific USB drive. The tool that I'm using to enable this - AutoRunGuard - needs the serial number of the USB drive that I am using. I can't figure out where to find this in Windows. Ideally I would not need to install and run a separate program to do this (seemingly) simple task. Since this is a pretty easy question, bonus points if you also tell me how to discover it in Linux as well. What steps do I need to take to retrieve a USB Drive's serial number? UPDATE: Just incase people come here looking for the answer for AutoRunGuard, I discovered that they don't want the USB device serial number, but the volume serial number. The drive serial can be found by going into the command line, navigating to the drive, and executing dir. The volume serial number is found in the top two lines - use it without the dash.

How do I find and kill a php loop (process)?

I have a php script that I have been developing which calls an external api within a loop. It is being tested on a VPS which is running LAMP on Debian. I noticed this morning that the api was not responding to my script. When I called the provider, they told me that my server had been calling the api 1000's of times per hour for the past 10 hours. I am assuming that a php script (which I have been working on the day before and testing on my VPS) entered into an infinite loop during one of the executions, and never came out (I have been testing it from the command prompt, and not over the web.) I have attempted to stop and start Apache, but the api support staff says that the calls are still coming in from my server address. How can I find and stop the process? Also, is there a possibility that the Apache stop/start solved the problem, but the api is still trying to sort through past calls? Please forgive me for not using my local test environment correctly. Edit: I do not know the process name, I need to discover the name (or pid) based on behavior.

Easiest way to find out if user has either Windows 7 or Vista (through telephone support)?

If you have to provide some initial troubleshooting support by phone [or email], and you don't have access to the PC itself, what is the easiest and most foolproof question to find out if the 'dumb' user is using either Windows 7 or Windows Vista? For example: determining if the user has either Windows XP or Windows Vista/7 is easy. Just ask the user if the button at the left bottom corner is (a) either square with the word 'Start' on it, or (b) it is a round button. But how to determine the difference between Vista and 7? Edit: For all the existing answers the user has to type something, and do it correctly. Sometimes even that is already hard for a computer illiterate user. My XP example just requires looking. If it exists (although I am afraid it doesn't), I think a solution that is just based on something this is visually different between Vista and 7 would stand above all others. (Which makes Dan's suggestion to turn over the box and look at the label" not so stupid). Perhaps the small 'show desktop' rectangle at the right side of the task bar (was that present in Vista)?

Windows Vista Context Menu>New... does not find entries

I was trying to remove a virus and foolishly did not backup registry keys I deleted because I (thought) I only deleted entries from the folders of programs I did not care about. However, I think I have done something wrong here: Now when I open a context menu (right click) in any location and hover over the "New..." option I don't get any options. It has a greyed out box saying "(Empty)". So far I have found out the the entries themselves are still there (using the locations provided here: Windows 7 - Add an item to 'new' context menu). I have also used a program recommended in that thread which also finds the entries intact and enabled. So it seems maybe I have deleted the entry which tells Vista where to look to find the files that can be created. How can I restore this so entries are shown again? I know system restore is an option but as I have said I did this when removing a (very stubborn) virus so that is the last resort.

Javascript not able to read data generated by ajax script

I have a situation in which my Jquery Ajax script generates HTML table. And another script is meant to filter the table column by providing a dropdown comprising of unique values in that particular column. If i have static content in html page the filter script works fine. But is not able to read table content when it is generated via Ajax that is during runtime. Any idea what could be the reason. mint linux, DVD drive keeps randomly being accessed. unsure how to find culprit

I have a workstation with mint linux 12. It seems like the DVD drive on the machine keeps randomly "activating". By activating it makes noise, the light turns on, and it seems like it is checking if a disk is in it. At first I thought I was being hacked and someone/something was trying to check if I had media in the DVDRom drive. I ruled that out with netstat and rkhunter. Linux networking crash: best steps to find out the cause?

One of our Linux (CentOS) servers was unreachable last night. The server was not reachable in any way except for the remote console. After logging in with the remote console, it turned out I could not ping any outside hosts either. A simple service network restart solved the issue, but I am still wondering what could have caused this. My log files seem to indicate no error at all (except for the various daemons that need a network connection and failed after the network failure). Are there any additional steps I can take to find out the cause of this problem? EDIT: this just happened again. The server was completely unresponsive until I issued a networking service restart. Any advise is welcome. Could this be caused by a faulty hardware component? Until today I had a manually installed Eclipse (one of the official bundles available on their site), I've tried to replace it by the repository version and I get the same errors. What should I do to make Eclipse work again? Another person reports: Same happened to me after updating last night. Already tried reinstalling Eclipse and Java, starting Eclipse with -clean and starting new workspace and new .eclipse dir, but nothing helps.

Ad-hoc String Manipulation With Visual Studio

Visual studio supports relatively advanced string manipulation via the ‘Quick Replace’ dialog. Today I had a requirement to modify some html, replacing line breaks with unordered list items. For example, I need to convert: Infrastructure<br/> Energy<br/> Industrial development<br/> Urban growth<br/> Water<br/> Food security<br/> to: <li>Infrastructure</li> <li>Energy</li> <li>Industrial development</li> <li>Urban growth</li> <li>Water</li> <li>Food security</li> This cannot be done with a simple search-and-replace but it can be done using the Quick Replace regular expression support. To use regular expressions expand ‘Find Options’, check ‘Use:’ and select ‘Regular Expressions’ Typically, Visual Studio regular expressions use a different syntax to every other regular expression engine. We need to use a capturing group to grab the text of each line so that it can be included in the replacement. The syntax for a capturing group is to replace the part of the expression to be captured with { and }. So my regular expression: {.*}\<br/\> means capture all the characters before <br/>. Note that < and > have to be escaped with \. In the replacement expression we can use \1 to insert the previously captured text. If the search expression had a second capturing group then its text would be available in \2 and so on. Visual Studio’s quick replace feature can be scoped to a selection, the current document, all open documents or every document in the current solution.

Is there a command-line utility app which can locate a specific block of lines in a text file?

The text "search and replace" utility programs I've seen, seem to only search on a line-by-line basis... Is there a command-line tool which can locate one block of lines (in a text file), and replace it with another block of lines.? For example: Does the test file file contain this exact group of lines: 'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe. 'Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!' I want this, so that I can replace multiple lines of text in a file and know I'm not overwriting the wrong lines. I would never replace "The Jabberwocky" (Lewis Carroll), but it makes a novel example :)

So I'm trying to create a bash script that looks for two words in my syslog file. Then I want the script to print out how many times those two words have appeared. Also I want it to print it out for every hour of the day. So like if the word dog appeared 4 times during the first hour of today, it says Hour one, dog 4. Finally at the end of the script I want it to print out how many times those words appeared all day. The sudo code I have thus far is if 2 > hour find permit find block print both finish if 1 < hour < 2 find permit find block print both finish if 2 < hour < 3 find permit find block print both finish command is grep -o "\WORD\" Syslog.txt * | sort | uniq -c

How to HitTest in a WPF Grid Panel to find column index.

Hi. We need to create a "timeline" feature where a user is allowed to drag and draw "time spans" into a WPF grid (we thought this better than a Canvas since it has resizing capabilities). Each span spans multiple columns, but only one row. We utilize the PreviewMouseDown/Up/Move events to see when the user clicks, drags, and releases the mouse. On the "Down" we create a new rectangle and on the "Move" we resize the rectangle, settings its ColumnSpan property to the correct value every time the mouse enteres the next column. At this point the grid has 48 1-star-sized columns. How do we find out which column the user has clicked on? Right now we are unable to find the column using the VisualTreeHelper.HitTest function. We would like to position the rectangle correctly via Grid.SetColumn(rect, X) and then resize it as needed using Grid.SetColumnSpan(rect, Y) Has anyone done something like this before and can help us? Or, is there a better way to draw what we need? Thanks.
