• What build tools do not depend on java (or Ruby)?

  I'm wondering what generic build tools out there include their binary run-times and do not depend on another environment not shipped with them. For example, ANT requires Java, Rake requires Ruby, etc.. would be great if talking about also target-platform-agnostic tools, where I'd just give whatever command for building, whatever command for testing, etc.. and can then define my artifacts in CI or so. Would see something like that useful for building .NET projects (say, on both Windows .NET and Mono), and Node JS projects especially. I do not want to install Java and / or Ruby if what I want is a .NET build or a Node JS build. This is a bit of general awareness question not an exact problem I'm facing, that's why it's here not on StackOverflow. Update: To explain a bit more, what I'm after is the build script that would run MSBuild for compiling for example ( in .NET, and then maybe several Node/NPM commands in Node, etc..), and then have the rest build/test steps, instead of setting these all in MSBuild (again, in .NET case, also, wondering if there is equivalent story in Node).

• How to restrict paddle movement using Farseer Physics engine 3.2

  I am new to using Farseer Physics Engine 3.2(FPE), so please bear with my questions. Also, since FPE 3.2 is based on Box2D, I have been reading Box2D manual and pieces of code scattered in samples to better understand terminology and usage. Pong is usually my testbed whenever I try to do something new. Here is one of the issue I am running into: How can I restrict paddles to move only along Y axis, because the ball comes in and knocks off the paddles and everything floats in space afterwards ? (Box = Rectangle and ball = circle) I know MKS is the unit system, but is there a recommendation for sizes/position to be used ? I know this is a very generic question, but it would be good to know a simple set of values that one could use for making a game as simple as pong. Between box2d and FPE, I have some doubts: what is the recommended way of making a body in FPE ? world.CreateBody() does not exist in FPE Box2d manual recommends never to "new" body(since Box2D uses Small Object allocators), so is there a recommended way in Farseer to create a body (apart from factories) ? In box2d, it is recommended to keep a track of the body object, since it is also the parent to fixture(s). Why is it that in most of the examples, the fixture object is tracked ? Is there a reason why body is not tracked ? Thanks

• Examples of permission-based authorization systems in .Net?

  I'm trying to figure out how to do roles/permissions in our application, and I am wondering if anyone knows of a good place to get a list of different permission-based authorization systems (preferably with code samples) and perhaps a list of pros/cons for each method. I've seen examples using simple dictionaries, custom attributes, claims-based authorization, and custom frameworks, but I can't find a simple explanation of when to use one over another and what the pros/cons are to using each method. (I'm sure there's other ways than the ones I've listed....) I have never done anything complex with permissions/authorization before, so all of this seems a little overwhelming to me and I'm having trouble figuring out what what is useful information that I can use and what isn't. What I DO know is that this is for a Windows environment using C#/WPF and WCF services. Some permission checks are done on the WCF service and some on the client. Some are business rules, some are authorization checks, and others are UI-related (such as what forms a user can see). They can be very generic like boolean or numeric values, or they can be more complex such as a range of values or a list of database items to be checked/unchecked. Permissions can be set on the group-level, user-level, branch-level, or a custom level, so I do not want to use role-based authorization. Users can be in multiple groups, and users with the appropriate authorization are in charge of creating/maintaining these groups. It is not uncommon for new groups to be created, so they can't be hard-coded.

  Content Highlights Our Application Composer series had fresh articles on the related internal data model and lots more on Groovy, including how to manipulate your data and a useful table showing you when and where groovy scripting can be used. For those just getting started with Fusion Applications user security, this article gave some handy examples to get your going. Jani's Java Cloud Service series continued strongly, with examples of integration using ADFbc, a Web Service Proxy client, and the ADF Data Control. From Other Teams The Oracle A-Team provided a broad set of articles during May, with various topics related to Fusion Applications including patching and performance management for on-premises deployments, and generic content on both integration and data extraction via web services. As part of their presentation to Oracle Israel User Group, our AppsUX colleagues explained the fresh new type of interface to Oracle Sales, through the voice mobile apps. This was in addition to demonstrations of the newer Release 8 Simplified UI customization options. Finally Angelo, our colleague in Platform Technical Services, explained in his blog how to use the findCriteria element included in all Oracle Sales web services to reduce the data returned, making response payloads much more specific, lightweight and therefore usable. • XNA 4.0: Problem with loading XML content files

  I'm new to XNA so hopefully my question isn't too silly. I'm trying to load content data from XML. My XML file is placed in my Content project (the new XNA 4 thing), called "Event1.xml": <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <XnaContent> <Asset Type="MyNamespace.Event"> // error on this line <name>1</name> </Asset> </XnaContent> My "Event" class is placed in my main project: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Xml.Linq; namespace MyNamespace { public class Event { public string name; } } The XML file is being called by my main game class inside the LoadContent() method: Event temp = Content.Load<Event>("Event1"); And this is the error I'm getting: There was an error while deserializing intermediate XML. Cannot find type "MyNamespace.Event" I think the problem is because at the time the XML is being evaluated, the Event class has not been established because one file is in my main project while the other is in my Content project (being a XNA 4.0 project and such). I have also tried changing the build action of the xml file from compile to content; however the program would then not be able to find the file and would give this other warning: Project item 'Event1.xml' was not built with the XNA Framework Content Pipeline. Set its Build Action property to Compile to build it. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

• Graphics performance of 945GME

  Edit: Since setting Appearance - Visual Effects up to a stunning "Normal", I now get ~35 FPS in glxgears right after login, with nothing else running :( I'm getting terrible graphics performance in NeverWinter Nights (native with SoU+HotU+CEP2) on my Eee PC 1005HAB. Even with all graphics settings (including the "advanced" ones) at minimum I get about 2-10 FPS, depending on the scene. Firefox is really sluggish as well - Changing tabs often takes a second, scrolling is laggy, and typing this I notice the delay between pressing keys and seeing the text on screen. The rest of the OS is running OK, although general performance seems to be even worse than my old Eee PC 900. glxgears gives about 60 FPS, which is apparently as it should be (synchronized with the monitor refresh rate). Bugs like Launchpad #252094 and the instructions for Reverting the Jaunty Xorg intel driver to 2.4 are old enough that I'm afraid following the instructions would render the system unusable. Looking closer to my kern.log file in /var/log/, I notice that in every session at some point (usually withing 20' after startup) a GPE storm is triggered. When I open kern.log immediately after startup, I see that the 'GPE-storm' can be triggered by anything (a copy-action, the opening of an app like Firefox or Thunderbird, etc...). This worries me. Looking for other ACPI related events in kern.log, I find these error messages. • Update to kernel 3.12 seems to fail: uname reports old rc7

  I currently run Xubuntu 13.10 with kernel 3.12 rc7. Today I tried updating to the latest 3.12 kernel (non-rc), but this seems to fail. When installing the image and headers I see the following error passing by: ... run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/dkms 3.12.0-031200-generic /boot/vmlinuz-3.12.0-031200-generichis Error! The dkms.conf for this module includes a BUILD_EXCLUSIVE directive which does not match this kernel/arch. This indicates that it should not be built. ... After rebooting, when I do uname -r or cat /proc/version it tells me that I'm still running on the old rc7 kernel. Since my microphone wasn't working on my Sony Vaio Pro 13 I did download and install the latest ALSA drivers using the oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms package which seem to fix the problem (with the mic). Maybe this has something to do with it? I also tried removing the package using sudo apt-get purge oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms but no success.

• Updated Intel display driver causing errors when booting

  I upgraded to to Graphics Installer 1.0.6 on my Ubuntu 14.04 and installed the drivers using the Intel Graphics Installer. The laptop is Intel Ivybridge powered with Intel HD graphics. It Optimus but I have disabled the Nvidia card in bios. The Intel Graphics Installer installs the package i915-3.15-3.13-dkms.deb which I assume is the updated driver. It causes a bunch of error messages when I boot. • Is there any reason not to go directly from client-side Javascript to a database?

  So, let's say I'm going to build a Stack Exchange clone and I decide to use something like CouchDB as my backend store. If I use their built-in authentication and database-level authorization, is there any reason not to allow the client-side Javascript to write directly to the publicly available CouchDB server? Since this is basically a CRUD application and the business logic consists of "Only the author can edit their post" I don't see much of a need to have a layer between the client-side stuff and the database. I would simply use validation on the CouchDB side to make sure someone isn't putting in garbage data and make sure that permissions are set properly so that users can only read their own _user data. The rendering would be done client-side by something like AngularJS. In essence you could just have a CouchDB server and a bunch of "static" pages and you're good to go. You wouldn't need any kind of server-side processing, just something that could serve up the HTML pages. Opening my database up to the world seems wrong, but in this scenario I can't think of why as long as permissions are set properly. It goes against my instinct as a web developer, but I can't think of a good reason. So, why is this a bad idea? I feel like I should add a few generic assumptions instead of calling out CouchDB and AngularJS specifically. So let's assume that: The database can authenticate users directly from its hidden store All database communication would happen over SSL Data validation can (but maybe shouldn't?) be handled by the database The only authorization we care about other than admin functions is someone only being allowed to edit their own post We're perfectly fine with everyone being able to read all data (EXCEPT user records which may contain password hashes) Administrative functions would be restricted by database authorization No one can add themselves to an administrator role The database is relatively easy to scale There is little to no true business logic; this is a basic CRUD app

• Swap, Swapiness and Standby: swapping starts when waking up

  I'm running running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Lenovo W500 (Core2Duo T9400, 4GB Ram) Current kernel: 3.2.0-32-generic #51-Ubuntu SMP Wed Sep 26 21:33:09 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux -- but the problems exists since a couple of months, surviving quite a few software (includig kernel) updates I regularly put my machine into suspend-to-ram (S3) and when the machine comes back up Ubuntu starts to swap out processes. I was able to observe that the used swap-space starts to grow right after the box returns. See munin graphs below, the gap (obviously) shows the timeframe in STR. Needless to say that the box becomes unusable while swapping, load goes up beyond 10. What I've done so far: lowered swappiness from default (60) to 10 (via /etc/sysctl.conf: vm.swappiness=10) -- this has improved the situation much, but sometimes the problem comes back, I have not found a trigger (like memory usage) for this for now lowered swappiness to 5 -- perhaps this has brought an improvement again Before going to STR the box ran stable without (swapping) problems for hours. Today when the issue showed up again I used this script (- http://stackoverflow.com/questions/479953/how-to-find-out-which-processes-are-swapping-in-linux) to find what processes have the most used swap space.   I'm making a custom RoleProvider that I would like to use across multiple applications in the same application pool. For the administration of roles (create new role, add users to role, etc..) I would like to create a master application that I could login to and set the roles for each additional application. So for example, I might have AppA and AppB in my organization, and I need to make an application called AppRoleManager that can set roles for AppA and AppB. I am having troubles implementing my custom RoleProvider because it uses an initialize method that gets the application name from the config file, but I need the application name to be a variable (i.e. "AppA" or "AppB") and passed as a parameter. I thought about just implementing the required methods, and then also having additional methods that pass application name as a parameter, but that seems clunky. i.e. public override CreateRole(string roleName) { //uses the ApplicationName property of this, which is set in web.config //creates role in db } public CreateRole(string ApplicationName, string roleName) { //creates role in db with specified params. } Also, I would prefer if people were prevented from calling CreateRole(string roleName) because the current instance of the class might have a different applicationName value than intended (what should i do here? throw NotImplementedException?). I tried just writing the class without inheriting RoleProvider. But it is required by the framework. Any general ideas on how to structure this project? • Unattended grub configuration after kernel upgrade

  Today I have been working on automatic deployment of an ubuntu server. I got stuck on automatic updating of the server using apt-get upgrade trying to upgrade to a new kernel. The log looks like this: Setting up linux-image-3.2.0-24-generic (3.2.0-24.39) ... Testing for an existing GRUB menu.lst file ... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst (...) Then a question is presented: Package configuration +---------------------------------¦ +---------------------------------+ ¦ A new version of /boot/grub/menu.lst is available, but the version ¦ ¦ installed currently has been locally modified. ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ What would you like to do about menu.lst? ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ install the package maintainer's version ¦ ¦ keep the local version currently installed ¦ ¦ show the differences between the versions ¦ ¦ show a side-by-side difference between the versions ¦ ¦ show a 3-way difference between available versions ¦ ¦ do a 3-way merge between available versions (experimental) ¦ ¦ start a new shell to examine the situation ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ <Ok> ¦ ¦ ¦ +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ The desired outcome would be to select the first option and to continue: Replacing config file /run/grub/menu.lst with new version Updating /boot/grub/menu.lst ... done After running the upgrade by hand, I used debconf-get-selections to inspect the correct answer for the question (see other settings). It seems like update_grub_changeprompt_threeway is the question that should be answered. However, setting this using debconf-set-selections presented me with the same question: debconf-set-selections <<< "grub grub/update_grub_changeprompt_threeway select install_new" apt-get -y dist-upgrade How can this question be automated?
