• Alien: .rpm -> .deb | Compability / Built per system?

  At the moment I'm playing a bit with alien (for OpenVZ packages on Debian) and was wondering myself about one question for which I was not able to find an answer anywhere. Therefor I thought it might be smart to ask here :) The question is... If I convert a .rpm to .deb on a system, how compatible is this .deb package? What do I mean? Will the .deb be working on other systems as well or is it per-system, e.g. that on every system the .deb package will be little different? That i386 and x86_64 are different is clear, so this doesn't need to be answered :) Examples that would be nice to know are for example: .deb built on Debian 6 64-bit - Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit (compatible?) .deb built on Debian 6 64-bit - Debian 5 64-bit (compatible?) etc. Thanks anyone reading this / helping me! • Screen rotation hot key (CTRL+ALT+UP) not responding, what's going on?

  The other day my son (11 months) discovered a new hot key combination on my laptop. As I'm sure many of you are aware (I wasn't until the other day), on machines with Intel Graphics, pressing CTRL+ALT+{any arrow key} rotates the screen. After I recovered from my shock, and did a little sideways Googling to figure out how to fix it, I decided this might actually be useful. I read a lot of online documentation, and it fits better on the screen when it's rotated. Since it's a laptop, I hold the machine like a book and read it. It worked great all afternoon yesterday. But today at work I tried to show a friend this new trick, using the same laptop, and found that the CTRL+ALT+UP no longer works. I can rotate it to any orientation but the normal one. I'm guessing something else is intercepting this hot key, but what could be doing this?

• Why do people like widescreen when it is, de facto, less space?

  I find that many of my friends/non-programmers or designers like widescreens. It makes very little sense to me as you in fact have less space than a 4:3 (do the math). The closer to a perfect square the more space you actually have on your screen. I got a 21" 16:9 and two 19" 4:3 The 21" is nearly the same height, but I think its a tenth of an inch shorter if I'm correct. I forget the calculation but it is nearly the same actual space. I can understand if you're using your computer for constant movie-watching but I think that's more of people's "ideal" than a reality. Thoughts?

• How to use radiusclient-ng?

  A guy on my team compiled the radiusclient and radlogin executable found on that page. But installing it is getting more and more problematic and I can't seem to get anywhere ! I received from him: radclient libfreeradius-client.so.2 servers radiusclient.conf dictionary.dat radlogin What I'm trying to do is to install this client on a linux box and the: Access that box remotely using ssh. Then issue a authentication\accounting requests to another remote RADIUS server. But nothing seems intuitive about this and I have very little experience with linux and RADIUS protocols ! Has anyone successfully installed that client ? Thank you.

  Are there some ways field-tested ways to keep a kind of logbook for a server? Including: software installations (and de-installations) custom configurations (e.g. of a webserver, ssh daemon, etc.) personal notes The big picture. I am preparing a server and would like to extensively document the state and how it was established over time, so that a new person can easily see, what's going on and why. The setup is not too complicated, but I would like to do it anyway. I once used something like Maintain /etc with mercurial on Debian and it was nice, but I am looking for a little more flexible solution. Addendum: So I am interested in logging and documentation first. In an ideal world however, I would like to have a command, which in a few steps would take me from a bare newly installed unix system to a functional environment with all the components setup and in place by the means of, say an 'executable' log. But that would be very ideal, I imagine.

• Why does Oracle SQL Developer take so long to open?

  I think anyone who's used Oracle SQL Developer will agree that it's painfully slow on the load. My research has lead me to a solution that seems to have helped a little, and that's telling OSQLD not to check for updates on startup. However, it still takes several minutes to open. What could OSQLD possibly be doing during load time? Is there any way get it to open right away? Edit: Adding potentially relevant system specs: CPU: Intel i5-2520M 2.5 ghz Windows 7 32-bit RAM: 4 gb

• Explanation of command to uppercase the first letter of a file

  Hi I'm trying to learn to rename files with the command line, and after browsing around a lot of pages I finally found a command that uppercases the first letter of a file, but the problem is that I want to understand the meaning of each command. The command is: for i in *; do new=echo "$i" | sed -e 's/^./\U&/'; mv "$i" "$new";done I understand the 'for' kinda... but not the 'echo' or '`' and especially the sed command. if someone has a little patience to explain the meaning of each thing that'd be awesome! • Can you have a staging and production slot in Azure Websites

  I'm looking at hosting 3 Websites (there will all use the same linked database resource but I think I have to use 3 websites within Azure for this); www.website.com, provider.website.com and admin.website.com. Using Windows Azure Websites, can you have a Staging, Production slot? I think this feature is only available to Azure Cloud Services but there is little documentation on this. If its not possible, other than spinning up 3 more sites to act as the staging sites is there another way? I want the ability to "swap" from staging to production.

• Can't connect to IIS7 on one of my machines

  I have 2 computers, both running Win7 Professional x64. Computer "A" (192.168.0.10) is my work machine, it contains my tools etc. Computer "B" (192.168.0.15) is supposed to be my build server / web server for my projects I've installed IIS on "B", and installed IIS7 remote manager on "A". I'm trying to connect from A's IIS7 Manager to B's IIS but I fail. I have little knowledge of IIS, and I feel that's the main reason. I can ping B from A and get positive results so the machines do see each other. A and B are in the same workgroup but not in a domain (if that matters) - they're in my home network. What do I need to do to "see" B's IIS?

• Windows 7 file explorer preview window and password protected word documents

  When using the Windows 7 Explorer with the preview pane open you get a little preview of a file when you click on it. This includes Word, Excel spreadsheets, etc. My problem is if the Word document is password protected. Clicking on it in Explorer automatically asks for the password to display its preview. It does this if you single or double clicking on it. You then get an empty Word instance running (which allows it to display the preview) and another instance of Word with your actual file and you're asked for the password twice in total. This is annoying and untidy. Is there a way of stopping the preview pane from wanting to display password protected documents and thus not asking for the password to display a preview?

• Flag outgoing message for follow-up in Thunderbird

  More and more I need to follow up on specific messages I have sent, but memory fades. Can anyone recommend a way to flag outgoing messages "for follow-up" in Thunderbird? (Not sure but I think MS Outlook supports this.) I have a little hack, which involves a custom rule to tag incoming messages from myself to myself. Then I simply include myself in the recipient list on messages I want to follow up on. But perhaps there is a more elegant extension or technique out there?

• Using an Internal HDD as an External HDD also or an External HDD for installing SAP ?

  Is it possible and advisable to use an Internal Hard Drive as an External Hard drive also. I wanted to install SAP ECC 6 on my system which has only 250 GB but atleast 300 GB is required.I wanted to buy an External Drive first, then I heard loading SAP on an External would make it extremely slow. I'll be using it only as a beginer so even if it is a little slow i don't mind. Is it feasible to run such a big application from an External Hard disk ? So can i purchase a 500 or 1 TB Internal Hard disk and use it as an External too by fitting it with the necessary USB 3.0 Hard drive cases and cables ? or should i purchase a External and load SAP onto it ? • MacMini giving "no signal" when using the television resolutions (480p, 720p, 1080i)

  I have a Mac Mini (10.6) with a DVI out to my 720p television. It shows the options for 480p, 720p and 1080i with a little television next to the icons, along with the stand resolutions like 1024x768. The standard resolutions work fine with overscan checked, but I can't get any of the native television resolutions to work. I only get a "no signal" on my television. The input on the television is marked with 1080i/720p/480p and yet only 480p (and the PC native resolutions like 1024x768) work. What's happening?

• Is it possible to cause artificial network packet loss or latency?

  I'm trying to reproduce some issues on a deployed application where the MSSQL server and client are running in two separate machines. I think there may be network issues between the two machines, so I'd like to try and reproduce these conditions on two Hyper-V virtual machines (on the same virtual server). Of course, the network for these virtual machines is "local" so it's actually far from the conditions in a live environment. Is there a program I can run on either virtual machine which will degrade the network performance? Or maybe any other work arounds? For example, one way to reproduce the conditions may be to run the VMs on separate Hyper-V servers in geographically dispersed locations (so the SQL traffic goes over VPN or something) -- but this is a little long winded I think. There must be a simpler way.

• Which SQL Server edition?

  We need a new install of windows server and sql server to replicate a couple of databases to a geographically separate location from an existing application (over a site-to-site VPN). The source database is SQL Server 2005. However, this is a temporary solution since the client is aiming to implement a different system entirely, so we are looking to find the minimum specification of both windows server and sql server to do this. We are finding the SQL server features per edition and licensing a little difficult to understand, hence the question. Am I correct in thinking that we can replicate data using transactional replication from SQL Server 2005 to 2008 web edition and we can install sql server web edition on windows 2008 web edition also? • Can you boot/install/restore a MacBook Pro with a MacBook Air USB stick?

  The new MacBook Airs don't have optical drives, so you can't install or restore the OS via DVD. They include a little USB stick for this purpose. I have a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air. Does anyone know if it will work with my MacBook Pro? I'm thinking about removing my optical drive to put in another HD. The only sticky situation I might get into is if I need to do an install or restore on the road without an external DVD drive. • MySQL server hangs after approximately 1 month (CentOS)

  Hey guys, I've got a web server running Apache/PHP and MySQL (CentOS), and MySQL seems to hang once every month or so. As far as I can tell, there are a few slow queries that are being resolved, but other than that I can't really see any reason why MySQL would hang. I'm having problems determining the problem - nothing is showing up in /var/log/mysqld.log, and again there are a few slow queries, but nothing out of the ordinary. Load is average at the time of the crashes... Can I please get some hints on how to work out the issue? I can't reproduce on our staging environment, so I'm a little stuck.

  In cmd prompt, you can run two commands on one line like so: ipconfig /release & ipconfig /renew When I run this command in PowerShell, I get: Ampersand not allowed. The & operator is reserved for future use Does PowerShell have an operator that allows me to quickly produce the equivalent of & in cmd prompt? Any method of running two commands in one line will do. I know that I can make a script, but I'm looking for something a little more off the cuff.

• Odd Language In a BIOS Message

  So I started up my laptop today and was greeted with the following message (not a direct quote): The type of the AC adapter cannot be determined. This may interfere with your computer's performance. Try unplugging the AC adapter and then plugging it back in, thanks. The problem was that I hadn't fully secured the plug into the back of the computer. However, I was a little taken aback when a message from BIOS said, "thanks." Is this normal? Any chance the message was illegitimate (virus)?

  Do you know a Windows 7 software (not an online service) than can create an RSS feed for any webpage ? Here is what I am looking for : I manually select what is a title, what is a link and if needed what is the content that I would like to keep (article content + their related images if they exist). The software create a RSS feed from that. Then it monitors the feed every x hours (or x days at a specified time). If updates are found then send the results to my email address. (It is a little like a combination of the Firefox addon: Autopager (WYSIWYG selection which use xpath) and WebSite-Watcher (RSS software monitoring).

• Remote I/O costs with a Content Delivery Network

  As far as I know, the time complexity of scanning a directory and the amount of files in said directory are correlated due to I/O costs. Would the administrative costs of placing the files in a hashed directory tree for uploading/downloading files through a CDN API be worth it for the added efficiency? For instance, given a filename foo.mp3, the MD5 hash for this is 10ebb1120767e9de166e0f5905077cb1. Thus, storing foo.mp3 in ./10/eb/foo.mp3 would allow for less files per directory (assuming MD5 generates patterns with in Base36, this allows for 36^2 root directories with 36^2 subdirectories each and little chance of hash collision) Considering the directories themselves are not loaded, would the I/O costs of directory scanning still exist with direct uploading/downloading?

• Linux live cd with Broadcom Wi-fi support

  I am looking for a live distro that has out of the box Broadcom wireless support. I am pretty happy with my Ubuntu installation and as long as I have an ethernet connection first time installed, I can install Broadcom drivers over internet. But being a little paranoid, I make my secure operations (banking etc.) with a live cd and zero hard disk access, so nothing is recorded. So far I plug ethernet to do such things with the live cd, but it would be nice if I can do same thing with wireless.

• Lenovo G500 Re-booting failed

  I have a Lenovo G500. Yesterday it asked me to reboot the system. I did. Now it wont come back on. I have tried everything I read online like taking out the battery and holding the power button in for 20 seconds, then switching on the pc with only the ac adapter plugged in. I still only see the backlight of the pc, nothing else. I also tried to hold in the Fn key and tried all other F keys (F2, F12, etc.) I also pressed that little button next to the power button, but nothing is responding. Please help.

• Automated VLAN creation with residential Wireless devices

  We've got a few WRT devices from Linksys here, and the issue has arisen to deploy them in a relatively small environment, However, in the interest of manageability we'd like to be able to automatically VLAN (ideally NOT subnet) every user from one another. It seems obvious to me that the default firmware isn't capable of this - can OpenWRT/Tomato/DD-WRT support any sort of functionality such that new users are automatically VLANed or otherwise logically separated from other users? It seems like there's an easy IPtables or PF solution here, but I've been wrong before. (If that seemed a little ambiguous, heres an example) User 1 sends DHCP request to server, new VLAN (We'll call VLAN 1) is created, user is placed in that VLAN. Then, user 2 sends a DHCP request and is placed in VLAN 2 etc. etc.
