• Appropriate Network switch for small server cluster

  Need to build a small business server cluster for the purpose of crunching data. It will not host a web site that needs to be available 24/7. It does need to support servers that host Redis, a Cassandra database cluster, and a Python web server. Operating system will most likely be Centos 6.4 Other servers in the cluster should be able to communicate very fast with each other, especially the Redis server. This will probably require the use of internal IP addresses. We will need to use multi-data center replication to synchronize the Cassandra cluster with the one that we currently have hosted on the cloud Was looking into network switches and we are unsure of the appropriate specifications that we should be looking for. Does the switch need to be "managed" or can it be "unmanged"? Does the switch need to support IPv6 or just IPv4? Do we need an enterprise level Cisco switch, or can we go with something like a $200 DLink managed (or unmanaged) small business switch? Thanks so much!

• Go back to 32-bit Java in OS X so I can use Chrome

  Recently Apple released a Java update. I mindlessly downloaded and installed it, thinking it must be good (I know that was stupid on my part). Now chrome doesn't work where sites require Java support. In terminal, java -version shows I have the 64bit version installed. I know Chrome does not support 64bit Java. I'd like to go back to the last version that worked for me, the 32-bit version. I don't want to use Safari or Firefox. I'd like Chrome to work. I have too much invested in customizing it to work with another browser.

• Picking Core Language For Large Scale Web Platform

  Now I have work with PHP and ASP.NET quite a bit and also played around few other language for web development. I am now at a point where need to start building a backend platform that will have the ability to support a large set of applications and I am trying to figure out which language I want to choose as my core language. When I say core language I mean the language that the majority of the backend code is going to be in. This is not to say that other languages won't be used because my guess is that they will but I want a large majority of the code (90%-98%) to be in 1 language. While I see to benefit of using the language that is best for the job, having 15% in php, 15% in ASP.NET, 5% in perl, 10% in python, 15% in ruby, etc… seems like a very bad idea to me (not to mention integrating everything seamlessly would probably add a bit of overhead). If you were going to be building a large scale web platform that need to support multiple applications from scratch, what would you choose as your core language and why?

• Low Graphics and laggy screen after update to 13.10 from 13.04

  After updating from 13.04 to 13.10 many of 3D unity stuff has stopped working, I am suing Samsung Series 3 (NP350V5X) Laptop which has Switchable Intel and AMD Radeon HD 7670M GFX. xserver-xorg-video-ati does works but NO 3D support and graphics are very low. [I am currently using this] fglrx & fglrx-updates shows blank screen after Login. • Why such a dramatic difference in wireless router max. simultaneous connections?

  Recently, I've needed to look into buying a wireless router for a mission-critical system at work that will need to support quite a few simultaneous connections (potentially a few hundred laptops). One thing I've noticed is that there seems to be a dramatic difference between the max. simultaneous connections different routers can support; see this page for example - anything from 32 to 35,000! Why is there this degree of difference? You'd have thought that if we know how to make routers that can handle thousands of connections, we wouldn't be making stuff that's limited to a pathetic 32 anymore. Is it a firmware thing? A hardware thing? Are low-end manufacturers purposely putting low arbitrary connection limits in so people can be "encouraged" to pay more for high-end routers?

  At the NIST Cloud Computing Workshop this week; representatives from Canada, China, and Japan presented on their cloud computing efforts. Some interesting points made: Canada: Building "Service Canada" cloud for all citizen services, but raised the issue of data location...cloud data must be within Canada border, so they will not focus on public clouds where they don't know or can't control data location. Japan: In response to the massive destruction of the Great East Japan Earthquake, Japan is building nation-wide cloud services to support disaster relief, data recovery, and support for rebuilding new communities. US Ambassador Philip Verveer discussed the need for international cooperation and standards development to enable interoperability of cloud services, keeping in mind cultural and political differences. Additionally, an industry panel reported on cloud standards development, including some actual interoperability testing at http://www.cloudplugfest.org. Much of the first two days of the workshop covered progress and action plans around the 10 High-Priority Requirements to Further USG Agency Cloud Computing Adoption. • Business Forces: SOA Adoption

  The only constant in today’s business environment is change. Businesses that continuously foresee change and adapt quickly will gain market share and increased growth. In our ever growing global business environment change is driven by data in regards to collecting, maintaining, verifying and distributing data.  Companies today are made and broken over data. Would anyone still use Google if they did not have one of the most accurate search indexes on the internet? No, because their value is in their data and the quality of their data. Due to the increasing focus on data, companies have been adopting new methodologies for gaining more control over their data while attempting to reduce the costs of maintaining it. In addition, companies are also trying to reduce the time it takes to analyze data in regards to various market forces to foresee changes prior to them actually occurring.   Benefits of Adopting SOA Services can be maintained separately from other services and applications so that a change in one service will only affect itself and client services or applications. The advent of services allows for system functionality to be distributed across a network or multiple networks. The costs associated with maintain business functionality is much higher in standard application development over SOA due to the fact that one Services can be maintained and shared to other applications instead of multiple instances of business functionality being duplicated via hard coding in to several applications. When multiple applications use a single service for a specific business function then the all of the data being processed will be consistent in terms of quality and accuracy through the applications. Disadvantages of Adopting SOA Increased initial costs and timelines are associated with SOA due to the fact that services need to be created as well as applications need to be modified to call the services In order for an SOA project to be successful the project must obtain company and management support in order to gain the proper exposure, funding, and attention. • Most suited technology for browser games?

  I was thinking about making a 2D MMO which I would in the long run support on various plattforms like desktop, mac, browser, android and ios. The server will be c++/linux based and the first client would go in the browser. So I have done some research and found that webgl and flash 11 support hardware accelerated rendering, I saw some other things like normal HTML5 painting. So my question is, which technology should I use for such a project? My main goal would be that the users have a hassle free experience using what there hardware can give them with hardware acceleration. And the client should work on the most basic out-of-the-box pc's that any casual pc or mac user has. And another criteria would be that it should be developer friendly. I've messed with webgl abit for example and that would require writing a engine from scratch - which is acceptable but not preferred. Also, in case of non-actionscript, which kind language is most prefered in terms of speed and flexability. I'm not to fond of javascript due to the garbage collector but have learned to work around it. Thank you for you time.

• APC PHP cache size does not exceed 32MB, even though settings allow for more

  I am setting up APC (v 3.1.9) on a high-traffic WordPress installation on CentOS 6.0 64 bit. I have figured out many of the quirks with APC, but something is still not quite right. No matter what settings I change, APC never actually caches more than 32MB. I'm trying to bump it up to 256 MB. 32MB is a default amount for apc.shm_size, so I am wondering if it's stuck there somehow. I have run the following echo '2147483648' > /proc/sys/kernel/shmmax to increase my system's shared memory to 2G (half of my 4G box). Then ran ipcs -lm which returns ------ Shared Memory Limits -------- max number of segments = 4096 max seg size (kbytes) = 2097152 max total shared memory (kbytes) = 8388608 min seg size (bytes) = 1 Also made a change in /etc/sysctl.conf then ran sysctl -p to make the settings stick on the server. Rebooted, too, for good measure. See image http://i.stack.imgur.com/2bwMa.png You can see that the cache is trying to allocate 256MB, but the brown piece of the pie keeps getting recycled at 32MB. This is confirmed as refreshing the apc.php page shows cached file counts that move up and down (implying that the cache is not holding onto all of its files). Does anyone have an idea of how to get APC to use more than 32 MB for its cache size?? **Note that the identical behavior occurs for eaccelerator, xcache, and APC. • Network Printer Issue.

  Hello, I have a Windows-7 Desktop at office. There is a network printer Dell MFP2335dn which is installed on this dekstop. The printer worked fine for me(I could print from my desktop), sometime back but recently i am not been able to print. When i give a print job, it stays in the queue for a long time, nothing gets printed. When i see the status of the printer in "Devices and Printers", it says - Offline. I removed the printer installed on my Desktop, and tried to install the drivers downloaded from Dell website: http://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R241894&formatcnt=0&libid=0&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=349205 But still the same problem. I don't know what to do more to resolve this. Any pointers about how to resolve this error and get printing done. thanks, -AD.

• Web Filter For Multiple Networks

  I have been using a Barracuda web filter 310 in our network and I have just had enough of it. It does not support trunking and we have several networks that have users that need to be web filtered. (I guess if everyone just did their flippin jobs I would not have this issue) but the management wants me to get it resolved. Does anyone know the top five web filters that are better than the barracuda web filters that support network trunking so that I can have multiple domains and subnets going through it? • How to choose a server side language / framework

  I am trying to come up with a list / ranking system on determining which server language to choose for a particular website. Assume that familiarity with a certain language is not important and the implementation can be done in any language. Here are some things that might be important but I am not sure how to rank them : Maintainability. Libraries. For example, Memcached and NoSql support right out the box would be really nice addition to a particular framework. 3rd party SDK's. For example, if I need Paypal on my site they openly provide SDK's for all senarios in Java, PHP and .Net. If I choose Django I would have to rely on 3rd party libraries that are don't support everything and are not officially maintained. Would that be dealbreaker for Django? Performance This one is tricky to put on a generic list because it can be a deal breaker but for many websites performance will not be an issue that the language/framework is responsible for. Cost (hosting, open source). edit - Any reason for the votes to close? I didn't see any duplicates mentioned and the question should not drum up a flame war.

Some storage devices require specific firmware versions or settings to function properly with failover clusters. • How do I get the machine name from an IP via Multicast DNS?

  I have a list of IP addresses on a network, and most of them support multicast DNS. I'd like to be able to resolve the server name instead of just having the IP address. ping computer.local 64 bytes from 192.168.0.52: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=5.510 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.0.52: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=5.396 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.0.52: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=5.273 ms Works, but I'd like to be able to determine that name from the IP. Also the devices don't necessarily broadcast any services, but definitely do support mDNS broadcast. So looking through services won't work.

  I just bought this Ultrabook "Asus Taichi 21 DH71". This has Intel 3rd generation i7 processor and 4gb ram with 256 gb SSD. The main feature is that it is a hybrid machine. Naming it has dual screens. When the lid is closed it can be used as a tablet and when lid open it can be used as a notebook. This machine can also be used with the two screens on at the same time. I used ubuntu many years ago and loved it. But I never tried any linux later. My questions are Does the new version of Ubuntu support the Multitouch interface? Will it work specifically on this machine? Will Ubuntu support gestures on multi touchpad? Update 2/22/2013 I did try the latest 64bit Ubuntu(12.10) from live usb and noticed that it couldn't detect the tablet screen. Everything else worked seamlessly. Do you guys think the tablet screen would be detected if I make a complete installation on to the notebook? Please help guys..

• How can I configure the embedded wireless card in a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 to work under Lubuntu 10.10?

  I'm struggling to get the embedded wireless card in this laptop to work. In 7.10 (gutsy) it worked fine. Now I'm trying to get 10.10 (maverick) working on it, and am using the Lubuntu flavour due to the low resources of this laptop. The hardware: Appears to be an embedded pcmcia card. pccardctl ident gives: Socket 0: product info: "TOSHIBA", "Wireless LAN Card", "Version 01.01", "" manfid: 0x0156, 0x0002 function: 6 (network) The default kernel recognises the card and loads the orinoco_cs driver. orinoco_cs 0.0: Hardware identity 0005:0002:0001:0002 orinoco_cs 0.0: Station identity 001f:0001:0006:000e orinoco_cs 0.0: Firmware determined as Lucent/Agere 6.14 Then for some reason, the driver isn't happy with this and gives: orinoco_cs 0.0: Hardware identity 0005:0002:0001:0002 orinoco_cs 0.0: Station identity 001f:0002:0009:0030 orinoco_cs 0.0: Firmware determined as Lucent/Agere 9.48 All seems ok until I try to associate with my access point using Network Manager. eth1: Lucent/Agere firmware doesn't support manual roaming repeated about 10 times then NM gives up. According to the linuxwireless.org wiki page on this driver, this is a known issue, and I quote: Known issues Roaming and WPA_supplicant Lucent/Agere firmware doesn't support manual roaming On the Agere cards, roaming is controlled by the firmware instead of userspace. You will get the above message if userspace attempts to associate with a specific AP rather than by SSID. If you are using wpa_supplicant use ap_scan=2 mode. NetworkManager uses wpa_supplicant, so the above also applies. At this point my google-fu has failed me, and I can't find how to configure network manager to use the mystical "ap_scan=2" mode via wpa_supplicant. I have tried the following suggested solutions (from launchpad or the forums) deleting the agere* files from /lib/firmware using wicd instead of network manager combining both blacklisting the orinoco_cs driver in an attempt to force use of the hostap_cs driver instead (in case it is a prism2 card). Obviously none of them have worked for me. Any hints on how to perform the suggested workaround above? Edit: I have also confirmed working on 8.10 (intrepid) live CD.

• Remote Access using Windows 7 Home Premium

  I'm hoping to try and do some trans-atlantic tech support for my in-laws. Both my machine and theirs are running Windows 7 Home Premium. I read in this HowToGeek article that the Home editions of Windows 7 and Vista don't support remote access. What's the most straightforward way for me to access their machine - bearing in mind that they are a retired couple and this is their first computer and therefore anything that needs to happen at their end needs to be super simple. Free would be prefered but if there is a good paid for solution I'd consider it.
