• Website access per client and each client having multiple users Sample Application

  I'm interested in building a web application in .NET that is scalable to multiple Clients and each and every Client has users associated with them. Suppose that my website is xyz.com and I have 3 clients "abc", "klm", "pqr" and I want to give access to features of xyz.com under the link as follows www.xyz.com/abc www.xyz.com/klm www.xyz.com/pqr and Client abc has N users and I want to set 3 roles for every client's user role. Is there any sample application in .NET that support this kind of website access per client having multiple users? And If I use ASP.NET Membership will that be a suitable membership solution or Do I need to opt for any other type of Membership defined by my own or already available in open source market for .NET. Edit: All the clients will have same functionality. I would like to build a generic model for www.xyz.com/{whatever} so that in future if a new client want to register with me he/she just have to give client name and up on adding client name all the features avaiable to exising clients will be applicable.

• Seeking not working in HTML5 audio tag

  I have a lighttpd server running locally. If I load a static file on the server (through an html5 audio tag), it plays and seeks fine. However, seeking doesn't work when running a dev server (web.py/CherryPy) or if I return the bytes via a defined action url instead of as a static file. It won't load the duration either. According to the "HTTP byte range requests" section in this Opera Page it's something to do with support for byte range requests/partial content responses. The content is treated as streaming instead. What I don't understand is: If the browser has the whole file downloaded surely it can display the duration, and surely it can seek. What I need to do on the web server to enable byte range requests (for non-static urls). Any advice would be most gratefully received.

• Log Shipped but Won't Update

  I'm currently taking the MS SQL 2K5 Admin course at a local college and ran into a problem with the Log Shipping part. My setup is the following: Windows 7 x64 SQL 2005 SP3 2 SQL server instances on the same machine Log Shipping settings: Performed full then log back up of Primary Manually restore on Secondary in STANDBY MODE Insert a new record into the table Set up Log Shipping on Primary using SQL Authenication login to connect to the Secondary Set up timers and copy destination on Secondary Monitoring instance not being used I set up a shared folder for WORKGROUP so both instances on the machine can read & write to it. I can see transaction logs generated and copied as defined by the Transaction Shipping wizard. However, the specified table on the Secondary instance is not updating.

  If I create this collection: IEnumerable<_TITLE> _titles = null; How can I set the result set from Netflix in this expression: _titles = from t in Titles where t.Id == "ApUFq" select new {t, t.Cast} I am getting: Cannot implicitly convert type 'System.Linq.IQueryable' to 'System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable<_Title'. An explicit conversion exists (are you missing a cast?) I understand it's because I am using an anonymous type. _TITLE is a custom complex object I create that exposes a subset of Netflix properties. If I add "_TITLE" in front the of the "new" it says that my object does not implement IENUMBERABLE. If then _TITLE implements IENUMBERABLE, it says _TITLE does not contain a definition for ADD and still getting conversion error. Basically, I want to set the _TITLE properties with the data returned from Netflix. I have defined _TITLE to contain the fields I need, plus a collection of PERSON (for Cast).

• How can I clean up this SELECT query?

  I'm running PHP 5 and MySQL 5 on a dedicated server (Ubuntu Server 8.10) with full root access. I'm cleaning up some LAMP code I've inherited and I've a large number of SQL selects with this type of construct: SELECT ... FROM table WHERE LCASE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE( strSomeField, ' ', '-'), ',', ''), '/', '-'), '&', ''), '+', '') ) = $somevalue Ignoring the fact that the database should never have been constructed to require such a select in the first place, and the $somevalue field will need to be parameterised to plug the gaping security hole, what is my best option for fixing the WHERE condition into something less offensive? If I was using MSSQL or Oracle I'd simply put together a user-defined function, but my experience with MySQL is more limited and I've not constructed a UDF with it before, although I'm happy coding C. Update: For all those who've already raised their eyebrows at this in the original code, $somevalue is actually something like $GET['product']—there are a few variations on the theme. In this case the select is pulling the product back from the database by product name—after stripping out characters so it matches what could be previously passed as a URI parameter.

• Archiving Database Tables using Java

  My application demands archiving database tables between sybase and db2 and vice-a-versa and within(db2 to db2 and sybase to sybase) using java. I am trying to understand the best strategies around in terms performance, implementation, ease of use and scalability. Here is my current process - source and destination tables with the acceptable parameters (from java) are defined within xml. the application reads the source and destination configurations and execute them sequentially. destination is sometime optional when source is just deleting data from a specific table or when the source is just calling a stored procedure. dataset between source and destination is extremely large (in millions) From top of my head, it looks like I can define dependencies between multiple source and destination combination and have them execute in parallel in multiple treads. But will this improve any performance(i hope it will)? Are there any open-source frameworks for data archiving using java? Any other thoughts on the implements side will be really helpful. Thanks

  Hi, all my projects and their versions are defined in a properties file like this: ProjectNameA=0.0.1 ProjectNameB=1.4.2 I'd like to iterate over all projects and use there names and versions in an ant script. Right now, I read the entire properties file in help of the property task. Then I iterate over a given list in a for loop like this: <for list="ProjectNameA,ProjectNameB" param="project"> <sequential> <echo message="@{project} has version ${@{project}}" /> </sequential> </for> How can I avoid the duplication of the project names in the for loop. So basically iterate over each line and extract the name and the version of a project. Thanks.

• What should I do to recompile my static library (originally written in VS6) in visual studio 2008?

  There is a static library A with c++ classes wrapped by a C API in VS6. I developed a static library B in VS6 using callbacks from library A. The library B is used by the program C (commercial software) as a "user defined library" and linked to produce the program D. Questions: 1) When program C uses VS 6 it works, should it work fine with VS 2008? Because it doesn't. 2) When I tried to recompile library B in VS 2008 it gave me a .lib file with only 28KB, and the old one had more than 2MB. Is it ok? What Am I probably doing wrong? • Fastest way to find the rotation of a vector

  I have two 2D vectors, say u and v, defined by cartesian coordinates. Imagine that vectors are needles of a clock. I'm looking for the fastest way to find out, using python, if v is after or before u (or in other words find out in wich half plane is v, regarding to position of u). For the purpose of the problem if vectors are aligned answer should be before. It seems easy using some trigonometry, but I believe there should be a faster way using coordinates only.   What is the most efficient way to collect and report performance statistic analysis from an application? If I have an application that uses a series of network apis, and I want to report statistics at runtime, e.g. Method doA() was called 3 times and consumed on avg 500ms Method doB() was called 5 times and consumed on avg 1200ms etc Then, I thought of using a well defined data structure (of collection) that each thread updates per remote call, and this can be used for the report. But I think that it will make the performance worse, for the time spend for statistics collection. Am I correct? How would I procceed if I used a background thread for this, and the other threads that did the remote calls were unaware of this collection gathering? Thanks

• Visual-C++ Linker Error

  I have a class called MODEL in which public static int theMaxFrames resides. The class is defined in its own header file. theMaxFrames is accessed by a class within the MODEL class and by one function, void set_up(), which is also in the MODEL class. The Render.cpp source file contains a function which calls a function in the Direct3D.cpp source file which in turn calls the set_up() function through a MODEL object. This is the only connection between these two source files and theMaxFrames. Is there a solution to use this code as a color changer?

• In java can i have more than one class/object in a file?

  So the way i've been told to do things is you have your file and the file name is Classname.java and then the code is something like this: class ClassName { SOME METHODS main {} } and then thats all. I'd like to have two objects defined and used within the same .java file. (i don't want to have to put the other class in a difernt file just because i'd like to send this to someone and i want to avoid hasstle of atatching multiple files to an email [the lazy do make good programers though if you think about it]) is it possible to do this? do i have to do anything special and if so what? what are some mistakes i'm likely to make or that you have made in the past when doing this?

  I'm learning c++0x, at least the parts supported by the Visual C++ Express 2010 Beta. This is a question about style rather than how it works. Perhaps it's too early for style and good practice to have evolved yet for a standard that isn't even released yet... In c++0x you can define the return type of a method using - type at the end of the function instead of putting the type at the start. I believe this change in syntax is required due to lambdas and some use cases of the new decltype keyword, but you can use it anywhere as far as I know. // Old style int add1(int a, int b) { return a + b; } // New style return type auto add2(int a, int b) -> int { return a + b; } My question really then, is given that some functions will need to be defined in the new way is it considered good style to define all functions in this way for consistency? Or should I stick to only using it when necessary?

• How can I configure Xcode to put '{' where I want it in generated files

  I know this is a fairly contentious issue amongst programmers, but when developing I like my IDE to position the opening curly bracket underneath the method/interface/control declaration, for illustrative purposes: - This is how Xcode automatically generates skeleton methods with the { at the end: - -(void) isTrue:(BOOL)input { if(input) { return YES; } else { return NO; } } This is how I like to lay out my code (which I believe is called the Allman style): - -(void) isTrue:(BOOL)input { if(input) { return YES; } else { return NO; } } I'm just wondering if there's any configuration switch in Xcode to enable this style of development? It's really annoying when typing out if/else statements as it tends to auto-complete the else clause with the { at the end of the line which just looks silly if you like developing with them underneath. Or am I being unreasonable? Is Objective-C supposed to adhere to a standard defined by Apple?

• Attaching a function to the parent window from an iframe and getting proper scope

  I working on adding file uploading to my web application. I'm using an iframe to post my upload. When my php script processes the upload it writes some JavaScript to the iframe. This JavaScript is attempting to attach a function to the parent, this works, but when this function actually gets called it doesn't have the correct scope. Here is the code I'm attaching to the parent window: parent.window.showPreview = function(coords) { if (parseInt(coords.w) > 0) { var rx = 200 / coords.w; var ry = 250 / coords.h; $('#preview').css({ width: Math.round(rx * 400) + 'px', height: Math.round(ry * 533) + 'px', marginLeft: '-' + Math.round(rx * coords.x) + 'px', marginTop: '-' + Math.round(ry * coords.y) + 'px' }); } } When this function gets executed I get an error that says $ is not defined. I've tried adding changing the JQuery call to parent.$('#preview').css..., but then it says that parent is undefined. Any ideas?

• Background image fixed with vertical scroll bar in IE

  I have a gradient background image in my web application, it goes from dark at the top to light at the bottom. In Firefox, this image is handled properly, where upon scrolling vertically downwards on the page, the dark top section disappears. However, when I started testing in IE (I'm using IE8) the background image stays fixed behind the screen as you vertically scroll, meaning the dark top section of the background image is always rendered at the top of the IE view. I've set the background tag to have scroll defined, which from all I can tell should solve the problem, but IE is not happy. background: #470077 url( images/abcd.jpg ) repeat-x scroll; I made sure to be clearing the data in IE in case it was caching the old style before I added scroll.   I would like to set a default value in a has_many through association. Lets say I have three models: People Friends Dogs A person can request that a dog becomes their friend. So a person would create an association where friends has an active column = false. User has_many :friends has_many :dogs, :through => :friends Now when I assign a dog to a user User.find(1).dogs << dog The friends table has null in the active column. My friends model is defined as Friend def initialize(args = {}) super(args) active = false end yet this does not work because the friend object is never created. Do I have to manually create one?

• Dismissing the keyboard in a UIScrollView

  Alright, I have a couple of UITextFields and UITextViews inside a UIScrollView, and I'd like to set the keyboard to disappear whenever the scrollview is touched or scrolled (except when you touch down inside the text field/view, of course). My current attempt at doing this is replacing the UIScrollView with a subclass, and setting it to call a removeKeyboard function (defined inside the main view controller) inside the touchesBegan method. However, this only removes the keyboard for a normal touch, not when the view is simply scrolled. So, what's the best way to remove the keyboard inside a UIScrollView? • CSS problem on HTTPS pages (IE8 toolbar BHO)

  I am developing an IE8 toolbar in C#. The toolbar has a button which when clicked adds some user defined content to the page. I am using a BHO to add the required HTML, CSS & JS to the page. Things are fine with "http" pages. But, when a "https" page is loaded, user keeps getting the IE warning "Do you want to view only the webpage content that was delivered securely?....". I traced the problem to some css rules, where I am using local png files which are already installed on the user's machine. Is there any way by which I can access the png files on the local machine without getting the IE8 warning?

• How do I write a spec for a Rails route that does redirecting?

  I am using Omniauth in my Rails project, and I'll like to hide "/auth/facebook" behind a "/login" route. In fact, I wrote a route: match "/login", :to => redirect("/auth/facebook"), :as => :login and this actually works, i.e. a link to login_path will redirect to /auth/facebook. However, how can I write a (rspec) spec to test this route (specifically, the "redirect" option)? Do note that /login is not an actual action nor method defined in application. Thanks in advance!
