  • Real-time aggregation of files from multiple machines to one

    I need a tool which gets a list of machine names and file wildcards. Then it connects to all these machines (SSH) and begins to monitor changes (appendings to the end) in each file matched by wildcards. New lines in each such file are saved to the local machine to the file with the same name. (This is a task of real-time log files collecting.) I could use ssh + tail -f, of course, but it is not very robust: if a monitoring process dies and then restarts, some data from remote files may be lost (because tail -f does not save the position at which it is finished before). I may write this tool manually, but before - I'd like to know if such tool already exists or not.

  • Synchronising scripts / db / files from dev system to web server

    I work as a freelance web dev, and up until now have been ftping my scripts / databases / static files to my web server manually, but I'm finding that is too error prone. So I'm looking for an app to automate uploading new and updated scripts / files / databases / etc. I know a lot of independent devs use WinSCP or Unison, but I don't think those apps can synch databases. Does anyone have any other suggestions? It doesn't need to be anything overly feature rich as I'm not working within a team or across multiple operating systems or anything like that. I can purchase any reasonably priced license if necesary. My work is primarily for PHP / MySQL / Apache on a Windows system, and then uploaded to a Linux / Apache server. thanks for your time!

    I have a default properties file, and some deployment specific properties files that override certain settings from the default, based on deployment environment. I would like my Ant build script to merge the two properties files (overwriting default values with deployment specific values), and then output the resulting properties to a new file.   • Effective methods for reading and writing large files in C

    I'm writing an application that deals with very large user-generated input files. The program will copy about 95 percent of the file, effectively duplicating it and switching a few words and values in the copy, and then appending the copy (in chunks) to the original file, such that each block (consisting of between 10 and 50 lines) in the original is followed by the copied and modified block, and then the next original block, and so on. The user-generated input conforms to a certain format, and it is highly unlikely that any line in the original file is longer than 100 characters long. Which would be the better approach? a) To use one file pointer and use variables that hold the current position of how much has been read and where to write to, seeking the file pointer back and forth to read and write; or b) To use multiple file pointers, one for reading and one for writing. I am mostly concerned with the efficiency of the program, as the input files will reach up to 25,000 lines, each about 50 characters long. Thanks!

    Hey, imagine a plain webapp with a log4j.properties which is under version control. I can't add it to svn:ignore because its a mandatory file. If i make custom changes for development and i don't want to commit them, i have to watch out for accidently commits. For one file it's easy to handle, with 3 or more files it becomes creepy. Is there a way to disable these files temporary from svn commit? So its easiert to commit? I'm working with svn and subclipse.

  • Is there a limit for the number of files in a directory on an SD card?

    I have a project written for Android devices. It generates a large number of files, each day. These are all text files and images. The app uses a database to reference these files. The app is supposed to clear up these files after a little use (perhaps after a few days), but this process may or may not be working. This is not the subject of this question. Due to a historic accident, the organization of the files are somewhat naive: everything is in the same directory; a .hidden directory which contains a zero byte .nomedia file to prevent the MediaScanner indexing it. Today, I am seeing an error reported: java.io.IOException: Cannot create: /sdcard/.hidden/file-4200.html at java.io.File.createNewFile(File.java:1263) Regarding the sdcard, I see it has plenty of storage left, but counting $ cd /Volumes/NO_NAME/.hidden $ ls | wc -w 9058 Deleting a number of files seems to have allowed the file creation for today to proceed. Regrettably, I did not try touching a new file to try and reproduce the error on a commandline; I also deleted several hundred files rather than a handful. However, my question is: are there hard limits on filesize or number of files in a directory? am I even on the right track here? Nota Bene: The SD card is as-is - i.e. I haven't formatted it, so I would guess it would be a FAT-* format. The FAT-32 format has hard limits of filesize of 2GB (well above the filesizes I am dealing with) and a limit of number of files in the root directory. I am definitely not writing files in the root directory.

The part I would like to overwrite in Ep: from the start to a line which is exactly Format: Layer, Start, End, Style, Name, MarginL, MarginR, MarginV, Effect, Text. I'm not so sure how may I do it.     When using the programmers text editor vi, I'll often using a wildcard search to be lazy about the file I want to edit vi ThisIsAReallLongFi*.txt When this matches a single file it works great. However, if it matches multiple files vi does something weird. First, it opens the first file for editing Second, when I :wq out of the file, I get a message the bottom of the terminal that looks like this E173: 4 more files to edit Hit ENTER or type command to continue When I hit enter, it returns me to edit mode in the file I was just in. The behavior I'd expect here would be that vi would move on to the next file to edit. So, What's the logic behind vi's behavior here Is there a way to move on and edit the next file that's been matched? And yes, I know about tab completion, this question is based on curiosity and wanting to understand the shell better.

Currently Java util logging do have the support of rotation based on file size by using File Handler. And other questions are , is there way we can configure 2 different files for a single handler say FileHandler say for eg , we would like some kind of messages need to be captured in one file and other messages in other file. Would appreciate for any comments.

    The problem is there is a folder ./log/ containing the files like: jan2010.xml, feb2010.xml, mar2010.xml, jan2009.xml, feb2009.xml, mar2009.xml ... each xml file would like: <root><record name="bob" spend="20"></record>...(more records)</root> I want to write a piece of ColdFusion code (log.cfm) that simply parsing those xml files. For the front end I would let user to choose a year, then the click submit button. All the content in that year will be show up in separate table by month. I have backed up the database. I have issued: BACKUP LOG MasterScratchPad WITH TRUNCATE_ONLY. I have run multiple DBCC SHRINKFILE commands on both of the LOG files. How can I accomplish this goal of having just one .LDF? I cannot find anything on how to delete the one with fileid of 3 and/or how to consolidate multiple files into one log file.

    I have a ASP .NET load balanced application (webservice and website). It runs on SQL server. I need to be able to provide large files for download. However, because of the load balancing situation, the files are stored in the SQL database as opposed to the file system. BITS seems to be the best approach. I have full control of the client. However, i don't know how to configure BITS to read the file from the database. I know how to write the C# code for that, but i don't know how to get BITS to hook into it as opposed to reading the file from the file system. Any ideas?

  • WiX, how to prevent files from uninstalling though we forgot to set Permanent="yes"

    We have a product installer created with Wix, containing a program package ("V1") and some configuration files. Now, we are going to make a major upgrade with a new product code, where the old version of the product is uninstalled and "V2" is installed. What we want is to save one of the configuration files from uninstalling, since it is needed for the V2, too. Unfortunately, we forgot to set the Permanent="yes" option when we delivered V1 (read this question for more information). Here comes the question: is there an easy way of preventing the uninstall of the file anyhow? Of course, we could add a custom action to the script to backup the file before uninstallation, and another custom action to restore it afterwards, but IMHO that seems to be overkill for this task, and might interfere with other parts of the MSI registration process.

    I have a project called WebResources where I have all the JS files that I intend to use in 2 other projects (all three projects sit in the same solution). I just spent 2 hours playing around with the file paths and VS just doesn't see the JS file (unless I specify the full path with the drive letter). Is there a trick to including javascript files relatively from other projects? My file structure is something like: Project1 Default.aspx Project2 WebResourcesProject /js testToInclude.js No matter how I try to include testToInclude.js inside Default.aspx, VS doesn't see it. Any ideas?

    I have an IIS web site. This web site contains other web sites so the structure is like this. \ MainWebSite\ App1\ App2\ All sites are Asp.net MVC Webapplications. In the MasterPage of App1, I reference the script files like this: <script type="text/javascript" src="../../Scripts/jquery-ui-1.8.custom.min.js"> </script> The Problem is that he now tries to find the File at http:\server\MainWebSite\Scripts.... how can i work around that? Should I put all my Scripts and CSS files into the root directory, is that a preferred solution?
