• Raid1+0: create stripe over two /dev/mdx on partition or not?

  Given that I haven't found a way to define how a Raid10 is created with mdadm, i went the Raid1+0 solution. How to display/define Mirror/Stripping pairs with mdadm mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdf1 mdadm --create /dev/md1 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdg1 /dev/sdh1 mdadm --create /dev/md10 --level=0 --raid-devices=2 /dev/md0 /dev/md1 My question is about the stripe. For the mirror I create a primary partition over the full HD and set partition type to FD. So, should I do the same for the Stripe? Create partition on /dev/md0 and /dev/md1 (primary over full 'HDD', set partition type correctly) and then do the stripe on the partition? Is there a correct way here or are there any advantages/disadvantages to a solution? Thank you

• Change ISP and MX static ip but no mail

  We have recently changed our ISP, I have changed the MX record for our domain name to point to the new external static IP address for the router on the new ISP's connexion but I am not getting any mail (though sending works). Do I just have to wait will the change propagates? I am slightly concerned because I can connect to the web email service made visible through the new router, but not actually receive email. Have I missed something?

• games and movies become too slow after some time

  On my gaming desktop, I was fixing my desktop's power supply when something seemed to burn (I got that stinging burning smell). However when I turned ON the computer (it was OFF before), everything seemed to be fine. However, I have noticed that now it becomes too slow if I play a game or movie on it. I am talking about the computer becoming painfully slow after about 5 minutes into the movie/game (it works fine otherwise e.g. browsing), it becomes so slow I can see individual frames from movies/games. What could be the problem? A fried video card? friend memory (RAM), something else? • Raspberry Pi based Hadoop cluster

  Is it at least possible to build Hadoop cluster from Raspberry Pi-based nodes? Can such a cluster meet hardware requirements of Hadoop? And if so, how much Raspberry Pi nodes are required to meet requirements? I understand that a cluster from several Raspberry Pi nodes being cheap is not powerful. My purpose is to organize cluster without possibility of loosing personal data from my desktop or notebook, and to use this cluster studying Hadoop. I'd appreciate if you suggest any better ideas of organizing a cheap Hadoop cluster for studying purposes. UPD: I've seen that recommended amount of memory for Hadoop is 16-24GB, multi-core processors, and 1TB of HDD, but it doesn't look like minimal requirements.

• Dell Inspiron 530 - SSD Worth it?

  I'm going to be upgrading my Dell Inspiron 530 (2.0 Ghz Intel Dual Core CPU, 3 GB RAM) to windows 7 soon, and rather than backup and reformat my existing drive, I'm planning on getting a 2nd drive to replace my current primary, and moving it to a secondary. Thus, this seems like an excellent time to get a solid-state drive, if its going to be worth it. As far as I can tell this machine has a SATA-I controller, and I'm unsure if I'll see a noticeable performance increase with an SSD without going to SATA-II. So I have a three part question here given all that: Will spending the money on a SSD be worth it if hook it into a SATA-I controller? Is it reasonable to upgrade the controller on this machine to a SATA-II controller? Given that this PC is kind of old to begin with, am I better off performance wise to just stick with a faster HDD?

  There are some exe and dll files belonging to some programs on my laptop which communicate with the internet without my permission (for self-update generally). I want to prevent those files one by one from accessing the internet. I don't want to install any external firewalls. I'm using Windows 7 Home Pro and if this can be done by Windows Firewall, it's OK. I took a look at Windows Firewall but couldn't find a setting to disable file access.

• Exchange Not Delivering Email

  I'm having an issue where my Exchange Edge Transport server receives mail (found in logs) and then it vanishes, never ending up in the users mailbox, I have a edge subscription setup between it and the main Exchange server, how can I go about tracing the message to figure out what is broken? I also have found records of the message in the logs on the main Exchange server. Thanks a ton for any help Edit: If I change port 25 on my main router to point to the main exchange server as opposed to the Edge Transport, email comes through fine form external domains and delivered in the correct mailbox

• Linux virtual disk stripping or multi-path samba share?

  I am trying to build a file storage box for media. It needs to span two or more directories or partitions as one share. There are a few solutions but reasons why I want to avoid them, among these are: Using LVM2 for stripping. I don't really have the resources to back up everything on the volumes incase one HDD goes south. I would end up loosing everything. Maybe there is a better option for this to prevent data loss with hot swappable drives or some kind of raid. Using symbolic links in the share. This will get tedious every time a new sub-directory is added. Is there some kind of software raid I can use to merge two directories virtually? I am aware of the issue where /dev/hda1/media/file.1 and /dev/hdb1/media/file.1 both exist. But I'm sure there are some creative solutions for this.

  I am using a pre-made social networking script where all user uploads go to site.com/public/user/ How can I make /public/user/ my secondary hard drive so all user uploads are uploaded to my second harddrive and not the primary hard drive. • How to meet Windows 8 upgrade's 20 GB requirement on a 40 GB SSD with a 22 GB Windows 7 install?

  A PC I have has Windows 7 installed on a 40 GB SSD, and I bought a Windows 8 upgrade for it. The current Windows folder on it however is 22 GB, that's after removing hibernation, turning off the pagefile and removing all extra programs/features. So even if I purge every other file and folder, the Windows folder itself takes more than half the disk. The PC also has a 1 TB HDD, but the upgrade installer didn't give me any options about choosing another drive. So, is my only option to reinstall Windows 7 on a larger drive, then proceed with the Windows 8 upgrade? Or is there anything I can remove from the Windows folder that while might be dangerous for long term usage, is fine for the few minutes I need to get Windows 8 installing?

  I wrote the following command in windows XP's command shell and something strange happened: C:\Folder1> copy sample.txt : Because of my typing mistake, I wrote ":" instead of "D:" ... but it copied the sample.txt to somewhere I cant find! I searched my whole HDD for sample.txt but the only instance of this file is the original one which is in C:\Folder1. Do you know where ":" path actually is in Win-XP command shell? You might say ":" is current path and the file has been copied onto itself but look at this: If you run that command for the first time, this will be the result: 1 file copied. but the next time you run that command it will ask you: overwrite sample.txt? (yes/no/all) So if it were writing the file onto itself, both results would have to be the same but they aren't. Thanks in advance for your help.

• Windows 7 System Image Restore to SSD - SSD not detected?

  I recently bought a new SSD (OCZ Vertex 2 120GB) as a replacement for my laptop HDD . I created a System Image on an external drive using the Win 7 backup and restore tool and then restored this image to the SSD using the Win 7 disk. AHCI is enabled in Win 7 and the BIOS, but it seems that windows is not detecting the disk as an SSD because, in the defragger, the disk is still available for defragging. Prefetch and Superfetch were also still enabled. I have manually disabled scheduled defragging, prefetch and superfetch. I have also checked that TRIM is enabled using: fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify and the result is '0' (it is). Performance seems ok, but not quite as fast as I expected. Was restoring from a win7 generated system image a mistake? Am I getting optimal SSD performance?

• Asus Z8NA-D6, not powering up/no signal for monitor

  I have a Asus Z8NA-D6 motherboard. Been running fine so far with one E5504 Xeon processor. I have added another Xeon E5504 CPU to the second slot and it will not power up (or there is no signal to the monitor). The status lights turn on as normal. no error led. Nothing happens other then the leds start and both cpus/fans power up. HDD power up. I tried clearing CMOS. (2 4gb modules) when addin one more to the second cpu it still boots but bios only see the 2 blocks at cpu 1)

I have created a separate vlan and configured the proxy but not sure how i can route all traffic through this. • Windows 7 startup problem

  I purchased a computer a few weeks ago which runs on Windows 7. I was just watching a show on Hulu when it shut off. I don't know if I accidently pushed the power button with the keyboard or what. When I turned it back on my first screen says F5 key for HDD recovery. I pressed the F5 button and the screen goes to a Windows setup (EMS enabled) screen which then goes to my regular Starting Windows. After that one I get the box with x:/windows/system32/cmd.exe-startnent.cmd. If I don't press the F5 button I go to a screen which tells me Windows failed to start, a recent hardware or software change might be the cause. It gives me two options- Launch Setup REpair(recommended) or start Windows normally. I've pressed enter to choose the first choice but it does nothing but brings me to the same screen. Anyone have any ideas?

  We have a Dell 2950 with PERC and 14 external SAS 15K 73GB drives. An Oracle database job takes 3 hours to run with the drives set as hardware RAID 10 (striped across 7 mirrored pairs). The same job with the drives in RAID 1 takes only 1 hour. OS is Win 2008 R2 I think. Before we change the RAID level (with considerable downtime) on the production box, does anyone know why we're seeing this odd result, and if there's a better way to fix it?

  I'm having to handle several VPS/services and I always set passwords to be different and random. What kind of storage do you suggest to keep these passwords safe and let me access them easily? These passwords are used for services like databases, webserver user and so on that run customers' services, so it's really important to keep them in a safe place and strong. I'm actually storing them in a google drive spreadsheet file, describing user, password, role, service. Do you know of better solutions?   I have TimeMachine enabled for my external HDD. I'm triggering backups manually 2 times per week. I have noticed, that some snapshots, that i made, are gone. I noticed this behaviour several weeks later, but i had doubts. To make it sure, i've recorded screen video with listing snapshots in TimeMachine.   After being disappointed with Ubuntu's release update feature, I finally decided to have separate mount points for / and /home. Towards this, I reformatted my HDD giving most of my drive to sda1(meant to be /home) and allocated about 40GB to rootfs (/). Unfortunately, I would also like to have a /projects which is to be located on sda1. Currently, sda1 is being mounted as /dev/sda1 on /home type ext4 (rw) I've tried looking online for a solution to this problem..however, I'm not sure as to what to look for! Is it possible to mount the 'home' directory of sda1 as /home and 'projects' directory of sda1 as /projects?

• How do I recover JPEGs with no file size?

  I downloaded some wedding photos into my external drive about a month ago. A total of 3 cards were downloaded into 3 different files. The first file lists all of the photos, about 600 images, but they have zero bytes. The other 2 files are fine. I can't recover the compact flash card because I have used it too many times since then. Is there any way to recover the images on my drive?
