• Windows 8 taking 4+ mins to shutdown

  I did a fresh installation of Windows 8 64 bit, build 9200 (released on aug 16th). I installed the drivers and some basic softwares like NetBeans, mingw, iis server and php. For the first few times, it was restarting normally. But then at shutdown, it would show the shutdown screen for some seconds and then turn black for about 4 mins (similar to what happens at hibernation). I disabled the "fast startup" option in power options, but the problem still persists. Windows 7 and Ubuntu shut down normally. specs: 4gb ram, 750 gb sata hdd, solved by installing Windows Updates released during October. It was a serious bug in the OS, afaik. Now even hibernate takes upto 30 secs max. Still, win 8 is too buggy for release.

• SSD on Vmware ESXI 4 (TRIM? Good Idea?)

  Hi, I just posted about finding bottle necks and have narrowed it down to having way too many VMs on my machine on one 15K SAS drive. I have plenty of cores and plenty of ram. So I am planning on putting 6 VMs on one drive (so 5 drives for 30 VMs). I am thinking of using a 60GB Vertex 2 SSD. Each of my VMs will only need about 6GB of HDD space so this isn't a big deal. My questions are: does ESXI support Trim and do I really need it if I leave 25% of the drive as free space? If I need it should I get a diff drive that handles garbage collection differently? I have a RAID controller w/ write caching. I will still benefit from this? Will this effect my setup differently? Is there anything I need to consider regarding SSD's in virtualized environments. • Installing Solaris 10 on sunT5220 - ZFS/UFS raid 10?

  I am in a bit of a time crunch, and need to get two T5220's built. We were very happy to see two boxes in our aged inventory which had 8 HDD's each, but didn't think to check if they were running hardware RAID or not. Turns out that they aren't. When we install, we are given the option to use UFS or ZFS, but when we select a place to install we're only given the option of installing on one single disk. Is it possible to create a software raid 10 across all of the disks and install the OS on that? Sorry if any lingo is wrong, I'm not really a Sun guy and our guru is out of town right now. Any help would be really appreciated! Note: Most of the guides I've found on google entail installing the OS on a single disk, and then creating a separate RAID 10 on other disks. We would actually like the OS to reside on the RAID 10. Hope that clarifies things.

• Directory backed up with rsync is much bigger than source

  We backup a set of virtual machines to an external USB drive using rsync -a. The source directory is 145G as reported by du -sh, but the target is reporting 181G. The two file systems are ext3 and the block size is the same, so can someone explain what the discrepancy is?

• Why does a hard disk suddenly look to Windows as if it "needs to be formatted"?

  This is more of a theory question, but what are the reason(s) for a disk to suddenly cause Windows to start saying it "needs to be formatted"? It happens to an IDE disk that I have in a cheap external enclosure, and I can usually get most of the data back by using software like recuva. It's now happened to an internal disk I have. I'm not looking for software to fix this (although links would be appreciated), but rather a low-level explanation as to what gets corrupted on the disk.

• VLC Dynamic Range compression multiple songs

  In my collection of music I have some songs which seem to be compressed nicely. But in addition to those I have songs which are overly quite compared to the louder compressed songs. So maybe the problem isn't compression but average volume. Would the Dynamic Range Compressor in VLC work for this type of problem or would I have better luck using external speakers and running it through a guitar compressor?

• Sudden slow read & write speed on all IO

  I have a custom built rig that has 2 storage drives. for OS: Western Digital 1.0TB HARD DR 64MB for other stuff: Corsair Performance 3 128GB (SSD) [ expected read speed: 400 mb/s ] The system was incredibly fast for a couple of months, then one day i was playing a game then it started to get buggy (some sounds and objects disappearing), i stopped the game and the system seemed to be unstable so i had to shut it down, next morning i couldn't start it up, it was saying something about corrupt device. I formatted both disks and installed a fresh copy of windows, all i can say that since that day the system was never like before, it takes 10 minutes to boot up (the icons and desktop slowly appear). but once it's done the slowness isn't as noticeable. Here's my benchmark on the HDD ( read speed - write speed ): And the SSD: Anyone knows what could be the issue?

• Recover a Parallel Desktop 3 virtual machine in VirtualBox

  I have an old HDD image file that was used with Parallels Desktop 3. Ideally I'd like to use it in VirtualBox (conversion). In all the tutorials I found (like this one or that one) the VM must be started: there's the problem. I don't have the machine where Parallel 3 was installed anymore. I tried installing the trial version of the last version of Parallels (9) but it seem it doesn't offer the possibility to import an old VM. So here's the question: Given I can't boot the VM with Parallels Desktop, is there a way to convert the image file to another format that is bootable in VirtualBox? If it changes anything, the host is MacOS X 10.9, the guest is Windows XP.

• Different versions of 2.5" drives? Unscreawing Intel 320 for slimmer drive to fit newer thinkpads?

  My x60s laptops come with about 1-2mm heigher 2.5" HDD than newer x220 models. This is totally stupid when one would like to reuse the old drive in the newer laptops. I bought newer 2.5" 320 Intel SSDs and they seem to have such 1-2mm gap to unscrew but I am unsure whether it is meant for opening. Could someone instruct what to do here? Look the manufacturer has started changing the old good 2.5" drives into slightly different versions, now it means slow compability issues to fix or totally new 2.5" drives. Ideas how to proceed? Unscrewing newer 320 drives or are some other versions of 2.5" drives meant for x220? Does there exist some sort of racks to get drives working between different comps? Perhaps booting from laplink is currently the easiest solution to get things working when changing harddrives between comps? • Why would you use IPv6 internally?

  Of course, I realize the need to go to IPv6 out on the open Internet since we are running out of addresses, but I really don't understand why there is any need to use it on an internal network. I have done zero with IPv6, so I also wonder: Won't modern firewalls do NAT between internal IPv4 addresses, and external IPv6 addresses? I was just wondering since I have seen so many people struggling with IPv6 questions here, and wonder why bother?

  I'm using KeePass (on Windows 7) for storing passwords. The application is running on my laptop almost 100% of the time, but I'm using it rarely. The problem is, that activating the window after long time takes huge amount of time, I'd say that OS realized the application is no longer used and swapped it. I don't want OS to swap my KeePass (because of the loading lag, and also because of security - I don't like the idea of password keeping program's memory to be stored anywhere on HDD). Is there any possibility how to tell OS not to swap some program? Or, is this achievable by some programming?

• Compiling PHP with cURL and SSL support on Redhat EC5

  I don't even know where to begin to be honest. Trying to use an external API that requires SSL connections, I discover that SSL in needed on cURL, but this (apparently) requires PHP to be reinstalled and compiled with cURL / SSL support. Not really experienced with compiling PHP, and I'm not sure if our server even has make or build, the only luck I've had is with rpm's before. This really isn't in my job description. Any help most most welcome!

Now i realize i cannot search through the drive. after setting 'everyone' permission to read i could again. How do i set it so everyone does not have read permission except for my username (i hate clicking yes to admin prompt everytime i move a file) and allow the system to search the drive when users are allowed to access those files?

• Vista is showing contents of flash drive that was previously connected

  Today, after I clicked "folder X" in my external hard drive, instead of seeing the contents of "folder X", I see the contents of my flash drive (the last time it was connected)...which is not connected to my computer. My flash drive's files show for a couple of seconds before I am brought to "folder X" which was the folder I wanted to go to as mentioned in the beginning of this post. Any idea why this happened?   Hello, I have purchased a dedicated server from a reputable Hosting company. They only have Windows Server 2008 OS installed on it and NO Sql server. Server Configuration is Intel Dual core Processor with 2GB of RAM and 100GB HDD. I wanted to host my web services on that server which will be using the MS SQL Server 2005 at the backend.There are multiple web services and each using a different Database. Microsoft has CAL basis Licensing , Which I understand is based on number of users accessing the database directly ( I may be wrong ) . But my users will be accessing the webservice and no direct connection to the database as such. Yes but the number of users accessing the web server cannot be known and is not under my control. Which Licensing is best suited for this kind of setup ? I don't need analysing and BI services right now ,but i may want to upgrade that in future may be. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

• Mysterious "media" volume mounted on desktop Mac OS X

  I have a mysterious volume mounted on my desktop that I can't seem to forcibly unmount. I've tried using umount and also diskutil, but it seems to automatically remount itself. I've copied my hdd with Time Machine, and copied it onto a new computer, and it also has the drive mounted on it. It's not pointing to anything and I can't open it, nor can I forcibily remove it by hand with rm -Rf. Any ideas? I noticed this problem after I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion. It causes problems because when I try to select a file using the built in Finder dialog box, it freezes for a few minutes because it tries to cache or read into the "media" mounted volume.

• formating a hard drive for use in an asus aspire one d250

  I have an Asus Aspire One D250 that's out of warranty and whose hard drive is giving the click of death. I'm trying to use a spare SATA HDD I have but am having some difficulty. I have a USB CD drive that I plugged into the computer but when I tried to boot off of a Windows XP SP3 install CD the hard drive wasn't recognized. I tried to format the hard drive in another computer and then plug the hard drive into the Asus Aspire and although this gets me to the Windows XP loading screen it crashes before it gets into Windows, itself. Even in Safe Mode. I also tried to install Windows XP off of a USB stick but it seemed to hang during the install process. As in the next day it was still in the blue screen installer. Any ideas?

  I've got a server that receives around a million unique visitors a month and I've recently began using Plesk to help monitor some of the vitals on the box itself. RAM I can make sense of, but I'm not really sure if my CPU usage is too high, low, or about average for this number of visitors. The server exists solely to serve up a somewhat hefty WordPress blog. • Troubleshooting Cpanel Email delays

  I am running cpanel cPanel 11.25.0 on CentOS and have intermittment email delays (both coming and going) for a few specific domains. Emails from this server as well as major providers such as gmail, etc., do not suffer these delays. Any help with troubleshooting this issue? I am well aware this could be caused by something external but at this point getting someone else to fix this issue is out of the question.
