• "Adding Printer" dialog asks for root password?

  I try to setup my printer under Ubuntu. So far it worked that i succeed to install the drivers. But Ubuntu says: No driver available for this model. This is the problem that Ubuntu doesn't recognize the right model, so i have to add and the choose the right driver manually. No problem i thought. But when i try to add a printer, i'm prompted to provide a root password althought i didn't setup one? So i'mnot able to confirm the dialog and add my printer, what's the reason?

• Good analytics tools that can track visitor actions from a particular source?

  Are there good tools that can track what actions a certain subset of visitors (i.e. from a particular source) do once they're on your site? As far as I know (which could be wrong), Google Analytics can't do this beyond telling you how long they stayed, bounce rate, and average number of pages. I'm looking for something that can tell me which links they clicked on, and if possible break it down per-visitor. Free solutions would be great, but I'm anticipating that this would require a paid solution.

  I'm new to PHP in a professional context. I want a few macro thumb rules to keep me on the enlightened path. Here are a few I'm proposing to myself: no absolute paths in include|require(_once)? statements no .. dirname(foo), or other means of walking up in include|require(_once)? statements put libs on the include path, not in subdirectories You can see that all of this is focusing on managing dependencies, because that is the problem I've encountered thus far. What other thumb-rule solutions to macro level problems do you have?

• Cannot add folders to Ubuntu One

  I have signed up with Ubuntu One (20GB) and I'm having the following issue: I basically cannot add folders through the panel interface. I have been able to add five folders so far, but I'd like to add some more (yes, they are inside the home folder). I don't get no errors, but nothing is added to the folders list. By using the command line interface like this u1sdtool --create-folder /home/alex/Web it basically hangs. Nothing happens. If I then list the folders with command line, my folder is not there. Any idea? (I'm on 12.10)

• PCI configuration method error (Linux Kernel)

  (I'm not sure if here is the best place for that question, so I will be pleased if anyone suggests me a more proper forum for that.) I'm trying to install Ubuntu 12.04.4 in a netbook (from an usb), but the kernel stops very early in initialization process. After two days of research, I've found that it boots with the parameter pci=conf2 but not with the default conf1 method. Nevertheless, after kernel boot, it seems that Ubuntu can't find usb devices and I'm not be able to install it. Trying with Debian, its a graphic installer and I found that the mouse isn't working neither.I think pci devices are not working. I tried about 50% of kernel pci boot options in the kernel-parameters file (in conjunction with the implicit default conf1) without luck. Any suggestions? PS: The problem is the same with kernel 2.6 or 3. (In Spanish) No estoy seguro si éste es el mejor lugar para esta pregunta, por lo cual estaré encantado si alguno me sugiere un mejor lugar para ella. Estoy intentando instalar Ubuntu 12.04.4 en una netbook (desde un usb), pero el kernel se detiene muy temprano en la inicialización. Después de dos días de investigar, encontré que arranca con el parámetro pci=conf2 pero no con método default conf1. Sin embargo después de que el kernel arranca, parece que Ubuntu no logra encontrar los dispositivos usb y no puedo instalar el sistema.   I'd like to figure all the possible ways SRP helps us reduce coupling. Thus far I can think of three: 1) If class A has more than one responsibility, these responsibilities become coupled and as such changes to one of these responsibilities may require changes to other of A's responsibilities. 2) Related functionality usually needs to be changed for the same reason and by grouping it togerther in a single class, the changes can be made in as few places as possible ( at best changes only need be made to the class which groups together these functionalities) 3) Assuming class A performs two tasks ( thus may change for two reasons ), then number of classes utilising A will be greater than if A performed just a single task ( reason being that some classes will need A to perform first task, other will need A for second task, and still others will utilise it for both tasks ).This also means that when A breaks, the number of classes ( utilising A ) being impaired will be greater than if A performed just a single task. Can SRP also help reduce coupling in any other way, not described above? Thank you

  When somebody did mention "PSY" during a dinner at OOW this year with customers and colleagues from Korea I was completely clueless. I even didn't understand correctly who or what "PSY" is. I did forget about that until last week as a German online magazine did report on over 500 mio youtube hits for "Gangnam Style". Well ... I didn't know that I've almost missed a global phenomenon. And now I've learned that the song is omnipresent in Korea (and not only here) - and Gangnam is a really nice (and expensive) quarter of Seoul not that far away from my hotel. And if you need some rest during your lunch break you may watch these youtube vids - but don't blame me if you don't get the song out of your head anymore ... Gangnam Style by PSY Eton Style - my personal favorite Jakarta Flash Mob - wow! And NO - that's not the type of music I'd usually listen to!!!

• How do I count Internal Logical Files (ILF) and External Inputs (EI) for a dynamic form entry page?

  Assuming I have an applicant information entry screen, the number and types of fields on which can be defined by the system administrator, how do I go about counting the number of Internal Logical Files (ILFs) and Data Element Types (DETs) for the related data functions? So far I have come up with something like this: ILF #1 (control information): Field Metadata, 1 RET, ~3 DET (name, type, mandatory) ILF #2 (business data): Applicant Data, most likely 1 RET, but how many DET? Of course I could count it as 2 DET (Field ref, Value), but I am not sure that would be correct And when it comes to an External Input (EI), say, "Add New Applicant", things become even more complicated, because the number of DET corresponding to the user-editable fields is totally dependent on the control information in ILF #1, and I am out of ideas here... Anyone fancy to help with that? Thanks in advance!

• Error after installing Lubuntu 14.04 through liveUSB

  A friend asked me to install ubuntu on his toshiba NB 200 netbook to replace windows xp. I formatted the flash drive, ran an nb5sum check on the iso and after running netbootin , I checked the drive for errors. No problems so far. During the installation, while everything seemed normal, the installation regularly paused until I pressed a button or moved the mouse. After restarting, it doesn't boot and it starts a shell showing : "General error mounting filesystems A maintenance shell will now be started CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and reboot the system " Any ideas? Any help is appreciated!

• Handling (many) multiple projects in Git in an enterprise environment

  One of the advantages of older version control systems such as CVS and SVN in enterprise development is that anyone can connect to source control and see all the projects that the company has. This can make it easier to get a high level view of what kid of development is happening outside your sprint and also keeps everything in one place and easy to find. However, distributed version control systems (Git, specifically) use the repository as their base unit. They work best with one project (or several closely related projects) per repository. This makes repository management more difficult in most enterprise environments where it is not unusual to have more than 25-50 projects to support. As far as I have been able to determine, you have to keep a list somewhere else of all the repos you have. There is software available, like GitHub, that help, but that still is an extra step beyond a single connection string and listing the contents of the repository. What is the best way to deal with the complexity of multiple repositories?

We have decided to keep the advertising in house, with the goal being of keeping the costs down. I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice on potential advertising routes that we could take. For example B2B affiliate networks, adwords etc. We are in the position of launching an empty site and ideally we would like to be attracting recruitment agencies or businesses to signup to either a free or paid account. • Physics don't apply on a unique body AndEngine

  I am developing a game in AndEngine so far I managed to create everything I wanted for my sprite that was connected to a BoxBody. I was rotating it moving it everything was great. I wanted my collision detection to be more precise so I changed from boxBody to unique irregular shaped body. I found all the vertices and I just replaced the newly created irregular shaped body with the boxbody everywhere in my code. Not only that the image of the sprite is not in place but all the physics and maths I was doing for movement and physics wont work. Please help me :(. Thanks in advance.

• Where would you start if you were trying to solve this PDF classification problem?

  We are crawling and downloading lots of companies' PDFs and trying to pick out the ones that are Annual Reports. Such reports can be downloaded from most companies' investor-relations pages. The PDFs are scanned and the database is populated with, among other things, the: Title Contents (full text) Page count Word count Orientation First line Using this data we are checking for the obvious phrases such as: Annual report Financial statement Quarterly report Interim report Then recording the frequency of these phrases and others. So far we have around 350,000 PDFs to scan and a training set of 4,000 documents that have been manually classified as either a report or not. We are experimenting with a number of different approaches including Bayesian classifiers and weighting the different factors available. We are building the classifier in Ruby. My question is: if you were thinking about this problem, where would you start?

• Why is the font spacing on some websites broken?

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 on a Dell Studio 15 and so far am really impressed. I could not find a solution for my problem by googling. The fonts on some websites do not have proper spacing. they overlap and are very hard to read that way. I am using the Ubuntu standard fonts and have not changed them after installing. • 11.04 Wireless is disabled by hardware switch Hp Compaq nc6220

  Here is some backstory if it is helpful: I had Windows Vista on my computer and I wanted to use wubi to install Ubuntu, everything was fine until I booted into the OS. It said my wireless was disabled by a Hardware Switch. So I booted back into Vista and it disabled there too. I have gotten rid of vista and installed 11.04 instead. It still has this error and as far as I know there is no switch anywhere and the fn keys do nothing.   How will I know when my company is ready to receive an investment? I am starting a company and have bootstrapped it so far. I have produced four versions of the demo. The first fully-working version is underway. Getting this to a beta phase product will require capital, which requires an investment, which requires an investor, which requires I stop working on the product and go out and talk to people about it. The last time I raised money from investors, it took a while but I was successful. I don't want it to take a while. I want it to be brain dead simple for an investor to understand the value so that I can optimize the time I spend with the product. Is my logic flawed? What is the best way to approach raising money, while limiting both my time and risk? Thanks.

• Free serif font with clearly distinguishable 0 (zero) character

  I'm using gLabels to create some small pieces of paper to give away to people - Just two lines of about 15-20 characters each. One of the important parts of the design is that there are no "o" ("oh") characters, but there are "0" ("zero") characters in an all-lowercase URL. Therefore I need a non-monospaced (and very legible in print) font where "0" cannot be confused with "o" even without reference. The closest thing I've found so far is Andale Mono and Inconsolata , but they are both monospace, and as such not very easy to read in print. Alternatively, to find a font myself, is there some way to preview all fonts in the Ubuntu repositories without installing them?

• Calendar icon in unity shows wrong date

  There is a column of icons in unity on the far left and one of them has the number "31" in big numerals. If you mouse over it it says "Google Calendar" and if you click on it you get google calendar which of course shows the correct date. Today is November 3. Shouldn't it say "3" instead? If I type "date" from the command line I get Sun Nov 3 21:19:37 GMT 2013 I see this was fixed for Chrome at least in 2011 http://gmailblog.blogspot.co.uk/2011/04/5-years-of-google-calendar-and-new.html .

• Webmail with option to change password for email account?

  Been testing out different webmail options to use (so far AfterLogic, Horde) And it seems that there is no options to change password for user. It's really bad thing that i have to go to server and manually change passwords for users. Is there any webmail solution that will allow me to change password, that also changes on server (as client). Or is it server setting i must use before? Or it is not possible? EDIT: Note that i have cPanel host.

• Dell L501X Display Port Screen issue

  I got a Dell XPS L501X with a mini display port to VGA connector for my External Screen. On Displays it shows me: Acer Technologies 24" (which is the monitor) but only lets me up to 1024x768 resolution (The native resolution of this monitor is 1920x1200). I tried adding a new mode with xrandr, but when I applied it, it reverted back to 1024x768. As far as I know, the display port is controlled by the Intel card, right? • Problem with Arcam rpac and Ubuntu 12.04

  I have recently (?mistakenly) purchased an Arcam rpac USB DAC for my Ubuntu (12.04) PC. I have torn out all but 3 of my hairs trying to get this to work and have had absolutely no luck so far. I can see the Arcam USB audio device when i run aplay -l, however I cannot see it listed under the Sound settings. I can see the soundcard device when running alsamixer also, but if I try and select it, alsamixer crashes, stating "cannot load mixer controls: Invalid argument". Any ideas how to get this working (if it's even possible)? Does anyone else out there have the rpac with ubuntu? Thank you! Aman

  I managed to get as far as optirun glxgear, which worked perfectly, but I am unable to define settings for a specific shell script. In its wiki it says this: optirun [options] <application> [application-parameters] and I don't know what option has to be nor the application-parameter. (I'm really new) If my file is /home/hon/hon.sh, how can I execute it via terminal? If I just type optirun hon or optirun hon.sh it shows this error: /usr/bin/vglrun: 296: exec: hon: not found there I try to find the file /usr/bin/vglrun. How can I run the shell scripts I need to run?

• How to draw unlimited FPS on Mac OS X with OpenGL?

  I d'like to draw as many frames as possible with OpenGL on Mac OS X to measure the performance on different scenes. What I've tried so far: Using a CVDisplayLink that has NSOpenGLCPSwapInterval set to 0, so it does not sync with the Display. But with that it's still stuck at max 60FPS Using normal -drawRect: with a timer that fires 1/1000sec and calls -setNeedsDisplay: Still not more than 60FPS Same as 2. but I call -display in the timer callback. With that I get the FPS above 60, but it still stops at 100-110 FPS. Although the frame rate should easily be at 10times more. Andy idea how I can really draw as many frames as possible?

• Game Server on Windows Azure

  What do you guys think of using Windows Azure for deploying a custom built game server. It's being built in C#, and I want to get a few things down before stretching too far into the project. I like the idea of being scalable, but I also know that I will never get to the scale of anything to the scale of WOW, or something quite as big. It will just be an interesting journey to test something like this. So, will Windows Azure work for that, or is there any other services that can provide something like that?
