• XNA - positioning after rotation

  I have a turret with a 2 gunbarrels. The turret rotates towards my mouse. So far no problem. When it creates a few bullets and positions them at the end of the gun barrels. Here is the problem. It only works the moment the gun is point upwards. The moment it rotates the end of the gun barrels have moved ofcourse, thus the bullets don't spawn at the end of the gun battels, but at the place the where the gun barrels are when the turret is pointing upwards. How can I check where the end of the gun barrels are the moment it rotates? Thanks in Advance, Mark Dijkema PS. • Database for Ubuntu

  I am trying Ubuntu 12.04 booted from a DVD disk before I install it. I currently havwe windows 8 (which I hate) and I have a couple of Data base programs with my movies, hundreds of movies, in them. Is there a database available for Ubuntu that is compatible with Microsoft Database? There are too much data in the current database file for me to have to rewrite the program. So far, I love the Ubuntu 12.04. I have been able to access my microsoft works spreadsheet files and documents with no problem. And I like the thuderbird email and just about everything else about Ubuntu 12.04. I just need to be able to access my database files and to write lables and envelopes. Thanks. Toby J Paris, TN

• Is there a language offering LISP-like macros with a more complex syntax?

  LISP's macros are extremely powerful constructs, and the inability to introspect and modify the program itself beyond the method signature level has always struck me as a limitation. Yet I favour "complex" syntax because it tends to be closer to natural language. So far I have failed to find a language which combines a powerful macro mechanism such as LISP's with a naturally looking syntax (1). Is anyone aware of such a language? Footnote: I would consider python to have a naturally looking syntax as it allows constructs like this: if 0 < a < 5 and b in list. The avoidance of braces to structure blocks is irrelevant in this case, though.

• Upgrade to Precise leaving system unbootable

  I've upgraded our server's system from Lucid to Precise and as far as I can tell, it left the system in an un-bootable state. I've read many responses in different threads but my problem has a twist. When we boot the server, it says The disc drive for / is not ready yet or not present Continue to wait; or press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery but when I press any of those buttons, it doesn't do anything. I can't boot to any recovery console, and as it is a server and I'm accessing it via iDRAC, there's not much I can do.

• How do I create tileable solid noise for map generation?

  Hey guys, I'm trying to figure out how to generate tileable fractals in code (for game maps, but that's irrelevant) I've been trying to modify the Solid Noise plug-in shipped with GIMP (with my extremely limited understanding of how the code works) but I cant get mine to work correctly. My modified code so far (Java) GIMP's solid noise module that I'm basing my code off of (C) Here is what I'm trying to achieve but This is what I'm getting So if anybody can see what I've done wrong, or has a suggestion how I could go about doing it differently, I'd greatly appreciate it. • How would you approach developers you don't already know as a developer to offer them a position? [closed]

  We've been trying to find a second developer for the company and have posted job ads online but so far there have been no developers that have been interested, and only a single one that has some experience in Python (that failed a fairly basic practical). It seems like the it's really difficult to find decent people here in Singapore, even reasonable juniors that you can teach. I'm contemplating whether I should go reach out directly to people on Stack Overflow and github and in the hopes that they are interested. I'm thinking I would message the person with only a few sentences, stating the they seems capable from their online presence and that I'd like to work with them. Is this kosher? I know I dislike recruiters and unsolicited mail just as much as the next guy.

• What's the maximum filename length in encrypted ext4 partition?

  I'm using a two-partition setup with ubuntu (one partition for the system, one for my home directories). Until now I had an ext3 formatted home partition, which I'm currently trying to migrate to an encrypted ext4 partition. However, when copying the files the system is bugging me with errors, complaining that filenames are too long. As far as I could find out using wikipedia filename length is 255 bytes for ext3 and 256 bytes for ext4. So where's the problem, and how can I solve it? Thanks!

• SEO: Is promoting your backlinks a good strategy for improving search results for my site's name?

  I run a website that's been around for about three years in the sports space. I am successfully ranking well for targeted keywords, but searching for the name of my site itself returns very poor results - it shows my site, its FB/Twitter, and then 15 pages of unrelated spam that happen to contain two words that, when combined, form my website's name. After that, my backlinks begin to show up spordically. As far as I can tell, I simply don't have enough backlinks and the backlinks I do have are ranked worse than the spam. (Site Explorer lists 200 external links to any page on our domain and 20 external links directly to the front page). To counter this, my strategy is to promote my backlinks so they get a better page rank than the spam. Does that make sense? Am I going in the right direction or should I just focus on getting more backlinks pointing directly to my site?   I'm looking for a media manager that will display and play movies and TV shows and will read data included in mp4 and m4v files. So far I've looked at XBMC, Moovida and Boxee and all of these seem to keep their own separate database or XML files for reading and storing tag information. I also looked at Banshee because of this answer, but it didn't read my tags. Banshee is also geared towards music videos instead of actual movies and TV shows. So I'm looking for software that Displays and plays movies and TV Shows Reads mp4 and m4v tags Preferably something with bulk import (i.e., I don't want to add 1,000 items to a new library) Bonus if it also has a tag editor Bonus if it's an XBMC extension

• Assemble static site from templates? (don't want to reinvent the wheel)

  I have a site that is 100% static content (no php, just some javascript). There's several "blocks" like the header, menu, footer, etc. that are the same on each page. Rather than do a lot of copy/pasting, I was thinking of some kind of template system where I could run a CLI command (in php, perl, python, shell, whatever) and have it replace all the block tags with the actual block text. I did see some answers in this question, but those seem oriented towards "we provide the style and layout, you provide the text". In my case, I have everything as far as layout, css, etc. - just want to do a glorified sed. Before I invent the wheel, I was wondering if there was a tool out there already.

  I've often seen such comments be used: function foo() { ... } // foo while (...) { ... } // while if (...) { ... } // if and sometimes even as far as if (condition) { ... } // if (condition) I've never understood this practice and thus never applied it. If your code is so long that you need to know what this ending } is then perhaps you should consider splitting it up into separate functions. Also, most developers tools are able to jump to the matching bracket. And finally the last is, for me, a clear violation to the DRY principle; if you change the condition you would have to remember to change the comment as well (or else it could get messy for the maintainer, or even for you). So why do people use this? Should we use it, or is it bad practice?

The VPS uses Debian 6 LNMP setup and the DNS is being taken care by another service. Currently the VPS is running non multi site WordPress with -+ 83 MB RAM out of 128MB. As far as I know the performance is relative to the number of request, not the number of sites in the multi site setup. The question How do I calculate maximum number of request in with that setup?   I have been working with a nice Gent but I am getting stuck. I am just getting back in to Linux and Ubuntu was recommended. I like the look so far but the wireless isn't working I run the update and when it says complete it hangs at the end. Please let me know what to do at this point. • How do I make a PPT file as small as possible?

  Currently I am agonizing over several large presentation files, which I happened to reprint to PDFs... One thing I wondered: Do PPT's (from Microsoft Powerpoint) always to have to be that big? And what would be the strategies to make a PPT smaller? (If we say "ceterus paribus" at e.g. 25 slides and assuming that one isn't allowed to use a cloud-based service like GDocs, rocketslide or Prezio.) Of course there are the obvious "bad guys": Images and graphics. But: How about roll-over animations etc, who knows how much space they take? How about "smart arts"? Could one save file size if one would use "Open Office" or "Libre Office" Impress? (I didn't try it yet.) And "what if": What if we need to include e.g. five images (or charts that can't be remade in Excel in time), how would we best reduce the file size impact of those five images, if we needed to? I ask all this from an honest "business" perspective. I am no nerd or "Microsoft MVP" and I don't intend on delving into LATeX or similar yet. But that doesn't mean that I am not curious and very willing to learn. I am basically interested in (proven) best practices. Yes I know this question is lacking "initial research", but I think the perspective of my question is interesting and unique to a lot of people and if we intend to make SE a "Q&A" / Wiki kind-of reference site, this question might be a good way to "collect" advice on a question that has a very defined goal: Minimum file-size.

• Is there an effective way to test XSL transforms/BizTalk maps?

  Creating repeatable tests for BizTalk maps is frustrating. I can't find a way to handle testing them like I'd do unit testing, because I can't find ways to break them into logical chunks. They tend to be one big monolithic unit, and any change has the potential to ripple through the map and break a lot of unit tests. Even if I could break it up, creating XML test inputs is painful and error prone. Is there any effective way of testing these? I'd settle for recommendations for testing XSL transforms in general, but I specifically mention BizTalk maps primarily for the reason that when using the mapper, there really isn't any way to break your XSLT into templates (which I'd imagine you could use to break up your logic into testable chunks, but I've honestly never gotten that far with XSLT).

• Rendering a frame is producing noise from speakers in Windows and Linux

  When any hardware accelerated application is rendering a frame (or many of them) a very short noise is coming from my speakers. This can be a game, a WebGL application or XBMC. When the application/game is rendering many frames per second (like most of them do) the noise is a continuous buzzing that gets higher pitched with higher framerates. This applies to Linux and Windows, so I'd assume it's a hardware problem. The current hardware in the PC is: CPU: Core2Quad Q9550 GPU: Radeon HD 5770 RAM: 2x2GB DDR2 Motherboard: Asus P5QLD PRO PSU: be quiet! Pure Power 530W Screen and speakers: Old 720p LCD TV connected via VGA and aux cable Muting the TV stops the noise, muting Windows doesn't. I tried replacing the PSU first (used a Tagan 700W PSU before) because I thought it was a power problem. It wasn't. I tried replacing the motherboard (used a ASUS P5B SE before) next because I thought it was a sound card problem. It wasn't. I tried the GPU in a different PC because I thought it was a broken graphics card. It worked perfectly fine in the other PC. I thought it might be interference, but moving the audio cable around changes absolutely nothing. I tried using an HDMI cable instead and that did work, but is not an option since my TV has only one HDMI input and I need that for my PS3.

  I have a method for drawing strings in 3D that does the following: Set a render target Draw each character as a quadrangle using a orthographic projection to the render target Unset the render target Draw the render target texture using a perspective projection and a world transform My problem is how to deal with strings whose characters length exceeds that of the render target dimensions? For example if I have string "This is a reallllllllllly long string" and the render target can't accommodate it, it will only capture "This is a realllll". The render target (and its size) could be set each frame but wouldn't that be far too costly?

• Does it make sense to use jQuery in modern-webkit-only web applications?

  I'm lately working on a few mobile web apps for Android (2.3+) and iOS (4+). Their browsers support most of ECMAScript5, which is very powerful, and I wanted to use language features where possible, resorting to jQuery only when I had to. Turns out the only thing I use jQuery for is to have a shorter alternative for document.querySelectorAll. Might as well get rid of it. If I only have to support modern WebKit browsers, is it a good idea to get rid of jQuery (and other general-purpose libraries)? They are a layer of indirection, after all. (The apps don't have to make AJAX calls so far, I guess that's one thing that's going to get ugly. But is it worth keeping jQuery just for that?)

• Server asks for username and password on boot

  I installed the Ubuntu server 12.04 easily, however, when I boot it asks for a username and password. I don't know my previous username or password from Windows XP. I am currently trying to install any version of Ubuntu I have in my arsenal to recover the PC, but all intents so far have failed. They worked on other computers but not on this one, the error I get is No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found! I have tried all the solutions found on this site but to no avail. I don't have a Windows Ultimate boot disk and I'm out of CDs to burn. I can, however, make live USBs. Any Suggestions?

  This is the first time I installed ubuntu. I first installed 11.04 then upgraded. When I installed 11.04, the wireless card was detected and the driver was installed instantly.   As far as I understand it, it is possible to opt-out (in the UK at least) of having your address details displayed on who-is information of a domain for non-trading individuals. What I want to know is, after opt-out, how do individuals combat archived data? Is there any enforcement of this? How many who-is websites are there which archive data and what rights do we have to force them to remove that data without paying absurd fees? In the case of capitulating to these scoundrels, what point is it in paying for the removal of archived data if that data can presumably resurface on another who-is repository? In other words, what strategy is one supposed to take, besides being wiser after the fact?
