• VS2010 patce: why it's take so muce time to install it?

  Visual Studio 2010 RC has a few of patches release. For more information about them take a look here. What I'm expect from patch program, is to replace a few dll's of the program to a new fixed version of them. But when I run each of this 3 patches, they take a lot of time (5 minutes each), and you think that the program was frozen because the progress bar stay on the begging. This is question may not be so important, but it really interesting me to know, why this happens? It's really confusing to see that each VS2010 (or Microsoft in general) is frozen to 4-5 minutes.

I have a .NET and ASP.NET background and I am familiar with the MVC design pattern. I would prefer to start with a framework that makes logical design easier but does not generate all the code for you. I have read some like the Zend framework for this. Opinions?

• Trying to build automatic audio-conferencing capability into a WebApp

  Hey all, I'm working with a team of relatively novice programmers, and we are trying to create a site that will have audio-conferencing capabilities such that whenever someone visits the page, they will immediately have audio-conferencing capabilities with everyone else on the page (5 people max). Can anyone point us in a general direction? Should we be looking into building a custom app, leveraging audio conferencing software, or trying to mimic a webex program? Would Adobe Stratus be useful in getting this kind of functionality? Does anyone have any ideas about how we would design something like this on a macro level?   My company is about to hire .NET developers. We work on a variety of .NET platforms: ASP.NET, Compact Framework, Windowsforms, Web Services. I'd like to compile a list/catalog of good questions, a kind of minimum standard to see if the applicants are experienced. So, my question is: What questions do you think should a good .NET programmer be able to respond? I'd also see it as a checklist for myself, in order to see where my own deficits are (there are many...). *UPDATE: It want to make clear that we're not testing only for .NET knowledge, and that problem solving capabilities and general programming skills are even more important to us.

  Take the following code snippet class Missile: instances = [] def __init__(self): Missile.instances.append(self) Now take the code: class Hero(): ... def fire(self): Missile() When the hero fires, a missile needs to be created and appended to the main list. Thus the hero object needs to reference the list when it fires. Here are a few solutions, although I'm sure there are others: Make the list a global, Use a class variable (as above), or Have the hero object hold a reference to the list. I didn't post this on gamedev because my question is actually more general: Is the previous code considered okay? Given a situation like this, is there a more Pythonic solution?

• Variable 'app' in url-pattern for servlet mapping

  I'm learning Spring MVC (and servlets in general) and following springsource's mvc-ajax example, which uses annotated controller methods. It appears that there is only one url-pattern (in web.xml) mapped to a servlet in that example: /app/* I've deployed the app as a WAR file, and the actual, ugly URL I'm requesting is http://127.0.0.1:8080/org.springframework.samples.mvc.ajax-1.0.0-20100407.233245-1/account. So, it appears that 'app' in '/app/*' is a variable corresponding to 'org.springframework.samples.mvc.ajax-1.0.0-20100407.233245-1', however, it isn't universal because it isn't usable in my own app, and it contradicts my understanding that url-pattern contains the portion of the URL after the app name. So, what is 'app'? Where is it configured?

• TDD and UML together

  Hello, I'm new to TDD approach so I'm wondering if anyone experienced wit this could enlighten me a little. I would like to get some leads how to use UML and TDD methodology together. I've been used to: Design with UML -- Generate skeleton classes (and then keep it synchronized) - Implement and finally Test. I must admit that testing part was the worst one, so I started to look for something else - TDD. So I have some general knowledge what is it about but before I proceed further, I am interested knowing how it goes together with software design especially UML. So when I first design/create test, how can UML fit in? Would it be possible to design classes first, from them create skeleton classes, from them generate Unit tests which would be "filled" before actual implementation of UML pregenerated classes, would this approach break whole TDD? Or is there any other way that would keep UML and TDD together? Thanks everyone for answer.

  Tycho is supposed to be a plug-in for maven for building eclipse plug-ins. I have found various blogs and other articles about it, but the contained links to Tycho are all dead or not accessible for the general public, for example: http://www.sonatype.com/people/2009/04/tycho-040-roadmap/ The only thing I found is a project proposal on the eclipse site, but it doesn't reference any downloads: http://www.eclipse.org/proposals/tycho/ I found a svn repository, but it seems to be extremely dated: http://svn.codehaus.org/m2eclipse/tycho/trunk/ So my question is: where do I get tycho from? Or is it dead and I should stop bothering? I doubt it's dead, since I found out there is a talk about it on JAX2010 ...

Maybe I could invalidate each time the Parent in the OnPaint, but if this is not a good solution if the parent has a time consuming repaint logic or I have a lot of my custom component moving at the same time. How do I properly repaint the component?

It's critical to ensure that no user has access to another user's data. What are some approaches for implementing security at the database level and/or in the application architecture to to accomplish this? For example (and this is totally made up - I'm not suggesting it's a good or bad approach) including a userID column in all data tables might be an approach. • Power Law distribution for a given exponent in C# using MathNet

  Hello! I am currently working on a project where I need to generate multiple values (floats or doubles preferably) that follow a power law distribution with a given exponent! I was advised to use the MathNet.Iridium library to help me. The problem I have is that the documentation is not as explicit as it should be if there is any! I see multiple distributions that fit the general idea of the power law distribution but I cannot pinpoint a good distribution to use with a certain exponent as a parameter. Does anybody have more experience in that matter and could give me some hints or advice?

  Is it possible (and if so, safe) to create/use a block which takes a double pointer as an argument? For instance: - (void)methodWithBlock:(void (^)(NSError **error))block; Additional context, research, and questions: I'm using ARC. When I declare the method above and attempt to call it, XCode autocompletes my method invocation as follows: [self methodWithBlock:^(NSError *__autoreleasing *error) {}]; What does __autoreleasing mean here and why is it being added? I presume it has something to do with ARC. If this is possible and safe, can the pointer still be dereferenced in the block as it would be anywhere else? In general, what are the important differences between doing what I'm describing, and simply passing a double pointer as a method parameter (e.g. - (void)methodWithDoublePointer:(NSError **)error;)? What special considerations, if any, should be taken into account (again assuming this is possible at all)?

• Adding AllowPartiallyTrustedCallersAttribute To Paypal ASP.NET SDK

  Currently, I cannot use Paypal Pro on my host (GoDaddy) because it requires Full trust level. After digging in Google, it seems a workaround is possible by adding AllowPartiallyTrustedCallersAttribute to the Paypal assembly. I have seen code samples that use AllowPartiallyTrustedCallersAttribute in their AssemblyInfo.cs file, however, I've yet to run into a code example that also happens to be using PayPal. My question is where should the AllowPartiallyTrustedCallersAttribute be added in my project if my objective is to make the PayPal assembly work? I have tried adding it to my AssemblyInfo.cs for the project that contains the entire website, but I have not been successful. At this point, any insight or shot in the dark would be greatly appreciated. Even if someone could point me in the general direction of some documentation I would be grateful.   Hi, First off I should say that I don't have any experience in working with a CMS. I have 2 general questions about CMS: How easy is it to create a template? I have strong CSS/XHTML skills, is creating a template as easy as writing the markup or does it have to be done in a very rigid way? How is jQuery support in CMS systems? I like what you can do with jQuery and would like to incorporate it into the next couple of sites that I will do. EDIT: So far answers are asking which CMS, I don't have any in mind.   Hi, I am new to javascript. I wrote the following function rollDice() to produce 5 random numbers and display them. I use an anchor with click event to call the function. Problem is, in Chrome it won't display, works fine in IE, in firefox the 5 values display and then the original page w/anchor appears! I am suspicious that my script tag is too general but I am really lost. • Windows XP Home Edition SP3 cant recognise PCMIA SD Card

  System Specifications: Laptop : Dell Inspiron 6000 OS: Windows Home Edition SP3 SD Adapter: Hagiwara Smart Media Adapter I inserted the card into the slot, windows xp recognises the device, lists the pcmia controller on the device manager list, an entry appears under the IDE ATA/ATAPI category on the device manager as well. However, the device does not show under my computer and the driver does not get assigned a letter number. I checked the system logs from the device manager and there were no logged errors. Checking the Hagiwara support website, the manufacturer indicates that the adapter driver is the same as the windows xp pcmia controller. Checking Dell's website, no specific drivers were listed for that either. General Search on the web indicates that multiple people face similar problems with their SD cards, yet none actually spell out the route issue that causes this. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for further debugging. Thanks in advance

• Curious to Know what Eclipse 'Show Heap Status' does

  Hi All In Eclipse (I am using 3.4 Ganymede) there is an option under Preferences>General>Show Heap Status which when checked shows near bottom of IDE like 46M of 98M and if we move the mouse over 'Recycle Bin' it says 'Run Garbage Collector'. I am curoius to know how this works.What will happen when 'Run Garbage Collector' is clicked. My enivroment set up is something like jdk6 is insatlled and IDE used for development and run in Tomcat server. So my understanding is all the objects which are run through Tomcat should be garbage collected. Is this correct. Is there a way to see what objects Eclipse identified as Garbage Cheers

  I'm migrating a ~15GB database from SQL Server 2005 to a new server running SQL Server 2008, and along with that I need to create all the new Maintenance Plans. I can take care of all the backup stuff, but the table maintenance baffles me some. Does anyone have any input on how often I should (or how often you do would suffice too) the following tasks? Check Database Integrity Rebuild Indexes Reorganize Indexes Update Statistics Shrink Database? Am I missing anything? Again if you can share how often you do these tasks that would be great...and/or share any general information about your approach to table maintenance that would be helpful. Lastly does it matter what order I run these tasks in (when setting up a job)?

• Intercept and ignore keyboard event in Windows 7 32bit

  Hi all, My hardware has a problem, from time to time it's sending a "keydown" followed by a "keyup" of event: keydown: None LButton, OemClear 255 keyup: None LButton, OemClear 255 keydown: None LButton, OemClear 255 keyup: None LButton, OemClear 255 It goes like this forever, in Windows. In general it doesn't affect most of the applications, because this key is not printable. I think it's a special function key, like a media key or something. It doesn't do anything. But, in some applications that LISTEN to keydown and keyup, I get undesire and unexpected behaviour. Is there a way to intercept these 2 events in Windows (for all applications, for Windows itself) and make the OS ignore them? This is really important to me, if you can think of any solution, I'd be forever thankful.
