• .htaccess rewrite for all but domain itself to a subdirectory

  Hi, There exists a blog at domain.com I wish to do a 301 redirect on anything that is after domain.com/[category/[post-name] to domain.com/blog/[category]/[post-name] The key here is when someone hits domain.com they just stay there. Only if there's any reference to posts within domain.com that I wish for the redirect to work. Will hold this for at most 6 months, until SEO settles, and then remove the redirect. What is the best way of achieving this with .htaccess ? • Google Analytics--My second profile to an existing domain not tracking

  Hey Guys, I created a second profile to my Analytics account to track SEO keywords. This is a second profile for my existing working domain. It has been 4 days and I still do not see any traffic on this secondary profile. The profile shows a Staus of "Unknown". But I do not see a way to validate it like you have to when you create your first profile and this should not be necessary for a profile to my existing domain. Any ideas what I am missing? Thanks!

Also this table for each url contains metadata, that i need to extract. The main problem is that full url on site looks like 'mysyte.com/?id=2&region=0&page=1', and i just need to ignore everething, except url in table: I mean: 'mysyte.com/?id=2' = is a part of 'mysyte.com/?id=2&region=0&page=1'

  few month ago i write something to get the latitude or longitude from google API. latter i get the database from drupal for latitude or longitude to most of city in worlds. but the problem is that the same city name can be found two or more times in a area. like Firozabad in India and bangladesh both.   I did some stuff to have to_param return a perma-url so I'd have seo friendly links. Upon creation and update it will generate and return the perma-url in a to_param method that I put in the model. However this causing me some grief in other areas. I have a form that looks like this: <% @apps.each do |app| %> <% fields_for "[id][]", app do |fields| %> .... this fails terribly since it tries to insert the perma-url in place of the id. If I could just restrict to_param by action, that could solve things. If I change app to app.id, that fails since I have stuff like this: fields.check_box :is_featured . I suppose I could get the app instance, but that feels hacky. Again please excuse my lack of rails-foo ;)

  Left to right, Col1 id 560px wide with 10 px padding, middle column, 250px wide with 5px padding and Col3 (siderbar) is 200px wide with 3px padding. Background coloR, no matter text length in any column should stretch vertically equal. No javascript (jQuery workarounds) to make it work. It needs to be pure Semantic Markup with CSS. Each Column should have a nested column of color were content will go. Column 1 should be SEO prominant which means the highest nested column for Google and other Search Engines to crawl. I have used 'The Holy Grail" layout, articles at "A List Apart" and these solution are so convoluted that they push the main columns left and than the nested columns push them with padding back right. This is crazy! I try to adjust these examples, but they're not editable by just adjusting a width in the CSS or the padding, etc. Can you please help me?

  I have a simple SEO task. There's a City model and a Brand model, and I have to create 1st-level URLs for both (e.g. site.com/honda and site.com/boston). What's the preferred routing/controller combination to do this in Rails? • so i got an econ degree...computing science or software systems (software engineering) degree ?

  okay so here's the story. i want to work in developing software (not QA or writing tests), so although I am currently starting computing science this summer, i came across Software Systems (aka s.e.) program which is "applied" but under computing science.... so what is the difference between the 2 disciplines ? if i choose software engineering, would it require more in depth expertise with calculus (i fail at it), and more coding time ? i am looking for a way to write better and more efficient code. I want to go to school, so i wont get lazy. i want to pick a program that would directly aid me in writing and developing software. graduating with an Econ degree in last year doesn't really help in landing jobs requiring comp sci/software engineering degrees....i should've studied harder in Economics (and maybe land a job) but i was obsessed with learning how to program with various languages since day 1 at University, but i didn't think i was smart enough to pass comp sci courses (so i just relied on books + irc...) and my parents said software jobs are being outsourced to India so i thought this obsession was just a "phase" and i should keep it as a hobby. but yes, it's quite funny why i hadn't pursued this field much earlier. as Joelonsoftware.com says economics degree starts with a bang (microeconomics the only course you only need really)....predicting stock prices (ridiculous!) + realizing China's potential power to meltdown US economy and vice versa + interest rate is inversely related to bond premium which is inversely related to stock market it would absolutely awesome if there was a program that combined finance + programming.

The .htaccess at the /forum subdirectory contains this: RewriteEngine On RewriteBase /forum RewriteRule ^index.html$ index.php [L,NE] RewriteRule ^(.*)-t-([0-9]+).html(.*)$ showthread.php?tid=$2$3 [QSA,L] RewriteRule ^(.*)-t-([0-9]+)-([0-9]+).html$ showthread.php?tid=$2&page=$3 [QSA,L] followed by other rules mapping SEO-friendly URLs to the true URLs. mydomain.com/forum/a-thread-t-1.html returns the page showthread.php?tid=1 but so does mydomain.com/forum/forum/a-thread-t-1.html, mydomain.com/forum/forum/forum/a-thread-t-1.html and so on. I don't want this behavior - I want pages accessed as /forum/forum/* to return a 404. Any hint on where I had been wrong?

  I currently have an application that for a set of parameters (location, category, budget, ...) a user can enter a "pretty" URL like: /location/canada/ontario /category/primary /budget/small Resulting in the respective parameters: params[:country] == 'canada' and params[:region] == 'ontario' params[:category] == 'primary' params[:budget] == 'small' I want to allow users to perform searches on multiple parameters at once (with each parameter optional). For example: /location/canada/ontario/category/primary/budget/small I understand that this can be achieved using URL parameters, but for SEO reasons I prefer to add the "pretty" parameters. Is this at all possible without listing all possible combination of routes (I have a large number of search-able fields)? I understand that route "globbing" maybe play a roll, but I am not sure how.   I am using PHP. I want to create an MVC setup from scratch to learn more about how MVC works. I want to use clean urls with slashes as delimiters for the arguments. How do people do this when it comes to GET method forms? Or do people avoid GET method forms all together? As of right now the ways I can imagine are: Don't use GET method forms (although this makes it harder to let users bookmark/link in some cases). Use AJAX instead of form submission (although what do you do for SEO and JS disablers?). Have page submit to itself with post method, then reform the post vars into an url, then rerout to that url using headers (seems like wasted resources). Any suggestions or suggested reading welcome.

  is it good practice to use iframe to implement header/navbar? my website is basically 5 thousand pages but all static html (not using any content manager, php, etc.). am in the process to add a navbar at the top of each page. e.g. tabs, or crumbs, or any sort of header with js menu. (the exact design not decided yet) my question is, is it good practice to use a iframe for this? (so, instead have same text repeated in all 5 thousand pages, each will just have a short iframe pointing to a header file) am aware that one should reduce http request for speed, but this is ok with me. Any other problems i might have with this? SEO or any tech issue?

  For SEO purposes the server renders out the full html template for a given URL on initial load. The site uses angularjs which detects the URL route and renders a client template from the JSON API. For example, you navigate to: /blog/post-title Server responds with post-title content. Angular loads, detects route: /blog/:post_slug and begins to load JSON and render client side template from response. Obviously what Angular does is fine when links are followed after the initial load, but on first load it duplicates effort. My question is if there is a clean way to prevent this situation.

• Is there a major downside to using .htaccess files in your svn/git repository?

  If our .htaccess files are purely for mod rewrites, is there a security / development downside to committing .htaccess files alongside other files in your repository? For various reasons (our SEO optimisers like to add pretty urls as new promotions occur, etc) we need a fair few rewrite rules inside these files. Would I be better off pushing the routing into php-land and dealing with it there? Or is reading from a .htaccess via apache fine? The .htaccess files are not exposed via the web server, so that's not a security risk.

I have over 40,000 artists in this table. So, I'd like to convert all artists names to search friendly. What is the best way to accomplish this? Not looking for code here, just ideas. • How should I capture clickstream data?

  I'd like to start using clickstream analysis to improve a dynamic site's user experience. I'd like to rule out two options: parameterizing URLs (index.php?src=http://www.example.com) and immediate database logging. The former makes pretty ugly URLs and isn't great for SEO and the latter might slow down page render when there are lots of concurrent users. Assuming these aren't viable options, I think I'm left with doing an asynchronous POST to a server side script that runs a database query and returns a 204 (no data) response. Is this the best option for capturing clickstream data?

  I have a slight problem with .htaccess redirect. I have a dynamic site with 2 levels of variables - content="type -(alpha)" and ID="number" but this is very not seo friendly what I really would like to create is a rewrite rule that generates a "friendly" url for serach engines & users alike. Very much like WordPress does. Each ID is already unique (obviously) and on creation is creating a unique "permalink" field so for example ID=1 has a "permalink field" as "2009/10/27/page title" and ID=100 would be "2010/10/27 page title". I would like folder/wall.php?content=type&ID=number to redirect to folder/permalink.php/html/htm (don't mind a non dynamic extension) Any clues? - this is not right (I know) but it also "breaks" my css file RewriteEngine On RewriteRule wall/content/(.*)/ID/(.*)/ wall.php?content=$1&ID=$2 RewriteRule wall/content/(.*)/ID/(.*) wall.php?content=$1&ID=$2
