  I have this HUGELY irritating problem on Windows 7 (x64). Whenever I click on ANY link (that exists on a Word document, Excel or Outlook), I get an alert box with the message: This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer I have been scouring my settings and the Internet for a solution, but to no avail. What is the reason for this problem? It even happens when I click anchors in word document. That is, I can't even click on an entry in a Table of Contents to go to the appropriate page - I get this same error then. Is this a Windows 7 thing? Is there any way to turn this off?

• Windows 8, NVIDIA graphics recognition fails

  I just installed Windows 8 Pro OEM 64-bit (clean install) and it won't properly recognize my graphics adapter. When I installed Win8, it automatically installed the BasicDisplay.sys driver dated 6/21/2006. 6.2.9200.16384 (win8_rtm.120725-1247). Hardware - Mobo:MSi G41M-P33 Combo CPU:Intel CoreDuo 6600 Graphics:NVIDIA GeForce 9400GT *OS* - Windows 8 Pro 64-bit OEM The graphics adapter worked fine in Windows XP. The PC is a generic box, bought locally and its mobo failed recently, so I replaced it with the G41M. Microsoft wouldn't let me re-activate Windows XP with a different mobo, so I installed Win8, which appears to work except as described next. Win8 only partially recognizes the graphics adapter and won't allow NVIDIA latest driver installer to see that it's an NVIDIA card. As a result, OpenGL doesn't work, and this is needed by the software I most use. Other than that the graphics look OK. When I say 'partially recognizes', I mean that via the Control Panel, I can see that the adapter is described as NVIDIA, but the driver remains stuck at Microsoft Basic Display Adapter no matter what I try, including "Update driver..." in adapter properties. Display Screen Resolution Advanced Settings Adapter shows: Adapter Type: Microsoft Basic Display Adapter Chip Type: NVIDIA DAC Type: NVIDIA Corporation Bios Information: G27 Board - p381n17 Don't know what this means ... no mention of 9400GT Total Available Graphics Memory: 256 MB Dedicated Video Memory: 0 MB In fact the adapter has 512MB on-board video memory. System Video Memory: 0 MB Shared System Memory: 256 MB And Control Panel Device Manager Display adapters just shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. No other graphics adapter, and no unknown device or yellow question mark. What I have tried so far: 1. Cleared CMOS and reset. Updated BIOS and all mobo drivers as follows: 1st I used Driver Reviver to see if any driver updates were required. It found some but I didn't use that to get the drivers. Then I switched to MSi's own mobo driver utility Live Update 5. This also showed the board needed to update several so I used it to fetch the new drivers. After that it showed that everything was up to date and I checked with Driver Reviver again, which also reported no drivers now needed updating. Rebooted. Went to the NVIDIA site to get the latest graphics adapter driver. Their auto-detect "Option 2: Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products" said "The NVIDIA Smart Scan was unable to evaluate your system hardware. Please use Option 1 to manually find drivers for your NVIDIA products." So I downloaded 310.70-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe, which lists 9400 GT under supported products, but when I run it, it says: "NVIDIA Installer cannot continue This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware." Connected the display to the on-board Intel graphics (G41 Intel Express), removed the NVIDIA card and rebooted, changed to internal graphics in CMOS. Again it installs the MS Basic Display Adapter, and can't properly run my s/w that needs OpenGL. It runs on other machines with Intel Express graphics (WinXP and 7) Shut down and pulled out the power cord. Held start button to discharge all capacitors. Removed and re-inserted NVIDIA adapter in PCI-E slot and made sure properly seated. Connected the monitor to the card, screwed plug to socket. Reconnected power cord. Started and checked in BIOS that Primary Graphics Adapter was set to PCI-E. Started Windows. Uninstalled MS Basic Display Adapter in Device Manager. Screen blanks briefly, reappears. No Graphics adapter entry was then visible in Device Manager. Restarted PC. MS Basic Display Adapter Visible again in Device Manager. Clicked in Device Manager View Show hidden devices. No other graphics adapter appears, no unknown devices. Rebooted. Tried Scan for Hardware changes. None detected. Tried right-click on MS Basic Display Adapter Properties Driver Update Driver... Search automatically. It replied that it had determined driver was up to date. I checked that there were no graphic driver-related entries in Programs and Features that I could delete (none). Searched for any other drivers with nvidia in their name and deleted them, just keeping the 306.97 installer exe file. Did a Windows Update. Ran GPU-Z which shows (main items): Microsoft Basic Display Adapter GPU G72 BIOS 5.72.22.76.88 Device ID 10DE - 01D5 DDR2 Bus Width 32 Bit Memory size 64MB Driver Version nvlddmkm 6.2.9200.16384 (ForceWare 0.00) / Win8 64 NVIDIA SLI Unknown in the drop-down at the foot, "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" is the only option If I swap hard disks in that machine to one with a Ubuntu 10.4 installation (originally installed on the same PC), lspci shows "VGA compatible controller as NVIDIA Corporation Device 01d5 (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])" and "kernel driver in use: nvidia" I'm out of ideas for new things to try and would be really grateful of suggestions. • Common reasons not to use Open Office

  I personally use it on both Windows and Linux, but have MS Office installed at work. I understand that in some business situations there are thousands (upon thousands) of existing MS Office documents that may or may not convert cleanly to Open Office. Not everyone is in that situation though. Among non IT folk, I rarely see OOo. Why is this so? What are common reasons for people not using OpenOffice.org? Are they from before it is even tried, or is it from unsatisfactory experiences when actually using it?

  If I have this text in vim, and my cursor is at the first character: www.foo.com I know that I can do: cw to change up to the first period, because a word (lowercase w) ends at any punctuation OR white space cW to change the whole address, because a Word (uppercase w) ends only at whitespace Now, what if I have this: stupid_method_name and want to change it to this? awesome_method_name Both cw and cW change the whole thing, but I just want to change the fragment before the underscore. My fallback technique is c/_, meaning 'change until you hit the next underscore in a search,' but for me, that also causes all underscores to be highlighted as search terms, which is slightly annoying. Is there a specifier like w or W that doesn't include underscores?

  I have a big problem with the Portuguese version of MS Office 2007 and 2010. The standard shortcuts that any common application uses are changed. Some shortcuts that are not working: Ctrl+S (save), Ctrl+F (find) and Ctrl+A (select all). I want to configure it to use the shortcuts of the English version. There is an option that allow to configure each shortcut separately. Furthermore, I have to configure for each app, if I configure in Word, I will have to configure again for Excel. How to use the shortcuts of the English version of MS Office regardless of the Office language? Thanks

• How do I force excel (and other office products) to stop opening files in the same application?

  Whenever I "double click" on an Excel file and another Excel file is open, the newly opened file automatically opens in the same application window as the previously opened Excel file. This isn't limited to just Excel, as I've seen Word do this as well. This poses a problem when wanting to compare documents side by side. The current solution I have for this is to actually open another Excel or Word instance, and then open the file from within that application window itself. Is there a way to force Office to open a new instance of the application when double clicking on the file icons? I'm currently using Office 2007 and Windows XP but I've seen this on Office 2010 and Windows Vista and 7. I'm looking for an overall solution if possible.

• Corrupted attachments in Thunderbird forward filter

  I created a filter in Thunderbird 14 on client A that, when a certain rule on incoming mail is satisfied, the same mail is forwarded to client B and C. Matching mails received from A are always forwarded to B and C, and that's what I want. Though, when the mail on A has an attachment, it is also forwarded by B and C but the file they receive is corrupted. In my case the incoming file on A is a Word file of about 10kb in size; clients B and C receive a Word file of 27 bytes. I think this could happen because the forward starts from A when the attachment is not yet completely downloaded. I'm not sure this is the cause, though. And I wouldn't have any idea for a fix. Any idea about how to investigate or solve the issue?

  In a folder containing several PowerPoint Presentations and Spreadsheets, I discovered the following file: Name: ppt115.tmp Size: 160 MB Meta: No EXIF or other metadata Type: (as identified by the cygwin / linux program 'file') Composite Document File V2 Document, No summary info Notes: The filename does not correspond to other files in the directory. Neither MS Power Point nor Excel can open the file. MS Word will only attempt to recover text. Please help me identify this file. Is it just a temporary file that I can safely remove?

• Why ping another inet machine from MacBook get netgate's ip address?

  I have three machine in my home network connected by a wireless router. One is server installed linux at 192.168.1.1, another is Thinkpad with MS Windows XP at 192.168.1.2, last one is MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.6.3 at 192.168.1.3. When I ping the Linux Server from Thinkpad (MS Windows XP) I can get the correct ip address, but when I ping it from Mac I get the global address of my router, like 61.135.181.175. Could you tell me why this happen? And how do I get same ping result on Mac and Windows. Thanks

• dnsmasq local network works for some but hostnames are not resolving for others

  I have set up a local network and it seems that some of us can use it properly while others can't. The problem seems to be that the local hostnames I setup don't get resolved for everyone.   Hi, the current Linux Kernel (e.g. 2.6.36) uses Delayed Acknowledgments (delack). In /include/net/tcp.h it says: define TCP_DELACK_MIN ((unsigned)(HZ/25)) So, for a Kernel using a HZ value of 1000, an ACK should be delayed by a minimum of 40 ms. However, RFC 2581 says a TCP implementation should acknowledge every second full sized segment without further delay. Does anybody know whether the Linux Kernel follows that 'should' or whether the TCP_DELACK_MIN value means that even after a full sized segment was received, the ACK continues to be delayed until 40 ms have passed?

  Hello again. I'm after a tool to test how long a password could stand up to a hacking/cracking technique such as brute force as two passwords that are critical to a work system is one word that is in the dictionary, and another is a word in the dictionary with a capital letter and a number instead of a letter. I'd prefer it to be offline and free that you can run on a computer to see how long the password will hold out. Maybe even at the windows login prompt but I realise such programmes may be shady and erring on the side of illegal. Anybody have any suggestions?

• What's the difference between a normal ActiveX killbit update and one for IDX?

  I'm looking back at some old MS security bulletin for distribution to new clients and when I look at downloads for the last set of MS ActiveX killbits, KB article here, under each platform I see links with the term IDX. For instance there will be an entry that says "For Windows 7 for 32-bit versions" and then one a few rows down that says "For Windows 7 IDX for 32-bit versions". What's the difference between the two? I understand from a little digging that idx is one of the field names for the database that ActiveX controls are stored in, but that's not really helpful.

• joining text files with 600M+ lines

  I have two files huge.txt and small.txt. Huge has around 600M rows and it's 14Gigs, each line has four space separated words (tokens) and finally another space separated column with a number. Small has 150K rows with a size of ~3M, a space separated word and a number. Both Files are sorted using the sort command, with no extra options. The words in both files may include apostrophes (') and dashes (-). The deisred output would contain all columns from the huge.txt and the second column (the number) from small txt where the first word of huge.txt and the first word of small.txt match. My attemtpts below failed miserably with the following error: cat huge.txt|join -o 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 2.2 - small.txt > output.txt join: memory exhausted What I suspect is that the sorting order isn't right somehow even though the files are pre-sorted using: sort -k1 huge.unsorted.txt > huge.txt sort -k1 small.unsorted.txt > small.txt Problems seem to appear around words that have apostrophes (') or dashes (-). I also tried dictinoary sorting using the -d option bumping into the same error at the end. I see two ways out of this but don't know how to implement any of them. 1) Any tips how to sort the files in a way that the join command considers them to be sorted properly? 2) I was thinking of calculating MD5 or some other hashes of the strings to get rid of the apostrophes and dashes, and do the sorting and joining with the hashes instead of the strings themselves an dat the "translate" back the hashes to strings, but leave the numbers intact at the end of the lines. Since there would be only 150K hashes it's not that bad. What would be a good way to calculate individual hashes for each of the strings? Some AWK magic? See file samples at the end. • Good documentation tool that is not Latex?

  I am far from being a expert in Latex but I'm ok to document my projects with it. Though I would seldom find people in the corporate word eager to learn latex and going along with the documentation. 99% of the cases they would just ask me the Word version of it. For technical documentation I find less resistance, but still, whenever I start a project with someone not familiar with latex, the starting up is troublesome. That said, latex is a bit of an oversize tool for my needs really. My documents hardly go further from tables, lists, few images and type styles (although I'd love to still be able to produce hyperlinked PDFs). What are other tools there, simpler and with a easier learning curve than Latex, but still PDF worthy and with minimally decent capabilities? It also has to run on windows :( Oh. yeah, MSWord is not an option ;)

  Right now I have an excel spreadsheet. In Cells A1 and down I have cities listed. In Cells B1 and down I have some generic information with the word CITY in it. What I want to know if there is a formula to replace the word CITY that is in the contents of Cell B1 with the contents in Cell A1. For instance... Cell A1 has "Daytona Beach, FL" Cell B1 has "Compare mortgage & refinance rates from different mortgage lenders and brokers in CITY. Find the home refinance rate you were looking for in CITY." I need a formula that replaces "CITY" in B1 with "Dayton Beach, FL" in A1. Is this possible? Thank you for your help!

• Visual Studio 10 Disable Find Autocomplete

  When I misspell something in Visual Studio 10's find box (the one that shows in the editor's main window, not the popup window "Find and Replace" window), VS10 autocompletes to that misspelled word whenever I try fixing it. A Ctrl+Z will remove the entire autocompletion, including the last character I typed (which it can case change!). Backspacing and retyping will still autocomplete to the misspelled word. Only a cut and paste seems to work. Is there a way to disable this horrible feature!? This is a picture of the find box that I am talking about:

  I am editing a 96 chapter book. The text is in normal black letters on a white background. What I want to be able to do is: I want to have any changes or additions automatically shown in another (per-selected) color. Without having to a)high lite a word or phrase to be changed or added and then b)going to the toolbar and clicking on the font color In other words I want the original color of the text to remain as it is and any additions or changes to be visible in another color without having to use the toolbar. Can this be done? I use OpenOffice or Word 2007 in Windows 7.

  I have a Google Drive spreadsheet with a single column that holds string values (Twitter screen names) such as "user1", "user1", "UserX", and I would like to count those values so that I can easily craft a bar chart out of it. So the result should be value occurrence ----------------------- user1 2 UserX 1 ... .... Please note, I only want to look for whole words, and not part words. EG, the words 'on' and 'one' appears in the word 'money' - I would not count this (eg, only the word money is counted). Hope that is clear enough. What formula should I use?

• Do I need more RAM for programming if I switch to a 64 Bit OS?

  Hi, Given that today (for performance reasons?) variables are usually aligned to the "bit-width" (I wanted to use "word-width" here, but on x86 a "word" is still 16 bits right?) of the processor, would switching from a 32 bit OS to its 64 bit version double the RAM usage? Would this then in turn mean that to do the same work a 32 bit OS can do with 4 GB RAM (well, the 3.x GB actually...) with a 64 bit OS I would need 8 GB of RAM for programming? Please note that I'm only talking about everyday x86 computers here.

• Unable to run Microsoft Office 2010 install file

  This problem began when I noticed that the icons in the Windows 7 task bar for MS Word and Outlook were generic. I rebuilt the icon cache. Still not the right icons, but not the generic "document" icons either, and both are identical (to each other). The two programs seem to be working OK. So then I tried to repair MS Office. I ran the setup file. It extracts the files, I get the splash screen, and then the message, "Setup has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." with a "Close program" button. Microsoft does not notify me about a solution. What I have tried: 1. running two other copies of the setup program; 2. doing an in-place re-install of Windows 7.
