• Remove windows line endings (crlf) on basic windows 7 install?

  Is there a way to remove windows line endings on a basic windows 7 install. I'm working on a windows 7 computer with notepad and word 2010 at work. I'm trying to demo markdown without installing additional text editor, and keeping it installed locally. I've tried Word with replace on \r\n, special characters and other ways and it can't locate. Notepad same issue. Or is there a markdown converter that an online markdown converter that will handle windows line endings?

• Truecrypt or default Disk Utility on Mac?

  Windows by default doesn't come with a password protect folder option (other that Win7 ultimate), so I used to swear by Truecrypt which was great. But I've read in a couple of places that Mac OS X by default has a way of protecting folders using the Default Disk Utility. So my question is which is better, using TrueCrypt on the Mac or just sticking with the default Disk Utils app? Can somebody let me know the advantages of one over the other? A summary from the very helpful answers below: if you're looking for cross-platform usage Truecrypt is the obvious tool of choice if you're looking for convenience, and intend to stick only to the Mac platform, use the default Disk Utils app.

• deleting old unused images

  As we move on with our content-based websites, lots of images get dumped in our images folder, but we rarely come across self-committed monkyes that delete their files once they do not need it, which means, we end up with a huge list of images in one folder, and it is very tricky to clean it up. My question is (and i dont know if this is the right website to ask it), is there a tool that allows me to find out if an image has been requested by web in the last (n) months? my other general question is, how do you do it? how do you take control of your images folders? what policy do you enforce on developers to clean up? what measures do you take in order to decide what goes and what stays if you end up with an out-of-control situation? my suggestion was to rename the images folder, create a new one, copy the basic ones and wait for someone to complain about a broken image! :) i find this to be the most efficient.

• Using Ctrl-Tab to switch between tabs in Mac Terminal.app

  How can I make Ctrl-Tab and Ctrl-Shift-Tab switch between tabs in Terminal.app on a Mac (OS 10.4 and 10.5 specifically)? This is how I switch tabs in Firefox and Aquamacs, and Command-Shift-[ and Command-Shift-] is too awkward to me. I am aware of this related question: .../unable-to-switch-a-tab-efficiently-in-macs-terminal* And hence the Keyboard Shortcuts section of the System Preferences, but the dialog box for Keyboard Shortcuts doesn't seem to accept Ctrl-Tab in the Keyboard Shortcut field. Is there a special keyboard sequence for inputting tabs (with modifiers) into a dialog box field on a Mac? Is there any other method that would allow me to customize Terminal.app in the way I desire? Not really a programming question, but I think the answer would be useful to other folks that program on Macs and would like to have some consistency between interfaces of different applications. • Loggon to Internet Hotspot from within Linux Terminal

  For internet I use a local Hotspot service. I have internet when I start my browser and fill in my username and password. This stays as long as I do not shut down my PC for a while. I run some virtual machines, centos, debian, from the command line. I run these just for small test purposes, nothing special, and security is not an issue for me at all. I want to have these VM's connect directly to the hotspot if this is possible. So they each have there own IP. I have enough hotspot accounts to do so. I can do this with a bridged connection in VMware which works find with a GUI. But I run these OS's from the command line. I only need to know a way how to get the hotspot to validate my credentials. Is there a way of doing this without having a gui.

  I can't seem to find the answer to my questions -- hence my posting this here. 1) I have encrypted my home folder in LinuxMint 15 Cinammon x64. If I create images of LM's partitions via fsarchiver, how do I go about selectively restoring home folders, and files from the FS images? 2) I haven't done this yet; but can I restore another users home folder into another user; both unencrypted. Is that a fairly common thing to do in Linux/ubuntu? I mean is the process fairly straightforward? What if the home folder I want to copy over to another user is encrypted? Thx

  What is the proper way of using a USB hard drive or stick between Linux and Windows? (I'm using Linux Mint 14 and Windows XP on different machines) Should I set it up somehow so that all the files are shared and reused safely between Linux and Windows? The question comes from the recent problem I had. I've created and edited a few folders through Linux and they are not working on Windows now (folder is not accessible.   Basically, I want networked games to run poorly on a network, but I want everything else to run smoothly. I would also appreciate advice on blocking games in general. As far as I can tell, there's a few ways to completely prevent an internet game from running: Blocking entirely via DNS configuration (e.g. hosts file), or router DNS configuration Blocking entirely via a separate DNS server Blocking the application, by uninstalling or some kind of access control Blocking the application by automatically killing the process every once in a while Blocking the application by corrupting files periodically However, I would like a more subtle way to block a program. Something that either: Increases latency (would this be doable through some kind of QoS like what DD-WRT offers?) Increases latency by using a special routing configuration for specific target IPs Throttle other systems resources, such as memory, IO, or CPU Screw around with keyboard configurations when a game is launched I would like this to work on MacOSX and Windows, but Linux would be great too. FYI I don't have a kid, but I was brainstorming with some friends and parents.

• Dual-boot two instances of the same copy of Vista using same serial number

  I have a single Vista OEM registration number which has been registered to the current hardware (single partition only), and I want to use it for two instances of dual-booted Vista... Because both Vistas will be running on the same hardware, (and obviously only one at any one time), will they both be recognized as genuine to Windows Update etc... ie will they both pass the Windows Genuine Advantage requirements? .. The only difference between the hardware involved will be the partition. Also, are there any special issues with dual (tripple?) booting two instances of Vista and also one Ubuntu OS?

• Access Denied on a Drive where All Users list have been deleted in Security Tab

  Hi All, (System is Windows 7 x64) I wanted to restrict access of other people in a certain drive of my computer (Harddisk 1 is partitioned to C & D; I want to restrict Drive D). What I did was go to the Security Tab (under Drive Properties) and remove the All Users entry. My account is an administrator account. I left only Systems and Administrator on the list. However, when I tried to access drive D, I got an Access Denied error, and Security Tab is already missing. I tried to edit Local Group Policy; it does not work. Take Ownership is not available for the Drive as well, but I see it enabled if I select files / folders. Please help. Thanks. Also, I am wondering why, as an Administrator, have my access to that drive denied.

• Help replacing old Windows 2003 SBS DC with a Win2008 Standard Edition DC

  Objective: Trying to replace a Windows 2003 SBS domain controller with a windows server 2008 Standard Edition Domain Controller. What I did: used ADPREP. Then all user accounts and OUs are successfully replicated into the 2008 server. I have also managed to transfer all the DC roles (operations master,schema,pdc) into the Server 2008. I have also used NETDOM QUERY FSMO . It displayed that all the roles transferred to the 2008 server. Problem: When I am trying to demote the windows 2003 SBS server using DCPROMO, the message is “No other Active Directory for this domain can be contacted”. I also tried shutting down the 2003 server. Users can login into the domain but they have trouble finding SHARED folders. Can someone help me find out what I did wrong ? Need a little push in the right direction here. Thank you very much ?

• Use Modern Apps in Windows 7

  It seems like a basic question, but is there a way to run windows 8 (Modern Apps) in windows 7 (without a VM, that seems like cheating)? My hunch is that it would be possible with some sort of hack, as the code is written in the same .Net languages as many other programs. The only issue would be intercepting the finger to corner gestures, but I am not sure how much is there really (is it just a location, or a special win API call). Is there software that can do this, or options that need to be changed to make this work?

• How do I run AWS code on an EC2 instance?

  I just started with Amazon web services, and I have an EC2 instance. I downloaded the JAVA SDK and the Eclipse toolbox. I am able to run a sample program locally on my PC and connect to the Amazon databases, etc. My question is, what do I need to do to get this working on my EC2 instance? This may not even be specific to AWS. On Eclipse, I can just "Run as Application" and run any code. On the server side, what do I need to do? Should I ftp over my .java files? Should I export it to a jar and upload that? Do I need to install anything special to actually run it?

• Implications and benefits of removing NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM from sysadmin role?

  Disclaimer: I am not a DBA. I am a database developer. A DBA just sent a report to our data stewards and is planning to remove the NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM account from the sysadmin role on a bunch of servers. (The probably violate some audit report they received). I see a MSKB article that says not to do this. From what I can tell reading a variety of disparate information on the web, a bunch of special services/operations (Volume Copy, Full Text Indexing, MOM, Windows Update) use this account even when the SQL Server and Agent service etc are all running under dedicated accounts.

• Windows 7 homegroup sharing problem

  I have two machines in a homegroup. My desktop and my wife's laptop. The public folders like pictures, videos, etc. are shared fine. But if I try to share a single folder with the homegroup from the laptop, I don't see it on my desktop. I see suggestions of rebooting, leaving and rejoining the homegroup; even recreating the homegroup. Frankly, that's just ridiculous. If those are the only solutions then the feature is just not working as it should. Is it possible I'm experiencing these problems because I am still running the public beta of WIndows 7 (yeah I know, I need to get over my laziness and reinstall) while my wife is running the release version? Are there solutions to this problem that don't involve the somewhat drastic measures mentioned above?

  What is the "box mode" (for a lack of a better word) in Firefox? How can I exit it again? If I hold down the Ctrl key and left click while the cursor is over some element on a page it becomes boxed: Firefox seems to go into some special mode. What is this mode for? How can I go back to normal mode? Installed add-ons in Firefox: BetterPrivacy 1.29, NoScript 1.9.0.6 and SQLite Manager 0.4.7. (Microsoft .NET Framework Assistent 1.0 is disabled.) Platform: Firefox 3.0.6, Windows XP 64 bit SP2, 8 GB RAM.

  I am doing log shipping between two Amazon EC2 instances running Windows Server 2008 R2 with SQL Server 2008 R2 standard edition. Both the instances are in the same domain and I can access the shared folders between the instances. The SQL server service account, agent service account are all running under a domain account. When I activate log shipping (with stand by mode restore in secondary server), the initial backup gets restored on the secondary. After that the backup operation is getting failed and i get the following error message: *** Error: Could not retrieve backup settings for primary ID 'xxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-4d772cd7337e'.(Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.LogShipping) *** *** Error: Failed to connect to server IP-0A7653F2.(Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo) *** ****** Error: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server.******** **The server was not found or was not accessible. • Filezilla FTP Server - Security Implications of its usage on Windos Server 2003

  I'm running Filezilla server on my dedicated windows 2003 server. It uses its own user-access control system. The Filezilla server service itself is running under the System user. When I setup users within the FTP Server Administrator Interface, I do not need to setup equivalent users, or adjust permissions on folders to allow users to login. Example: I setup TestFTP user with password 'p' I set the home directoy of TestFTP user to be e:/website I verify that e:/website only has permission for the System and Admin accounts (right click - security in windows explorer) TestFTP is able to login to the server just fine. I'm OK with this (perhaps due to ignorance?). Is it generally frounded upon to utilize a FTP Server such as FileZilla Server that bypasses the built-in UAC in this method? If I wasn't clear enough, please let me know.

• Find running processes created by Mac Automator

  Is there any way to view automator process that are running? About a year ago I created a workflow or something similar in Mac's Automator. When I took screenshots mac would place them on the desktop. I created a small script to take move those screenshots to a different folder. I want to change what folder those are saved in now. Problem is, I can't figure out how to edit my workflow. The biggest problem, I don't know where the workflow/file is stored. The process is always running so anytime I take a screenshot it is moved. Is there any way to view automator process that are running? Also, I know there are other ways to make screenshots appear in different folders. I still want to find this process/script and kill it =) Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

• Run a batch file silently, executed at remote desktop login

  In our office we are using Linux thin client machines, they work very well except the lack of IE, which is a pain because the corporations we deal with are too stupid to update their web apps (no flame wars please). To solve this problem we have machine in our computer room which users remote desktop into to access internet explorer, this is achieved by running a batch script which opens IE and when it closes logs them off, this setup works well for us. Even though I have @echo off and the cmd window isn't displaying anything, I would really like that batch file to be executed silently, so the cmd window doesn't appear at all. Is this possible? The Ubuntu terminal server client has an option to launch a file / app at login, is there a command I can use to run this batch silently. I have tried these: C:\my_batch.bat /NOCONSOLE C:\my_batch.bat /NOWINDOW C:\my_batch.bat /B C:\my_batch.bat /Q ...with no success, perhaps it's the way I am doing it? Cheers :-) Edit The remote desktop platform is a Windows XP machine, nothing entirely special but not a Windows Server setup.

• How to make security group in one forest show up in another forest?

  I have two Win2k8 forests which I do maintenance on. The two forests have full 2 way external, non transitive trust with each other. I have a folder in forest X, domain countryX.mycompany.com accessible ONLY by the global security group named $group. In forest Y, domain countryY.mycompany.com, countryY\user1, countryY\user2 etc needs to have access to the folder. The natural instinct is to put user1, user2 etc into the $group. However, none of the methods for adding user to group works as it appears that the AD cannot find the groups in the other forest. Question: 1.How to make forests see each other's security groups and be able to add? 2.In practice, what is the recommended way to achieve the user access to the folders/files in another forest?

• Move files and resize partition automatically?

  I'm in a bit of an odd situation. I've recently been working on switching from debian to arch, and I've got my home partition for both pointing to the same partition (different usernames, so that's not an issue). What I want to do is one of two things, either: Set up user on arch with same username and group as debian, and have everything just sort of work! OR Move files I'd like to share between home folders to their own partition, and mount it with fstab. For the second one, I have around 150gb of files that would need moved to their own partition, and i've got about 15gb of free space on my home partition. So what I'd want to do is somehow make a 10gb ext4 partition, move 10gb-ish of files, expand the partition again, move files again, etc until all the files are moved to their own partition. I can do it manually, but it'd be easier if I could say "Move 10GB-ish of files from here to there, and then resize it and repeat until I'm out of files". Is that even possible?
