• grouping objects to achieve a similar mean property for all groups

  I have a collection of objects, each of which has a numerical 'weight'. I would like to create groups of these objects such that each group has approximately the same arithmetic mean of object weights. The groups won't necessarily have the same number of members, but the size of groups will be within one of each other. In terms of numbers, there will be between 50 and 100 objects and the maximum group size will be about 5. Is this a well-known type of problem? It seems a bit like a knapsack or partition problem. Are efficient algorithms known to solve it? As a first step, I created a python script that achieves very crude equivalence of mean weights by sorting the objects by weight, subgrouping these objects, and then distributing a member of each subgroup to one of the final groups. I am comfortable programming in python, so if existing packages or modules exist to achieve part of this functionality, I'd appreciate hearing about them. Thank you for your help and suggestions.

• SharePoint 2010 GAC deployment doesn't update

  The following issue just crept up on me. The steps mentioned below had worked just fine until about 2 days ago. When I deploy a update to a solution (of web parts) to a SharePoint 2010 server I don't see the update. The solution does get installed, but from what I can tell the installed web parts are over a month old (nothing new is installed). I do the following steps through PowerShell: retract the solution from the web app remove the solution add the solution install the solution to the web app I have tried restarting the Web App, restarting IIS and also restarting the server. Nothing seems to work. I notice that after I remove the solution it does get removed from the GAC. After I add/install it the solution does reappears in the GAC. Am I missing something? Am I overlooking a step that I should be doing? Something to try?

• Use a cat + grep as an included source in bash

  I'm on a shared webhost where I don't have permission to edit the global bash configuration file at /ect/bashrc. Unfortunately there is one line in the global file, mesg y, which puts the terminal in tty mode and makes scp and similar commands unavailable. My local ~./bashrc includes the global file as a source, like so: # Source global definitions if [ -f /etc/bashrc ]; then . /etc/bashrc fi My current workaround uses cat and grep to output the global file, sans offending line, into a local file and use that as a source. # Source global definitions if [ -f /etc/bashrc ]; then cat /etc/bashrc | grep -v mesg > ~/.bash_global . ~/.bash_global fi Is there a way to do include a grokked file like this without the intermediate step of creating an actual file? And it also may not be properly closed with /. The src attribute is always there. • adding a background color to search term results

  I'm trying to add a background color to a user submitted search result when a user enters a search term on a page (which is basically one big table). This is a text based search. I'm using jquery to show/hide the table rows that do not have the search term as text within the TR, but I'd ideally like to take the additional step of taking the search term (the entered value), and matching any of those text terms in the remaining (showing) rows and adding say a yellow background to the word(s). • MySQL : delete from table that is used in the where clause

  I am writing a small script to synchronize 2 MySQL tables ( t1 to be 'mirrored' to t2 ) In a step I would like to delete rows inside t2 that has been delete in t1 with the same id. I tried this query : delete from t2 where t2.id in ( select t2.id left join t1 on (t1.id=t2.id) where t1.id is null ) But Mysql forbid me to use t2 in the same time in the delete and in the select (sound logical by the way) Of course, I can split the query into 2 queries : first select IDs, then delete rows with these IDs. My question : do you have a cleaner way to delete row from t2 that does not exist anymore in t1 ? with one query only ?

I never seta root password for mysql and in final step of installing wordpressit askfor root password of mysql. What is the default password for root (if there is one) and how to change it? • Why does casting a NaN to a long yield a valid result?

  In the sample code below I am dividing by zero which when I step through it with the debugger the (dividend / divisor) yields an Infinity or NaN (if the divisor is zero). When I cast this result to a long I get a valid result, usually something like -9223372036854775808. Why is this cast valid? Why doesn't it stop executing (throw an exception for example) rather than assign an arbitrary value? double divisor = 0; double dividend = 7; long result = (long)(dividend / divisor);

• Why does the CPU window always appear when trying to debug my project after a rebuild in Delphi 2010

  Hi, Whenever I rebuild my application and try to step into a break-point the CPU window always appears. From what I understand the CPU window appears when DCU does not match up with the source file, however, in my case the DCU's are defintely being re-compiled and there are no old ones lying around or anything like that. The strange thing here is if I close down the application and re-open the project, place the breakpoint and run it works fine. I can even modify files and just press F9 to run the project and it works fine....it only seems to be when I rebuild the project (via IDE Project menu or the project context menu) that this CPU window never breaks into the source (even though it can find it!). I also noticed in the callstack a unit called Generics is always the top of the stack, never the unit my break point is in, this is no way related to where my break point is. Any ideas?

  created the first rails app! excinting! for two weeks now I did Zombie, rubymonk etc. I love it! I used scaffold form url:string and included the gem share_counts. rails c: f = form.first ShareCounts.twitter f.url works! but... I have trouble to write the controller and the view! For you experienced railies this is probably a silly question, and probably only 5 lines of code, but for me thats a big step learning RoR!   Stackoverflow members, How do you currently find the balance between javascript and code behind. I have recently come across some extremely bad (in my eyes) legacy code that lends itself to chaos (someHugeJavafile.js) which contains a lot of the logic used in many of the pages. Let's say for example that you have a Form that you need to complete. 1. Personal Details 2. Address Information 3. Little bit more about yourself You don't want to overload the person with all the fields at once, so you decide to split it up into steps. Do you create separate pages for Personal Details, Address Information and a Little bit more about yourself. Do you create controls for each and hide and show them on a postback or using some update panel? Do you use jQuery and do some checking to ensure that the person has completed the required fields for the step and show the new "section" by using .show()? How do you usually find the balance?

  I am trying to learn Asp.net MVC framework. I was looking at the video tutorial at the link below http://www.asp.net/learn/mvc-videos/video-395.aspx In this video the very first step is to add a new database to the example application. I have visual studio installed on my development machine but the SqlServer Express is running on a different machine, so when I try and add a new database following the same steps as the video I get the following error "Connections to SQL Server files(*.mdf) require SQL express 2005 to funciton properly. Please verify the installation of the component or download from the url" I am assuming this is because Visual studio is looking for an instance of SQL express on my local machine and since it doesnt exist on the local machine,it errors out. So how do i tell visual studio, to connect to a different machine and create the database there? I am using Visual studio 2008 with .net 3.5 Sp1

• What's the correct way to represent a linear process in CocoaTouch (UIKit)?

  I need to represent a linear process (think wizard) in an iPad app. In principle I could use a UINavigationController and just keep pushing new controllers for each step of the process. But this seems rather inefficient since the process I'm modeling has no notion of navigating backwards so all previous views would pointlessly stay around and use up resources. At the moment I keep adding and removing a subview to one "master" viewcontroller and basically swapping out the contents. This works but feels rather clunky and I hope there is some nicer way to achieve this. Additionally there needs to be an animated transition between the views. (I have this working at the moment via beginAnimations / commitAnimations)

• PropertyUtils performance

  I have a problem where i need to walk through an object graph and pick out a particular property value. My original solution caches a linked list of property names that need to be applied in order to get from point A to point B in the object graph. I then use apache commons PropertyUtils to iterate through the linked list calling getProperty(Object bean, String name) until i have reached point B. My question is around how this will perform compared to perhaps cahing the Method objects for each step. What is propertyUtils doing under the bonnet? Is it doing a lot of reflection / heavy lifting?

  I'm getting started with OpenGL and shaders using GLUT and PyOpenGL. I can draw a basic scene but for some reason I can't get it to update. E.g. any changes I make during idle(), display(), or reshape() are not reflected. • Is INT the correct datatype for ABS(CHECKSUM(NEWID()))?

  I'm in the process of creating unique customers ID's that is an alternative Id for external use. In the process of adding a new column "cust_uid" with datatype INT for my unique ID's, When I do an INSERT into this new column: Insert Into Customers(cust_uid) Select ABS(CHECKSUM(NEWID())) I get a error: Could not create an acceptable cursor. OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SHQ2IIS1" returned message "Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done. I've check all data types on both tables and the only things that has changed is the new column in both tables. The update is being done on one Big @$$ table...and for reasons above my pay grade, we would like to have new uid's that are different form the one's that we currently have "so users don't know how many accounts we actually have." Is INT the correct datatype for ABS(CHECKSUM(NEWID())) ?

• Stored Procedure Permissions Problem

  I have migrated a set of SQL 2000 databases to SQL 2008. Most is working well, however I have some stored procedures that scheduled and run by SQL Server Agent jobs that are giving me troubles. Many of the scheduled stored procedures work, but the stored procs that access a database other than the default databases are failing with the following message: Executed as user: XYZ\YadaYada. The server principal: "XYZ\YadaYada" is not able to access the database "MyOtherDatabaseOnSameServer" under the current security context. [SQL STATE 08004](Error 619) The step failed. Obviously, I changed the names to protect the guilty. The account is a user in all of the relavent databases and is a memeber of db_owner, db_datareader, and db_datawriter. When I run these same procedures from a query window in SMS using the same accounts (I have tried many) they work fine. What am I missing?

• what changes when your input is giga/terabyte sized?

  I just took my first baby step today into real scientific computing today when I was shown a data set where the smallest file is 48000 fields by 1600 rows (haplotypes for several people, for chromosome 22). And this is considered tiny. I write Python, so I've spent the last few hours reading about HDF5, and Numpy, and PyTable, but I still feel like I'm not really grokking what a terabyte-sized data set actually means for me as a programmer. For example, someone pointed out that with larger data sets, it becomes impossible to read the whole thing into memory, not because the machine has insufficient RAM, but because the architecture has insufficient address space! It blew my mind. What other assumptions have I been relying in the classroom that just don't work with input this big? What kinds of things do I need to start doing or thinking about differently? (This doesn't have to be Python specific.)

But where and how to you specify the password? • Launching The package installer.

  Hi, I'm looking for a way to automatically start the android Package Installer , after the browser finishes downloading an apk file . Any ideas on this ? Currently after the download is over the list of downloaded files is displayed and clicking on the downloaded apk launches the Package installer . (step which I'd like to automatize) I've thought on launching the instalation manually with code like this : intent.setAction(android.content.Intent.ACTION_VIEW); intent.setDataAndType(Uri.parse("file:///sdcard/downloadedApk"), "application/vnd.android.package-archive"); startActivity(intent); ,but I'm unable to find when the download completes to execute the snipet above.

• Bitmap size exceeds VM budget after second load

  This is driving me crazy. I have a game which has a bitmap as the background, this is big so I scale it down and this works fine. However when I navigate to another activity and then reload the game screen it crashes on drawing the background. I am calling recycle on all the bitmaps and setting them to null on onDestroy() but this doesn't help. Any ideas and if not how can I debug the memory to see at which step its growing. I looked at getting the heap but nothing of any size is on there really. Thanks.

  I have this string in PHP Hopelessly Incredible |SPG:M| 766 STEAM_0:1:20130600 " banned "A Blatantly Obvious Hacker 740 STEAM_0:1:55386073 " (minutes "0") (reason "Multi-Hack") The Format of the string is: Name1 Number(0-3 digits) Steam_0:x:xxxx offense (banned/kicked/mute etc) Name2 Number(0-3 digits) Steam_0:x:xxxx time reason My goal is to remove the values 766 and 740 because it is just garbage. Those values can have single, double, and triple digits. The next step would be to strip STEAM_0:1:20130600 and STEAM_0:1:55386073 out of the string and capture it in a new variable. The only constant is STEAM_0: the rest can change. I am still learning regex but I fear this is a bit complicated for me to do. Some guidance would be most appreciative.
