Primary IDE Channel: Ultra DMA Mode 5 >> PIO Mode

Hi, my netbook was having huge audio lag and just abnormally slow processing. After doing some searching on the internet, I found out that I needed to uninstall/reinstall the Primary IDE Channel found under the IDE controller section in the Device Manager. I would then set the Transfer Mode to DMA if available and everything would be great. For a period of time, I would see that "Ultra DMA Mode 5" was the current transfer mode, but every so often, it'd revert back to "PIO Mode", which is when it's really laggy. What can I do to prevent the Primary IDE Channel to revert from Ultra DMA Mode to PIO Mode? Also, my netbook has BSODed a few times when it is in PIO Mode, without any real explanation. Only difference is that I have upgraded to 2.0 GB of DDR2 RAM. EDIT: For all who are looking for an answer to this problem, click the link in Kythos's answer and look at number 6 (Re-enable DMA using the Registry Editor). This always works for me now. If on reboot, you seem to only have a black screen after XP is loading, just wait... it is still loading and will show signs of life after 2-3 minutes.

I have a Cisco 891W NATing Voice and Data to the internet over a 10mbit/2mbit connection. Voice traffic gets degraded when I upload large files. Pings time out as well. I tried to configure a QoS policy but it's basically not doing anything. Voice traffic still degrades when upload bandwidth gets saturated. How to get the permissions right for /dev/raw1394

I recently upgraded one of my ubuntu machines to Karmic and I'm having trouble getting the permissions of /dev/raw1394 set to 0666. They only thing this machine is used for is recording audio from a firepod which uses /dev/raw1394 via jackd and there are no other FireWire devices connected, so security around this device is not really an issue. If I run as root, everything works as expected, but I have some folks that run the recorder that I don't want to have root access. Inexpensive, simple screen recording application for mac

I am more and more consistently running into the need to create screencasts (record my screen) for clients to show them how to use programs or websites. Up until now I've been using Jing and it's been wonderful. But I would like something that can give me something less annoying than a .swf. A .mov or, best of all, something that plays without fuss on Mac and Windows. Also, the 5-minute limit is annoying, but not show stopping. Basically, I'd like to be able to actually give them the file on a CD or something instead of relying on whatever host I use staying up for eternity. To sum up, here's what I require: Record a portion or all of the screen. Records audio from mic while recording screen. Exports files easily playable on Mac and Windows (requiring Quicktime is okay, but not ideal) Will work on Mac OS 10.5+ Allows recording videos of at least 5 minutes. Text in recorded videos is easily readable when exported. Bonuses points for: Records videos greater than 5 minutes Exported videos will work in Windows Media player without any fuss. I haven't upgraded to Snow Leopard yet but I know it has some screen recording stuff built in but I don't know if it would be sufficient or not. The reason I say, "simple" is because most of the applications I've seen do much more than I need (I mean, Jing is nearly perfect for my needs) and cost more than I would like to spend.

How to write files in specific order?

Okay, here's a weird problem -- My wife just bought a 2014 Nissan Altima. So, I took her iTunes library and converted the .m4a files to .mp3, since the car audio system only supports .mp3 and .wma. So far so good. Then I copied the files to a DOS FAT-32 formatted USB thumb drive, and connected the drive to the car's USB port, only to find all of the tracks were out of sequence. All tracks begin with a two digit numeric prefix, i.e., 01, 02, 03, etc. So you would think they would be in order. So I called Nissan Connect support and the rep told me that there is a known problem with reading files in the correct order. He said the files are read in the same order they are written. So, I manually copied a few albums with the tracks in a predetermined order, and sure enough he was correct. So I copied about 6 albums for testing, then changed to the top level directory and did a "find . music.txt". Then I passed this file to rsync like this: rsync -av --files-from=music.txt . ../Marys\ Music\ Sequenced/ The files looked like they were copied in order, but when I listed the files in order of modified time, they were in the same sequence as the original files: ../Marys Music Sequenced/Air Supply/Air Supply Greatest Hits ls -1rt 01 Lost In Love.mp3 04 Every Woman In The World.mp3 03 Chances.mp3 02 All Out Of Love.mp3 06 Here I Am (Just When I Thought I Was Over You).mp3 05 The One That You Love.mp3 08 I Want To Give It All.mp3 07 Sweet Dreams.mp3 11 Young Love.mp3 So the question is, how can I copy files listed in a file named music.txt, and copy them to a destination, and ensure the modification times are in the same sequence as the files are listed?

Computer speakers receive radio station signal

I have a set of Logitech 5.1 speakers where each speaker and the source plug into the subwoofer. I'm using a Griffin Firewave with output from my MacBook Pro, and output from my custom-built desktop with a switch in the middle (built it myself out of an old Belkin A/B parallel switch). Recently, I've noticed that I can hear a local Punjabi radio station being picked up by my speakers, and the volume of this interference increases as I increase the volume of the speakers. I'm fairly sure that this radio station is at the low-end of the FM spectrum, below 90MHz (or it may be at the high end, above 105MHz, my memory isn't infallible). It gets quite annoying as I can't put my audio very loud without the interference. I've tried to put a ferrite core on the input cable just before the 3.5mm jacks plug into the subwoofer. I don't know if putting the same core around all three of the cables (green, black, orange) would negate the effects, but I'm assuming not. There has been no change. Is there any reason why this would be happening? I'm assuming the interference is coming somewhere between the FireWave and the subwoofer, because the noise gets amplified with volume increases. If anybody has any suggestions, I'd be grateful!

I have the following motherboard Tyan Thunder K8WE S2895A2NRF Motherboard - extended ATX - nForce Pro 2200/2050 - Socket 940 - UDMA133, Serial ATA-300 (RAID) - 2 x Gigabit Ethernet - FireWire - 6-1 channel audio This is part of a computer that was assembled in the winter of 2006/2007. The user manual says the following with regard to SATA Integrated SATAII Generation 1 Controllers (from NForce Professional 2200) Two integrated dual port SATA II controllers Four SATA connectors support up to four drives 3 Gb/s per direction per channel NvRAID v2.0 support Supports RAID 0, 1, 0+1 and JBOD. I just purchased a SATA DVD burner. Here is the page for the product http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B002QGDWLK/ The problem I am facing is that I already have 4 SATA drives installed. I don't want to remove any of them. However, I want the DVD burner above installed as well. The person I am consulting with here (Bombay, India) tells me that my four available SATA ports are filled, and that my only option is to install a SATA card into the one free PCI slot on the motherboard. However, he says that with this setup I will not be able to boot from the DVD drive. Are these statements correct, and what are my other options if any? Even it the statements in the last para are true, I suppose I could use one of the motherboard connectors/ports there are currently being used with the hard drives with the DVD drive, and use the "add-on" connector with one of the hard drives. Not all the 4 hard drives need to be bootable. BTW, despite having read through http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA#Cables.2C_connectors.2C_and_ports I am fuzzy on the differences between connectors, cables and ports. Thanks in advance.

script to run sox to combine multiple mono tracks to stereo

I have a folder full of .wav audio files. Some are stereo, most are mono splits. The mono split pairs are all named foo bar track.L.wav and foo bar track.R.wav I can use the command line tool sox to combine a mono pair into 1 stereo track like this: sox -M track1.L.wav track1.R.wav track1.Stereo.wav where the first 2 files are the mono pairs, and the third is the output stereo file. This is great, but I'd like to have a script that will automatically find all the mono pairs and combine them into stereo files. I.e., I need it to find all files which have the same name except for the .L. and .R. before the extension, and run sox on them, outputting to a new file with the same name without the L/R suffix. For example, if my folder contains these files: track1.L.wav track2.L.wav track3.L.wav track4.L.wav track1.R.wav track2.R.wav track3.R.wav track4.R.wav track6.wav track7.wav I need to run these commands: sox -M track1.L.wav track1.R.wav track1.Stereo.wav sox -M track2.L.wav track2.R.wav track2.Stereo.wav sox -M track3.L.wav track3.R.wav track3.Stereo.wav sox -M track4.L.wav track4.R.wav track4.Stereo.wav Here's where I am so far: for file in ./*.L.wav; do file2=`echo $file | sed 's_\(.*\).L.wav_\1.R.wav_'`; out=`echo $file | sed 's_\(.*\).L.wav_\1.STEREO.wav_'`; echo $file - $file2 - $out; done That works, but when I replace the echo line with sox -M $file $file2 $out; it doesn't work; spaces in the filenames cause it to fail.

Songbird looping my library playlist

I'm using Songbird (on Windows) as my iTunes replacement. There's two things that annoy me about Songbird: 1) It has a web browser built in. I can ignore this as I don't use it. But, seriously, a web browser? :/ 2) It loops my library. This, I don't like. The way I play my audio is by launching Windows Explorer, navigating to my media library and double clicking on a single MP3. I only want to hear that one MP3. I don't use the Media Import function in Songbird - Or any other media player. But it insists on adding every song I play to the Library. Disabling this would be excellent but, falling short of that, I'd at least like to stop it repeating every song in the library. When Songbird finishes playing the last song in the Library (which is the song I just opened via Windows Explorer (gets appended to the library)), it jumps to the top of the library and starts playing all the songs again. How can I stop this? Songbird is set to 'Repeat none'

How to use my computer as a Headset device for my phone with Bluetooth?

I want to extract the audio from my phone (the analog TV and FM/AM receiver mainly) and play it through my computer speakers. There is a headphone jack but it is of non-standard size (probably a micro-jack) and I do not have access to a shop that sells that kind of equipment in my area so doing this with Bluetooth is the only solution I can foresee. Both my laptop and my phone support A2DP but for some reason the service (from the phone) does not show up while I add a new connection and the phone does not let me initiate a connection with any other profile except FTP (although it detects other services in the service list like A2DP and works perfectly fine with other profiles like DUN, HID, OPP, SSP if the connection is started through the computer). I am currently using the latest version of the Toshiba stack, I have tried using WIDCOMM but it refuses to install drivers for both the internal Bluetooth (which is a Broadcom device) and the USB Bluetooth that I use on my desktop. The standard Microsoft stack (generic driver) does install but it does not work with both of my devices as they do not detect any Bluetooth devices when scanning. With BlueSoleil (the default stack that came with the USB Bluetooth) I could set my device as "headset" instead of only "laptop/desktop", and this allowed both my phones to detect my laptop as a device they can use as a headset, but the problem with this stack was that only the older phone could actually connect to my laptop and that the internal Bluetooth could not be used. Basically, I want to set the device type as a "headset" for my phone using the Toshiba stack like I did with BlueSoleil. Is there any way this could be done? Thanks. Networking Home Office

I'm in the process of building an office in my garden. It's about 25m away from my house. I'd like to run a wired network connection to the office. I'd rather not go down the powerline route, as speeds don't seem great, and I'm likely to want to be moving a lot of data around on the internal network. I have an electrician who is running armoured electrical cable to the office, and is providing conduit for me to run network cable. My questions are: 1) What type of cable to run 2) How I terminate/connect it at both ends I could get something like armoured cat6 utp solid core (like this: http://www.netstoredirect.com/cat6-cable/289166-external-armoured-cat6-utp-solid-cable-price-per-metre.html) which seems fairly robust, but then I have to terminate it. Additionally, where the cable enters my house, there is about another 15m to where my router is situated. I also read this artice: http://www.audioholics.com/audio-video-cables/bjc-cat-network-cable-quality-interview which scared me into realising I don't know what I'm doing!! particularly with termination. Or I could get an "cat6 external patch cable" (e.g http://www.netstoredirect.com/rj45-network-cables/239231-external-cat6-utp-ldpe-rj45-patch-leads.html) and run that in the conduit, and work out how to terminate it at the house end. At the office end I guess I can just plug it into a switch. Any help? Thanks

New SSD freezing on older motherboard (intel G31)

I have an ECS G31T-M motherboard running a Core2 Quad processor, 4gb RAM, Windows 7 32bit, Geforce 9600GT. Bought a Sandisk Extreme III 120GB (SDSSDX-120G-G25) and installed today. I'm outputting this from my 9600GT with included TV-out adapter to Component video (to my HDTV). This motherboard is SATA 2 and from what I can tell, SSDs run on the IDE controller and there is nothing fancy to set up advanced features of SSDs. I've noticed on other forums (but not verifying with ECS) this board does not support AHCI. I have two versions of Windows 7 installed on two drives, the SSD and an old 500G disc drive. When booted from my older 500G HDD, video plays fine on the HDTV. When booting the SSD windows 7 install, I am freezing constantly, as in, video plays OK for a minute, then picture freezes for 1-3 minutes (sometimes as audio continues playing) and returns for 20-30 seconds before doing the same thing again. Other tasks such as basic maneuvering through file folders seems to be no problem. Please help!! Do I need a new system for this thing to work, or could there be other fixes? I updated firmware to R201 to no avail. DJM

I found the following in a text file, and I would like to use the Apple Service Diagnostic Application from a bootable USB key but I cannot find where to download it or set it up? Also is this free software or does it require a separate licence? It sounds like it would be a useful tool for diagnosing Mac problems. The Apple Service Diagnostic application is designed to run both EFI and Mac OS X tests from an external USB hard drive. Apple Service Diagnostic (EFI) runs low-level tests of the hardware directly and does not require Mac OS X, while Apple Service Diagnostic (OS) uses Mac OS X to run tests. Booting and Using the Apple Service Diagnostic Application - Before using Apple Service Diagnostic, disconnect any Ethernet network, USB, and audio cables. - With the USB hard drive containing ASD 3S123 plugged into a USB port, restart the computer and hold down the option key as the computer boots up into the Startup Manager. To run ASD (EFI) select the "ASD EFI 3S123" drive icon and press return or select it with a mouse click. To run ASD (OS) select the "ASD OS 3S123" drive icon and press return or select it with a mouse click. ASD (EFI) will load in 20-30 seconds; ASD (OS) will load in 2-3 minutes. - After running ASD (OS) or ASD (EFI), press the Restart button to restart the computer back into the normal startup volume, or hold down the option key to get back to the Startup Manager. ASD is no longer delivered as an image to be restored onto a DVD. ASD 3S117 and newer versions requires installation onto an external USB hard drive. Tablet as Car Computer

Okay, so forward this off to the right place if this isn't the right place to ask this question. I want to use a tablet computer as a car-computer. Minimum features would be to run my music (through iPod, Pandora, whatever I want) and GPS Navigation, watch TV or movies while I'm parked waiting for people, and the hard one: it needs to answer my phone calls with a pleasant interface much like in-dash systems do. It needs to detect that my phone is ringing in my pocket and provide an on-screen answer/ignore and then route the audio through the cars speakers. It would be nice to dial out and have address book access, but that is somewhat secondary. I have an iPhone myself and I figured that an iPad with 3G might make a good system for this - but I'm open to other options if an iPad can't do everything I need. I'm willing to write code, and I'm willing to jailbreak one or both devices. I haven't done much work in Obj-C, but I'm not opposed to learning a new language for this project. It's self enrichment for the most part, as I'm sure I can buy an indash entertainment system for less. Does anyone have experience with the iPhone/iPad SDK that can tell me whether or not it would be possible to get it an iPad to answer my calls in the car? What about an Android tablet? (that Adam looks promising, too).

Unix Permissions issue with users belonging to the same group accessing a folder

I have a folder I'd really like to allow another user on this machine access to. I'm using mt-daapd to serve music to the network, so I'd like to enable the mt-daapd user to access my Music directory, /home/rfkrocktk/Music. The master user is rfkrocktk obviously. I've tried to set all of my permissions properly on the directory, but the mt-daapd user can't acces the files. I created a group called media-users and added both rfkrocktk and mt-daapd to it in order to give mt-daapd permission to simply read all of the files in that directory and subdirectories. If I run id on each of my users, here's what's displayed: $ id rfkrocktk > uid=1000(rfkrocktk) gid=1000(rfkrocktk) groups=1000(rfkrocktk),4(adm),20(dialout),24(cdrom),29(audio),46(plugdev),104(lpadmin),115(admin),120(sambashare),124(vboxusers),1001(jupiter),2002(media-users) $ id mt-daapd > uid=123(mt-daapd) gid=65534(nogroup) groups=65534(nogroup),2002(media-users) It definitely seems that both users are a part of the media-users group, so what could be going wrong? Running sudo -i -u mt-daapd ls -l /home/rfkrocktk/Music displays nothing, indicating to me that for whatever reason, mt-daapd doesn't have access to read the folder. What am I doing wrong?

ASUS EAH5450 Graphics Card (ATI Radeon HD5450 - 1 GB DDR3) on Windows 2003? Anybody got it to work?

Hi all! I've just bought an ASUS EAH5450 Graphics Card (ATI Radeon HD5450, 1 GB DDR3) for my main system, but I haven't been able to make it work under Windows 2003 (my OS in that system). When I plugged the card, I got a couple of "installing drivers" prompt for things such as "ATI High Definition Audio Device" that got themselves sorted out of the Internet, and then a "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter". The CD that came with the card installs something called "ATI Catalyst Install Manager" and .net 2.0, but no drivers. I've downloaded the latest (WinXP 32bits) drivers from ATI, and the experience is the same: I don't get any drivers installed. My Motherboard is an ASUS A8N-SLI with nVidia nForce 4 chipset (for an Athlon 64X2, somewhat old), but my previous card was an ATi Radeon X700, so it's been working with ATI cards before. On POST, during boot I see a "Display Card" Device (Vendor ID 1002-68F9-0300) and a "Multimedia Device" (1002-AA68-0403), and when viewing the properties of the "Standard VGA", they match the device ID. Any hints? I'd really hate having to get rid of the card, and I'm sure it's not that strange what I'm trying to do...

Suspected Router problems, [closed]

I am new to this forum. I appreciate any help you can offer. I have been troubleshooting an error with both my WIRED Internet Connection I have 3 desktops running through this working connection (Router) with no problems. Two computers, one laptop and desktop experience the issue. If I connect directly to the Modem, on either, no problem on the internet. Through the Router, my computer connects for a period of time but if ever awaking my comp, or restarting, the yellow explanation mark returns. The only way I can get the connection up = cmd. ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew. This constant command is annoying and was hoping for a permanent fix. Audio is also not working. I know its likely a driver error, but its an old comp we put together and if there's an easy fix itd be great to hear from you! If you need any more info just let me know. Thanks! THanks guys!

ffmpeg - creating DNxHD MFX files with alphas

Hi all, I'm struggling with something in FFMpeg at the moment... I'm trying to make DNxHD 1080p/24, 36Mb/s MXF files from a sequence of PNG files. My current command-line is: ffmpeg -y -f image2 -i /tmp/temp.%04d.png -s 1920x1080 -r 24 -vcodec dnxhd -f mxf -pix_fmt rgb32 -b 36Mb /tmp/temp.mxf To which ffmpeg gives me the output: Input #0, image2, from '/tmp/temp.%04d.png': Duration: 00:00:01.60, start: 0.000000, bitrate: N/A Stream #0.0: Video: png, rgb32, 1920x1080, 25 tbr, 25 tbn, 25 tbc Output #0, mxf, to '/tmp/temp.mxf': Stream #0.0: Video: dnxhd, yuv422p, 1920x1080, q=2-31, 36000 kb/s, 90k tbn, 24 tbc Stream mapping: Stream #0.0 -> #0.0 [mxf @ 0x1005800]unsupported video frame rate Could not write header for output file #0 (incorrect codec parameters ?) There are a few things in here that concern me: The output stream is insisting on being yuv422p, which doesn't support alpha. 24fps is an unsupported video frame rate? I've tried 23.976 too, and get the same thing. Driver issue for 7850 HD Diamond Windows 7

I have an issue with windows 7 implementing the drivers ati provides for my 7850 HD Diamond video card. The video card is plugged in correctly to the PCIE 2.0 slots of my motherboard (p6t asus) with more then enough power. Fortunately the card works as I have my monitor plugged into the card itself and I can see just fine. However windows 7 does not replace the standard vga default microsoft driver with catalyst drivers that I've tried installing from online as well as the CD. Every time I install the drivers using Catalyst Install manager it always finishes with "Install complete(Warnings occured)". I then see the warnings it has which it instead reports that it successfully installed the SDK, Catalyst Install Manager, and HDMI/AUDIO packages. When I check my device manager after that, the display adapter still shows as standard vga and that its still using microsoft default display adapter. Now this current card is replacing an old card of mine which is the ATI 4890 HD which works beautifully. In fact for the old card to work, all I need to do is go to device manager and right click on standard vga - click update driver and windows 7 magically finds the correct driver to install and everything is good. Not so with the new card. I've even went into my regedits and uninstalled every bit of ati driver software before reinstalling my new card. Nothing's worked thus far. I've already exchanged my card out once and talked to customer support from my motherboard, microsoft, and ati all blaming the other. Please help me out!!

SPDIF passthrough not working in Windows 7

Hi, I'm running Windows 7 on a computer with an Audigy Platinum eX sound card connected to a surround receiver via optical cabling. Sound works fine when listening to non-surround audio sources, such as windows sounds or MP3. However, when I view a DVD in Media Center and the SPDIF passthrough kicks in, I can only hear an awful noise instead of the movie soundtrack. Also, the receiver does not show the Dolby Digital or DTS symbol, but stays at Dolby Prologic, so it seems it doesn't identify the sound encoding properly. I could switch off SPDIF passthrough and use the sound card's decoder instead, but that's not an option for me since it would create more problems with regular MP3 playback via additional Stereo Receiver which is also connected to the same sound card. I've tried both the default Audigy drivers that come with Windows 7 and the latest drivers from the Soundblaster website, but the problem remains unchanged. Also, I have ensured that the receiver's Dolby Digital decoder is not broken by successfully connecting it to my PS3 to view a Dolby Digital DVD. Besides, SPDIF passthrough was working fine in Vista before I upgraded to Windows 7. Is there anything else I could try?

Why do most songs in my media collection play twice? - Corrupt media?

Problem: Whether I'm playing the media with Rhythmbox on Ubuntu, Winamp on Windows, or my Nokia N95's media player, most of my audio files (OK, maybe only 40%) play twice. Info: I have a 500GB external 2.5" WD HDD, with a 150GB primary FAT32 partition labeled MUSIC. Inside this, I have about 500 folders containing about 10,000 MP3/WMA/M4A/WAV files. I manage the drive using Ubuntu 9.10, and frequently copy data to/from it using RSYNC, or on windows, TotalCopy. The visual output is different in each media player, but it behaves as if the 1 MP3 has the same song on it twice, and as soon as it ends it begins again. Winamp shows that the song goes for 2x as long as it should, The N95's media player shows the progress bar off the right-hand-side of the screen when it begins playing (then jumps back to the left, then continues along...). Rhythmbox doesn't show me how long the song is, nor does the progress bar move along the screen. Plea: It seams to me somewhere along the lines my collection has become corrupt... but where? And how? and please someone tell me I can fix it!! TIA, Dean.

AMD 700, 800 series chipset. I'm lost.

I've been an Intel / NVidia user ever since I started using computers. Intel really gone up with the prices, and they won't get cheaper. So I decided to get an AMD. But WHICH one? I mean.. not shopping question but.. what are the differences? Like: 880GMA comes only with a single PCI ex and it looks like a chinese replica (no offense). While 890FX comes with 5PCI-ex for QuadCrossfire. Also.. what's the deal with 7xx series? I mean.. its the same price. Yet its older? Or why is it 7xx? Isn't there a single chipset between? Not chinese YET it's durable/fine for long-term usage? What it should know (desktop stuff): NVidia GPU (Zalman AMP2 GTX 260^2 (one card)) Phenom 1090T cpu A somewhat good audio. Any ideas which is the chipset I'm searching for? If this sounds too much of a shopping question, feel free to edit. I just want some clarification on these chipsets.
