• Detecting a Key Press Squashed by Another Application

  I have a WPF application I'm planning to use as an overlay for a DirectX game (specifically Bad Company 2). I'm using WM_KEYBOARD_LL hook to detect KeyDown events so I can bring my app to the foreground when a specific button is pressed. This works perfectly except for when the game is running (I've also noticed this problem with Window's "Chess Titans" so it may be a DirectX thing). As far as I can work out, when the game detects a keyboard press, it "eats" the event and doesn't pass the CallNextHookEx() method like it should, which would allow the key press message to be moved along to the next application in the queue. I'm wondering if there's any sort of work-around to this? It seems kind of unfair that a single application can just willy-nilly eat up messages like that. I'm trying to create it on the fly, sorta thing .. like this... myViewData.PageOptionsDropDown = new SelectList(new [] {"10", "15", "25", "50", "100", "1000"}, "15"); It compiles, but the output is bad... <select id="PageOptionsDropDown" name="PageOptionsDropDown"> <option>10</option> <option>15</option> <option>25</option> <option>50</option> <option>100</option> <option>1000</option> </select> Notice how no item is selected?   Hi, I have the view function in django that written like a dispatcher calling other functions depending on the variable in request.GET, like this: action = '' for act in ('view1', 'view2', 'view3', 'view4', ... ): if act in request.GET: action = act break ... if action == '': response = view0(request, ...) elif action == 'view1': response = view1(request, ...) elif action == 'view2': response = view2(request, ...) ... The global dispatcher function contains many variable initialization routines and these variables are then used in viewXX functions. So I feed that this is bad view design but I don't know how I can rewrite it?

What sites do you frequent that you have found good participation from a smart group of people where you can ask questions that are related to software, but not programming problems? This community also has a vast depth of knowledge about things related to software like marketing, graphics/UI, running a small business, working in bad jobs, etc. that would greatly benefit everyone else. Where do we go to tap all that knowledge? On stackoverflow.uservoice.com there is a popular suggested feature to sanction, or add to SO, a place to hold discussions that aren't about specific programming questions. It seems that the suggestion has been denied in the past though.

• What could make GetCursorPos return incorrect coordinates of {0,0} ?

  We are seeing bad behavior in an application when it runs on Server 2008 (not R2). This is a WinForms application, and Control.MousePosition is returning {0,0} no matter where the mouse is on the screen... Control.MousePosition just makes a P/Invoke call to Win32 api GetCursorPos(). There is a control in our library that calls SetWindowsHookEx to hook WH_CALLWNDPROCRET for our entire process. I'm suspicious of this code, but tracing statements show that we're getting in + out of that hook cleanly. What else should I be looking for? Thanks, Dave

• Why does the ASP.Net Web Forms model "suck"?

  I've heard Jeff Atwood, Joel Spolsky, and many other legendary people talk about how the ASP.Net Web Forms model sucks. (So this question is kind of directed to them, hopefully Jeff is reading) Now, I highly respect their opinion, given their background and expertise, but truth be told, I absolutely LOVE ASP.Net. I think the model is brilliant, and it sucks if you have no idea what you're doing, but once you understand how to control ViewState, when to use handlers instead of pages, etc, it is generations ahead of all the other models. So every time I hear someone complain about how it sucks, I can't help ask the same question... Why? What is it that's so bad about it? I appreciate all opinions. I'm assuming there's probably a post at Jeff's blog talking about this too...

  I've been a bad kid and used the following syntax in my partial templates to set default values for local variables if a value wasn't explicitly defined in the :locals hash when rendering the partial -- <% foo = default_value unless (defined? foo) %> This seemed to work fine until recently, when (for no reason I could discern) non-passed variables started behaving as if they had been defined to nil (rather than undefined). As has been pointed by various helpful people on SO, http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActionView/Base.html says not to use defined? foo and instead to use local_assigns.has_key? :foo I'm trying to amend my ways, but that means changing a lot of templates. Can/should I just charge ahead and make this change in all the templates? Is there any trickiness I need to watch for? How diligently do I need to test each one?

• large amount of data in many text files - how to process?

  Hi, I have large amounts of data (a few terabytes) and accumulating... They are contained in many tab-delimited flat text files (each about 30MB). Most of the task involves reading the data and aggregating (summing/averaging + additional transformations) over observations/rows based on a series of predicate statements, and then saving the output as text, HDF5, or SQLite files, etc. I normally use R for such tasks but I fear this may be a bit large. Some candidate solutions are to 1) write the whole thing in C (or Fortran) 2) import the files (tables) into a relational database directly and then pull off chunks in R or Python (some of the transformations are not amenable for pure SQL solutions) 3) write the whole thing in Python Would (3) be a bad idea? I know you can wrap C routines in Python but in this case since there isn't anything computationally prohibitive (e.g., optimization routines that require many iterative calculations), I think I/O may be as much of a bottleneck as the computation itself. Do you have any recommendations on further considerations or suggestions? Thanks

  I'm kind of disappointed at Ria Services. I like to work in a domain driven design way, so for example if I'm working with an invoicing system I have an object invoice which will have all methods on it to for example calculate total price from its invoice rows. public decimal Amount { get {return Entries.Sum(x => x.Amount);} } I like to have methods to add a new row to validate in data. public void AddInvoiceRow(Article article, decimal quantity) This is functionality I need on both client and server side. Have I missed something big or is RIA Services not for me? (In the whole, I don't like Silverlight restrictions at all, I mean that we need get; set on every data field we want to transfer for example some fields are not public at all in domain driven design but the technique Silverlight offers forcing us to do bad coding.)

• DurandalJS vs AngularJS?

  I'm looking for a JS framework to build an SPA and found DurandalJS and AngularJS. Can anyone compare these two frameworks? I did find many articles that compares AngularJS and KnockoutJS, and they say AngularJS is more than data binding, so I think DurandalJS may be the one to compare. I did a little research on AngularJS, it is good but one thing is bad: the $ prefix does not work when minified, although there is an ugly workaround. And someone said Twitter Bootstrap does not work well with it (I didn't check). For DurandalJS, I still cannot find the samples (http://durandaljs.com/documentation/Understanding-the-Samples/), so it's hard to say. PS: are they working well with TypeScript? Best regards, Zach

• Am I immoral for using a variable name that differs from its type only by case?

  For instance, take this piece of code: var person = new Person(); or for you Pythonistas: person = Person() I'm told constantly how bad this is, but have yet to see an example of the immorality of these two lines of code. To me, person is a Person and trying to give it another name is a waste of time. I suppose in the days before syntax highlighting, this would have been a big deal. But these days, it's pretty easy to tell a type name apart from a variable name. Heck, it's even easy to see the difference here on SO. Or is there something I'm missing? If so, it would be helpful if you could provide an example of code that causes problems.

The problem is that the proxied objects can only intercept virtual methods and will return the return type's default value for non-virtual methods. I can tell whether a class is proxied or not based whether the class or any of it's method has an interception attribute, e.g. [Transaction] Is it possible to write a ReSharper 5 structural search that would warn if any non-virtual public methods are defined on a class with an interception attribute. E.g. • Temp file that exists only in RAM?

  I'm trying to write an encrpytion using the OTP method. In keeping with the security theories I need the plain text documents to be stored only in memory and never ever written to a physical drive. The tmpnam command appears to be what I need, but from what I can see it saves the file on the disk and not the RAM. Using C++ is there any (platform independent) method that allows a file to exist only in RAM? I would like to avoid using a RAM disk method if possible. Thanks Edit: Thanks, its more just a learning thing for me, I'm new to encryption and just working through different methods, I don't actually plan on using many of them (esspecially OTP due to doubling the original file size because of the "pad"). If I'm totally honest, I'm a Linux user so ditching Windows wouldn't be too bad, I'm looking into using RAM disks for now as FUSE seems a bit overkill for a "learning" thing.

It seems Java process do something and began to slowly eat all the resources of the server. I don't know exactly if this could be the root cause. • How can I refactor this to use an inline function or template instead of a macro?

  Hello, everyone :) I have a useful macro here: #define PATH_PREFIX_RESOLVE(path, prefix, environment) \ if (boost::algorithm::istarts_with(path, prefix)) { \ ExpandEnvironmentStringsW(environment, buffer, MAX_PATH); \ path.replace(0, (sizeof(prefix)/sizeof(wchar_t)) - 1, buffer); \ if (Exists(path)) return path; \ } It's used about 6 times within the scope of a single function (that's it), but macros seem to have "bad karma" :P Anyway, the problem here is the sizeof(prefix) part of the macro. If I just replace this with a function taking a const wchar_t[], then the sizeof() will fail to deliver expected results. Simply adding a size member doesn't really solve the problem either. Making the user supply the size of the constant literal also results in a mess of duplicated constants at the call site. Any ideas on this one?

• When do you learn from your mistakes?

  When are you supposed to learn from your mistakes in coding / design? Is it something you take with you to the next project or do you learn in the middle of your current one, sacrificing consistency for cleaner, more well-informed code? For example, my application can be distinctly demarcated down two lines of business -- say one side is for sales and the other is for marketing. Both are somewhat tied together, but as far as the team structure, use cases, developers, etc. the app consists of the Sales code and the Marketing Code. Now, say the Sales code went in first and while good-intentioned, made some bad mistakes. Should the Marketing Code follow suit and make the same mistakes for the sake of consistency or should Marketing architects and designers instead learn from the mistakes that Sales made and developer a cleaner codebase, even though Sales and Marketing are in the exact same system? Basically, do you learn from your mistakes while in a project or do you continue to pile crap on top of crap?

  I've tried to insert a list in a database but I've got some the error: org.springframework.jdbc.BadSqlGrammarException: SqlSession operation; bad SQL grammar []; nested exception is java.sql.SQLException: ORA-00913: too many values (...). The code that I've used: <insert id="insertListMyObject" parameterType="java.util.List" > INSERT INTO my_table (ID_ITEM, ATT1, ATT2) VALUES <foreach collection="list" item="item" index="index" open="(" close=")" separator=","> #{item.idItem, jdbcType=BIGINT}, #{item.att1, jdbcType=INTEGER}, #{item.att2, jdbcType=STRING} </foreach> </insert> My dao cals the method: SqlSessionTemplate().insert(MAPPER+".insertListMyObject", parameterList); Where the parameterList is: List<MyObjects>. My code looks approximately like this: @consumer = OAuth::Consumer.new(API_KEY, API_SECRET, :scheme => :header, :http_method => :post, :oauth_callback => "http://locahost:3000", :request_token_url => 'http://services.digg.com/1.0/endpoint?method=oauth.getRequestToken', :access_token_url => 'http://services.digg.com/1.0/endpoint?method=oauth.getAccessToken', :authorize_url => 'http://digg.com/oauth/authorize') @request_token = @consumer.get_request_token session[:request_token] = @request_token.token session[:request_token_secret] = @request_token.secret redirect_to @request_token.authorize_url Which is by-the-book in terms of what the gem documentation gave me. However, Digg spits a "400 Bad Request" error back at me when @consumer.get_request_token is called. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Any ideas?

  Can I see one example that would make this piece of code compile? public IEnumerable<RouteBase> Routes { get { return new List<Route>() { new Route(...) } } } What would you do if RouteCollection.MapRoute() didn't exist? I'm trying to put my Controller in charge of mapping routes, not Global.asax.cs. public IEnumerable<RouteBase> Routes is a member of my Controller. If the Controller is responsible for a Route, it's a bad idea to decouple the Route by using routes.MapRoute() in Global.asax.cs.

• Replacement for PHP's __autoload function?

  I have read about dynamically loading your class files when needed in a function like this: function __autoload($className) { include("classes/$className.class.php"); } $obj = new DB(); Which will automatically load DB.class.php when you make a new instance of that class, but I also read in a few articles that it is bad to use this as it's a global function and any libraries that you bring into your project that have an __autoload() function will mess it up. So does anyone know of a solution? Perhaps another way to achieve the same effect as __autoload()? Until I find a suitable solution I'll just carry on using __autoload() as it doesn't start becoming a problem until you bring in libraries and such. Thanks.

• Machine Learning Algorithm for Parallel Nodes

  I want to apply machine learning to a classification problem in a parallel environment. Several independent nodes, each with multiple on/off sensors, can communicate their sensor data with the goal of classifying an event defined by a heuristic, training data or both. Each peer will be measuring the same data from their unique perspective and will attempt to classify the result while taking into account that any neighbouring node (or its sensors or just the connection to the node) could be faulty. Nodes should function as equal peers and determine the most likely classification by communicating their results. Ultimately each node should make a decision based on their own sensor data and their peers' data. If it matters, false positives are OK (albeit undesirable) but false negatives are totally unacceptable. Given that each final classification will receive good or bad feedback, what would be an appropriate machine learning algorithm to approach this problem with if the nodes could communicate with each other to determine the most likely classification?

• Kohana or CodeIgniter?

  I'm looking for a PHP framework. I did a research here and found CodeIgniter would be best for me. But then I discovered that there is Kohana based on CodeIgniter. And I'm annoyed, because since Kohana is based on CodeIgniter, it should work similar, but it is optimized for PHP 5, so it should be faster in a PHP 5 environment. I was going to choose Kohana and then I found benchmarks that points CodeIgniter as the faster one. I don't understand it. If Kohana is updated more frequently and optimized for PHP 5, shouldn't it be better then? I'm experienced PHP programmer, but Smarty is the only framework I know, and I don't want to waste next few month for learning a bad framework. Thanks for your reply, I will give Kohana a try.

• How to make an existing socket fail?

  OK. So, this is exactly the opposite of what everyone asks about in network programming. Usually, people ask how to make a broken socket work. I, on the other hand am looking for the opposite. I currently have sockets working fine, and want them to break to re-create this problem we are seeing. I am not sure how to go about intentionally making the socket fail by having a bad read. The trick is this: The socket needs to be a working, established connection, and then it must fail for whatever reason. I'm writing this in C and the drivers are running on a Linux system. The sockets are handled by a non-IP Level 3 protocol in Linux by a Linux Device Driver. I have full access to all of the code-base, I just need to find a way to tease it out so that it can fail. Any ideas?
