  My server performance is poor. At times SSH, top, and other features or commands are very slow to respond, taking several seconds or more. A query that normally takes 5 minutes can sometimes take 30 minutes. The database is mostly being used to do a spatial query (grid and summarize) on approximately 500GB of stored data spread between 4 tables. Restarting the server works as a temporary fix, but cannot be used as a long term solution. Any suggestions for how to diagnose and solve my performance issues? • Deleting MySQL rows causes lock table error

  I had a couple million rows to delete but they can't be deleted at once without this error ERROR 1206 (HY000): The total number of locks exceeds the lock table size So I wrote a script to delete 100,000 rows 10,000 at a time. It ran once but when I run it a second time I get the error on the first attempt to delete 10,000. The way I'm trying to delete the 10,000 rows is to use a delete statement that refers to all 2 million rows but I use a limit clause to affect only 10,000. I've tried adding an "unlock tables;" statement to the script before the first delete but that doesn't help. I still get the lock table error on the first delete. Any ideas how I can do this? Is there a way I can tell it NOT to lock records? I can make sure nothing else is accessing the table.

• Ubuntu 12.04 VPS doesn't boot with mysql in nsswitch.conf

  1and1 VPS ("dynamic cloud server") does not boot any more as soon as mysql lookup is enabled in nsswitch.conf - any suggestions appreciated. Minimal setup to reproduce the problem: install Ubuntu 12.04 / LTS minimal server image install mysql-server, libnss-mysql-bg, nscd configure /etc/libnss-mysql.cfg and /etc/libnss-mysql-root.cfg set up appropriate database tables configure nss lookups through mysql in nsswitch.conf passwd: compat mysql group: compat mysql shadow: compat mysql Now, when I try to reboot the server it just hangs. No logs (maybe due to /var not yet being mounted), and I can't see console output (since this is a VPS). Booting into recovery image and removing "mysql" from /etc/nsswitch.conf makes the system bootable again, so this is definitely related to nsswitch/libnss-mysql-bg. There's a thread on gentoo-users which seems to describe a similar problem, unfortunately there's no real solution described, also the thread is rather old (from 2006) so I'm not sure whether this applies to me at all.

• Backup and restore MySQL database without system access

  Hi guys, I am trying to move a database from 1 provider to another, the problem is that I don't have system access at either end (ie, no ssh), so I cannot use a mysqldump. I have already tried using MySQL Administrator, the backup took about 45 minutes, but when it came to restoring it was moving at a snails pace, and estimating 12+ hours. This is a live app so I need to keep the downtime to an absolute minimum. The database consists of 35 tables, a mixture of MyISAM and InnoDB, the whole thing comes to about 4.4GB. The source and destination databases are both running on very powerful servers. Any suggestions on a quick way of doing this will be gratefully received. Thanks

• What settings to use for fastest reloading of a MySQL backup?

  I have a MySQL database which dumps to a 3.5 GB backup (mysqldump) in about 10 minutes. But reloading this backup on a standby / test server takes upwards of 12 hours. What are some settings that would maximize reloading performance? The most promising appear to be innodb_buffer_pool_size, innodb_additional_mem_pool_size, and innodb_log_buffer_size... but I'm reaching the limits of my trial-and-error approach. Which of these settings "should" be the most important? Through trial-and-error I was not able to get more than 70% CPU utilization and 63% memory utilization. I'd like both at 100% during a reload. All tables are InnoDB.

• Generating the escape sequences for terminal by ahk

  I am trying to make an ahk for putty to send the keycodes that I want for some key combinations in order for my program to work over terminal too. For this I have an ahk already with some key combinations working properly by experimenting awfully much time from here and there, from key tables, etc but I still don't get, did not came up with a clear, logical method to calculate the escape key that I want. An example: ^F1::SendInput ^[O5P It gives 28 in my test prog. I see that for ^[1 I get 377 and for ^[2 376... and I see that there can be used letters out of the hexa numbers (A-F) and also ; and ~ or double [[ Do you understand how this works? Any good descriptive material for this? Thanks a lot!

• Problem with creating table on phpMyAdmin database

  Hello all, I'm running a phpMyAdmin Database on my web package on a 1and1-hosted server. I've managed to set up a database in the control panel, have uploaded all to root/phpmyadmin and changed the config.ini.php file to point at 1and1's database server (because that's the way they do it). I can go to the web interface and get to the main page, but all it shows is the database name and I can't find how to create any tables. I know it's a long shot but I'm almost out of ideas. Also, 1and1 have their own phpmyadmin panel, which is pretty annoying to use, and a 1and1 webdatabase which I have barely looked at. Help and suggestions much appriciated.

• Recommendation for Wiki that supports WYSIWYG?

  Currently we use a MediaWiki installation for writing documentation, but several of us find the markup format horribly arbitrary and awkward, with a mixture of Wiki tags and XML in the text, and the lack of any quick formatting buttons for things like ordered or unordered lists, different heading levels, quick embedding of images, tables, code samples, etc. Sites like LiveJournal provide most or all of this while still generating backwards-compatible markup so it's not like there's a technological impediment here. There are other niceties that we'd like to see, such as being able to pick a category from a list (ala Wordpress) or maybe being able to apply syntax highlighting to code samples, etc. Do Wikis exist that provide a decent range of these features to make life easier on the editor? Something with the features and presentation of WordPress but the page organisation of a Wiki would be perfect. (WikiMatrix returns several candidates, but among them is MediaWiki, which quite clearly is not a WYSIWYG interface except in the most tenuous fashion. I'd rather not dig through each one if it's plain that WikiMatrix is not being entirely stringent about its criteria.)

• SQL Query fields change to uppercase on upload to server.

  Hi There, I have just finished developing an app using CodeIgniter. When I upload it to my Host (Hostgator shared) some of the SQL text is converted to uppercase and rendering the app unusable. In my database I have two tables client and transaction. When I upload the App to the server client and transaction is replaced with all caps. Obviously this is bad as MySQL queries are case sensitive. At first I was uploading with FTP and thought FTP was to blame. I then zipped up the app and uploaded the archive, unpacking it on the server shell. Still no joy. Any ideas on how to fix this? At the moment I just have to go into the server and edit my queries back to lowercase.. Cheers in advance for any ideas.. --Conor

• Converting PDF eBooks into a Kindle format

  Over the past couple of years I've amassed quite a collection of guides, tutorials and ebooks in PDF format. A lot of these are quite useful for work, especially PDF documentation, and rather than have to be at a computer every time I want to read how to do something in Sitecore or to read through a software testing ebook I'd like to do it on my brand-spanking-new Kindle. However, even though there is now a native PDF reader on the Kindle due to the nature of PDF's they are practically unreadable. The text doesn't wrap due to how PDF's are sized and so far after a bunch of Google searches I've yet to find a viable solution to get my PDF's converted into a readable Kindle format. Sometimes these books have code or pictures/tables in them, but most of the time they're text-heavy and to be honest I'd be surprised if there wasn't a free tool to handle the converting of PDF to one of the (seemingly many) Kindle formats. So, can anyone help me out with this?

• Dovecot/Postfix-mysql e-mail Aliases are not correctly forwarded

  I recently set up Dovecot/postfix-mysql on my Debian Squeeze Server and I have a bit of a problem. When ever I send a email to an alias ([email protected] forwarded to [email protected] for example) Postfix (or Dovecot, I'm not quite sure) puts this email into a Mailbox rather than forwarding it to the real Mail-Adress. I have tested all the MySQL queries and they all behave the way I intend them to do. foobar dovecot: deliver([email protected]): msgid=<000001385b464c9a-e40af11e-3bf4-49f6-903d-1d2369f6bfb6-000000@barfoo: saved mail to INBOX master.cf main.cf Keep in mind that normal E-Mail sending and receiving works just fine! I have set up my MySQL Tables with Postfixadmin. Thanks for your help!

• securing unpatched websites

  I have a client with a lot (read several thousand) websites in several old cms solutions that are no longer maintained. Now moving all of them to a maintained solution isn't really an option at this point. So I'm thinking about ways to secure the solutions without patching them. The solutions are mostly joomla 1.0/1.5 and wordpress. What I'm thinking is something like this: mod_suexec to lock everyone into their own home directory apparmor to deny any and all file writes by default. (exclude by default, include things like "images" directories). use htaccess to prevent anything in writable directories from being executed. (aka disable php_engine for images/ directory). mysql triggers to check the "users" tables to prevent adding new admins/superadmins. Does this make sense? Is it viable? Am I missing something obvious?

• so i installed sql server now how do i connect to it?

  SO i have a server running windows server 2008 r2 and i just installed Microsoft sql server 2008. I used the manager thing to create the database and the tables, etc and now i want to connect to it via my visual studio which is on a different machine. so how do i do that? do i need to "turn on" the sql server, do i need to do port forwarding? do i have to modify the iis or change those settings? is there a good article someone can me point me to? just to further help you help me, i understand how to connect to a datasource in visual studio my problem is more with the sql server and understanding how to properly set it up once installed. Sorry for the noob question, i got it all installed and i know how to use it once its all going i just don't know the in-between. thanks in advance dave

• Optimal way to make MySQL backups for fairly large databases (MyISAM / InnoDB)

  Currently we have one beefy MySQL database that runs a couple of high traffic Django based websites as well as some e-commerce websites of decent size. As a result we have a fair amount of large databases using both InnoDB and MyISAM tables. Unfortunately we've recently hit a wall due to the amount of traffic so I've setup another master server to help alleviate reads / backups. Now at the moment I simply use mysqldump with a few arguments and it's proven to be fine.. until now. Obviously mysqldump is a slow quick method however I believe we've outgrown its use. I now need a good alternative and have been looking into utilizing Maatkits mk-parallel-dump utility or an LVM snapshot solution. Succinct short version: I have a fairly large MySQL databases I need to backup Current method using mysqldump is inefficient and slow (causing issues) Looking into something such as mk-parallel-dump or LVM snapshots Any recommendations or ideas would be appreciated - since I have to re-do how we're doing things I rather have it done properly / most efficient :).

• How to fore Word to recompute image numbers?

  I have a word document containing images and tables. These have captions which are numbered, like "Image 1-Example of something". Later on I decided to rearrange some of chapters of my document. However numbering of objects remained the same, so the first image is image 8, the second is image 3, etc. I want to force Word to recompute image numbering so first image in document would be image 1, the second - image 2, etc. Is that possible? Will references (added through cross reference feature) to those objects be updated?

• choosing the right RAID level for PostgresQL database

  Hi, I got an disk array appliance of 8 disks 1T each (UltraStor RS8IP4). It will be used solely by PostgresQL database and I am trying to choose the best RAID level for it. The most priority is for read performance since we operate large data sets (tables, indexes) and we do lots of searches/scans. With the old disks that we have now the most slowdowns happen on SELECTs. Fault tolerance is less important, it can be 1 or 2 disks. Space is the least important factor. Even 1T will be enough. Which RAID level would you recommend in this situation. The current options are 60, 50 and 10, but probably other options can be even better.

• Can I send HTML mails in Outlook Web Access?

  Hi, In my organization some of the employees are located elsewhere from headquarter and therefore they are using the Outlook Web Access (OWA) to receive and send E-mails. The problem lies in the format in how E-mails are sending and forwarded. When receiving an E-mail which has HTML context (e.g. tables) it shows it right enough but when the same E-mail is forwarded it completely disturb the layout and it seems like it only can send in pure text.   We have a server running our web app (PHP / MySQL) which is SLOW. My predecessor says that: "We use to do database maintenance, which use to clear the buffer, cached and unwanted variables." And I wonder what on earth he means with that statement? Does he mean a simple optimize of the tables? Or the query cache? I understand MySQL but don't really know what he is describing. This means, some data is not in the MySQL but in Memcached. So, when backup, the new entry is not in the backup data What is the right way to backup?

  I have inherited an old database which wasn't designed very well. It is a Sql Server 2008 database which is missing quite a lot of Foreign Key relationships. Below shows two of the tables, and I am trying to manually create a FK relationship between dbo.app_status.status_id and dbo.app_additional_info.application_id I am using SQL Server Management Studio when trying to create the relationship using the query below USE myDatabase; GO ALTER TABLE dbo.app_additional_info ADD CONSTRAINT FK_AddInfo_AppStatus FOREIGN KEY (application_id) REFERENCES dbo.app_status (status_id) ON DELETE CASCADE ON UPDATE CASCADE ; GO However, I receive this error when I run the query The ALTER TABLE statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint "FK_AddInfo_AppStatus". The conflict occurred in database "myDatabase", table "dbo.app_status", column 'status_id'. I am wondering if the query is failing because each table already contains approximately 130,000 records? • The very bare minimum of latex to compile documents

  I'm creating a relatively small console program which will be used by some other people as well. As part of its output it will be creating a tex file which will contain some two tables, a few rows of text and one plot. Not, my program is pretty small - under a Mb. The problem is I can't count on my users to have latex installed, so I'd like to include the very bare minimum required files to create it (pdf). What would be a good place to start searching on that topic, or even better, does anyone know what I would need to include with it to accomplish that ?   Hi, i would like to limit the number of concurrent open TCP streams from the the same IP to the server's (local) port. Let's say 4 concurrent conncetions. How can this be done with ip tables? the closest thing, that i've found was: In Apache, is there a way to limit the number of new connections per second/hour/day? iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -i eth0 -m state --state NEW -m recent --set iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -i eth0 -m state --state NEW -m recent --update --seconds 86400 --hitcount 100 -j REJECT But this limitation just messures the number of new connections over the time. This might be good for controlling HTTP traffic. But this is not a good solution for me, since my TCP streams usually have a lifetime between 5 minutes and 2 hours. thanks a lot in advance for any reply :)

• Using my System as the server- need advice

  We are deploying my web application in my system in jboss. And I am planning to use my system as the server as well. There are no html pages or jsp pages deployed. The client requests for resources and the server provides the resources in the form of objects. We are also using databases(Postgresql-15 tables) as the database server(this will also reside in my machine). My system configuration is Windows Vista, 2.3 GHZ, 4GB Ram, 32 bit. There can be many requests coming in at the same time. So is this configuration enough? Should we go with a different Operating System like Windows Server? I have never used Windows Server OS. How will it be different from other windows operating systems? Or if you feel please some other OS will be good in this situation, please suggest.

• Good documentation tool that is not Latex?

  I am far from being a expert in Latex but I'm ok to document my projects with it. Though I would seldom find people in the corporate word eager to learn latex and going along with the documentation. 99% of the cases they would just ask me the Word version of it. For technical documentation I find less resistance, but still, whenever I start a project with someone not familiar with latex, the starting up is troublesome. That said, latex is a bit of an oversize tool for my needs really. My documents hardly go further from tables, lists, few images and type styles (although I'd love to still be able to produce hyperlinked PDFs). What are other tools there, simpler and with a easier learning curve than Latex, but still PDF worthy and with minimally decent capabilities? It also has to run on windows :( Oh. yeah, MSWord is not an option ;)
