• Is OO-programming really as important as hiring companies place it?

  I am just finishing my masters degree (in computing) and applying for jobs.. I've noticed many companies specifically ask for an understanding of object orientation. Popular interview questions are about inheritance, polymorphism, accessors etc. Is OO really that crucial? I even had an interview for a programming job in C and half the interview was OO. In the real world, developing real applications, is object orientation nearly always used? Are key features like polymorphism used A LOT? I think my question comes from one of my weaknesses.. although I know about OO.. I don't seem to be able to incorporate it a great deal into my programs. I would be really interested to get peoples' thoughts on this!

The goal is to monitor incoming bug reports and reduce them, allow never ending features and get ready for scaling 10x. The phrases "test-driven-development" and "continuous-integration" are not even understood by the team cause they were all in the first 2 year product race. Tech team size is 5. • Ubuntu 12.10 desktop/interface not showing on VirtualBox VM after login screen

  I'm having some trouble with getting my Ubuntu to work on a VirtualBox VM. I made a clean installation of Ubuntu 12.10 on a VM without any errors. I arrive at the login screen, as soon as I press enter it does it's little loading thingy and then screen goes black, then this is all I get: http://i.imgur.com/zULUI.jpg I can access the terminal and pretty much all the other features through it, but I would like to have the GUI properly working. I've been looking around the web and looking at various fixes to similar problems, but can't seem to get it to work. I'm thinking this problem might have to do with the graphics? I'm running Windows 8 Pro as host, if that helps, might be some compatibility issues with VirtualBox in W8... Thanks in advance!

• Services or Shared Libraries?

  I work in an environment where we have several different web applications, where each of them have different features but still need to do similar things: authentication, read from common data sources, store common data, etc. Is it better to build the shared functionality into a set of services, to be called by the web apps, or is it better to make a shared library, which the webapps include? The services or libraries would need to access various databases, and it seems like keeping that access in a single place (service) is a good idea. It would also reduce the number of database connections needed. A service would also keep the logic in a single place, but then it could be argued that a shared library can do the same thing. Are there other benefits to be gained from using services over shared libraries?

• Rapid Application Development, good, bad or ugly?

  I have been working for such a shop for the past three years and I know deep down it cannot be like this everywhere. When I think of Rapid Application Development I immediately think programming without fore-thought. For example, when my company decides to come out with a new product, they don't do any type of relationship mapping, no ER diagrams, no round table discussions on expandability. No, the senior developer that ends up working on the product puts together a screen shot walk-through of the application to show to the client. Once the client signs off on the project work is underway by the senior developer. Now you have a senior developer (I use that term "senior" loosely) coding the application in under a week with no unit testing. Well I guess the good to this is it keeps programmers employed due to the enormous amount of unforeseen "features" in the newly created application. Have any of you dealt with a company like this? If you did how did you preserve your sanity?

• How can I give my client "full access" to their PHP application's MySQL database?

  I am building a PHP application for a client and I'm seriously considering WordPress or a simple framework that will allow me to quickly build out features like forums, etc. However, the client is adamant about having "full access" to the database and the ability to "mine the data." Unfortunately, I'm almost certain they will be disappointed when they realize they won't be able to easily glean meaningful insight by looking at serialized fields in wp_usermeta, etc. One thought I had was to replicate a variation on the live database where I flatten out all of those ambiguous and/or serialized fields into something that is then parsable by a mere mortal using a tool as simple as phpMyAdmin. Unfortunately, the client is not going to settle for a simple backend dashboard where I create the custom reports for them even though I know that would be the easiest and most sane approach.

• Which online/hosted bug tracking tool do you use for your own work and projects?

  I've accumulated a lot of side projects over the years, which I slowly improve on over time. Whenever I return to one, I take some time reading over text files that include design, recent bugs, next features, etc... that I should be working on - it's not pretty. I'm looking to switch to something more formal. Ideally, this would be a full featured, online, bug tracking system, which allows for free or nearly free bug tracking for my own projects. Also, ideally this would be doable in a private manner - I don't really want everyone to see my side projects and what a mess I've made of some of them.

• Spotlight on GlassFish 4.1: #6 Java API for WebSocket 1.1

  'Spotlight on GlassFish 4.1' is a series of posts that highlights specific enhancements of the upcoming GlassFish 4.1 release. It could be a new feature, a fix, a behavior change, a tip, etc. #6 Java API for WebSocket 1.1 JSR 356 (Java API for WebSocket) has recently passed the Maintenance Release ballot, this Maintenance Release fixes an important issue when Java SE 8 Lambdas are used (see here). GlassFish 4.1 will include an updated version of Tyrus (JSR 356 Reference Implementation) to bring the WebSocket API level to the latest version of the specification, i.e. WebSocket API for Java 1.1. It should be mentioned that the Tyrus version included in GlassFish 4.1 also brings additional features.   I'm looking for the best AutoCAD 2010 alternative for Ubuntu. Wine's support for the 2010 version isn't polished so I'm looking for Linux based similar programs. I know that this can be subjective so I'd like to know what's the best Ubuntu alternative which has the most similar, and significant features as that of AutoCAD 2010? I'm not familiar with the program because I'm researching this for my sister who is studying Aeronautical Engineering. Any help is appreciated. I'm using 12.04 64-bit on my ThinkPad R61i with 3.8GB memory and 160GB hard drive.

• Where is the Accessibility mouse click lock?

  I've been a user of Linux on the desktop off and on again over the years. I very nearly switched my primary computer to Ubuntu prior to the release of Windows 7. There were a few, but significant issues at the time that prevented wholesale adoption, mostly tethering with my phone and lousy VPN Client. One key component I could count on was the Accessibility features. I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 and am considering giving it another try, but it appears Ubuntu has taken a leap backwards in that it no longer has a click lock feature for the mouse. Basically I need the ability to press and hold the left button to trigger a locking of the button so I can move the mouse by way of a trackpoint with my prosthesis. I absolutely require this feature and it is a deal breaker if it won't work. I've tried the Dwell keys but this is a chaotic control at best. I've never been able to manage a drag of any kind.
