• Reading programming tutorials while at work

  I work in a call centre and have been told by my manager that when there are no calls coming through they're happy for me to read stuff on the internet. There is a net filter in place but I can access SO from work which is always handy. I'm searching for articles that will make me a generally better programmer. I code in Python but combine it with Postgres and JS quite a lot if that helps. I'm currently reading Dive into python3 but I fear it won't last me much longer and would really like to expand my programming ability.

• Why are mainframes still around?

  It's a question you've probably asked or been asked several times. What's so great about Mainframes? The answer you've probably been given is "they are fast" "normal computers can't process as many 'transactions' per second as they do". Jeese, I mean it's not like Google is running a bunch of Mainframes and look how many transactions/sec they do! The question here really is "why?". When I ask this question to the mainframe devs I know, they can't answer, they simply restate "It's fast". With the advent of Cloud Computing, I can't imagine mainframes being able to compete both cost-wise and mindshare-wise (aren't all the Cobol devs going to retire at some point, or will offshore just pickup the slack?). And yet, I know a few companies that still pump out net-new Cobol/Mainframe apps, even for things we could do easily in say .NET and Java. Anyone have a real good answer as to why "The Mainframe is faster", or can point me to some good articles relating to the topic?

• First-time software contractor, building a system for a multi-site client; who should own the intell

  I'm very new to software contracting; this is my first project. I've just built a point-of-sale software system for a client, and neither of us put a lot of work into the contract. I wrote that the software was "jointly owned" with exclusive license for use given to the client. The client is using it at one store and is very pleased with it. The client is also planning to expand to numerous stores over time, and wants to use it in every store. The client also now wants full ownership of the software, with me as the exclusive developer. I am very hesitant to allow this, and I am seeking previous experience. Should I sell the IP but demand royalties for every site at which it's installed? Should I demand royalties for every sale made using the software? Should I really start talking to a lawyer? A couple of other details: in terms of risk, it is fair to say that the client is assuming the risk, but the client is now using the software and exclaiming how great it is (and so I assume, how it is improving business). Also, the software is tailored to the client specifically, but could, with a bit of work, be repackaged and resold to other clients. Even if the client owned the IP I would certainly want to make sure that I then did have (significant) royalties on such sales.

• Right Language for the Job

  Using the right language for the job is the key - this is the comment I read in SO and I also belive thats the right thing to do. Because of this we ended up using different languages for different parts of the project - like perl, VBA(Excel Macros), C# etc. We have three to four languages currently in use inside the project. Using the right language for the job has made it immensly more easy to do automate a job, but of late people are complaining that any new person who has to take over the project will have to learn so many different languages to get started. Also it is difficult to find such kind of person. Please note that this is a one to two person working on the project maximum at a given point of time. I would like to know if the method we are following is right or should we converge to single language and try to use it across all the job even though another language might be better suited for it. Your experenece related to this would also help. Languages used and their purpose: Perl - Processing large text file(log files) C# with Silverlight for web based reporting. LabVIEW for automation Excel macros for processing data in excel sheets, generating graphs and exporting to powerpoint.

  I have to develop a real estate marketing CRM software for my client - where the application is installed on desktop but can also be accessed from web. 2 reasons why they want the application to run from desktop : So that it can work with/without internet connection They don't want their complete data to be online They want to access few of the data like property listing & inquiries (managed from desktop application) from their website through secure login & password. The data that is entered in desktop application should be automatically synchronized with the website application. I was wondering if there is a way to develop this kind of software using PHP & MySQL.   On Windows 7 (32 bits), i have downloaded and installed the windows desktop java application using windows installer of that application. When i re-open application it complains about a missing VB dll. What may be reason complains for missing VB dll and how can i resolved? Any help will be appreciated. FYI: The installer is build using NSIS and executable is prepared using JSmooth, of windows desktop java application that i have installed.

  So due to a recent act of stupidity and bravado, I uttered the words "backups! who needs backups?!" and what followed was the tragic loss of 260gb of data. This scenario in particular is requiring me to recover a repartitioned hard disk, but I was wondering what tools people here use in general to recover lost data. I'm sure everyone has been there, either accidentally rewriting files, resaving an old version, computer crash, hard disk death, user deletes an important document etc. So was thinking it might be an interesting point of discussion as to what you guys use to recover lost data. I appologise if this is considered irrelevant, but considering there has been a few recovery questions, I think this might be interesting.

  I m a Software Development major in an Associates of Applied Science degree in Software Development and I ll have a 2nd Associates of Applied Science degree in Information Technology. I m 37 ill be 39 when finished. I enjoy coding HTML so far and networking and windows admin. Are people my age finding jobs right away after school or should i just keeping going to the state university in the CS degree? I kinda want to work.   Edit: I am not asking how to program embedded systems. I am asking how it is done in a practical business setting. I have searched for hours for information on what software developers actually do. More specifically, what coding challenges would one experience daily (e.g. code examples (although obviously not too large), specifics)? I am interested in Linux based embedded systems mainly, but any software development would be helpful (in the C/C++/Assembly areas). Also, regarding this, a distinction between junior, intermediate and senior developers would be helpful. • What is a 'best practice' backup plan for a website?

  I have a website which is very large and has a large user-base. I am trying to think of a 'best practice' way to create a back up or mirror website, so if something happens on domain.com, I can quickly point the site to backup.domain.com via 401 redirect. This would give me time to troubleshoot domain.com while everyone is viewing backup.domain.com and not knowing the difference. Is my method the ideal method, or have you enacted better methods to creating a backup site? I don't want to have the site go down and then get yelled at every minute while I'm trying to fix it. Ideally I would just 'flip the switch' and it would redirect the user to a backup. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

• How are files (especially audio files) organized internally?

  I try to grok that: Apple is talking about "packets" in audio files, and there is a fancy function called AudioFileReadPackets which takes a lot of arguments. One of them specifies the "start packet", and another one the number of packets which you want to read. So I imagine an audio file to look like this, internally: It's made up of a lot of packets. If it's an audio file which has an variable bit rate format, then every packet may have a different size. If the file has an constant bit rate format, then every packet is the same size. So an audio file is like a truck full of boxes, and every box contains some interesting stuff. Is that correct? Does it apply to any kind of file? Is this how files actually look like?

• Is it possible to put software in a queue to be installed later?

  Sometime I find some software that is interesting and want to install it. At office I use pocket WiFi so I do not want to download big files. I want some how to tag these files so I can install them later when I am at home at connected with wifi network (More faster network).   I donot know if this is a valid question to ask here or not but I have asked this as because i have the doubt In many interviews , the interviewer ask as how much you want ot rate yourself on a scale of 10 in C#, Jave etc. Some says 6 some 7 .... My question is how to judge where I am standing at present? And when can we say that we have mastered a language or a topic. As everything is huge and everyday we learn something.. so there is no end to it... so how can I judge that? Thanks

What is the trick to dealing with these people? • 4D - is it any good?

  Recently I found out that the company a friend of mine co-owns uses 4D, which I've never heard of before. They swear by it, but they're non-technical and what they say about it sounds like memorized marketing blurb. Unfortunately the 4D website also seems devoid of any actual information and is filled with words like "comprehensive", "solution", "platform" and "integrated" instead. Since that thing is rather expensive and uses a custom language that I don't have much inclination to learn just for one project, I'm cautious about it and I'm wondering if anyone had any experience with it? Would you recommend it? What is it good for? What competitive advantage would I gain by learning it as a programmer, or using it as a company?

• Why there are no semicolons and {} blocks in some languages

  I know the question has no practical value, but it is interesting why in some languages semicolons and {} blocks are removed although their predecessor have them. Actually it makes me nervous to write a code in Python as there are no ";" and {}. Also in new language Google-GO semicolons are also missing although it says that lexer uses a rule to insert semicolons automatically as it scans. So is there any secret :) reason for this.
