  I'm creating an AJAX live search on a website I'm working on. Users will select values from a few dropdowns and a list of products will be returned based on what they select. Some possible fields would be: color, model, make, etc. What type of organization of search results do users tend to find most useful? Is it better to lump them all together (alphabatized) or is it more useful to lump them together by make? In the past I've tended to group them by "make" but I'm not concerned that this will continually force some items with a make toward the end of the alphabet always to the bottom of the list. Any tips are greatly appreciated.

• re-partition new drive and use new partition as 'home'

  Linux noob here. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a brand new drive (dual boot with windows on another drive) and re-partitioned it afterwards (with gparted off of live cd) like so (sudo fdisk -l) : Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 * 2048 63735807 31866880 83 Linux /dev/sdb2 1448509438 1465147391 8318977 5 Extended Partition 2 does not start on physical sector boundary. /dev/sdb3 63735808 1448507391 692385792 83 Linux /dev/sdb5 1448509440 1465147391 8318976 82 Linux swap / Solaris I'd like to use sdb3 as default home for all work and fun related program installs and files, but I haven't even gotten as far as changing permissions on it. • All files erased after installing ubuntu 11.04 alpha 3

  Yeah I know I should have backed up my files before proceeding, I completely forgot. Well, the thing is that I had a dual-boot system with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. Yesterday, I installed Ubuntu 11.04 alpha 3 (through live USB). I chose that 11.04 would install over 10.10 on the installation wizard, where I have no important files. However, it overwrote Windows too, and its data. Is there some way to recover it? Thanks!

  I just removed the poll at 10:52, so this is the final result: My conclusions out of it: While the removal of UltraSPARC I to VI+ support in Solaris 11 may hit some of the people voting in the categories "Wait?" to "6 month", most of the users keep Solaris 10 running on their existing system anyway or migrate that late that even the newest system have reached their end-of-service-live or are near of it, so a migration doesn't sound that feasible. So i assume Product Management was right with their decision to remove the support in order to make the feature i can't talk of possible, as i don't think that many of the early migrators are still using the system in question, as most systems have reached EOSL. Didn't thought that there would be people waiting three years and more ...

  Its been 2 years since graduating from uni and working in a IT solutions company as a programmer. My initial year was particularly exciting when we were trying to get a fresh product up to speed. The product has now gone live and are in the maintenance phase. My current day job involves merely bug fixing and also small designing/implementing change requests and also helping resolve issues faced from clients. Slowly I feel a little 'normal' in my role. I wonder how I can make myself stand out. (I work in a company of no more than 200 people) Or what should be the next step I take after 2 years doing programming? Thanks!

• Can we have some "coming soon" text in our app? Will Apple reject it? [closed]

  We're getting ready to push our app live. There's some functionality that's not ready yet; it's accessory, not crucial to the user, but it does provide some interesting context. If I have a button with the name of the feature (e.g., "Panoramic Views") and a "COMING SOON" label stuck over it, will Apple reject the submission? What if instead of a button it's just a text label somewhere announcing "Panoramic Views coming soon!"? I've seen some material online saying that "coming soon" is a no-no but all I could find in Apple's guidelines themselves was 2.9, "Apps that are "beta", "demo", "trial", or "test" versions will be rejected". Which is certainly not the case! Thanks in advance, any help greatly appreciated.

• Ubuntu on low powered laptop

  First off, I am new to Ubuntu. I come from a Windows background (DOS before that) and am loving it so far. I installed it on an older Dell laptop that I wanted to get another year out of. I set this machine up primarily as a LAMP development machine for a project I am working on. The machine is a Vostro 1500 and it has 4GB RAM (maxed) and an upgraded hard drive. I can't watch YouTube videos for long before it starts to overheat and start acting sporadic. I can live without YouTube but every so often the application switching (alt-tab) gets slower and begins not showing all applications and the Dash home quits displaying properly. I am sure I am asking a lot of this old machine. What I really want to know is: are there any settings in Ubuntu that allow me to lower the graphic effects (fade-ins, transparencies, fancy transitions, etc) that would be less taxing on the video card?

• no windows 7 option after recent 12.10 install and boot repair

  Earlier today i installed ubuntu 12.10 beta. Grub wasn't booting, but just going directly to my primary OS Windows 7. I assumed i had partitioned incorrectly, because partitioning isnt my strong suit. I used boot repair because it was well recomanded off a live usb. Afterwards, grub appeared, but i only had options for Ubuntu, Advanced Ubuntu Option, and my hidden windows 7 recovery partition. Please help me recover my access to windows partiton.   Being first to try Ubuntu. But Where are my Hard Drives/Local Disks on the COMPUTER/System Folder in Ubuntu 12.04?! Before installing 12.04 i had tried the Ubuntu 10.10 Version Live and it was perfect in showing my Local Disks. But it couldn't recognize my GTX 470 Graphics driver so i thought of trying the recent version i.e 12.04. Fortunately it solved the Graphics driver thing but now i am stuck with finding My Local Disks on 12.04. I am sorry if this is a silly question, but i know nothing of Ubuntu at the moment. Regards,

• process monitoring in c under linux

  I'm trying to write a multi threaded/processes application and it need to know how to monitor a process from another process all the time. So here is what I have, I have a 2 processes, each with multiple threads that handle the network part, then another 2 process also with multiple threads that interact with DB and with the network processes, what I need to do is that if for example one of the network processes goes down the DB process start sending to the live network process until the second one is up again. I'm using fifo between the DB and the network process. I was thinking of sending messages with message passing all the time but not sure whether this is a good idea or I need to use some other IPC for this issue, or probably neither is good and I need to use entirely something else? • Restricted Flow Of Power

  I'm sure all is fine, but i need some reassurance. Last month my company launched consolidated two of their websites into one new website. www.fdmgroup.com and www.fdmacademy.com into a newly designed www.fdmgroup.com. Because the FDM Academy grew as it's own brand we decided not to just forward the domain to the fdmgroup website, but instead just mirror the new FDM Group website and use a canonical tags to the FDM Group domain (so the link juice will pass to the FDM Group domain pages) The website has be live for nearly a month and i don't believe any power has passed down through the FDM Group website to it's deeper pages even though 301 redirects from the legacy group and academy domains in place. I am also seeing the same problem on the FDM Academy domain, but i expect to see this as every page has a canonical to the same page on the Is there anything which is restricting the flow of power through the site, or am i just being impatient. • Cannot boot Windows 7 after installing Ubuntu 13.04

  So I boot up my computer after installing Ubuntu 13.04. Grub correctly shows me all available boot options and I am able to boot to Ubuntu. However, when I try to boot into Windows 7, grub hangs at a purple screen. I have an HP laptop. It came with all four primary partitions taken up by the Windows bootloader, the actual Windows partition, one called HP_TOOLS, and another for HP Restore. I was able to back up and delete HP_TOOLS and the recovery partition, and change my disk type from Dynamic to Basic (GParted doesn't recognize Dynamic drives). I then booted into a live session of Ubuntu and made two partitions with GParted: one large partition for storage space that I could use between the two operating systems (sda4), and another extended partition (sda3) which contained Ubuntu (sda6) and it's swap space (sda5). It currently looks like this: I'm not sure if the second paragraph is actually relevant, I just want you to know all the variables in the equation. Thank you in advance for helping this poor noob.

• How to update the USB Ubuntu (ISO) with new software

  I have Peppermint (based on Ubuntu) running of USB. Its bascially an ISO image that loads using Grub4Dos. Problem is that I each time I load Ubuntu - and want to use i.e. teamviewer or Firefox...I have to install it on the running live system. Since its running from a ISO image...a reboot means the software is gone. I can edit/open the ISO image using WinImage (on XP) - would you know how I can add extra software into this ISO image so next time Ubuntu loads...the new software is on there? Is there some special repositary director where I should copy the software files into and recreate the ISO image? The directory structure of this iso image is along the lines of: .disk [BOOT] Casper dists install isolinux pool preseed Appreciate your help with this. The software I am really interested in installing is the plugin for LogMeIn (for which I may need Firefox...thus I need Firefox installation) and Teamviewer. Thanks Nakata

• Ubuntu not mounted?

  In Live CD i went in the terminal and when i do 'sudo update-grub' it responds /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?). Here's the breakdown of my drive: sda1 - vfat - Windows 7: FAT32 sda2 - sda3 - nfs - Windows Vista/7: NTFS - Windows 7 sda3/Wubi: - sda4 - Grub2 sda5 - Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS sda6 - sda7 - sda8 - BIOS Boot Partition Also at the top of the page it states : = No boot loader is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda Any and all help is appreciated and welcomed. When my computer boots, it goes into GRUB and has the options for Windows 7 and Windows Memory Test but no option for Ubuntu. I want to run a dual-boot through it.

• Particle system lifetimes in OpenGL ES 2

  I don't know how to work with my particle's lifetimes. My design is simple: each particle has a position, a speed and a lifetime. At each frame, each particle should update its position like this: position.y = position.y + INCREMENT * speed.y However, I'm having difficulties in choosing my INCREMENT. If I set it to some sort of FRAME_COUNT, it looks fine until FRAME_COUNT has to be set back to 0. The effect will be that all particles start over at the same time, which I don't want to happen. I want my particles sort of live "independent" of each other. That's the reason I need a lifetime, but I don't know how to make use of it. I added a lifetime for each particle in the particle buffer, but I also need an individual increment that's updated on each frame, so that when PARTICLE_INCREMENT = PARTICLE_LIFETIME, each increment goes back to 0. How can I achieve something like that?

• After replacing all tables in an old website with divs, what other steps should I take?

  I have designed a website a few years back, and it ranks pretty well, customer is happy, no problems there. I took one of the pages and replaced manually all the tables with divs, used structured data and got the website to look exactly the same. I would like to know, what other steps should I take to improve or at least not hurt this page's rank, or if perhaps I should juts not bother altogether. What are best practices here?
