• What do you name the "other" kind of view-model in an MVVM project?

  With MVVM, I think of a view-model as a class that provides all the data and commands that a view needs to bind to. But what happens when I have a database entity object, say a Customer, and I want to build a class that shapes or flattens the Customer class for use in a data grid. For example, maybe this special Customer object would have a property TotalOrders, which is actually calculated using a join with a collection of Order entities. My question is, what do I call this special Customer class? In other situations, I'd be tempted to call it a CustomerViewModel, but I feel like "overloading" the notion of a view-model like this would be confusing in an MVVM project. What would you suggest?

• Large Product catalog with statistics - alternatives to Sql Server?

  I am building UI for a large product catalog (millions of products). I am using Sql Server, FreeText search and ASP.NET MVC. Tables are normalized and indexed. Most queries take less then a second to return. The issue is this. Let's say user does the search by keyword. On search results page I need to display/query for: First 20 matching products (paged, sorted) Total count of matching products for paging List of stores only of matching products List of brands only of matching products List of colors only of matching products Each query takes about .5 to 1 seconds. Altogether it is like 5 seconds. I would like to get the whole page to load under 1 second. There are several approaches: Optimize queries even more. I already spent a lot of time on this one, so not sure it can be pushed further. Load products first, then load the rest of the information using AJAX. More like a workaround. Will need to revise UI. Re-organize data to be more Report friendly. Already aggregated a lot of fields. I checked out several similar sites. For ex. zappos.com. Not only they display the same information as I would like in under 1 second, but they also include statistics (number of results in each category). The following is the search for keyword "white" http://www.zappos.com/white How do sites like zappos, amazon make their results, filters and stats appear almost instantly?

  I having been looking around for an answer to this and have not found an answer anywhere, I am hoping someone has done this before! I have a form that allows for dynamic duplication of the form fields. The form allows for file uploads and text input, so the data is sent in both $_POST and $_FILES arrays. The the initial set of inputs look like this: <input type="text" name="primary[1][text]" /> <input type="file" name="primary[1][file]" /> <input type="text" class="a" name="secondary[1][text][]" /> <input type="file" name="secondary[1][file][]" /> When duplicated the fields are incremented, they look like this: <input type="text" name="primary[2][text]" /> <input type="file" name="primary[2][file]" /> <input type="text" class="a" name="secondary[2][text][]" /> <input type="file" name="secondary[2][file][]" /> To complicate matters, the "secondary" form fields can also be duplicated (thus the [] at the end of the secondary name array. How can I parse the posted $_FILES array? I have tried something like this: foreach ($_FILES['question'] as $f_num) { echo $f['file']['name']; } but I get an "Undefined index: file... " error.

Each of the created divs need to have a unique ID so I can access them specifically (at the moment, all my divs have the same ID specified in html so whenever I try to access a specific div it just finds the first one). • Is it possible to use an incremental value within a variable name whilst declaring it within a loop?

  Hi, I'm creating function which will read different XML files each time that will contain different amounts of the same nodes. I have already created a loop which stores the ID of each node into an array, and now I want to create variables for each array member which store attributes of the node with each ID. Because the number of nodes will be different for every XML document my function reads, I cannot manually assign variables for the attributes of each node ID not knowing how many to assign, so I have created a loop which runs specific to the number of items I have stored in the array. Inside this loop I was hoping to have something like: for (i=0; i<array.length; i++) { var ID + i + width = exampleheight var ID + i + height = exampleheight } I know this doesn't work, but was trying to outline what I am looking to find out. Is it possible to use some kind of variable or random number when declaring a variable?

• Possible to not use ID field but another column name? in Lift

  I am connected to a oracle database from a scala/lift webapp. I have been able to successfully pull information from the database as I wished but am having one issue. For each table I want to access I am required to add an ID field so that the app will work with the trait IdPK. What mapper class or trait can I use to override this? I have been trying to find one but been unable to locate it. Figured people have not always had an ID field on every table they make that is just called ID... class DN_REC extends LongKeyedMapper[DN_REC] with IdPK { def getSingleton = DN_REC object dn_rec_id extends MappedInt(this){ } This is what I am talking about. • WPF problem modify style of images in multiple Button Templates

  I'm trying to create a control panel for a video camera, the panel has buttons for up, down, left and right etc. Each camera function up, down, left and right is represented by three images (see code below) for the left side, middle and right side. The control panel is circular so the corner images kind of overlap (its complicated to explain this without a visual). When I click on up for example I have to hide the initial three images (leftside, middle and right side) and display another three images for left , middle and right that indicate that the button is pressed. I am achieving this by having a grid inside a button template. The problem I have is that for the corner images for the control there are really four images that represent this. For example for the top left corner the four images would be represent 1. Top not clicked. 2. Top Clicked and 3. Left Not clicked and 4. Left Clicked. My problem is if I need to make the images contained within the Top button have precedence when the top control is clicked or the images in the left button have precedence when the left button is clicked. So it's like I want to modify the left button's image visible property when the top button is clicked and vise versa. How can i solve this issue? I hope i could explain my problem clear.

  Hi there, I have a model Follow that defines a user_id and a followed_user_id. If you've used Twitter, this should make sense. I'm trying to make followed_user_id point to a User model, so I can access the user that is being followed through f.followed_user (in the same way that if I have an Entry with belongs_to :user and a user_id column I can use entry.user to get the user.) How can I do this? Thanks!
