  SOA stands for Service Oriented Architecture and has only really come together as a concrete approach in the last 15 years or so, although the concepts involved have been around for longer. Oracle SOA Suite is based around the Service Component Architecture (SCA) devised by the Open SOA collaboration of companies including Oracle and IBM. SCA, as used in SOA suite, is designed as a way to crystallise the concepts of SOA into a standard which ensures that SOA principles like the separation of application and business logic are maintained. Orchestration or Integration? A common thing to see with many people who are beginning to either build a new SOA based infrastructure, or move an old system to be service oriented, is confusion in the purpose of SOA technologies like BPEL and enterprise service buses. For a lot of problems, orchestration tools like BPEL or integration tools like an ESB will both do the job and achieve the right objectives; however it’s important to remember that, although a hammer can be used to drive a screw into wood, that doesn’t mean it’s the best way to do it. Service Integration is the act of connecting components together at a low level, which usually results in a single external endpoint for you to expose to your customers or other teams within your organisation – a simple product ordering system, for example, might integrate a stock checking service and a payment processing service. Process Orchestration, however, is generally a higher level approach whereby the (often externally exposed) service endpoints are brought together to track an end-to-end business process. This might include the earlier example of a product ordering service and couple it with a business rules service and human task to handle edge-cases. A good (but not exhaustive) rule-of-thumb is that integrations performed by an ESB will usually be real-time, whereas process orchestration in a SOA composite might comprise processes which take a certain amount of time to complete, or have to wait pending manual intervention. BPEL vs BPMN For some, with pre-existing SOA or business process projects, this decision is effectively already made. For those embarking on new projects it’s certainly an important consideration for those using Oracle SOA software since, due to the components included in SOA Suite and BPM Suite, the choice of which to buy is determined by what they offer. Oracle SOA suite has no BPMN engine, whereas BPM suite has both a BPMN and a BPEL engine. SOA suite has the ESB component “Mediator”, whereas BPM suite has none. Decisions must be made, therefore, on whether just one or both process modelling languages are to be used. The wrong decision could be costly further down the line. • Walmart's Mobile Self-Checkout

  Reuters recently reported that Walmart was testing an iPhone-based self-checkout at a store near its headquarters.  Consumers scan items as they're placed in the physical basket, then the virtual basket is transferred to an existing self-checkout station where payment is tendered.  A very solid solution, but not exactly original. Before we go further, let's look at the possible cost savings for Walmart.  According to the article: Pushing more shoppers to scan their own items and make payments without the help of a cashier could save Wal-Mart millions of dollars, Chief Financial Officer Charles Holley said on March 7. The company spends about $12 million in cashier wages every second at its Walmart U.S. stores. Um, yeah. Using back-of-the-napkin math, I calculated Walmart's cashiers are making $157k per hour.  A more accurate statement would be saving $12M per year for each second saved on the average transaction time.  So if this self-checkout approach saves 2 seconds per transaction on average, Walmart would save $24M per year on labor.  Maybe.  Sometimes that savings will be used to do other tasks in the store, so it may not directly translate to less employees. When I saw this approach demonstrated in Sweden, there were a few differences, which may or may not be in Walmart's plans.  First, the consumers were identified based on their loyalty card.  In order to offset the inevitable shrink, retailers need to save on labor but also increase basket size, typically via in-aisle promotions.  As they scan items, retailers should target promos, and that's easier to do if you know some shopping history.  Last I checked, Walmart had no loyalty program. Second, at the self-checkout station consumers were randomly selected for an audit in which they must re-scan all the items just like you do at a typical self-checkout.  If you were found to be stealing, your ability to use the system can be revoked.  That's a tough one in the US, especially when the system goes wrong, either by mistake or by lying.  At least in my view, the Swedes are bit more trustworthy than the people of Walmart. So while I think the idea of mobile self-checkout has merit, perhaps its not right for Walmart.

• How to run a local and external website on same computer with 2 NIC's, 2 Routers and 3 seperate networks?

  Hello and hopefully I can get some answers to my question, though I think I'm making it more complicated for myself than it has to be. My business is a used auto dealership, and I'm in the process of connecting it to the world - via ethernet from the business server [running Xubuntu] to the ISP's ethernet router/modem, so that I can host our own website (no more than 5-10 people probably visiting at any time - mainly paying their bill), as well as set up a web based internal-intranet site - via DD-WRT Router on the 2nd NIC on the business server - that'll be accessed over Wifi from employees personal devices. On the other end of this is trying to offer free wifi to customers that is completely seperate of the 2 mentioned above networks. Quick Rundown: 1. Web Site for Customers to access. I'm going to use no-ip.org for DNS for the moment being, so I'll have a site that customers can access from anywhere in the world at "mybiz.no-ip.org". This will be forwarded to NIC #1 on the server, possibly at an address like "108.69.." as its being provided an IP from the ISP's modem/router, that is from Time Warner, and they allow NO! configuration options. Web Site for employees to access. I'm trying not to use the server too much as a desktop, only for critical situations, so having a backend thats seperate from the front-facing website is critical. This will be the DD-WRT router hardwired into NIC #2 on the server. This WiFi will be password accessible. Public WiFi for customers. The DD-WRT can seperate networks if I'm correct, I just can't seem to understand how to seperate the 2 and still have internet access on both. I've done it before, but the "Public" wifi (with no password set to connect) kept dropping the connection like a problem was happening that I couldn't figure out. So if I could do a little drawing, this is how it would/should possibly look. ISP -- [Sends Public Facing IP of 108.69.*.1/8] -- ISP Modem Router ISP Modem Router (Ethernet Only) -- [Gives Private IP 108.69.*.2] -- Server NIC #1 Server NIC #1 -- [Gives Private IP 108.69.*.3] -- DD-WRT Router DD-WRT Router -- [DHCP Enabled Giving IP's 172.16.0.0/16] -- Employees Network | | --------- [DHCP Enabled Giving IP's 192.168.1.0/24] -- Public WIFI Hope it's not too confusing, but it anyone could give me some good direct tutorials on how to accomplish this, or if YOU know, then it'll be alot of help. • Server-infrastructure recommendations

  Here's the thing: I need a cheap, fast, reliable infrastructure that can dynamically scale (like Amazon S3: cloud-storage). I'm thinking of 3 different type of 'servers'. Application-server Should be able to run CentOS (or another light Linux-distr.) Should be able to run Apache Should be able to run PHP Should be able to run GD (so it does rely on it's cpu). Should be extremely reliable and fast. Database-server Should be able to run MySQL Should be able to... well, do nothing else :P. Should be extremely reliable and fast. Storage-server Should be able to run some kind of file-transfer-deamon (like FTP, CouchDB, etc.) Should be able to do nothing else. Should be extremely reliable and fast. So technically, by transferring all static data to 2 different servers/services, the application-server can totally focus on the webpages. My questions: What services do you recommend? Which is cheaper, faster and more reliable: using my own server, or using some cloud-storage/cloud-computing-service (like Amazon S3, CloudFiles, etc.)? How can I prevent bandwidth abuse (such as dos-attacks causing the bill to be extremely high)? What's the difference between "including CDN" and "excluding CDN"? It seems the price doesn't differ at CloudFiles? Do you have to pay "including CDN" + "excluding CDN" when you decide to enable the delivery-network? Or have you only got to pay "including CDN"? Should I use my own nameserver too or can I use my domain-hoster's nameservers? What are the minimum software specifications of a nameserver. Can I write some software myself? Does anyone have a good protocol-description? I hope you can answer my questions. Answers I shouldn't write my own nameserver-software. Instead, I should use something like bind. • Big Companies Influence Retail in 2010

  From a retail industry perspective, 2010 will go down as the year mobile went mainstream, the economy recovered from the crash, and Facebook surpassed Google as the most influential online property. While the economy certainly had the biggest impact on the retail industry, a few big companies also exerted influence. Here's a rundown and a look back at 2010: Apple -- Steve Jobs and company continued to lead the mobile pack. Consumers are using their iPhones to shop, retailers are using the iPod Touch for mobile checkout, and both are embracing the iPad as the next wave of technology. The Next Technology from Apple Mobile Platforms in Retail Apple Stores, Touch2Systems, and the iPad Google -- Not to be outdone, Google's Android platform grew faster than Apple's, plus they support QRCodes natively and will probably beat Apple to NFC. Google Checkout, Product Search, and Boutiques.com continue to impact the e-commerce scene. We'll just have to wait and see what 2011 brings next.

For a lot of problems, orchestration tools like BPEL or integration tools like an ESB will both do the job and achieve the right objectives; however it’s important to remember that, although a hammer can be used to drive a screw into wood, that doesn’t mean it’s the best way to do it. Service Integration is the act of connecting components together at a low level, which usually results in a single external endpoint for you to expose to your customers or other teams within your organisation – a simple product ordering system, for example, might integrate a stock checking service and a payment processing service. Process Orchestration, however, is generally a higher level approach whereby the (often externally exposed) service endpoints are brought together to track an end-to-end business process. This might include the earlier example of a product ordering service and couple it with a business rules service and human task to handle edge-cases. A good (but not exhaustive) rule-of-thumb is that integrations performed by an ESB will usually be real-time, whereas process orchestration in a SOA composite might comprise processes which take a certain amount of time to complete, or have to wait pending manual intervention. BPEL vs BPMN For some, with pre-existing SOA or business process projects, this decision is effectively already made. For those embarking on new projects it’s certainly an important consideration for those using Oracle SOA software since, due to the components included in SOA Suite and BPM Suite, the choice of which to buy is determined by what they offer. Oracle SOA suite has no BPMN engine, whereas BPM suite has both a BPMN and a BPEL engine. SOA suite has the ESB component “Mediator”, whereas BPM suite has none. Decisions must be made, therefore, on whether just one or both process modelling languages are to be used. The wrong decision could be costly further down the line.   Vi(m) and Emacs are almost 40 years old. Why are they still the standard, and what attempts have been made at coming up with a new flexible editor? Are there any features which can not be built into vim/emacs? My question is similar to this one: Time to drop Emacs and vi? No one had a suggestion, which surprises me. I would have thought that the core of a texteditor is very small and that people brew their own. Perhaps nobody wants to deal with supporting all the modes? Edit to clarify my question: Instead of writing modes and scripts I ask myself, why there is not a much lightweight project, which lets people custom the editor more directly? Vim has 365395 LOC (C lines all included), Emacs 1.5 million LOC. Why is there a project with say 50k LOC, which is the core, why people can use more freely? Perhaps there is such project, I haven't looked very far. I thought about putting together modules from Vim myself and experimenting with some ideas. The core of editing shouldn't be more than 10k? Vim has a lot optimizations which is really an overkill nowadays. Basically I'm looking for a code base for my own editor and Vi/Emacs are I believe not intended to be used in this way. In some sense, its backwards from the kind of thing you'd get from a mouse-oriented thing. I think multiple levels of undo would be wonderful, too. But fundamentally, vi is still ed inside. You can't really fool it. Its like one of those pinatas - things that have candy inside but has layer after layer of paper mache on top. It doesn't really have a unified concept. I think if I were going to go back - I wouldn't go back, but start over again.

From what I've read on answers.microsoft.com and StackOverflow I gather the easiest way to fix this is to perform a system refresh, however this will remove all software I've installed from discs. I've just moved house, so I'd rather not do that as I don't know where all the installation media actually are for a lot of my software, so if possible I'd prefer to track down where the problem is actually occurring. (Also, I have a LOT of software installed. It'd take me a long time to reinstall it all, and I unfortunately haven't got that time.)   When I try to start Outlook 2007, my system freezes, and Outlook says it is "synchonizing folders". I don't use exchange, and haven't seen any answers online. I've tried turning off the exchange integration (right clicking my folders) Since doing the latter, there is no longer an icon in the system tray when this is frozen (there was before) UPDATE: It seems my anti-virus program (comodo) was what was actually locking during Outlook file synch. I disabled that, and things seemed to settle down.

  I am trying to add a new member to our DFS topology. We have 3 DCs (VMs - VMware) running Windows server 2012, two servers are located in or Primary site and the third at our DR site. Currently the two servers at our primary site are currently replicating DFS (full mesh) and are working fine. "import ppm:- | gocr -i - | xclip -selection c" works, but gocr is unreliable: simple text on a webpage has errors. It is a clear font but the OCR tool always misses "r" and replaces it with underscore. "import ppm:- | ocrad -i - | xclip -selection c" says "ocrad: maxval 255 in ppm "P6" file." tesseract needs an image file and does not accept piping input to it. xfce4-screenshooter does not do OCR. • AIX: iscsi volumes disappear after reboot

  We have an IBM P505 AIX box, with two internal disks and a defined iSCSI volume. The iSCSI volume is defined in it's own volume group, and is connected to an IBM iSCSI DS3300 disk array via the secondary onboard ethernet port (ie, we're not using a dedicated HBA, we're using the second onboard ethernet port for iSCSI exclusively.) When we reboot the AIX box, the iSCSI volume doesn't get mounted (which is fine; I've figured out that it fails to mount because AIX tries mounting it's volumes before starting the networking stack.) The problem is, after the server has booted it fails to redetect the iSCSI target as a physical disk. This means the volume group (iscsivg) can't go online. if I run cfgmgr -v to redetect the iscsi volume it successfully detects the iscsi target volume and creates a physical volume reference, but allocates it a different volume ID to what was defined before. eg - rootvg contains hdisk 0 and 1 iscsivg was originally defined with hdisk2 as the physical iSCSI volume. after reboot and running cfgmgr -v, AIX detects physical volumes hdisk0, hdisk11 and hdisk3. As there's no hdisk2, I can't varyon the iscsivg volume group. I can't seem any existing hdisk2 definition in the ODM. I can't easily add or change the definition of the physcial disk in the iscsivg volume group as it won't "varyon". Exporting the volume group deletes it completely, recreating the volume group by "importing" it from the reallocated disk makes it available again, but surely there's a better way? Can I force a specific hdisk drive designation for an iscsi target? How do you bring online iSCSI volumes after a reboot? I assume this "just works" with a dedicated HBA instead of a generic ethernet adapter? By the way, the iSCSI volume works fine once it's mounted; we only have problems getting it working - and only with AIX. The iSCSI array works fine with our Linux and Windows servers; ie the volumes get detected and remounted after boot time without any problems, using generic ethernet adapters.
