  • Rewriting software using Agile methodologies

    - by Asier
Suppose you have to rewrite an entire application using Agile methodologies, how would you do it? I guess you could write a big bunch of user stories based in the behavior of your current system. And then implement them in small iterations. But this wouldn't mean that we have the requirements UP FRONT?? Also, when would you start releasing? Agile says we should release early and often, but it doesn't make much sense to release before the complete rewrite has been completed. Anybody has used Agile before to rewrite software? How did you do it?

  • Sudden Breakthroughs (Miracles at work)

    - by MobileDev123
Lot of things has been discussed that can be taken as negative things about programmers work. Lets discuss about something good and unexpected things that happen to programmers. Example: (After R&D of two days and a lot of disappointments) You just spend an hour with your PM to explain that some feature due to some problem you are unable to release this module in today's beta... after a lot of arguments you are given an hour to make your app work without this module. You sit on your workstation to make a release and all of a sudden you find what turns out to be a silly little problem.... (you solve it and prepare a desired build) did you face miracle (= sudden, positive surprises?) in your life?? what was your reaction in case you have come through such experience?? (N.B. I know my English is not that good and that's why I'm open to every linguistic mistakes needed to be corrected)

  • How to use NVIDIA GeForce M310 on Ubuntu 12.10 running as guest in Virtualbox?

    - by huub
Last couple of weeks played around with Ubuntu 12.10. This is running as a guest on Virtualbox hosted at Windows 7. There have been some challenges with the Unity 3D stuff. Particular due to not supporting X11 release 1.13 till very recently. Since today we are able to download Virtualbox version 4.2.2 which has through guest additions also support for X11 release 1.13. SO far great work everybody. Since Unity now only runs in 3D mode it would be nice to access the graphics card directly from Virtualbox. lshw -c display shows: VGA compatible controller; product: VirtualBox Graphics Adapter. QUESTION: how to get the 3D and other graphics directly supported by the hardware ie Nvidia GeForce M310

  • DotNetNuke 5.3.0 Almost there

The 5.3.0 development cycle has been unlike any in our 7+ year history. In some respects this is good and in others not so much. As I explained in my Just Like Clockwork post, we are working hard to make monthly releases a habit and to have release schedules that are predictable. DotNetNuke 5.3.0 marks the first major release we have attempted since splitting our engineering group into feature development and maintenance groups. As always, doing anything for the first time can be challenging. The...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Is it to late for Windows Phone 7 after the iPhone 4.0 comes out?

This year has been an incredible year for mobile devices, from the release of the iPad to the reveal of the Windows Phone 7 from Microsoft to compete with the well establish Apple iPhone. Microsoft has been hard at work developing the OS for the Windows Phone 7 that will be release late this year, yet Apple will be releasing this summer the new iPhone 4.0 with new hardware to go with it. If we remember well, the first version of the iPhone was a good device, yet was missing many features...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Why would companies allow these practices?

    - by MuduM
Here's a situation that usually happens in some companies: Announce interesting product X. Promise a release date. Release on the promised released date, ready or not. Users discover and report defects. Send patch after patch after patch after patch after patch. My question is: Ummm, what could be the factors that would lead them to tolerate these undesirable practices? So, in the name of quality, what can be practically and realistically improved in those practicies? I can think of time constraints, user feedback, sponsors pressuring the company, lack of money.

  • How to use NSMutableDictionary to store and retrieve data

    - by TechFusion
I have created Window Based application and tab bar controller as root controller. My objective is to store Text Field data values in one tab bar VC and will be accessible and editable by other VC and also retrievable when application start. I am looking to use NSMutableDictionary class in AppDelegate so that I can access stored Data Values with keys. //TestAppDelegate.h extern NSString *kNamekey ; extern NSString *kUserIDkey ; extern NSString *kPasswordkey ; @interface TestAppDelegate :NSObject{ UIWindow *window; IBOutlet UITabBarController *rootController; NSMutableDictionary *outlineData ; } @property(nonatomic,retain)IBOutlet UIWindow *window; @property(nonatomic,retain)IBOutlet UITabBarController *rootController; @property(nonatomic,retain) NSMutableDictionary *outlineData ; @end //TestAppDelegate.m import "TestAppDelegate.h" NSString *kNamekey =@"Namekey"; NSString *kUserIDkey =@"UserIDkey"; NSString *kPasswordkey =@"Passwordkey"; @implemetation TestAppDelegate @synthesize outlineData ; -(void)applicationDidFinishLaunching:(UIApplication)application { NSMutableDictionary *tempMutableCopy = [[[NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults] objectForKey:kRestoreLocationKey] mutableCopy]; self.outlineData = tempMutableCopy; [tempMutableCopy release]; if(outlineData == nil){ NSString *NameDefault = NULL; NSString *UserIDdefault= NULL; NSString *Passworddefault= NULL; NSMutableDictionary *appDefaults = [NSMutableDictionary dictionaryWithObjectsAndKeys: NameDefault, kNamekey , UserIDdefault, kUserIDkey , Passworddefault, kPasswordkey , nil]; self.outlineData = appDefaults; [appDefaults release]; } [window addSubview:rootController.view]; [window makeKeyAndVisible]; NSMutableDictionary *savedLocationDict = [NSMutableDictionary dictionaryWithObject:outlineData forKey:kRestoreLocationKey]; [[NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults] registerDefaults:savedLocationDict]; [[NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults] synchronize]; } -(void)applicationWillTerminate:(UIApplication *)application { [[NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults] setObject:outlineData forKey:kRestoreLocationKey]; } @end Here ViewController is ViewController of Navigation Controller which is attached with one tab bar.. I have attached xib file with ViewController //ViewController.h @interface IBOutlet UITextField *Name; IBOutlet UITextField *UserId; IBOutlet UITextField *Password; } @property(retain,nonatomic) IBOutlet UITextField *Name @property(retain,nonatomic) IBOutlet UITextField *UserId; @property(retain,nonatomic) IBOutlet UITextField *Password; -(IBAction)Save:(id)sender; @end Here in ViewController.m, I am storing object values with keys. /ViewController.m -(IBAction)Save:(id)sender{ TestAppDelegate appDelegate = (TestAppDelegate)[[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate]; [appDelegate.outlineData setObject:Name.text forKey:kNamekey ]; [appDelegate.outlineData setObject:UserId.text forKey:kUserIDkey ]; [appDelegate.outlineData setObject:Password.text forKey:kPasswordkey]; [[NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults] synchronize]; } I am accessing stored object using following method. -(void)loadData { TabBarAppDelegate *appDelegate = (TabBarAppDelegate *)[[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate]; Name = [appDelegate.outlineData objectForKey:kNamekey ]; UserId = [appDelegate.outlineData objectForKey:kUserIDkey ]; Password = [appDelegate.outlineData objectForKey:kPasswordkey]; [Name release]; [UserId release]; [Password release]; } I am getting EXEC_BAD_ACCESS in application. Where I am making mistake ? Thanks,

  • UIPageControl bug: showing one bullet first and then showing everything

  • TableView doesnt show any Data(CoreData) - App crashe

    - by brush51
    Hey @all, i cant read my data from my database. I have an app with a tabbarcontroller. in the first tab the iphone camera takes a picture from a barcode and send the result to another view (CameraReturnDetailViewController). In CameraReturnDetailViewController is the savebutton, and here is the code from this save button: - (IBAction)saveAndQuitScan:(id) sender { XLog(@"saveAndQuitScan button wurde geklickt!"); ProjectQRCodeAppDelegate *appDelegate = [[UIApplication sharedApplication]delegate]; NSManagedObjectContext *context = [appDelegate managedObjectContext]; NSManagedObject *newData; newData = [NSEntityDescription insertNewObjectForEntityForName:@"BarcodeDaten" inManagedObjectContext:context]; [newData setValue:dataLabel.text forKey:@"Barcode_CD"]; NSError *error; [context save:&error]; //Aktuelle ansicht (self) animiert verlassen [self dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:YES]; // Nachdem die ansicht verlassen wurde, // auf das zweite Tab wechseln(scanverlauf) /** TO DO - Funktioniert noch nicht **/ [self.tabBarController setSelectedIndex:1]; } Now, my aim is to show the taba in the second tab, in a TableView (ScansViewController): - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; if (managedObjectContext_ == nil) { managedObjectContext_ = [(ProjectQRCodeAppDelegate *)[[UIApplication sharedApplication]delegate] managedObjectContext]; NSLog(@"After managedObjectContext: %@", managedObjectContext_); } myTableView = [[UITableView alloc] initWithFrame:[[UIScreen mainScreen] applicationFrame] style:UITableViewStylePlain]; myTableView.delegate = self; myTableView.dataSource = self; myTableView.autoresizesSubviews = YES; self.navigationItem.title = @"Code Liste"; self.view = myTableView; } - (NSInteger)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView numberOfRowsInSection:(NSInteger)section { return [itemsList count]; } - (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { static NSString *CellIdentifier = @"Cell"; UITableViewCell *cell = [tableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:CellIdentifier]; if (cell == nil) { cell = [[[UITableViewCell alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectZero reuseIdentifier:CellIdentifier] autorelease]; } return cell; } - (NSInteger)numberOfSectionsInTableView:(UITableView *)tableView { return 1; } - (void)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { NSString *selectDay = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%d", indexPath.row]; TableDetailViewController *fvController = [[TableDetailViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"TableDetailViewController" bundle:[NSBundle mainBundle]]; fvController.selectDay = selectDay; [self.navigationController pushViewController:fvController animated:YES]; [fvController release]; fvController = nil; } - (void) configureCell:(UITableViewCell *)cell atIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { NSManagedObject *managedObject = [self.fetchedResultsController objectAtIndexPath:indexPath]; cell.textLabel.text = [[managedObject valueForKey:@"Barcode_CD"] description]; } - (NSFetchedResultsController *) fetchedResultsController { if (fetchedResultsController_ !=nil) { return fetchedResultsController_; } NSFetchRequest *fetchRequest = [[NSFetchRequest alloc] init]; NSEntityDescription *entity = [NSEntityDescription entityForName:@"BarcodeDaten" inManagedObjectContext:self.managedObjectContext]; [fetchRequest setEntity:entity]; [fetchRequest setFetchBatchSize:20]; NSSortDescriptor *sortDescriptor = [[NSSortDescriptor alloc] initWithKey:@"Barcode_CD" ascending:NO]; NSArray *sortDescriptors = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:sortDescriptor, nil]; [fetchRequest setSortDescriptors:sortDescriptors]; NSFetchedResultsController *aFetchedResultsController = [[NSFetchedResultsController alloc] initWithFetchRequest:fetchRequest managedObjectContext:self.managedObjectContext sectionNameKeyPath:nil cacheName:@"Root"]; aFetchedResultsController.delegate = self; self.fetchedResultsController = aFetchedResultsController; [aFetchedResultsController release]; [fetchRequest release]; [sortDescriptor release]; [sortDescriptors release]; NSError *error = nil; if (![fetchedResultsController_ performFetch:&error]) { XLog(@"Error: %@, %@", error, [error userInfo]); abort(); } return fetchedResultsController_; } At first i get this error when i choosed the second tab(ScansViewController): " Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: '+entityForName: could not locate an NSManagedObjectModel for entity name 'BarcodeDaten'' " The Name is correct but i dont understand my mistake. Here's the code. // HorairesCollection.h #import <Foundation/Foundation.h> #import "Horaires.h" @interface HorairesCollection : NSObject < NSCopying > { Horaires *lundi; } @property (nonatomic, retain) Horaires *lundi; -init; -(void)dealloc; @end // HorairesCollection.m #import "HorairesCollection.h" @implementation HorairesCollection @synthesize lundi; -(id)copyWithZone:(NSZone *)zone{ DefibHoraires *another = [[DefibHoraires alloc] init]; another.lundi = [lundi copyWithZone: zone]; [another autorelease]; return another; } -init{ self = [super init]; Horaires *jour; jour= [[Horaires alloc] init]; // memory leak reported here by Instruments self.lundi = jour; [jour release]; return self; } - (void)dealloc { [lundi release]; [super dealloc]; } @end // Horaires.h #import <Foundation/Foundation.h> @interface Horaires : NSObject <NSCopying>{ BOOL ferme; BOOL h24; NSString *h1; } @property (nonatomic, assign) BOOL ferme; @property (nonatomic, assign) BOOL h24; @property (nonatomic, retain) NSString *h1; -init; -(id)copyWithZone:(NSZone *)zone; -(void)dealloc; @end // Horaires.m #import "Horaires.h" @implementation Horaires -(BOOL) ferme { return ferme; } -(void)setFerme:(BOOL)bFerme{ ferme = bFerme; if (ferme) { self.h1 = @""; self.h24 = NO; } } -(BOOL) h24 { return h24; } -(void)setH24:(BOOL)bH24{ h24 = bH24; if (h24) { self.h1 = @""; self.ferme = NO; } } -(NSString *) h1 { return h1; } -(void)setH1:(NSString *)horaire{ [horaire retain]; [h1 release]; h1 = horaire; if (![h1 isEqualToString:@""]) { self.h24 = NO; self.ferme = NO; } } -(id)copyWithZone:(NSZone *)zone{ Horaires *another = [[Horaires alloc] init]; another.ferme = self.ferme; another.h24 = self.h24; another.h1 = self.h1; [another autorelease]; return another; } -init{ self = [super init]; return self; } -(void)dealloc { [h1 release]; [super dealloc]; } @end

  • Setting custom UITableViewCells height

    - by Vijayeta
I am using a custum UITableViewCell which has some labels, buttons and imageviews to be displayed. There is one label in the cell whose text is a NSString object and the length of string could be variable. Due to this, I cannot set a constant height to the cell in the UITableViews: heightForCellAtIndex method. The cell's height depends on the labels height which can be determined using the NSStrings sizeWithFont method. I tried using it, but it looks like I'm going wrong somewhere. How can it be fixed? Here is the code used for initializing the cell. if (self = [super initWithFrame:frame reuseIdentifier:reuseIdentifier]) { self.selectionStyle = UITableViewCellSelectionStyleNone; UIImage *image = [UIImage imageNamed:@"dot.png"]; imageView = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithImage:image]; imageView.frame = CGRectMake(45.0,10.0,10,10); headingTxt = [[UILabel alloc] initWithFrame: CGRectMake(60.0,0.0,150.0,post_hdg_ht)]; [headingTxt setContentMode: UIViewContentModeCenter]; headingTxt.text = postData.user_f_name; headingTxt.font = [UIFont boldSystemFontOfSize:13]; headingTxt.textAlignment = UITextAlignmentLeft; headingTxt.textColor = [UIColor blackColor]; dateTxt = [[UILabel alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(55.0,23.0,150.0,post_date_ht)]; dateTxt.text = postData.created_dtm; dateTxt.font = [UIFont italicSystemFontOfSize:11]; dateTxt.textAlignment = UITextAlignmentLeft; dateTxt.textColor = [UIColor grayColor]; NSString * text1 = postData.post_body; NSLog(@"text length = %d",[text1 length]); CGRect bounds = [UIScreen mainScreen].bounds; CGFloat tableViewWidth; CGFloat width = 0; tableViewWidth = bounds.size.width/2; width = tableViewWidth - 40; //fudge factor //CGSize textSize = {width, 20000.0f}; //width and height of text area CGSize textSize = {245.0, 20000.0f}; //width and height of text area CGSize size1 = [text1 sizeWithFont:[UIFont systemFontOfSize:11.0f] constrainedToSize:textSize lineBreakMode:UILineBreakModeWordWrap]; CGFloat ht = MAX(size1.height, 28); textView = [[UILabel alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(55.0,42.0,245.0,ht)]; textView.text = postData.post_body; textView.font = [UIFont systemFontOfSize:11]; textView.textAlignment = UITextAlignmentLeft; textView.textColor = [UIColor blackColor]; textView.lineBreakMode = UILineBreakModeWordWrap; textView.numberOfLines = 3; textView.autoresizesSubviews = YES; [self.contentView addSubview:imageView]; [self.contentView addSubview:textView]; [self.contentView addSubview:webView]; [self.contentView addSubview:dateTxt]; [self.contentView addSubview:headingTxt]; [self.contentView sizeToFit]; [imageView release]; [textView release]; [webView release]; [dateTxt release]; [headingTxt release]; } textView = [[UILabel alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(55.0,42.0,245.0,ht)]; this is the label whose height and width are going wrong.

  • pthreads: reader/writer locks, upgrading read lock to write lock

    - by ScaryAardvark
I'm using read/write locks on Linux and I've found that trying to upgrade a read locked object to a write lock deadlocks. i.e. // acquire the read lock in thread 1. pthread_rwlock_rdlock( &lock ); // make a decision to upgrade the lock in threads 1. pthread_rwlock_wrlock( &lock ); // this deadlocks as already hold read lock. I've read the man page and it's quite specific. The calling thread may deadlock if at the time the call is made it holds the read-write lock (whether a read or write lock). What is the best way to upgrade a read lock to a write lock in these circumstances.. I don't want to introduce a race on the variable I'm protecting. Presumably I can create another mutex to encompass the releasing of the read lock and the acquiring of the write lock but then I don't really see the use of read/write locks. I might as well simply use a normal mutex. Thx

  • Automated Oracle Schema Migration Tool

    - by Dave Jarvis
What are some tools (commercial or OSS) that provide a GUI-based mechanism for creating schema upgrade scripts? To be clear, here are the tool responsibilities: Obtain connection to recent schema version (called "source"). Obtain connection to previous schema version (called "target"). Compare all schema objects between source and target. Create a script to make the target schema equivalent to the source schema ("upgrade script"). Create a rollback script to revert the source schema, used if the upgrade script fails (at any point). Create individual files for schema objects. The software must: Use ALTER TABLE instead of DROP and CREATE for renamed columns. Work with Oracle 10g or greater. Create scripts that can be batch executed (via command-line). Trivial installation process. (Bonus) Create scripts that can be executed with SQL*Plus. Here are some examples (from StackOverflow, ServerFault, and Google searches): Change Manager Oracle SQL Developer Software that does not meet the criteria, or cannot be evaluated, includes: TOAD PL/SQL Developer - Invalid SQL*Plus statements. Does not produce ALTER statements. SQL Fairy - No installer. Complex installation process. Poorly documented. DBDiff - Crippled data set evaluation, poor customer support. OrbitDB - Crippled data set evaluation. SchemaCrawler - No easily identifiable download version for Oracle databases. SQL Compare - SQL Server, not Oracle. LiquiBase - Requires changing the development process. No installer. Manually edit config files. Does not recognize its own baseUrl parameter. The only acceptable crippling of the evaluation version is by time. Crippling by restricting the number of tables and views hides possible bugs that are only visible in the software during the attempt to migrate hundreds of tables and views.
