• Building Paypal based membership website - total noob - would appreciate help

  this is a follow up on my question on paypal integration. I'm working ona membership site for racing fans. My membership site has 3 membership levels - free, gold and premium. When a user signs up he/she can gets a free membership on the spot but has the option to upgrade to a gold membership for 4 Dollars a month or a premium membership for 10 Dollars a month. I've gone through the paypal integration guide a few times though and have a vague understanding of how to get this to work. I think the recurring payments option would be fine enough - however I don't know how do I implement this in my system. Like when a user decides to go for a paid account i.e. Gold or premium from basic - what should I do on both my code side and on the paypal account side - I'd really appreciate if anyone would outline what I'd have to do here. Plus when a user decides to upgrade from lets say a Gold to a premium account - there is the issue of computing how much should be charged to upgrade his/her account eg: a user has been billed for 4 dollars and the next day opts to go for a premium account so assuming that the surplus for the rest of the month is 5 dollars and further from that all payments would be recurring 10 dollars monthly - how do I implement this? And in case a user decides to downgrade from a premium account of 10 dollars a month to a gold account of 4 dollars a month - how do I handle the surplus which would have to be refunded for that month alone and changing the membership? And like wise if someone wishes to cancel membership and go to having a free account - how do I refund whatever is owed and cancel the subscription. I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm asking to be spoon fed :( I'm quite new to this and this is for a client and I would really appreciate all the help here and really have to get this working right. • pthreads: reader/writer locks, upgrading read lock to write lock

  I'm using read/write locks on Linux and I've found that trying to upgrade a read locked object to a write lock deadlocks. i.e. // acquire the read lock in thread 1. pthread_rwlock_rdlock( &lock ); // make a decision to upgrade the lock in threads 1. pthread_rwlock_wrlock( &lock ); // this deadlocks as already hold read lock. I've read the man page and it's quite specific. The calling thread may deadlock if at the time the call is made it holds the read-write lock (whether a read or write lock). What is the best way to upgrade a read lock to a write lock in these circumstances.. I don't want to introduce a race on the variable I'm protecting. Presumably I can create another mutex to encompass the releasing of the read lock and the acquiring of the write lock but then I don't really see the use of read/write locks. I might as well simply use a normal mutex. Thx

• Stopping process in /etc/inittab kills spawned process. Doesn't happen in rc.local.

  Hi, I'm trying to execute a firmware upgrade while my programming is running in inittab. My program will run 2 commands. One to extract the installer script from the tarball and the other to execute the installer script. In my code I'm using the system() function call. These are the 2 command strings below, system ( "tar zvxf tarball.tar.gz -C / installer.sh 2>&1" ); system( "nohup installer.sh tarball >/dev/null 2>&1 &" ); The installer script requires the tarball to be an argument. I've tried using sudo but i still have the same problem. I've tried nohup with no success. The installer script has to kill my program when doing the firmware upgrade but the installer script will stay alive. If my program is run from the command line or rc.local, on my target device, my upgrade works fine, i.e. when my program is killed my installer script continues. But I need to run my program from /etc/inittab so it can respawn if it dies. To stop my program in inittab the installer script will hash it out and execute "telinit q". This is where my program dies (but thats what I want it to do), but it also kills my installer script. Does anyone know why this is happening and what can I do to solve it? Thanks in advance.

• Apache doesn't immediately notice a change in the document root

  We use capistrano for website deployments and our Apache document root is a symlink to a particular code release. The deployment procedure switches the symlink from the old release to the new release as the final step of the deployment. We are migrating our webservers from real servers running RHEL 5.6 to Amazon EC2 virtual machines running Ubuntu 11.10 and the new servers are suffering from a problem where Apache doesn't immediately notice the change to it's document root when the symlink is switched. It can take a second or so (and I think I've even seen it take a couple of minutes). It's kind of like Apache has cached the physical path of the symlink for some time. Does anyone know some Apache settings I could look at to get it to "scan" for changes to it's served files quicker. Thoughts: I read that the disks on virtual machines are much slower (since they are network attached storage). Perhaps the filesystem cache somehow works differently too? If so, is there anything that can be done? The website runs PHP code. Perhaps there is some PHP config differences between RHEL and Ubuntu? I checked realpath_cache_ttl but both servers have it commented out: e.g. ; Duration of time, in seconds for which to cache realpath information for a given ; file or directory. For systems with rarely changing files, consider increasing this ; value. ; http://www.php.net/manual/en/ini.core.php#ini.realpath-cache-ttl ;realpath_cache_ttl = 120 We do use the APC opcode cache but don't think it's the issue due to experimentation. The PHP code is in different file paths for each deployment and we ensure stat=1. Here is a similar question that is very interesting: 294107 - but doesn't provide an answer for me. One solution would be to reload Apache everytime we modify the document root symlink. I'll do this if we can't find another solution.

• Ubuntu : apt-get command error

  I work with Ubuntu 10.04 everyday. Several days ago, when I release command sudo apt-get install .... it run very good, no error. I also able to open websites with my browser with no proxy. But, today, I got error. Every time I release the command, the connection redirected to an IP in my local network. I can see it in the terminal window. Several days ago I tried to connect to the internet throught the IP, by SSH tunneling. But I forget what I have done and there is no way home. • Script to unstick VNC keys?

  I've run into dropped key events when connecting via VNC clients, leading to a "stuck key" (usually a meta key like CTRL or ALT) and searching around the common answer on how to solve it is often "press and release each meta key individually until the problem resolves". However, I've found this to be annoying and time consuming to try and solve it this way. Plus on a bad connection, it sometimes will miss the "key up" event for the meta key again, and still keep the key stuck. So I'm looking for an automated way to do this: From a script on the client side or the server side, is there a way to trigger "key up" events for all the meta keys (CTRL, ALT, SHIFT, and WIN/CMD, both Left and Right versions)? Or just a command to release all keys the server thinks are down at the moment? Or some scripted way to at least list which keys the server end thinks are down so I know which key to keep pressing and releasing to try and release it? I've got a Mac on the server end, so a Mac/Linux solution would be needed for my situation.

• X.org - mouse gets stuck on press

  I'm using Arch Linux. Very often, when I click on something, the OS thing sees the mouse press but not the release. If it was a link or file I clicked, moving the cursor would drag it too. Hammering the same mouse button again gives no effect. Usually, if I tap the touchpad (ALPS), the system finally sees both press and release of that, and I can continue working. (This might be because it uses a different driver - synaptics instead of evdev.) As you can imagine, this is quite annoying even for someone who spends 70% of his life in front of a terminal app. This is not a mouse issue - I'm on a laptop, and this affects both the Trackpoint thing and an external USB mouse. This is not a DE or window manager issue - I have used GNOME (with Metacity, Compiz and Xfwm4), Xfce (with Metacity and Xfwm4), mwm, twm, awesome, and wmii. Doesn't seem to be a hardware thing - after rebooting into Windows XP, everything works fine. hal is used for the auto-configuration of devices (as I have to disconnect the USB mouse often), so Xorg.conf really has nothing of relevance. Xorg -version shows: X.Org X Server 1.6.3.901 (1.6.4 RC 1) Release Date: 2009-8-25 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 If it changes anything, the laptop is stone-age Dell Latitude C840. I kinda suspect either hal or the evdev thing to cause it, but I really have no ideas on what to check further. In other words, HALP!#$ This thing is driving me nuts.

  I am trying to get a macports-installed MySQL to use a data directory stored inside my FileVault-protected home dir. I used sudo cp -a /opt/local/var/db/mysql5 ~/db/ (the -a to ensure file permissions remain intact) and then replaced the original mysql5 directory with a soft link: sudo ln -s ~/db/mysql5 /opt/local/var/db/mysql5 However, when I now try to start MySQL it fails. • What characters are illegal in Cisco IOS username secret passwords?

  I am using username secret to add users with encrypted passwords to our switches and firewall. I have been battling with the same switches and firewall for a couple of hours trying to get securely generated hard passwords for all admins. Sometimes, the passwords would go into config, but wouldn't work for login. According to the documentation for enable secret a password must not begin with a number and ? has to be entered as Ctrl-V then ? to escape it. I followed that and still got passwords I could not use sometimes. There was no error when I ran username, but the password would be rejected on login by some, but not all of the switches. They are all WS-C2960-48PST-L. The passwords it didn't like contained back ticks "`" (that character under tilde ~ under Esc). The "misbehaving" switches are running: Cisco IOS Software, C2960 Software (C2960-LANBASEK9-M), Version 12.2(50)SE5, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1) The "working" switches are running: Cisco IOS Software, C2960 Software (C2960-LANBASEK9-M), Version 12.2(46)SE, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2). The "misbehaving" switches are running a newer IOS, so this suggests a regression introduced somewhere between 12.2(46)SE and 12.2(50)SE5. I was unable to find any evidence of this being intentional in the release notes for 12.2(50)SE. • Host name change breaking http? Fedora

  OK so I have been messing around on my development server. It has been a while since I have had my head in linux and I suspect I have broken something. I have SSH running and that is working fine. I also have HTTP and I had FTP running also. Earlier today I decided I wanted to rename the machine so I updated the /etc/hosts file and /etc/sysconfig/network. I also changed the server name in the httpd.conf. I rebooted the machine and reconnected to SSH fine. Later I was messing around with the FTP service (trying to tighten up the user security) and when i tried to connect remotely to FTP no joy, it said cannot connect. I thought that was weird but had planned to remove ftp as we will be using github so removed ftp and moved on. Then I tried to connect to the website but major fail. even connecting to the IP address is failing. I used lynx to connect to the localhost and there was my site so something going on at server level. I thought maybe something up with iptables but I have not changed them but tried adding http but still no joy. • Node.js Build failed: -> task failed (error#2)?

  I'm trying to install Node.js on my CentOS server. I run ./configure and it runs perfectly fine. Most of what I've found is for Cygwin anyway, and I'm on CentOS 4.9. Like I said, the ./configure went through perfectly fine with no errors, so there's nothing there that I can see. EDIT I've got a little further. Now I just need to upgrade G++ to version 4 (or higher). I tried yum update gcc but no luck, so I tried yum install gcc44, which resulted in no luck either. Has anyone got any ideas as to how I can update G++?

• rpmbuild gives seg fault

  I am trying to build an rpm using the rpmbuild tool. I have source code which build binaries around 30 GB. This software for which I am making the rpm has dozens of executables. When I copy only the binaries of a single executable (Eg. init) my rpm builds successfully. But when I dump the entire build to the rpm, rpmbuild does everything but gives a seg fault in the end. • Migrate SBS 2008 with Exchange 2007 to new hardware

  Hello, We have run out of hard disk space on our existing Small Business Server 2008 and simply wish to upgrade both of the hard drives (currently raid 1) - without too much hassle. My main concern is how to copy across the embedded version of Microsoft Exchange 2007. Is there a simple way to copy all the data across and upgrade? Or is it best to backup and do a clean install? - The difficulty is that it's the same server, so we can't replicate mailboxes for exchange. Any hints or tips welcomed!?

  My application has two different modes I am switching between by replacing the two views in a UISplitViewController. This involves instantiating the new views and a new UISplitViewController. I then set the new detail view as the UISplitViewController's delegate. I'm running into an issue where when I replace the view controllers and splitview controller, they are not properly sized or added for the current orientation. For instance, if I have my iPad in UIDeviceOrientationPortraitUpsideDown the view will be upside down when I call addSubview, but will rotate to the proper orientation after a second. In another instance, if I have the device in landscape mode and swap the views, the detail view controller is not fully stretched to the size of the view. If I rotate the device to portrait and back to landscape, its resized properly. • Excel crashes when opening Excel files from Internet Explorer

  I have been running into some issues when opening Excel files from Internet Explorer, generally the first document or two will open fine but after that trying to open a file will cause Excel and Internet Explorer to crash to the desktop without any notifications being given. This doesn't happen for users who are running Excel 2007, but for users with Excel 2003 it may or may not happen to them. The files in question are Excel XML files and Internet Explorer 6 and Excel 2003 are being use. At this time it would not be possible to upgrade Internet Explorer, but it would be able to upgrade to Excel to version 2007 if that would resolve the issue. Overdue Update: We recently upgraded to Firefox at the office which has rendered this error a non-issue; however, it is still unresolved from the standpoint that we haven't been able to come up with an explanation to the issue. Since IE6 is still installed on the systems, a fix to the problem (or explanation of why it's happening) would be appreciated.

• popViewControllerAnimated not working, but back button works

  Hi, I am creating an application based on the Utility template. The main screen consists of a menu with several buttons, each of which creates a different flip-side view. In one of those flip-side views I also configured a Navigation Controller, which works perfectly as long as I have the NavigationBar activated... I can push the view but I have to use the "back" button to return to my flip-side view, which would be the root of the Navigation Controller. The problem comes if I try to go back using "popViewControllerAnimated", properly configured with a button, instead of the "back" button of the NavigationBar. My application crashes for some reason and I am not able to understand why. I could just use the "back" button in the NavigationBar and forget about the problem, but I would prefer to have my own button in order to go back.   Hi, I want to increase the RAM in my MacBookPro 15", 2.53 GHz, Mid-2009. I currently have 4GB, and I want 6GB (and upgrade to 8GB later - I think this should work with my model: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=573906) Now I see two offers: 1x4GB DDR3 1333 CL9 9-9 (149 EUR) 1x4GB DDR3 1066 CL7 7-7 (192 EUR). Both are from the same brand (Transcend), both are labeled "For MacBook/MacBookPro". Now I have no idea, which of these would work better with the 2GB RAM module from my currently installed memory (Running at 1067 MHz, according to System Profiler - but with what CL setting?) Would the 1333 CL9 RAM be set to CL7 when running at 1066 MHz? Thanks, Chris PS Should I expect problems when I later upgrade to 8GB with a different module (in case the same module won't be produced anymore)?

• ESXi 5 network performance is slow

  We just did a fresh install of ESXi 5 on a host that was running ESX 4 before. Nothing has changed hardware wise. After the upgrade network performance is much slower. Even copying a big file from one VM to another VM within same virtual switch is slower compared to other hosts that are running ESX 4. Network cards are auto-negotiating at 1Gbps as were on ESX 4 prior to upgrade. All settings are default and I haven't played with Advanced Settings at all. Before opening a case with vmware, wanted to know if I am missing something or if others have experienced similar issues and found a fix?
