  Hi Everybody, I am unable to decide whether what to use for my blackberry application. I am developing an application for Blackberry Device. This application send and recieves data from website. Thats the only functionality. I wanted to know what the best approach to go with. Shall i use BrowserField and display html in the application?? • Value object getter

  Hi, I've got a value object, which stores info for example amount. The getAmount() getter returns amount in cents. However in various places, we need to get amount in dollar. There are 2 approaches I can think of: write a convert method and place it in a utility class. add a getAmountInDollar() getter in the value object. I prefer the second approach. What do you think? What are pros and cons of both approaches?

• TDD and encapsulation priority conflict

  Hi, I just started practicing TDD in my projects. I'm developing a project now using php/zend/mysql and phpunit/dbunit for testing. I'm just a bit distracted on the idea of encapsulation and the test driven approach. My idea behind encapsulation is to hide access to several object functionalities. To make it more clear, private and protected functions are not directly testable(unless you will create a public function to call it). So I end up converting some private and protected functions to public functions just to be able to test them. I'm really violating the principles of encapsulation to give way to micro function testability. Is this the correct way of doing it?

• How to transfer large amount of data using WCF?

  We are currently trying to move large amounts of data to a Silverlight 3 client using WCF with PollingDuplex. I have read about the MultiplerMessagesPerPoll in Silverlight 4 and it appears to be quite a bit faster. Are there any examples out there for me to reference (using MultipleMessagesPerPoll)? Or maybe some good references on using Net.TCP? Maybe I should be taking a completely different approach? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

• Clear all class variables between instances

  This is probably a stupid question, but what's the best way to clear class variables between instances? I know I could reset each variable individually in the constructor; but is there a way to do this in bulk? Or am I doing something totally wrong that requires a different approach? • Do Scala and Erlang use green threads?

  I've been reading a lot about how Scala and Erlang does lightweight threads and their concurrency model (actors). However, I have my doubts. Do Scala and Erlang use an approach similar to the old thread model used by Java (green threads) ? For example, suppose that there is a machine with 2 cores, so the Scala/Erlang environment will fork one thread per processor? The other threads will be scheduled by user-space (Scala VM / Erlang VM ) environment. Is this correct? Under the hood, how does this really work?

• ModelState.AddModelError encodes HTML

  Hi I am noticing a weird issue when using ModelState.AddModelError to validate input on my forms. The output from Html.ValidationMessage is not the true HTML value but it's encoded value and so the CSS style is not applied to the error message. Example: private string errorMessage = "<span class=\"negative\">{0}</span><br class=\"hid\" />"; ModelState.AddModelError("title", String.Format(errorMessage, "Tab title is required")); The output is shown as: <span class="field-validation-error">&lt;span class=&quot;negative&quot;&gt;URL is Required&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br class=&quot;hid&quot; /&gt;</span> This didn't use to be the case with their earlier beta's and I am not sure what approach to take here. • Paging enormous tables on DB2

  We have a view that, without constraints, will return 90 million rows and a reporting application that needs to display paged datasets of that view. We're using nhibernate and recently noticed that its paging mechanism looks like this: select * from (select rownumber() over() as rownum, this_.COL1 as COL1_20_0_, this_.COL2 as COL2_20_0_ FROM SomeSchema.SomeView this_ WHERE this_.COL1 = 'SomeValue') as tempresult where rownum between 10 and 20 The query brings the db server to its knees. I think what's happening is that the nested query is assigning a row number to every row satisfied by the where clause before selecting the subset (rows 10 - 20). Since the nested query will return a lot of rows, the mechanism is not very efficient. I've seen lots of tips and tricks for doing this efficiently on other SQL platforms but I'm struggling to find a DB2 solution. In fact an article on IBM's own site recommends the approach that nhibernate has taken. Is there a better way?

Is there any way to launch the market intent in a mode that will take the user to the feedback / comments section of the page? I already use this approach for linking my demo to the paid app...   Hi, i've noticed that plenty of games / applications (very common on mobile builds) pack numerous images into an image strip. I figured that the advantages in this are making the program more tidy (file system - wise) and reducing (un)installation time. During the runtime of the application, the entire image strip is allocated and copied from FS to RAM. On the contrary, images can be stored in an image archive and unpacked during runtime to a number of image structures in RAM. The way I see it, the image strip approach is less efficient because of worse caching performance and because that even if the optimal rectangle packing algorithm is used, there will be empty spaces between the stored images in the strip, causing a waste of RAM. What are the advantages in using an image strip over using an image archive file?

  I think of a game as a state machine. Game States separate I/O processing, game logic and rendering into different classes: while (game_loop) { game->state->io_events(this); game->state->logic(this); game->state->rendering(); } You can easily change a game state in this approach. MVC separation works in more complex way: while (game_loop) { game->cotroller->io_events(this); game->model->logic(this); game->view->rendering(); } So changing Game States becomes error prone task (switch 3 MVC objects, not 1). What are practical ways of combining these 2 concepts?

• Regular expression replace in PL/pgSQL

  If I have the following input (excluding quotes): "The ancestral territorial imperatives of the trumpeter swan" How can I collapse all multiple spaces to a single space so that the input is transformed to: "The ancestral territorial imperatives of the trumpeter swan" This is going to be used in a trigger function on insert/update (which already trims leading/trailing spaces). Currently, it raises an exception if the input contains multiple adjacent spaces, but I would rather it simply transforms it into something valid before inserting. What is the best approach? I can't seem to find a regular-expression replace function for PL/pgSQL. There is a text_replace function, but this will only collapse at most two spaces down to one (meaning three consecutive spaces will collapse to two). Calling this function over and over is not ideal.

  Hi Guys, I have an assembly with few versions registered in the GAC. Now, I want one of my clients which uses this assembly (version 1.3) to point to the newest version (1.4) without opening the source and recompiling the client. I saw an article demonstrating a technique for doing so using the application config file (winform application) here is the config file content : <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <configuration xmlns:asm="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1"> <runtime> <asm:assemblyBinding> as you can see, there is a binding redirect from version 1.3.0.0 to 1.4.0.0 for assembly named MyFacade. Now, there's only a Minor issue with this approach. It doesn't work :) I'm sure it's something with my code. Any suggestions? Thanks, Adi Barda

• best way to authenticate and consume web service using phonegap (html5/javascript)

  I am going to develop a phonegap application which is pretty simple. I need to implement an authentication and some simple data transfer back and forth to the phone and server. I prefer to use ASP.NET as a web service and our database is MS SQL but I am not sure what approach should I take to create a secure communication between Phonegap App and webservice. The problem with a simple AJAX request is limitation in cross-domain and I’m not sure if JSONP is a good option. I was wondering if someone can tell me what technology I should use in order to make a semi secure connection which works with PhoneGap (html5, javascript ) and .Net webservice. I understand that it’s a general question but I need to know what technology is the best in such a case. thanks

  In an ASP.NET Web Site project, I've always been able to make changes to the underlying C# code and simply refresh the page in the browser and my changes would be there instantly. I can do the same thing when working with Java and Eclipse - edit my Java source and refresh the page and my changes are there. I cannot do this in ASP.NET MVC though and it is a real downer - I have to stop the running process and make my changes, and then restart debugging. This is a huge waste of time. Am I doing it wrong? What is the best approach to ASP.NET MVC development?

• Mimicking basic fcntl or SetHandleInformation call in .Net

  Tornado enables win32 support by faking Python's fcntl function using SetHandleInformation, which is available via ctypes on Windows. After some other small fixes, this actually works using IronPython on Windows as well (sadly, IronPython is five times slower). I'd like to get Tornado working on any CLI platform, such using Mono on OSX or Linux. Is there a managed, cross-platform, .Net approach that can fake fcntl? • Interpolation of scattered data: What could I do?

  Hi! I need your help. I'm working on a 3D chart in Java using Java 3D. It should be able to display a bunch of measured values. As measured, the data I get is scattered. This means I will have to interpolate the missing points in order to get my surface plotted nicely. I didn't study all that 3D-Geometry stuff yet and I don't know where to start. My idea is to triangulate the points to a surface and then, based on the triangulation, interpolate the missing points. (see this to have a rough idea of what I want to achieve) Does someone have experiences with the interpolation of scattered data? Is my approach the right one? If yes, what kind of data structures and algorithms will I need in order to triangulate my points cloud?

• how to display a dialog if user can't download file

  hi. dealing with php/html/javascript. i'm trying to figure out a good/best approach to allowing a user to download a file. i can have the traditional href link, that interfaces with the back end php app to download the file. however, i want to have the app display some sort of dialog/alert if the user isn't able (basedon acl/permissions) to download the file... does this have to ba an ajax thing, as i don't want to do a page refresh... thoughts/comments/pointers to code samples are appreciated. thanks. -tom

• Personal project in Java

  My first project in java is going to be a program (eventually I have to create a GUI interface but for now CLI would do) to keep track of my books (something similar to what libraries have only a simpler). I need to be able to insert, update, remove, show all books, update, search(by name or author or date). For the design I was thinking one main class Library which will have all of the above as methods that connect to the db and retrieve the data. Is this approach ok? I realize it's simple but it's my first real project and I would appreciate a little feedback. Also, is it too soon to consider reading up on design patterns and database design ?

  I'm using VS1010RC with the POCO self tracking T4 templates. In my WCF update service method I am using something similar to the following: using (var context = new MyContext()) { context.MyObjects.ApplyChanges(myObject); context.SaveChanges(); } This works fine until I set ConcurrencyMode=Fixed on the entity and then I get an exception. It appears as if the context does not know about the previous values as the SQL statement is using the changed entities value in the WHERE clause. What is the correct approach when using ConcurrencyMode=Fixed?

  I am working on a pretty simple web application (famous last words) and am working with Rails 2.3.5 + MongoMapper 0.7.2 and using embedded documents. I have two questions to ask: First, are there any example applications out there using Rails + MongoMapper + EmbeddedDocument? Preferably on GitHub or some other similar site so that I can take a look at the source and see where I am supposed to head? If not ... ... what is the best way to approach this task? How would I go about creating a form to handle an embedded document. What I am attempting to do is add addresses to users. I can toss up the two models in question if you would like.   Is there any ability to mock methods that are provided with RIA Services? I would like to test my Silverlight App without communication to the server side... I see a following approach: create a separate interface; add it to "base classes" for my RiaService; define each autogenerated RIA-method in this interface; insert dependency so that my "functionality" will depend not from the RiaService, but from the interface that is implemented with RiaService. But for this case I see a problem: how to keep my interface in the auto-generated files? ANy thoughts are welcome.

• Android - Adjust screen when keyboard pops up?

  I want to be able to adjust my UI screen on Android when the soft keyboard pops up. So at the minute I have something similiar to the first picture below where I have and EditText at the bottom of the screen and when a user taps the EditText I want the same as what happens in the second picture. That is that the EditText gets moved up and appears to "sit" on top of the soft keyboard, when the soft keyboard dissapears it should then return to its prior state. Can anyone let me know the best way to approach and implement this?
