• Alternatives to ImageMagick for PDF downsizing

  Having an issue with some PDF files not displaying properly in our iPad app. I have come to the conclusion that we are needing to standardize by "converting" PDF to PDF. I have successfully processed this using ImageMagick to convert the PDF to PNG (resized), and then pushing the PNG(s) back into a PDF. However, something within ImageMagick is making photos within PDFs display wrong. Same issue just converting a JPG or other graphic to PDF in ImageMagick. I solved that by taking the output of the converted ImageMagick file and converting it again using GD to PNG, then pushing it through our PDF converter. So my question is this: What other PHP workflows would work with this, other than using ImageMagick for the conversion back to PDF? We are not opposed to a paid solution, we just need something that works. Our server runs centOS.

  I want to transfer video from a VHS tape to my computer with Arch Linux, using a USB capture device that comes with Roxio Easy VHS to DVD, which I recently bought. I tried to plug in the device, and it was properly recognized. • Experiences with "language converters"?

  I have read a few articles mentioning converters from one language to another. I'm a bit more than skeptical about the use of such kind of tools. Does anyone know or have experiences let's say about Visual Basic to Java or vs converters? Just one example to pick http://www.tvobjects.com/products/products.html, claims to be the "world leader" or so in that aspect, However if read this: http://dev.mysql.com/tech-resources/articles/active-grid.html There the author states: "The consensus of MySQL users is that automated conversion tools for MS Access do not work. For example, tools that translate existing Access applications to Java often result in 80% complete solutions where finishing the last 20% of the work takes longer than starting from scratch." Well we know we need 80% of the time to implement the first 80% functionality and another 80% of the time for the other 20 %.... So has anyone tried such tools and found them to be worthwhile?

  Hello, I have a OpenLDAP Database and it holds some project objects that look like dn: cn=Proj1,ou=Project,ou=ua,dc=org cn: Proj1 objectClass: top objectClass: posixGroup member: 001ag member: 002ag System: ABEL System: PCx Budget: ABEL:1000000:0.3 Budget: PCx:300000:0.3 One can see that the Budget attribute is a ":"-separated string, where the first part holds the name of the system the budget is for, the second part holds some budget (which may change every month) and the last entry is a conversion factor for the budget of that system. Seeing this, I thought this is bad database design, since attribute values should always be atomic. But how can I improve that in LDAP, so that I can do a direct ldapsearch or a direct ldapmodify of the budget of System "ABEL" instead of writing a script, that will have to parse and split the ":"-separated string?

  Hi All I have problem while converting varchar type to Int type in Informix. Actually I dont know if the value is really varchar or not which I want to convert to INT. Its a sandbox system. As Example: I am trying to run this kind of Select telnumber from numbers n where Cast(n.telnumber AS INT) between 1234 and 9999 I got this error: "Character to numeric conversion error" If I run this query like this: Select telnumber from numbers n where n.telnumber between '1234' and '9999' it brings a resultset but not in the range that I defined. 130987 130710 130723 How can I convert telnumber to a numeric value and use it in "between" 1234 and 9999 range Thanks in advance.

When I save a Note object like this: note = Note(author=request.use, content=form.cleaned_data['content']) The conversed value is saved into the database, which is not what I wanna see. • Experiences using VLC for video-on-demand streaming? (VLM)

  I'm considering my options for implementing a VOD service. Until recently my choices seemed to be either Wowza or Darwin, but now I discovered VLM, which looks really cool. I am going to stream MPEG4 H.264 video with AAC audio. I'm probably going to use the RTSP protocol, but I'm willing to use HTTP as well (after reading this article). Can anyone comment on his or her experiences with VLM? How does it compare to Darwin or Wowza? Is it stable and worthy of production use? Are there any limitations or performance problems?

(FFmpeg is a popular command line tool for video operations) My project is working well on Linux & windows but I cannot invoke FFmpeg on Mac! I have compiled it from svn source on Mac & I have ensured that it is working properly by running it in Mac terminal.   Rather than running a long cable from my Laptop to my stereo, I've been thinking for a while about getting one of those wireless devices that lets you transmit audio from your PC to a receiver plugged into the stereo. Then I realised I already have hardware that can potentially do this - I have an iPod Touch, and a Wi-Fi network in the house. So, is there some iPod Touch App that will let the iPod act as a Wi-Fi music receiver? And presumably, a corresponding piece of broadcast software for my (Windows Vista) Laptop?

• ActiveRecord model with datetime stamp with timezone support attribute.

  Rails is great that it will support timezone overall in the application with Time.zone. I need to be able to support the timezone a user selects for a record. The user will be able to select date, time, and timezone for the record and I would like all calculations to be done with respect to the user selected timezone. My question is what is the best practice to handle user selected timezones. The model is using a time_zone_select and datetime_select for two different attributes timezone and scheduled_at. When the model saves, the scheduled_at attribute gets converted to the locally defined Time.zone. When a user goes back to edit the scheduled_at attribute with the datetime_select the datetime is set to the converted Time.zone timezone and not the timezone attribute. Is there a nice way to handle to the conversion to the user selected timezone?

An explicit conversion exists (are you missing a cast?)". I don't know why. Previous I used VisualStudio 2010 but my trial has expired. Is there any hope to run this on SharpDevelop?

  I am looking for some SQL varchar comparison function like C# string.compare (we can ignore case for now, should return zero when the character expression are same and a non zero expression when they are different) Basically I have some alphanumeric column in one table which needs to be verified in another table. I cannot do select A.col1 - B.col1 from (query) as "-" operator cannot be applied on character expressions I cannot cast my expression as int (and then do a difference/subtraction) as it fails select cast ('ASXT000R' as int) Conversion failed when converting varchar 'ASXT000R' to int Soundex would not do it as soundex is same for 2 similar strings Difference would not do it as select difference('abc','ABC') = 4 (as per msdn, difference is the difference in the soundex of 2 character expressions and difference =4 implies least different) Is there any other way of doing it ?

But what if, we are inside of base class then how can we call derived class's functions. Now lets think Graph function calls addedge. Graph(string str){ addedge(str,str); } When it calls addedge, even if the function is virtual, it calls Graph::edge. What i want is, to call Direct::addedge. How can it be done?

• Which video types are considered secure/trusted by Windows Vista Media Center?

  I've been working to set up a Windows Vista Media Center and I noticed that when I play certain DVDs, the video is scrambled. After watching this video, I think it is because Windows Vista considers Component Cables to be untrusted and therefore scrambles the video. The video says that VGA is a trusted video type, but I was curious of which other types are trusted? If I were to use a DVI to HDMI cable, would that be trusted? Edit: Scrambled as in: The video looks like a rainbow checkerboard. The audio plays as expected. I'm using component cables for the connection to my TV.

• Apache only transferring partial content from a Samba share

  I have an Apache server running on CentOS 5.3. It currently hosts 12 sites with no known issues. (I say this to point out that up to this point my Apache installation has performed flawlessly) I'm adding a new site where the DocumentRoot of the new VirtualHost is a Samba share. When at the command line of the server I can cp video.m4v ~ and the whole file is copied properly to my home directory. But when I try to access the file from IE/Firefox/Safari/Chrome it only passes back a partial result of 33k. The same thing is happening with my image and audio files. If I make the files local to the server by copying them from the share and then serving them up then the files transfer. Any ideas?

• Can I set a property on an object that is only declared on the instance type, when I don't know the

  Let me explain. I have a List into which I am adding various ASP.NET controls. I then wish to loop through the list and set a CssClass, however not every Control supports the property CssClass. What I would like to do is test if the underlying instance type supports the CssClass property and set it, but I'm not sure how to do the conversion prior to setting the property since I don't know the type of each Control object. I know that I can use typeof or x.GetType(), but I'm not sure how to use these to convert the controls back to the instance type in order to test for and then set the property. Actually I seem to have solved this, so I thought that I would post the code here for others. foreach (Control c in controlList) { PropertyInfo pi = c.GetType().GetProperty("CssClass"); if (pi != null) pi.SetValue(c, "desired_css_class", null); } I hope that this helps someone else as I has taken me hours to research these 2 lines of code.   Ok I've just ran into this and I was only supposed to be checking my emails however I've ended up watching this (and not far off subscribing to TekPub). http://tekpub.com/production/starter Now these app is a great starting point, but it raises one issue for me and the development process I've been shown to follow (rightly or wrongly). There is no conversion from the LinqToSql object when passing data to the view. Are there any negitives to this? The main one I can see is with validation, does this cause issues when using MVC's built in validation as this is somthing we use extensivly. Because we are using the built in objects generated by LinqToSql how would one go about adding validation, like [Required(ErrorMessage="Name is Required")] public string Name {get;set;} Interested to understand the benifits of this methodology and any negitives that, should we take it on, experiance through the development process.

• sound volume increase beyond 100% whenever possible on linux

  Some audio output from files or streams is too low. It is obvious that hardware is able to play the same sounds but louder but because of the data it just plays it at some low level even at 100% volume. Vlc can generally increase the volume of a file up to 200%. Is there a way to do the same thing VLC does system-wide and if possible for an arbitrary v percentage value. If there is no application that does this, where should i look into for libs to do it myself or what code should i modify(eg code in the alsamixer) thank you Note: Asked the same thing on stackoverflow and they directed me here.

  As a embedded systems programmer I always need to make lots of base conversions (dec to hex, hex to bin and so on...), and I must admit: Windows 7 calculator is a good calc, but too limited in my point of view. I work a lot with communications protocols and it`s common to need some base conversion in this field of knowledge. I`m looking for a calculator software (not a hardware one), to help with base conversions, but it must also support scientific calc. Can anyone help on this?
