  • Data Warehouse ETL slow - change primary key in dimension?

    - by Jubbles
I have a working MySQL data warehouse that is organized as a star schema and I am using Talend Open Studio for Data Integration 5.1 to create the ETL process. I would like this process to run once per day. I have estimated that one of the dimension tables (dimUser) will have approximately 2 million records and 23 columns. I created a small test ETL process in Talend that worked, but given the amount of data that may need to be updated daily, the current performance will not cut it. It takes the ETL process four minutes to UPDATE or INSERT 100 records to dimUser. If I assumed a linear relationship between the count of records and the amount of time to UPDATE or INSERT, then there is no way the ETL can finish in 3-4 hours (my hope), let alone one day. Since I'm unfamiliar with Java, I wrote the ETL as a Python script and ran into the same problem. Although, I did discover that if I did only INSERT, the process went much faster. I am pretty sure that the bottleneck is caused by the UPDATE statements. The primary key in dimUser is an auto-increment integer. My friend suggested that I scrap this primary key and replace it with a multi-field primary key (in my case, 2-3 fields). Before I rip the test data out of my warehouse and change the schema, can anyone provide suggestions or guidelines related to the design of the data warehouse the ETL process how realistic it is to have an ETL process INSERT or UPDATE a few million records each day will my friend's suggestion significantly help If you need any further information, just let me know and I'll post it. UPDATE - additional information: mysql> describe dimUser; Field Type Null Key Default Extra user_key int(10) unsigned NO PRI NULL auto_increment id_A int(10) unsigned NO NULL id_B int(10) unsigned NO NULL field_4 tinyint(4) unsigned NO 0 field_5 varchar(50) YES NULL city varchar(50) YES NULL state varchar(2) YES NULL country varchar(50) YES NULL zip_code varchar(10) NO 99999 field_10 tinyint(1) NO 0 field_11 tinyint(1) NO 0 field_12 tinyint(1) NO 0 field_13 tinyint(1) NO 1 field_14 tinyint(1) NO 0 field_15 tinyint(1) NO 0 field_16 tinyint(1) NO 0 field_17 tinyint(1) NO 1 field_18 tinyint(1) NO 0 field_19 tinyint(1) NO 0 field_20 tinyint(1) NO 0 create_date datetime NO 2012-01-01 00:00:00 last_update datetime NO 2012-01-01 00:00:00 run_id int(10) unsigned NO 999 I used a surrogate key because I had read that it was good practice. Since, from a business perspective, I want to keep aware of potential fraudulent activity (say for 200 days a user is associated with state X and then the next day they are associated with state Y - they could have moved or their account could have been compromised), so that is why geographic data is kept. The field id_B may have a few distinct values of id_A associated with it, but I am interested in knowing distinct (id_A, id_B) tuples. In the context of this information, my friend suggested that something like (id_A, id_B, zip_code) be the primary key. For the large majority of daily ETL processes (80%), I only expect the following fields to be updated for existing records: field_10 - field_14, last_update, and run_id (this field is a foreign key to my etlLog table and is used for ETL auditing purposes).

  • How to handle screen orientation change when progress dialog and background thread active?

    - by Heikki Toivonen
    My program does some network activity in a background thread. Before starting, it pops up a progress dialog. The dialog is dismissed on the handler. This all works fine, except when screen orientation changes while the dialog is up (and the background thread is going). At this point the app either crashes, or deadlocks, or gets into a weird stage where the app does not work at all until all the threads have been killed. How can I handle the screen orientation change gracefully? The sample code below matches roughly what my real program does: public class MyAct extends Activity implements Runnable { public ProgressDialog mProgress; // UI has a button that when pressed calls send public void send() { mProgress = ProgressDialog.show(this, "Please wait", "Please wait", true, true); Thread thread = new Thread(this); thread.start(); } public void run() { Thread.sleep(10000); Message msg = new Message(); mHandler.sendMessage(msg); } private final Handler mHandler = new Handler() { @Override public void handleMessage(Message msg) { mProgress.dismiss(); } }; } Stack: E/WindowManager( 244): Activity MyAct has leaked window com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow$DecorView@433b7150 that was originally added here E/WindowManager( 244): android.view.WindowLeaked: Activity MyAct has leaked window com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow$DecorView@433b7150 that was originally added here E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewRoot.<init>(ViewRoot.java:178) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.WindowManagerImpl.addView(WindowManagerImpl.java:147) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.WindowManagerImpl.addView(WindowManagerImpl.java:90) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.Window$LocalWindowManager.addView(Window.java:393) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.app.Dialog.show(Dialog.java:212) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.app.ProgressDialog.show(ProgressDialog.java:103) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.app.ProgressDialog.show(ProgressDialog.java:91) E/WindowManager( 244): at MyAct.send(MyAct.java:294) E/WindowManager( 244): at MyAct$4.onClick(MyAct.java:174) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.View.performClick(View.java:2129) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.View.onTouchEvent(View.java:3543) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.widget.TextView.onTouchEvent(TextView.java:4664) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.View.dispatchTouchEvent(View.java:3198) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:857) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:857) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:857) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:857) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:857) E/WindowManager( 244): at com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow$DecorView.superDispatchTouchEvent(PhoneWindow.java:1593) E/WindowManager( 244): at com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow.superDispatchTouchEvent(PhoneWindow.java:1089) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.app.Activity.dispatchTouchEvent(Activity.java:1871) E/WindowManager( 244): at com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow$DecorView.dispatchTouchEvent(PhoneWindow.java:1577) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewRoot.handleMessage(ViewRoot.java:1140) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:88) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:3739) E/WindowManager( 244): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) E/WindowManager( 244): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:515) E/WindowManager( 244): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:739) E/WindowManager( 244): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:497) E/WindowManager( 244): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method) and: W/dalvikvm( 244): threadid=3: thread exiting with uncaught exception (group=0x4000fe68) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): Uncaught handler: thread main exiting due to uncaught exception E/AndroidRuntime( 244): java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: View not attached to window manager E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.view.WindowManagerImpl.findViewLocked(WindowManagerImpl.java:331) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.view.WindowManagerImpl.removeView(WindowManagerImpl.java:200) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.view.Window$LocalWindowManager.removeView(Window.java:401) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.app.Dialog.dismissDialog(Dialog.java:249) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.app.Dialog.access$000(Dialog.java:59) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.app.Dialog$1.run(Dialog.java:93) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.app.Dialog.dismiss(Dialog.java:233) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at MyAct$1.handleMessage(MyAct.java:321) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:88) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:3739) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:515) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:739) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:497) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method) I/Process ( 46): Sending signal.   • How to change Matlab program for solving equation with finite element method?

    - by DSblizzard
I don't know is this question more related to mathematics or programming and I'm absolute newbie in Matlab. Program FEM_50 applies the finite element method to Laplace's equation -Uxx(x, y) - Uyy(x, y) = F(x, y) in Omega. How to change it to apply FEM to equation -Uxx(x, y) - Uyy(x, y) + U(x, y) = F(x, y)? At this page: http://sc.fsu.edu/~burkardt/m_src/fem_50/fem_50.html additional code files in case you need them. function fem_50 ( ) %% FEM_50 applies the finite element method to Laplace's equation. % % Discussion: % % FEM_50 is a set of MATLAB routines to apply the finite % element method to solving Laplace's equation in an arbitrary % region, using about 50 lines of MATLAB code. % % FEM_50 is partly a demonstration, to show how little it % takes to implement the finite element method (at least using % every possible MATLAB shortcut.) The user supplies datafiles % that specify the geometry of the region and its arrangement % into triangular and quadrilateral elements, and the location % and type of the boundary conditions, which can be any mixture % of Neumann and Dirichlet. % % The unknown state variable U(x,y) is assumed to satisfy % Laplace's equation: % -Uxx(x,y) - Uyy(x,y) = F(x,y) in Omega % with Dirichlet boundary conditions % U(x,y) = U_D(x,y) on Gamma_D % and Neumann boundary conditions on the outward normal derivative: % Un(x,y) = G(x,y) on Gamma_N % If Gamma designates the boundary of the region Omega, % then we presume that % Gamma = Gamma_D + Gamma_N % but the user is free to determine which boundary conditions to % apply. Note, however, that the problem will generally be singular % unless at least one Dirichlet boundary condition is specified. % % The code uses piecewise linear basis functions for triangular elements, % and piecewise isoparametric bilinear basis functions for quadrilateral % elements. % % The user is required to supply a number of data files and MATLAB % functions that specify the location of nodes, the grouping of nodes % into elements, the location and value of boundary conditions, and % the right hand side function in Laplace's equation. Note that the % fact that the geometry is completely up to the user means that % just about any two dimensional region can be handled, with arbitrary % shape, including holes and islands. % clear % % Read the nodal coordinate data file. % load coordinates.dat; % % Read the triangular element data file. % load elements3.dat; % % Read the quadrilateral element data file. % load elements4.dat; % % Read the Neumann boundary condition data file. % I THINK the purpose of the EVAL command is to create an empty NEUMANN array % if no Neumann file is found. % eval ( 'load neumann.dat;', 'neumann=[];' ); % % Read the Dirichlet boundary condition data file. % load dirichlet.dat; A = sparse ( size(coordinates,1), size(coordinates,1) ); b = sparse ( size(coordinates,1), 1 ); % % Assembly. % for j = 1 : size(elements3,1) A(elements3(j,:),elements3(j,:)) = A(elements3(j,:),elements3(j,:)) ... + stima3(coordinates(elements3(j,:),:)); end for j = 1 : size(elements4,1) A(elements4(j,:),elements4(j,:)) = A(elements4(j,:),elements4(j,:)) ... + stima4(coordinates(elements4(j,:),:)); end % % Volume Forces. % for j = 1 : size(elements3,1) b(elements3(j,:)) = b(elements3(j,:)) ... + det( [1,1,1; coordinates(elements3(j,:),:)'] ) * ... f(sum(coordinates(elements3(j,:),:))/3)/6; end for j = 1 : size(elements4,1) b(elements4(j,:)) = b(elements4(j,:)) ... + det([1,1,1; coordinates(elements4(j,1:3),:)'] ) * ... f(sum(coordinates(elements4(j,:),:))/4)/4; end % % Neumann conditions. % if ( ~isempty(neumann) ) for j = 1 : size(neumann,1) b(neumann(j,:)) = b(neumann(j,:)) + ... norm(coordinates(neumann(j,1),:) - coordinates(neumann(j,2),:)) * ... g(sum(coordinates(neumann(j,:),:))/2)/2; end end % % Determine which nodes are associated with Dirichlet conditions. % Assign the corresponding entries of U, and adjust the right hand side. % u = sparse ( size(coordinates,1), 1 ); BoundNodes = unique ( dirichlet ); u(BoundNodes) = u_d ( coordinates(BoundNodes,:) ); b = b - A * u; % % Compute the solution by solving A * U = B for the remaining unknown values of U. % FreeNodes = setdiff ( 1:size(coordinates,1), BoundNodes ); u(FreeNodes) = A(FreeNodes,FreeNodes) \ b(FreeNodes); % % Graphic representation. % show ( elements3, elements4, coordinates, full ( u ) ); return end

  • Can we add new attribute or change type of existing attribute to a "Referenced Element"?

    - by JSteve
    In my XML schema I have an element being referenced tens of times by other elements but with different enumerated values for one of its attribute. For now, instead of creating this element in global space and referencing it later, I am creating a new instance wherever it is needed. This approach has increased my schema size enormously because of repeated creation of almost same element many times. It also may have adverse effect on efficiency of the schema. The only way that I see is to create element once and then reference it many times but my problem is: one of the attribute of this referenced element is required to have a different set of enumerations for each referencing element. My question is: Is it possible to to add an attribute to a "Referenced Element" in XML Schema? Something like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <xs:schema xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" targetNamespace="http://www.myDomain.com" xmlns="http://www.myDomain.com" elementFormDefault="qualified"> <xs:simpleType name="myValues1"> <xs:restriction base="xs:string"> <xs:enumeration value="value1" /> <xs:enumeration value="value2" /> </xs:restriction> </xs:simpleType> <xs:element name="myElement"> <xs:complexType mixed="true"> <xs:attribute name="attr1" type="xs:string" /> <xs:attribute name="attr2" type="xs:string" /> </xs:complexType> </xs:element> <xs:element name="MainElement1"> <xs:complexType> <xs:sequence> <xs:element ref="myElement"> <xs:complexType> <xs:attribute name="myAtt" type="myValues1" /> </xs:complexType> </xs:element> </xs:sequence> <xs:attribute name="mainAtt1" /> </xs:complexType> </xs:element> </xs:schema> Or can we change type of an existing attribute of a "Referenced Element" in XML Schema? something like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <xs:schema xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" targetNamespace="http://www.myDomain.com" xmlns="http://www.myDomain.com" elementFormDefault="qualified"> <xs:simpleType name="myValues1"> <xs:restriction base="xs:string"> <xs:enumeration value="value1" /> <xs:enumeration value="value2" /> </xs:restriction> </xs:simpleType> <xs:simpleType name="myValues2"> <xs:restriction base="xs:string"> <xs:enumeration value="value3" /> <xs:enumeration value="value4" /> </xs:restriction> </xs:simpleType> <xs:element name="myElement"> <xs:complexType mixed="true"> <xs:attribute name="attr1" type="xs:string" /> <xs:attribute name="attr2" type="xs:string" /> <xs:attribute name="myAtt" type="myValues1" /> </xs:complexType> </xs:element> <xs:element name="MainElement1"> <xs:complexType> <xs:sequence> <xs:element ref="myElement"> <xs:complexType> <xs:attribute name="myAtt" type="myValues2" /> </xs:complexType> </xs:element> </xs:sequence> <xs:attribute name="mainAtt1" /> </xs:complexType> </xs:element> </xs:schema>

Or is there any other way to do this? Thanks in advance.

  • Select list auto update on any kind of change?

    I have a jQuery that when you click on a select option it will show the next one, but you have to click, you cant just use the down arrow or "tab" to the next option. I am wondering what options do I have to make this work? Here is my jQuery: function typefunction() { var itemTypes = jQuery('#type'); var select = this.value; itemTypes.change(function () { if ($(this).val() == '1-Hand') { $('.1-Hand').show(); $('.2-Hand').hide(); $('.off').hide(); $('.Armor').hide(); } else $('.1-Hand').hide(); if ($(this).val() == '2-Hand') { $('.2-Hand').show(); $('.1-Hand').hide(); $('.off').hide(); $('.Armor').hide(); } else $('.2-Hand').hide(); if ($(this).val() == 'Armor') { $('.Armor').show(); $('.2-Hand').hide(); $('.off').hide(); $('.1-Hand').hide(); } else $('.Armor').hide(); if ($(this).val() == 'Off-Hand') { $('.Off').show(); $('.2-Hand').hide(); $('.1-Hand').hide(); $('.Armor').hide(); } else $('.Off').hide(); if ($(this).val() == '1-Hand') { $('.one-hand-dps').show(); $('.item-armor').hide(); $('.two-hand-dps').hide(); } else $('.one-hand-dps').hide(); if ($(this).val() == '2-Hand') { $('.two-hand-dps').show(); $('.one-hand-dps').hide(); $('.item-armor').hide(); } else $('.two-hand-dps').hide(); if ($(this).val() == 'Armor') { $('.item-armor').show(); $('.one-hand-dps').hide(); $('.two-hand-dps').hide(); } else $('.item-armor').hide(); }); } And the HTML: <div class="input-group item"> <span class="input-group-addon">Type</span> <select id="type" name="type" class="form-control" onclick="typefunction(); itemstats(); Armor(); OffHand(); TwoHand();"> <option value="Any Type">Any Type</option> <option value="1-Hand">1-Hand</option> <option value="2-Hand">2-Hand</option> <option value="Armor">Armor</option> <option value="Off-Hand">Off-Hand</option> </select> </div> <div class="input-group item"> <span class="1-Hand input-group-addon" style="display: none;">Sub-Type</span> <select class="1-Hand form-control" name="sub[1]" style="display: none;"> <option value="All 1-Hand Item Types">All 1-Hand Item Types</option> <option>Axe</option> <option>Ceremonial Knife</option> <option>Hand Crossbow</option> <option>Dagger</option> <option>Fist Weapon</option> <option>Mace</option> <option>Mighty Weapon</option> <option>Spear</option> <option>Sword</option> <option>Wand</option> </select> </div> <div class="input-group"> <span class="2-Hand input-group-addon" style="display: none; ">Sub-Type</span> <select class="2-Hand form-control" name="sub[2]" style="display: none;"> <option>All 2-Hand Item Types</option> <option>Two-Handed Axe</option> <option>Bow</option> <option>Diabo</option> <option>Crossbow</option> <option>Two-Handed Mace</option> <option>Two-Handed Mighty Weapon</option> <option>Polearm</option> <option>Staff</option> <option>Two-Handed Sword</option> </select> </div> <div class="input-group"> <span class="Armor input-group-addon" style="display: none;">Sub-Type</span> <select class="Armor form-control" name="sub[3]" style="display:none;"> <option>All Armor Item Types</option> <option>Amulet</option> <option>Belt</option> <option>Boots</option> <option>Bracers</option> <option>Chest Armor</option> <option>Cloak</option> <option>Gloves</option> <option>Helm</option> <option>Pants</option> <option>Mighty Belt</option> <option>Ring</option> <option>Shoulders</option> <option>Spirit Stone</option> <option>Voodoo Mask</option> <option>Wizard Hat</option> </select> </div> <div class="input-group"> <span class="Off input-group-addon" style="display: none;">Sub-Type</span> <select class="Off form-control" name="sub[4]" style="display:none;"> <option>All Off-Hand Item Types</option> <option>Mojo</option> <option>Source</option> <option>Quiver</option> <option>Shield</option> </select> </div>

  • "Error in the Site Data Web Service." when performing crawl

    - by Janis Veinbergs
Installed SharePoint Services v3 (SP2, october 2009 cumulative updates, Language Pack), attached to a content database I had previously (all works). Installed Search server 2008 Express (with language pack) on top of WSS and crawl does not work. However it works for newly created web application + database. Was playing around with accounts, permissions to try get it working. Currently I have WSS_Crawler account with such permissions: Office Search Server runs with WSS_Crawler account Config database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler Content database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler WSS_Crawler is owner of search database. Added WSS_Crawler to SQL server browser user group and administrator Yes, i'v given more permissions than needed, but it doesn't even work with that and i don't know if its permission problem or what. Crawl log says there is Error in the Site Data Web Service., nothing more. There were known issues with a similar error: Error in the Site Data Web Service. (Value does not fall within the expected range.), but this is not the case as thats an old issue and i hope it has been included in SP2... Logs are from olders to newest (descending order). They don't appear to be very helpful. • How to write these two queries for a simple data warehouse, using ANSI SQL?

    - by morpheous
I am writing a simple data warehouse that will allow me to query the table to observe periodic (say weekly) changes in data, as well as changes in the change of the data (e.g. week to week change in the weekly sale amount). For the purposes of simplicity, I will present very simplified (almost trivialized) versions of the tables I am using here. The sales data table is a view and has the following structure: CREATE TABLE sales_data ( sales_time date NOT NULL, sales_amt double NOT NULL ) For the purpose of this question. I have left out other fields you would expect to see - like product_id, sales_person_id etc, etc, as they have no direct relevance to this question. AFAICT, the only fields that will be used in the query are the sales_time and the sales_amt fields (unless I am mistaken). I also have a date dimension table with the following structure: CREATE TABLE date_dimension ( id integer NOT NULL, datestamp date NOT NULL, day_part integer NOT NULL, week_part integer NOT NULL, month_part integer NOT NULL, qtr_part integer NOT NULL, year_part integer NOT NULL, ); which partition dates into reporting ranges. I need to write queries that will allow me to do the following: Return the change in week on week sales_amt for a specified period. For example the change between sales today and sales N days ago - where N is a positive integer (N == 7 in this case). Return the change in change of sales_amt for a specified period. For in (1). we calculated the week on week change. Now we want to know how that change is differs from the (week on week) change calculated last week. I am stuck however at this point, as SQL is my weakest skill. I would be grateful if an SQL master can explain how I can write these queries in a DB agnostic way (i.e. using ANSI SQL).

  • Rendering partial for table row with form_tag is getting crazy!

    - by xopht
I have 23(column)x6(row) table and change the row with link_to_remote function. each tr tag has its own id attribute. change link call change action and change action changes the row using render function wit partial. _change.html.erb <td id="row_1">1</td> . . omitted . . <td id="row_23">23</td> link_to_remote function <%= link_to_remote 'Change', :update => 'row_1', :url => change_path %> change action def change logger.debug render :partial => 'change' end If I coded like above, everything work okay. This means all changed-columns are in one row. But, if I wrap partial code with *form_for* function like below... <% form_for 'change' do %> <td id="row_1">1</td> . . omitted . . <td id="row_23">23</td> <% end %> Then, one column located in one row and that column is the first column. I've looked up the log file, but it was normal html tags. What's wrong?

  • Unique Business Value vs. Unique IT

    - by barry.perkins
When the age of computing started, technology was new, exciting, full of potential and had a long way to grow. Vendor architectures were proprietary, and limited in function at first, growing in capability and complexity over time. There were few if any "standards", let alone "open standards" and the concepts of "open systems", and "open architectures" were far in the future. Companies employed intelligent, talented and creative people to implement the best possible solutions for their company. At first, those solutions were "unique" to each company. As time progressed, standards emerged, companies shared knowledge, business capability supplied by technology grew, and companies continued to expand their use of technology. Taking advantage of change required companies to struggle through periodic "revolutionary" change cycles, struggling through costly changes that were fraught with risk, resulted in solutions with an increasingly shorter half-life, and frequently required altering existing business processes and retraining employees and partner businesses. The pace of technological invention and implementation grew at an ever increasing rate, making the "revolutionary" approach based upon "proprietary" or "closed" architectures or technologies no longer viable. Concurrent with the advancement of technology, the rate of change in business increased, leading us to the incredibly fast paced, highly charged, and competitive global economy that we have today, where the most successful companies are companies that are good at implementing, leveraging and exploiting change. Fast forward to today, a world where dramatic changes in business and technology happen continually, a world where "evolutionary" change is crucial. Companies can no longer afford to build "unique IT", nor can they afford regular intervals of "revolutionary" change, with the associated costs and risks. Human ingenuity was once again up to the task, turning technology into a platform supporting business through evolutionary change, by employing "open": open standards; open systems; open architectures; and open solutions. Employing "open", enables companies to implement systems based upon technology, capability and standards that will evolve over time, providing a solid platform upon which a company can drive business needs, requirements, functions, and processes down into the technology, rather than exposing technology to the business, allowing companies to focus on providing "unique business value" rather than "unique IT". The big question! Does moving from "older" technology that no longer meets the needs of today's business, to new "open" technology require yet another "revolutionary change"? A "revolutionary" change with a short half-life, camouflaging reality with great marketing? The answer is "perhaps". With the endless options available to choose from, it is entirely possible to implement a solution that may work well today, but in 5 years time will become yet another albatross for the company to bear. Some solutions may look good today, solving a budget challenge by reducing cost, or solving a specific tactical challenge, but result in highly complex environments, that may be difficult to manage and maintain and limit the future potential of your business. Put differently, some solutions might push today's challenge into the future, resulting in a more complex and expensive solution. There is no such thing as a "1 size fits all" IT solution for business. If all companies implemented business solutions based upon technology that required, or forced the same business processes across all businesses in an industry, it would be extremely difficult to show competitive advantage through "unique business value". It would be equally difficult to "evolve" to meet or exceed business needs and keep up with today's rapid pace of change. How does one ensure that they do not jump from one trap directly into another? Or to put it positively, there are solutions available today that can address these challenges and issues. How does one ensure that the buying decision of today will serve the business well for years into the future? Intelligent & Informed decisions - "buying right" In a previous blog entry, we discussed the value of linking tactical to strategic The key is driving the focus to what is best for your business, handling today's tactical issues while also aligning with a roadmap/strategy that is tightly aligned with your strategic business objectives. • SQL SERVER – Auditing and Profiling Database Made Easy with SQL Audit and Comply

    - by Pinal Dave
Do you like auditing your database, or can you think of about a million other things you’d rather do?  Unfortunately, auditing is incredibly important.  As with tax audits, it is important to audit databases to ensure they are following all the rules, but they are also important for troubleshooting and security. There are several ways to audit SQL Server.  There is manual auditing, which is going through your database “by hand,” and obviously takes a long time and is quite inefficient.  SQL Server also provides programs to help you audit your systems.  Different administrators will have different opinions about best practices and which tools to use, and each one will be perfected for certain systems and certain users. Today, though, I would like to talk about Apex SQL Audit.  It is an auditing tool that acts like “track changes” in a word processing document.  It will log what has changed on the database, who made the changes, and what effects these changes have had (i.e. what objects were affected down the line).  All this information is logged, and can be easily viewed or printed for easy access. One of the best features of Apex is that it is so customizable (and easy to use!).  First, start Apex.  Then you can connect to the database you would like to monitor. Once you select your database, you can select which table you want to audit. You can customize right down to the field you’d like to audit, and then select which types of actions you’d like tracked – insert, delete, or update.  Repeat these steps for every database you want monitored. To create the logs, choose “Create triggers” in the menu.  The script written here will be what logs each insert, delete, and update function.  Press F5 to execute.  All this tracking information will be stored in AUDIT_LOG_DATA and AUDIT_LOG_TRANSACTIONS tables.  View these tables using ApexSQL Audit reports. These transaction logs can be extremely detailed – especially on very busy servers, where every move it traced.  Reading them can be overwhelming, to say the least.  Apex has tried to make things easier for the average DBA, though. You can read these tracking logs in Apex, and it will display data and objects that affect your server – even things that were happening on your server before you installed Apex! To read these logs, open Apex, and connect to that database you want to audit. Go to the Transaction Logs tab, and add the logs you want to read. To narrow down what results you want to see, you can use the Filter tab to choose time, operation type, name, users, and more. Click Open, and you can see the results in a grid (as shown below).  You can export these results to CSV, HTML, XML or SQL files and save on the hard disk. One of the advantages is that since there are no triggers here, there are no other processes that will affect SQL Server performance.  Using this method is also how to view history from your database that occurred before Apex was installed.  This type of tracking does require storage space for the data sources, as the database must be fully running, and the transaction logs must exist (things not stored in the transactions logs will not be recoverable). Apex can also replace SQL Server Profiler and SQL Server Traces – which are much more complex and error-prone – with its ApexSQL Comply.  It can do fault tolerant auditing, centralized reporting, and “who saw what” information in an easy-to-use interface.  The tracking settings can be altered by the user, or the default options will provide solutions to the most common auditing problems. To get started: open ApexSQL Comply, and selected Database Filter Settings to choose which database you’d like to audit.  You can select which tracking you’re like in Operation Types – DML, DDL, queries executed, execute statements, and more.  To get started, click Start Auditing. After this, every action will be stored in the central repository database (ApexSQLCrd).  You can view the audit and create a report (or view the standard default report) using a wizard. You can see how easy it is to use ApexSQL Comply.  You can easily set audits, including the type and time, and create customized reports.  Remote users can easily access the reports through the user interface (available online, as well), and security concerns are all taken care of by the program.  Reference: Pinal Dave (http://blog.sqlauthority.com) Filed under: PostADay, SQL, SQL Authority, SQL Query, SQL Server, SQL Tips and Tricks, SQL Utility, T SQL, Technology

  • Is there a viable alternative to the agile development methodology? [closed]

    - by Eric Wilson
The two predominant software-development methodologies are waterfall and agile. When discussing these two, there is often much focus on the particular practices that distinguish them (pair programming, TDD, etc. vs. functional spec, big up-front design, etc.) But the real differences are far deeper, in that these practices come from a philosophy. Waterfall says: Change is costly, so it should be minimized. Agile says: Change is inevitable, so make change cheap. My question is, regardless of what you think of TDD or functional specs, is the waterfall development methodology really viable? Does anyone really think that minimizing change in software is a viable option for those that desire to deliver valuable software? Or is the question really about what sort of practices work best in our situations to manage the inevitable change?

  • A little primer on using TFS with a small team

    - by johndoucette
The scenario; A small team of 3 developers mostly in maintenance mode with traditional ASP.net, classic ASP, .Net integration services and utilities with the company’s third party packages, and a bunch of java-based Coldfusion web applications all under Visual Source Safe (VSS). They are about to embark on a huge SharePoint 2010 new construction project and wanted to use subversion instead VSS. TFS was a foreign word and smelled of “high cost” and of an “over complicated process”. Since they had no preconditions about the old TFS versions (‘05 & ‘08), it was fun explaining how simple it was to install a TFS server and get the ball rolling, with or without all the heavy stuff one sometimes associates with such a huge and powerful application management lifecycle product. So, how does a small team begin using TFS? 1. Start by using source control and migrate current VSS source trees into TFS. You can take the latest version or migrate the entire version history. It’s up to you on whether you want a clean start or need quick access to all the version notes and history of the bits. 2. Since most shops are mainly in maintenance mode with existing applications, begin using bug workitems for everything. When you receive an issue/bug from your current tracking system, manually enter the workitem in TFS right through Visual Studio. You can automate the integration to the current tracking system later or replace it entirely. Believe me, this thing is powerful and can handle even the largest of help desks. 3. With new construction, begin work with requirements and task workitems and follow the traditional sprint-based development lifecycle. Obviously, some minor training will be needed, but don’t fear, this is very intuitive and MSDN has a ton of lesson based labs and videos. 4. For the java developers, use the new Team Explorer Everywhere 2010 plugin (recently known as Teamprise). There is a seamless interface in Eclipse, but also a good command-line utility for other environments such as Dreamweaver. 5. Wait to fully integrate the whole workitem/project management/testing process until your team is familiar with the integrated workitems for bugs and code. After a while, you will see the team wanting more transparency into the work they are all doing and naturally, everyone will want workitems to help them organize the chaos! 6. Management will be limited in the value of the reports until you have a fully blown implementation of project planning, construction, build, deployment and testing. However, there are some basic “bug rate” reports and current backlog listings that can provide good information. Some notable explanations of TFS; Work Item Tracking and Project Management - A workitem represents the unit of work within the system which enables tracking of all activities produced by a user, whether it is a developer, business user, project manager or tester. The properties of a workitem such as linked changesets (checked-in code), who updated the data and when, the states and reasons for change, are all transitioned to a data warehouse within TFS for reporting purposes. A workitem can be defines as a "bug", "requirement", test case", or a "change request". They drive the work effort by the individual assigned to it and also provide a key role in defining what needs to be done. Workitems are the things the team needs to do to accomplish a goal. Test Case Management - Starting with a workitem known as a "test case", a tester (or developer) can now author and manage test cases within a formal test plan subsystem. Although TFS supports the test case workitem type, there is a new product known as the VS Test Professional 2010 which allows a tester to facilitate manual tests including fast forwarding steps in the process to arrive at the assertion point quickly. This repeatable process provides quick regression tests and can be conducted by the business user to ensure completeness during UAT. In addition, developers no longer can provide a response to a bug with the line "cannot reproduce". With every test run, attachments including the recorded session, captured environment configurations and settings, screen shots, intellitrace (debugging history), and in some cases if the lab manager is being used, a snapshot of the tested environment is available. Version Control - A modern system allowing shared check-in/check-out, excellent merge conflict resolution, Shelvesets (personal check-ins), branching/merging visualization, public workspaces, gated check-ins, security hierarchy capabilities, and changeset/workitem tracking. Knowing what was done with the code by any developer has become much easier to picture and resolve issues. Team Build - Automate the compilation process whether you need it to be whenever a developer checks-in code, periodically such as nightly builds for testers in the morning, or manual builds to be deployed into production. Each build can run through pre-determined tests, perform code analysis to see if the developer conforms to the team standards, and reject the build if either fails. Project Portal & Reporting - Provide management with a dashboard with insight into the project(s). "Where are we" in each step of the way including past iterations and the current burndown rate. Enabling this feature is easy as it seamlessly interfaces with existing SharePoint implementations.

  • Source Control and SQL Development &ndash; Part 3

    - by Ajarn Mark Caldwell
In parts one and two of this series, I have been specifically focusing on the latest version of SQL Source Control by Red Gate Software.  But I have been doing source-controlled SQL development for years, long before this product was available, and well before Microsoft came out with Database Projects for Visual Studio.  “So, how does that work?” you may wonder.  Well, let me share some of the details of how we do it where I work… The key to this approach is that everything is done via Transact-SQL script files; either natively written T-SQL, or generated.  My preference is to write all my code by hand, which forces you to become better at your SQL syntax.  But if you really prefer to use the Management Studio GUI to make database changes, you can still do that, and then you use the Generate Scripts feature of the GUI to produce T-SQL scripts afterwards, and store those in your source control system.  You can generate scripts for things like stored procedures and views by right-clicking on the database in the Object Explorer, and Choosing Tasks, Generate Scripts (see figure 1 to the left).  You can also do that for the CREATE scripts for tables, but that does not work when you have a table that is already in production, and you need to make just a simple change, such as adding a new column or index.  In this case, you can use the GUI to make the table changes, and then instead of clicking the Save button, click the Generate Change Script button (). Then, once you have saved the change script, go ahead and execute it on your development database to actually make the change.  I believe that it is important to actually execute the script rather than just click the Save button because this is your first test that your change script is working and you didn’t somehow lose a portion of the change. As you can imagine, all this generating of scripts can get tedious and tempting to skip entirely, so again, I would encourage you to just get in the habit of writing your own Transact-SQL code, and then it is just a matter of remembering to save your work, just like you are in the habit of saving changes to a Word or Excel document before you exit the program. So, now that you have all of these script files, what do you do with them?  Well, we organize ours into folders labeled ChangeScripts, Functions, Views, and StoredProcedures, and those folders are loaded into our source control system.  ChangeScripts contains all of the table and index changes, and anything else that is basically a one-time-only execution.  Of course you want to write your scripts with qualifying logic so that if a script were accidentally run more than once in a database, it would not crash nor corrupt anything; but these scripts are really intended to be run only once in a database. Once you have your initial set of scripts loaded into source control, then making changes, such as altering a stored procedure becomes a simple matter of checking out your CREATE PROCEDURE* script, editing it in SSMS, saving the change, executing the script in order to effect the change in your database, and then checking the script back in to source control.  Of course, this is where the lack of integration for source control systems within SSMS becomes an irritation, because this means that in addition to SSMS, I also have my source control client application running to do the check-out and check-in.  And when you have 800+ procedures like we do, that can be quite tedious to locate the procedure I want to change in source control, check it out, then locate the script file in my working folder, open it in SSMS, do the change, save it, and the go back to source control to check in.  Granted, it is not nearly as burdensome as, say, losing your source code and having to rebuild it from memory, or losing the audit trail that good source control systems provide.  It is worth the effort, and this is how I have been doing development for the last several years. Remember that everything that the SQL Server Management Studio does in modifying your database can also be done in plain Transact-SQL code, and this is what you are storing.  And now I have shown you how you can do it all without spending any extra money.  You already have source control, or can get free, open-source source control systems (almost seems like an oxymoron, doesn’t it) and of course Management Studio is free with your SQL Server database engine software. So, whether you spend the money on tools to make it easier, or not, you now have no excuse for not using source control with your SQL development. * In our current model, the scripts for stored procedures and similar database objects are written with an IF EXISTS…DROP… at the top, followed by the CREATE PROCEDURE… section, and that followed by a section that assigns permissions.  This allows me to run the same script regardless of whether the procedure previously existed in the database.  If the script was only an ALTER PROCEDURE, then it would fail the first time that procedure was deployed to a database, unless you wrote other code to stub it if it did not exist.  There are a few different ways you could organize your scripts for deployment, each with its own trade-offs, but I think it is absolutely critical that whichever way you organize things, you ensure that the same script is run throughout the deployment cycle, and do not allow customizations to creep in between TEST and PROD.  If you do, then you have broken the integrity of your deployment process because what you deployed to PROD was not exactly the same as what was tested in TEST, so you effectively have now released untested code into PROD.

  • Converting LINQ to Twitter to Twitter API v1.1

    - by Joe Mayo
Twitter recently updated their API to v1.1 (Current status: API v1.1). Naturally, LINQ to Twitter  needed to be updated too. This blog post outlines the changes made to LINQ to Twitter during this conversion and highlights important features that LINQ to Twitter developers will want to know. Overall Impact Generally speaking, Twitter API v1.1 is semantically very much the same as it’s predecessor. The base URL changed and so did a few resource segments, but the resources themselves are still intact. The good news is that LINQ to Twitter has always shielded the developer from this plumbing, so the entities, types, and filters didn’t change much at all.  The following sections describe what did  change. Authentication In Twitter API v1.0 authentication was not required for some resources, such as user timelines and search. However, that’s all changed because *all* queries must be authenticated in Twitter API v1.1. LINQ to Twitter has various types of authorizers you can use, supporting whatever OAuth options are available via Twitter.  You can see the LINQ to Twitter documentation, Securing Your Applications, for more info on OAuth support. The New Search One of the larger changes to the API was Search. To be more specific, the Search entity now contains a List<Status>, named Statuses, to hold results.  Additionally, any meta-data associated with the search is now in a property named SearchMetaData. The change to the Search entity and responses is the big change, but the good news is that your Search query syntax doesn’t change. Different Rate Limits The issue of rate limits itself is contentious, but this discussion is focused on the coding experience and I’ll leave the politics to those who prefer to engage in that activity. What’s important here is that both headers and resources have changed. You should review Twitter’s Rate Limit documentation to understand what the changes mean.  A quick explanation is that rate limits are applied individually to each resource in 15 minute time intervals. In LINQ to Twitter these changes surface on the Help entity, via HelpType.RateLimits. The RateLimits query has a Resources filter where you can specify a comma-separated list of categories to return rate limit info for.  The results materialize in the RateLimits dictionary, keyed on category. The Help entity also has a RateLimitsAuthorizationContext, holding the Access Token for the user performing queries – and to whom the rate limits apply. In addition to the new RateLimits query, there are new RateLimit headers that appear in the query response, whose HTTP header name is of the form X-Rate-Limit… which is different from the previous header name. LINQ to Twitter surfaces these headers via the existing properties of the TwitterContext instance. For anyone who retrieved rate limit information via the Headers property of TwitterContext, you should be aware of the new header names.  I haven’t done anything with Feature rate limit properties yet, but they appear to no longer be available – this will require more follow-up. Error Handling Twitter API v1.1 has a new format for Error Codes & Responses. LINQ to Twitter wraps these messages in the TwitterQueryException, which has been updated appropriately. The Message property of TwitterQueryException now reflects the Twitter error message, when available. There’s also a new ErrorCode that’s populated with the message error code. Parameters Most parameters stayed the same, but one of interest is Include Entities (different from LINQ to Twitter data object entities). Entities are metadata hanging off tweets, that provide start/end position in the tweet and other information for mentions, urls, hash tags, and media. Entities used to not be included unless you specified you wanted them. Now, in v1.1, entities are included by default for all APIs that return a Status.  If you were always setting IncludeEntities to true, then you won’t see a change. However, be aware that you’ll now be receiving additional data in your response from Twitter, which will explain a sudden increase in bandwidth utilization. This might or might not  matter to you  depending on the requirements of your application, but you should be aware of it. Everything Else There might be small changes here and there that I haven’t mentioned, but these were the ones you should be most aware of.  Streams didn’t change, but Twitter will be deprecating username/password authentication on public streams, in favor of OAuth, so you’ll be seeing me make that change some time in the future.  Also, Twitter will continue to evolve the API and you can expect that LINQ to Twitter will change accordingly. Summary The big changes to Twitter API were Authentication, Search, Rate Limits, and Error Handling. All API calls must be authenticated. You’ll need to change your code to read Search results differently, but the query is much the same as you use now. There’s a new RateLimits API, one of the Help queries.  Also, the new error messages are integrated into TwitterQueryException. Besides these changes, I expect  most others to be small or affect a smaller percentage of developers.  You can get the latest version of LINQ to Twitter from NuGet or visit the LINQ to Twitter download page at CodePlex.com.   @JoeMayo

  • Uniquely identify a mobile device

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information Sometimes you need to identify every device your app is installed on uniquely. This is for instance important where you have per-device licensing restrictions. For Win8 store apps, You can use ASHWID (Application Specific Hardware Identifier). ASHWID will be different app to app and device to device. Any hardware changes to the device will cause the unique id to change. You can also detect minor change vs. major change to build custom level of tolerance in what is considered a change. For instance, ejecting a USB stick is a minor change. The below code snippet shows you how to get the unique device id, Read full article ....

  • BeansBinding Across Modules in a NetBeans Platform Application

    - by Geertjan
Here's two TopComponents, each in a different NetBeans module. Let's use BeansBinding to synchronize the JTextField in TC2TopComponent with the data published by TC1TopComponent and received in TC2TopComponent by listening to the Lookup. The key to getting to the solution is to have the following in TC2TopComponent, which implements LookupListener: private BindingGroup bindingGroup = null; private AutoBinding binding = null; @Override public void resultChanged(LookupEvent le) { if (bindingGroup != null && binding != null) { bindingGroup.getBinding("customerNameBinding").unbind(); } if (!result.allInstances().isEmpty()){ Customer c = result.allInstances().iterator().next(); // put the customer into the lookup of this topcomponent, // so that it will remain in the lookup when focus changes // to this topcomponent: ic.set(Collections.singleton(c), null); bindingGroup = new BindingGroup(); binding = Bindings.createAutoBinding( // a two-way binding, i.e., a change in // one will cause a change in the other: AutoBinding.UpdateStrategy.READ_WRITE, // source: c, BeanProperty.create("name"), // target: jTextField1, BeanProperty.create("text"), // binding name: "customerNameBinding"); bindingGroup.addBinding(binding); bindingGroup.bind(); } } I must say that this solution is preferable over what I've been doing prior to getting to this solution: I would get the customer from the resultChanged, set a class-level field to that customer, add a document listener (or action listener, which is invoked when Enter is pressed) on the text field and, when a change is detected, set the new value on the customer. All that is not needed with the above bit of code. Then, in the node, make sure to use canRename, setName, and getDisplayName, so that when the user presses F2 on a node, the display name can be changed. In other words, when the user types something different in the node display name after pressing F2, the underlying customer name is changed, which happens, in the first place, because the customer name is bound to the text field's value, so that the text field's value will also change once enter is pressed on the changed node display name. Also set a PropertyChangeListener on the node (which implies you need to add property change support to the customer object), so that when the customer object changes (which happens, in the second place, via a change in the value of the text field, as defined in the binding defined above), the node display name is updated. In other words, there's still a bit of plumbing you need to include. But less than before and the nasty class-level field for storing the customer in the TC2TopComponent is no longer needed. And a listener on the text field, with a property change listener implented on the TC2TopComponent, isn't needed either. On the other hand, it's more code than I was using before and I've had to include the BeansBinding JAR, which adds a bit of overhead to my application, without much additional functionality over what I was doing originally. I'd lean towards not doing things this way. Seems quite expensive for essentially replacing a listener on a text field and a property change listener implemented on the TC2TopComponent for being notified of changes to the customer so that the text field can be updated. On the other other hand, it's kind of nice that all this listening-related code is centralized in one place now. So, here's a nice improvement over the above. Instead of listening for a customer, listen for a node, from which the customer can be obtained. Then, bind the node display name to the text field's value, so that when the user types in the text field, the node display name is updated. That saves you from having to listen in the node for changes to the customer's name. In addition to that binding, keep the previous binding, because the previous binding connects the customer name to the text field, so that when the customer display name is changed via F2 on the node, the text field will be updated. private BindingGroup bindingGroup = null; private AutoBinding nodeUpdateBinding; private AutoBinding textFieldUpdateBinding; @Override public void resultChanged(LookupEvent le) { if (bindingGroup != null && textFieldUpdateBinding != null) { bindingGroup.getBinding("textFieldUpdateBinding").unbind(); } if (bindingGroup != null && nodeUpdateBinding != null) { bindingGroup.getBinding("nodeUpdateBinding").unbind(); } if (!result.allInstances().isEmpty()) { Node n = result.allInstances().iterator().next(); Customer c = n.getLookup().lookup(Customer.class); ic.set(Collections.singleton(n), null); bindingGroup = new BindingGroup(); nodeUpdateBinding = Bindings.createAutoBinding( AutoBinding.UpdateStrategy.READ_WRITE, n, BeanProperty.create("name"), jTextField1, BeanProperty.create("text"), "nodeUpdateBinding"); bindingGroup.addBinding(nodeUpdateBinding); textFieldUpdateBinding = Bindings.createAutoBinding( AutoBinding.UpdateStrategy.READ_WRITE, c, BeanProperty.create("name"), jTextField1, BeanProperty.create("text"), "textFieldUpdateBinding"); bindingGroup.addBinding(textFieldUpdateBinding); bindingGroup.bind(); } } Now my node has no property change listener, while the customer has no property change support. As in the first bit of code, the text field doesn't have a listener either. All that listening is taken care of by the BeansBinding code.  Thanks to Toni for help with this, though he can't be blamed for anything that is wrong with it, only thanked for anything that is right with it.

  • TF203015 The Item $/path/file has an incompatible pending change. While trying to unshelve.

    - by drachenstern
I'm using Visual Studio 2010 Pro against Team Server 2010 and I had my project opened (apparently) as a solution from the repo, but I should've opened it as "web site". I found this out during compile, so I went to shelve my new changes and deleted the project from my local disk, then opened the project again from source (this time as web site) and now I can't unshelve my files. Is there any way to work around this? Did I blow something up? Do I need to do maintenance at the server? I found this question on SO #2332685 but I don't know what cache files he's talking about (I'm on XP :\ ) EDIT: Found this link after posting the question, sorry for the delay in researching, still didn't fix my problem Of course I can't find an error code for TF203015 anywhere, so no resolution either (hence my inclusion of the number in the title, yeah?) EDIT: I should probably mention that these files were never checked in in the first place. Does that matter? Can you shelve an unchecked item? Is that what I did wrong? EDIT: WHAP - FOUND IT!!! Use "Undo" on the items that don't exist because they show up in pending changes as checkins.

I get an error when configure the XML with the following dtd: <!DOCTYPE prod-config SYSTEM "prod-config.dtd"> The error is as follows: For security reasons DTD is prohibited in this XML document. To enable DTD processing set the ProhibitDtd property on XmlReaderSettings to false and pass the settings into XmlReader.Create method. prod-config.dtd is sitting in the same directory as the XML config file. I don't have access to the component code to modify XmlReaderSettings, ProhibitDtd etc. Is there anotherway I can modify or tag the XML file to permit the DTD to be accessed?
