• Is there a way to declare a variable that implements multiple interfaces in .Net?

  Similar to this Java question. I would like to specify that a variable implements multiple interfaces. For instance private {IFirstInterface, ISecondInterface} _foo; public void SetFoo({IFirstInterface, ISecondInterface} value) { _foo = value; } Requirements: I don't have the ability to add an interface to most type that would be passed in to Foo. So I can't create a third interface that inherits from IFirstInterface and ISecondInterface. I would like to avoid making the containing class generic if possible because the type of Foo doesn't have much to do with the class and the user isn't likely to know it at compile time. I need to use foo to access methods in both interfaces at a later time. I would like to do this in a compiler safe way, i.e. no trying to cast to the interface just before trying to use it. If foo does not implement both interfaces quite a bit of functionality won't work properly. Is this possible?

  I have Entity Framework entities Events which have an EntityCollection of RSVP. I want to convert the EntityCollection of RSVP to a generic List< of a POCO class RSVP. So I want EntityCollection - List. What would be the best way to go about achieving this? • WPF, how can I optimize lines and circles drawing ?

  Hello ! I am developping an application where I need to draw a graph on the screen. For this purpose, I use a Canvas and I put Controls on it. An example of such a draw as shown in the app can be found here : http://free0.hiboox.com/images/1610/d82e0b7cc3521071ede601d3542c7bc5.png It works fine for simple graphs, but I also want to be able to draw very large graphs (hundreds of nodes). And when I try to draw a very large graph, it takes a LOT of time to render. My problem is that the code is not optimized at all, I just wanted it to work. Until now, I have a Canvas on the one hand, and multiple Controls on the other hands. • WPF Standard Commands - Where's Exit?

  I'm creating a standard menu in my WPF application. I know that I can create custom commands, but I know there are also a bunch of standard commands to bind to. For example, to open a file I should bind to ApplicationCommands.Open, to close a file I should bind to ApplicationCommands.Close. There's also a large number of EditCommands, ComponentCommands or NavigationCommands. There doesn't seem to be an "Exit" command. I would have expected there to be ApplicationCommands.Exit. What should I bind to the "Exit" menu item? To create a custom command for something this generic just seems wrong.

I'm trying to design my data access to allow various facets - from ASP.net, WCF and Windows Forms / Windows services. I'm a bit confused re: session management etc.. How would I handle this? I've been checking out code such as: http://membranecms.googlecode.com/svn/ and questions such as: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1207833/nhibernate-linq-session-management But what do i do if i don't just do things in a web based environment..? Do i need to create different repositories for each client? Or do i pass in the ISession into the (for example) UserRepository constructor..? ... as a side note I'm using nHibernate.Linq Also using fluent nHibernate to config my mapping

• Should I inherit from a stackpanel instead of a stack panel, grid or other UI element or UserControl

  So I'm building a peice of UI that might me in a dialog window or might be in embedded in part of a bigger page. I don't have alot of experience with WPF, but in ASP.NET you always used UserControls, because their wasn't anyt really generic UI inherit to inherit from (and in a way UserControl was just a div). My coworker has written alot of controls that inherit directly from stackpanel. That seems like a decent way of doing things. But when I went to create a control for the code I was going to write I was presented with a dialog that only included the UserControl, which I wasn't that familiar with in the context of WPF. So can someone explain to me the difference from building a control that inherits from user control vs inheriting directly from a stackPanel?

• Interface "not marked with serializable attribute" exception

  I have a very odd exception in my C# app: when trying to deserialize a class containing a generic List<IListMember> (where list entries are specified by an interface), an exception is thrown reporting that "the type ...IListMember is not marked with the serializable attribute" (phrasing may be slightly different, my VisualStudio is not in English). Now, interfaces cannot be Serializable; the class actually contained in the list, implementing IListMember, is [Serializable]; and yes, I have checked that IListMember is in fact defined as an interface and not accidentally as a class! I have tried reproducing the exception in a separate test project only containing the class containing the List and the members, but there it serializes and deserializes happily :/ Does anyone have any good ideas about what it could be?

  EDIT: i just deleted the entire post and reformulated the question to be more generic. I want to do a simple strategy game: map, units. Map: one class. Units: another class, self drawn. Simple questions: How does an unit should redraw itself on the map. A unit should be a JPanel or similar Swing component (just to be able to manage them as an entity with its own mousehandlers) or can be another thing, without neglecting the fact that it should be an autonomous object with its own action handlers and fields. Is this map-units model correct of a simple game that would help me to learn in a fun way Java and OOP fundamentals. Thats it!

• Don't want to JSON serialize the whole list of classes

  Hey, I've got a IList of Sites in my application and Site has a large amount of properties. I'm wanting to convert this list to JSON to be used in a dropdownlist similar to this var sites = SiteRepository.FindAllSites(); return new JsonResult() { Data = sites, JsonRequestBehavior = JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet }; the problem I have is that I only want to use the id and name properties of the site class. I was thinking a way round this would be to use an 'adaptor' class that would then only expose these two properties and I would then serialize that. The problem I have is I want to make the class generic so that it can handle any list of objects. Has anybody come across a similar situation and solved it?

• Passing parametrized ArrayList to a function in java

  I have the following fucntion. func(ArrayList <String> name) { ........ } The function fills the ArrayList. (I don't want to return the ArrayList) However, in the caller function the ArrayList obtained has all items of ArrayList as null. For eg. 1 name = new ArrayList[num]; 2 func(name); 3 System.out.println(name[0]); I get NullPointerException at line 3. Is this because of line 1, i.e. I am not parametrizing? If yes, is there another way this can be done? Because java does not allow creating a generic array of parametrized ArrayList.

  I've jumped into the C# bandwagon and was wondering if there's an equivalent of Joshua Bloch's Effective Java for the C# world. I've already being able to apply some Java knowledge to C# given their similarity but I'm interested in knowledge to make the most effective use of C# specific features. For example, Generics are not implemented equally in Java and C#, so it's not clear to me if the Java Generic "techniques" will work in C# as well. I'm mostly interested in C# 3.0. That is (of course) unless you guys think I would benefit for looking into versions 1 and 2 features.

  The question is entitled with the word "Stream" because the question below is a concrete example of a more generic doubt I have about Streams: I have a problem that accepts two solutions and I want to know the best one: I download a file, save it to disk (2 min), read it and write the contents to the DB (+ 2 min). I download a file and write the contents directly to the DB (3 min). If the write to DB fails I'll have to download again in the second case, but not in the first case. Which is best?   Subject says it all. I want to modify the POCO generation adapter (http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/EFPocoAdapter) to generate my own code. I have the .tt adapters done, but I want to be able to distribute this to coworkers, so they right-click on the model, choose "Generate Code", and my t4 templates appear in the options along with the other choices. Is there an easy way to do this? I found some articles at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/tsyyf0yh(VS.80).aspx but it was focused on generic templates, and I'm looking for specifically model templates.

  When designing a stock management database system (sales / purchases) what would be the best way to store the various taxes and other such amounts? A few of the fields that could be saved are: Unit price excluding tax Unit price including tax Tax per item Total excluding tax (rounded to 2 decimals) Total including tax (rounded to 2 decimals) Total tax (rounded to 2 decimals) Currently the most reasonable solution so far is storing down (roughly) item, quantity, total excluding tax (rounded) and the total tax (rounded). Can anyone suggest some better way of storing this details for a generic system? Also, given the system needs to be robust, what should be done if there were multiple tax values (eg: state and city) which might need to be separated, in this case a separate table would be in order, but would it be considered excessive to just have a rowID and some taxID mapping to a totalTax column?

  I want to test for example int orderId = myRepository.SubmitOrder(orderA); orderB = myRepository.GetOrder(orderId); Assert.AreEqual(orderA, orderB); // fail Obviously I need a value comparison here, but I don't want to have to provide an overridden Equals implementation for all of my classes purely for the sake of testing (it wouldn't be of any use in the rest of the app). Is there a provided generic method that just checks every field using reflection? Or if not, it is possible to write my own?

• IBM RAD With Java 1.5 wont compile code with generics

  Hello I have some code that has generic references in it and my IBM RAD IDE will not compile the code, instead treating it as an error. I have checked the version of the JRE its pointing to across all the Enterprise Project's and it is 1.5 which I am told does support generics. Also I checked that all the libraries for WAS were pointing to the correct version and that the Compiler Compliance Level was set correctly (which it was at 5.0 and i changed it to 6.0 with no luck either) Does anyone have any suggestions as to anything else I can try? I have issues like this with RAD all the time and I dont know about anyone else but they took eclipse and made it complicated and dysfunctional.

  Hi, I am traditionally a Perl and C++ programmer, so apologies in advance if I am misunderstanding something trivial about Python! I would like to create a reference to a reference. Huh? Ok. All objects in Python are actually references to the real object. So, how do I create a reference to this reference? Why do I need/want this? I am overriding sys.stdout and sys.stderr to create a logging library. I would like a (second-level) reference to sys.stdout. If I could create a reference to a reference, then I could create a generic logger class where the init function receives a reference to a file handle reference that will be overrided, e.g., sys.stdout or sys.stderr.   I'm trying some VS2005 IDE macros to modify a large amount of projects (~80) within a solution. Some of the properties I wish to set do expose a programmatic interface to 'default', but many others do not. Is there a generic way to set such properties to their default? • Testing complex entities

  I've got a C# form, with various controls on it. The form controls an ongoing process, and there are many, many aspects that need to be right for the program to run correctly. Each part can be unit tested (for instance, loading some coefficients, drawing some diagnostics) but I often run into problems that are best described with an example: "If I click here, then here, then change this, then re-open the form, then click here, it crashes or produces an error" I've tried my best to use common code organisational ideas (inheritance, DRY, separation of concerns) but there never seems to be a way to test every single path, and inevitably, a form with several controls will have a huge number of ways to execute. What can I read (preferably online) that addresses this kind of issue, and is there a (non-generic) term for it. This isn't a specific problem I'm having, but one that creeps up on me, especially with WinForms.
