  • Optimistic non-locking copy of InnoDB .frm files

    MySQL Enterprise Backup(MEB) does hot backup of innodb data and log files. Till MEB 3.6.1, the user backs up the only innodb tables in a 3 step process: STEP 1. Take backup using --only-innodb option STEP 2. Temporarily make the table read only by executing “FLUSH TABLES WITH READ LOCK” MEB 3.7.0 has an enhancement to innodb file copying. The .frm files gets copied along with the hot backup done for innodb files. I would like to make the blog a little interactive by explaining the feature as answers: 1. What are these .frm files? The files containing the metadata, such as the table definition, of a MySQL table. For backups, the full set of .frm files are always required along with the backup data, to be able to restore tables that are altered or dropped after the backup. 2. Can the .frm files not be copied by MEB itself? --only-innodb-with-frm is the new option introduced in MEB 3.7.1 to do a copy of .frm files without locking the tables during backup operation itself. This is to reduce the pain of manually copying the .frm files. The option is intended for backups where you can ensure that no ALTER TABLE, CREATE TABLE, DROP TABLE, or other DDL statements modify the .frm files for InnoDB tables during the backup operation. 3. How is data consistency ensured? MEB does validation of the .frm files after copying by comparing with the server directory to see if the timestamps of any of the .frm files is greater than the saved system time (check .frm time).  This change in timestamp of the .frm files will show if a table is altered during the process of backup. The total number of frm files in the server directory is also verified against the copied contents. If the number of .frm files is less compared to server directory, it shows that table/tables have been dropped during the process of backup. If the number of .frm files is more compared to server directory, it shows that new table/tables have been created during backup operation. 4. How does MEB handle data inconsistency? MEB copies the .frm files through several iterations,  does the validation and throws a WARNING if there is any inconsistency found in .frm files at the end of backup operation. This means the user is warned of some DDL operations that had occurred during backup operation, and has to manually copy the .frm files or do a backup again. 5. What is the option and explain its usage? The option introduced is --only-innodb-with-frm which does optimistic copy of .frm files without locking. This can be used when the user wants to backup only innodb tables along with .frm files. The option can take one of the 2 values: all | related. --only-innodb-with-frm=all does copy of all .frm files of all innodb tables. --only-innodb-with-frm=related works in conjunction with --include option.This is to allow partial backup of .frm files corresponding to the tables specified in --include.   • Nashorn in the Twitterverse, Continued

    After doing the Twitter example, it seemed reasonable to try graphing the result with JavaFX.  At this time the Nashorn project doesn't have an JavaFX shell, so we have to go through some hoops to create an JavaFX application.  I thought showing you some of those hoops might give you some idea about what you can do mixing Nashorn and Java (we'll add a JavaFX shell to the todo list.) Okay, with the meat out of the way, let's talk about the hoops. When working with JavaFX, you start with a main subclass of javafx.application.Application.  This class handles the initialization of the JavaFX libraries and the event processing.  This is what I used for this example; import java.io.IOException; import java.io.InputStream; import java.io.InputStreamReader; import javafx.application.Application; import javafx.stage.Stage; import javax.script.ScriptEngine; import javax.script.ScriptEngineManager; import javax.script.ScriptException; public class TrendingMain extends Application { private static final ScriptEngineManager MANAGER = new ScriptEngineManager(); private final ScriptEngine engine = MANAGER.getEngineByName("nashorn"); private Trending trending; public static void main(String[] args) { launch(args); } @Override public void start(Stage stage) throws Exception { trending = (Trending) load("Trending.js"); trending.start(stage); } @Override public void stop() throws Exception { trending.stop(); } private Object load(String script) throws IOException, ScriptException { try (final InputStream is = TrendingMain.class.getResourceAsStream(script)) { return engine.eval(new InputStreamReader(is, "utf-8")); } } } To initialize Nashorn, we use JSR-223's javax.script.  private static final ScriptEngineManager MANAGER = new ScriptEngineManager(); private final ScriptEngine engine = MANAGER.getEngineByName("nashorn"); This code sets up an instance of the Nashorn engine for evaluating scripts. The  load method reads a script into memory and then gets engine to eval that script.  Note, that load also returns the result of the eval. Now for the fun part.  There are several different approaches we could use to communicate between the Java main and the script.  In this example we'll use a Java interface.  The JavaFX main needs to do at least start and stop, so the following will suffice as an interface; public interface Trending {     public void start(Stage stage) throws Exception;     public void stop() throws Exception; } At the end of the example's script we add; (function newTrending() {     return new Packages.Trending() {         start: function(stage) {             var data = getTrendingData();             graph(stage, data);             stage.show();         },         stop: function() {         }     } })(); which instantiates a new subclass instance of Trending and overrides the start and stop methods.  The result of this function call is what is returned to main via the eval. trending = (Trending) load("Trending.js"); To recap, the script Trending.js contains functions getTrendingData, graph and newTrending, plus the call at the end to newTrending.  Back in the Java code, we cast the result of the eval (call to newTrending) to Trending, thus, we end up with an object that we can then use to call back into the script.  trending.start(stage); Voila. ?

  • The web publishing extension is not installed which is required to publish

    I was tring to deploy an ASP.NET Web Application to a Windows Azure Web Site by following the tutorial through this link: https://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/develop/net/tutorials/get-started/ After download the public profile, which is a ".PublishSettings" file, I go back to Visual Studio and right-click the project in Solution Explorer and select Publish from the context menu as the tutorial said. However, a warning box jumped up and it showed me that "The Web Publishing extension is not installed which is required to publish. You can install it from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=208120." I already installed "Windows Azure SDK for .NET (VS 2012)" and I also tried to uninstall this and install again, but the same problem is still there. Anyone knows how to solve this? I am really appreciated.

I get an error if the call to ggplot() is INSIDE the function but not if the call to ggplot() is OUTSIDE the function. Anyone have any idea why the seeming contradiction?

    Using the user's currentLocale from the device, I want to have a date format exactly like the one generated for NSDateFormatterFullStyle minus the year: [dateFormatter setDateStyle:NSDateFormatterFullStyle]; Friday, 21 September (2012) I've noticed the iPhone app, Living Earth does this and works for all locales, so does the iPhone lock screen. A custom formatter such as, [dateFormatter setDateFormat:@"EEEE, MMMM"]; won't change with localisation. Can anyone shed some light on how to accomplish this?   • Use DivX settings to encode to mp4 with ffmpeg

    I'm used to use VirtualDub to encode a video to AVI container with DivX-codec (and MP3 for audio). Now I'm planning to use ffmpeg to encode videos to MP4 container with h264-codec. What I've figured out is that I need to use libx264 and one of those presets to make anything work. However, I'm amazed about the video bitrate ffmpeg uses for encoding. I tried other presets, but they don't use my specified bitrate. Just in case you wonder how I came up with the 1978000, I'm using this formula which I found valid for DivX-files (I'm guessing the bitrate won't change that much for h264): width * height * 25 * 0.22 / 1000 I'm not sure if the 0.22 correlates with the CRF somehow. Overall I forgot to say the I will use a two-pass scenario, which is why I don't use the CRF here. I will try to read more about this. Currently I'm just trying to get something running that shows me that I'm doing something right (ffmpeg isn't the easiest tool to understand ;)).     Interested in learning Direct2d to create a Windows 8 app, but after 2 hours of research I'm thoroughly confused. Samples like this (Creating a Simple Direct2D Application) seem to assume you know what an HWND and HRESULT is, and how the Windows API works in general. My question is this: do you need an understanding of the Win API, COM, OLE, and all this other Windows stuff in order to get a good grasp on Direct2d/3d? All the other barebones tutorials assume that you know all this stuff and I don't really know where to start. The startup D2D project in VS 2012 gives you a bunch of files but there's no main or WinMain... How does this program even start?
