  • OpenType Font Parsing for Pleasure and Profit (anyone understand these damn tables?)

    So, this is mainly for fun, I'm poking around and trying to find my way inside a few fonts and i have a few questions i'd reeally appreciate some help on if anyone has done this kind of stuff. cmap table The fonts i am testing with contain several cmap subtables of different formats. I can read them, but i don't understand which i should be using. ie. what is the strategy for choosing the most appropriate subtable? Does this even make sense? glyf table This is really making my head hurt. I'm going by what is on here. Looking at the second table on that page.. I've got 'n' endPtsOfContours, 'n' instructions and 'n' flags but it is not clear to me if i have the same number of flags as contours (i know how many contours i have). Then, to make matters worse..(fun!) i have an array of xCoords and an array of yCoords. These arrays seem to be of indeterminate length and may contain data of either BYTE or SHORT but we are not going to tell you which.. Thanks to anyone willing to shed some light.

    I have heard that setting the --prefix=PREFIX option when compiling PHP on linux will allow you to have more than one install of PHP at a time without them clashing. (I think the default if this isn't set is /usr/local). However, I'm not sure what exactly it does or what a good setting to use is. Furthermore, I've also heard that setting it to something other than the default value might make some PHP extensions harder to install. ./configure --prefix=PREFIX ...

  • Images from remote source - is it possible or is really a bad practice?

    I'm building a management system for websites and I had an idea related to image galleries that I'm not sure it's a good approach. Since images might need good deals of space depending on how much images a user uploads an so on, I thought on using cloud services like dropbox, mega and google drive to store images and load then when needed. The obvious problem is that for me this seems a useless solution because it would be slow to download the images from the remote source, making the user experience not so good. Is there any way to save images of a image gallery on remote source without getting the user experience bad because of speed? Or this is really not a good practice?

I've searched for opensource projects to look and the only thing I had found was django-cashflow. This app uses python-money. I've read some of the code and the ways it's coded seems a bit weird to me and it's not fully complete. Is the app worth to take a deep look? Does anyone know about another similar app?   • Want to open Shadowbox gallery directly through Wordpress Navigation Menu

    I want to be able to open my shadowbox gallery in wordpress by directly clicking the portfolio link in the navbar. Right now it either opens the portfolio page I made with the gallery in it or opens images separately (without shadowbox), this was because I tried adding html to the Nav Label in the wordpress dashboard.   • App crashing on open on Motorola Backflip only

    I have recently published my second app on the Android Market. I've gotten a few e-mails about the app crashing on open, and all users were using the Motorola Backflip. It seems to work fine on all other devices. The app shows the background image, but crashes right after that. Is there something different I have to do when coding for that device? The strange thing is that it is very similar to my first app, which seems to work just fine for them. The major difference is that my second app is a paid app, and uses Android Licence Verification. My implementation should catch any license errors though, and I've tested this on my device. Users have uninstalled and reinstalled the app without success. I'm stumped. The other thing they're reporting is that the icon doesn't even show properly, but rather is a gear in a box, which makes me think that something goes awry very early in the installation process.

    In my objective-c program, I need to open a URL in Safari no matter what the system's default browser is. That means that this won't work, because it could launch Firefox or whatever other browser: NSWorkspace * ws = [NSWorkspace sharedWorkspace]; [ws openURL: url]; I think I'm close with this: [ws launchAppWithBundleIdentifier: @"com.apple.Safari" options: NSWorkspaceLaunchWithoutActivation additionalEventParamDescriptor: NULL launchIdentifier: nil]; only need to figure out how to pass in the URL as parameter...     Hi I am new to programming and have tried to make a facebook app with open graph beta tutorial. I have done exactly as described in the tutorial but when i try to use the debug tool it gives me an error: Extraneous Property: Objects of this type do not allow properties named og:app_id. I have noticed and searched that its doing this because the tag needs to be <fb:app_id>. I checked my file it says fb:app_id only, but the raw data that pulls up on the debug tool shows meta property="og:app_id" content="267029796703617" even though i have changed and uploaded with fb:app_id. I have checked my page several times and tried some possible solutions but have had no success. Can someone help me fix this.

    I have a strange problem with updating Mercurial. Everytime when I add a file to my repository and then update another location of the repository (for example with in CI process), the error "no match found" occures. Then when I remove to whole folder and clone it again there are no problems and the new added file(s) are there. Updating and removing doesnt give problems When I do "a" Verify the following is shown: data/test.txt.i@54: missing revlog! 54: empty or missing test.txt test.txt@54: b80de5d13875 in manifests not found 3 integrity errors encountered! (first damaged changeset appears to be 54) Any idea what could be causing this?

    When a library is released under the GPL v2, can a company use it internally for free? If they develop software based on it, do they have to release it under the GPL, even if they don't distribute it? Can they make money by using (not distributing) internally developed software that links to the GPL'ed library, without any compensation for the author? I am looking for a software license that only allows non-commercial uses (copy, modify, link to); the resulting derived programs must also be free for non-commercial uses. Is there any software license that does this for non-commercial uses, and prevents any commercial use (including using the software in order to make money)? It looks like the Creative Commons licenses are flexible enough to do something close to that, but I've read against using them for software. What do you think?

It can be important that: 1) You never know it is in an inconsistent state, so you try for 2 hours trying to debug the code for what's wrong. 2) With all the framework code -- potentially hundreds of files -- if some files are inconsistent with the other, can't the rake db:migrate or script/generate controller cause some damage or inconsistencies to the code base?

  • Maintaining file permissions across SVN updates?

    I have a series of python scripts with execute permissions in Linux. They are stored in SVN. If I then run svn up to update them, the overwritten files are back to 644 - ie no execute permissions for anyone. Yes I could just script it to chmod +x * afterwards, but surely there's a way to store permissions in SVN or to maintain them when you update? Any suggestions appreciated.
