• Alien deletes .deb when converting from .rpm

  I'm trying to convert .rpm to .deb using alien. sudo alien -k libtetra-1.0.0-2.i386.rpm Alien says that: libtetra-1.0.0-2.i386.deb generated But when I check the folder - there is just original .rpm and no .deb. Also - I can see that for a split second there is a .deb file in a folder. so it looks like alien create .deb and deletes it right away. I suspect that it's maybe because I run 64 bit os and package is 32? Can somebody explain why alien deletes .deb automatically? • VS 2010 SP1 BETA – App.config XML Transformation Fix

  The current version for App.config XML tranformations as described in a previous post does not support the SP1 BETA version of Visual Studio. I did some quick tests and decided to provide a different version with a compatibility fix for those already experimenting with the beta release of the service pack. This is a quick workaround to the build errors I found when using the transformations in SP1 beta and is pretty much untested since I’ll wait for the final release of the service pack to take a closer look to any possible problems. But for now, those that already installed SP1 beta can use the following transformations: VS 2010 SP1 BETA – App.config XML Transformation And those with the RTM release of Visual Studio can continue to use the original version of the transformations available from: VS 2010 RTM – App.config XML Transformation

Here are the key highlights: Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (R2) and Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g Release 1 (R1) are immediately available on Oracle Linux 6 with the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel. Oracle Database 11g R2 and Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g R1 will be available on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (RHEL6) and Oracle Linux 6 with the Red Hat Compatible Kernel in 90 days. • GPL: does one line of GPLed code make program a "derived work"

  I've recently run into some argument with a person that claims to be a lawyer (I have my suspicions about this not being completely true, though). As far as I know, copying even one line of code from GPLed program into proprietary body of code requires you to release the whole thing under GPL, if you ever decide to publish the software and make it available to the public. The person in question claims that it is "absurd" (I know it is, but AFAIK that's how GPL works), it is "redefining the copyright", "GPL has no power to do that", and claiming that "one line of GPLed code makes you release the whole thing under GPL" is absurd. That contradicts the GPL FAQ. Can somebody clarify the situation? Am I right in assumption that copying even smallest subroutine from GPL program into your code automatically makes your program a "derived work" which means you are obliged to release it under GPL license if you publish it?

• Cron job fails for any time other than default * * * * *

  On Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot), my cron job run fine if I use the default * * * * * But if I want it to run at 17 hrs or any other time, it never runs. My settings are: 00 17 * * * wget http://www.abc.com/a.php I also tried: 00 17 * * * root wget http://www.abc.com/a.php I also tried specifying the path. • Import images from camera in KDE with particular directory structure

  I have been using f-spot for a few years to manage my photo archive, which is about 50K images at the moment. With the development of f-spot slowing down in the recent years and me switching to KDE, I'm looking at using DigiKam, which seems to be very nice and packed with features beyond my wildest hopes :) One thing I'm missing though is the way f-spot was importing the images: it was creating subdirectories based on the image's shooting date: $HOME/Photos/2011/11/12/IMG_1234.jpg $HOME/Photos/2011/11/13/IMG_1235.jpg $HOME/Photos/2011/11/13/IMG_1236.jpg I don't seem to be able to find a way to make DigiKam to behave like this - although it has some settings to change the image filename according to some mask which may include shooting date, I see now way to tell it to create sub-directories. Is there a way to make DigiKam to behave like this? Or, alternatively, what is a good program to import images from a camera and save them on disk in subdirectories according to their shooting date?

• Can I download & Install the wallpapers from Quantal 12.10 on Precise 12.04.1?

  I was googling regarding Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal); pretty much liked the wallpapers. Just out of curiosity, can I install the wallpapers from a higher release (12.10) on a previous release Precise (12.04.1) without upgrading to 12.10. I have tried the following:- ankit@stream:~$ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-wallpapers-quantal [sudo] password for ankit: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package ubuntu-wallpapers-quantal I have followed this post; but this for installing wallpapers from previous releases on the current release. Any ideas how can this be achieved.

• How to set multiple timezones in Gnome Classic?

  For some strange reason, additional timezones cannot be added to the clock using the date-time indicator in Gnome Classic (Ubuntu 12.04). I used Unity before I switched to Gnome Classic, and it was possible to add more timezones. Even in Gnome Classic I can see the other timezones in the menu of the date-time indicator which I added when I was still using Unity. When I go to System Settings Date and Time, there is no option for adding other timezones. How can I set additional timezones in Gnome Classic?

• Java 7 Adoption at 79%

  According to a recent blog post from the cloud hosting company Jelastic, Java 7 adoption on their platform is now at 79%. While this is a single data point and should not be read too broadly, it does match other indicators we have that Java 7 is picking up, such as uptake among Oracle middleware customers, download statistics and online activity. The spike in adoption in April coincided with the release of JDK 7 Update 4. This is in line with our expectations since that release added Mac OS X support as well as java.com moving to Java 7 as the default download for end-users; two events that marked the maturity of Java 7 to the community. Since the original release of Java 7, Oracle has shipped 7 update releases, added ports to Mac OSX and Linux/ARM and expanded JavaFX to all common desktop platforms.

• Kinetic Scroll in Maverick

  I have Sony VAIO FW 230J laptop. I was using Lucid and upgraded my system to Maverick beta in September 2010. Although there were few issues with beta release on my system although I did not felt myself in any deadlock. The most notable experience on my ubuntu was the smooth and kinetic scrolling and very sensitive touch pad experience with finer control that was oddly normal in previous releases and even on windows 7 currently. Definitely this release of ubuntu is improved for touch UI experience. I believe that this is magic of 10.10. For my official system I waited until the final release was out. After installing (upgrading) official system to Maverick I am not feeling the same smooth and kinetic scroll experience. My laptop has Graphics: Intel DMA-X4500MHD while my official desktop has Graphics: Intel DMA-X4500HD Do I need to install or update some software package to have similar kinetic scroll experience?

  The first positive sign for the platform's developers is the fact that Microsoft made Silverlight 5's release candidate stage available at the beginning of this month. This points to an official final release in the near future. • Oracle GoldenGate 12c - Leading Enterprise Replication

  Oracle GoldenGate 12c released  on October 17th and includes several new cutting edge features that firmly establishes GoldenGate's leader position in the data replication space.   In fact, this release more than doubles the performance of data delivery, supports Oracle's new multitenant database feature,  it's more secure, has more options for high availability, and has made great strides to simplify the configuration and deployment of the product.     Read through the press release if you haven't already and do not miss the quote from Cern's Eva Dafonte Perez, regarding Oracle GoldenGate 12c "….performs five times faster compared to previous GoldenGate versions and simplifies the management of a multi-tier environment" There are a variety of new and improved features in the Oracle GoldenGate 12c.  Here are the highlights: Optimized for Oracle Database 12c -  GoldenGate 12c is custom tailored to the unique capabilities of Oracle database 12c and out of the box GoldenGate 12c supports multitenant (pluggable database (PDB)) and non-consolidated deployments of Oracle Database 12c.   The naming convention used by database 12c is now in three parts (PDB-name, schema-name, and object name).  We have made changes to the GoldenGate capture process to support the new naming convention and streamlined the whole process so a single GoldenGate capture process is being used at the container level rather than at each individual PDB.  By having the capture process at the container level resource usage and the number of processes are reduced. Integrated Delivery for the Oracle Database - Leveraging a lightweight streaming API built exclusively for Oracle GoldenGate 12c, this process distributes load, auto tunes the degree of parallelism, scales better, and delivers blinding rates of changed data delivery to the Oracle database.  One of the goals for Oracle GoldenGate 12c was to reduce IT costs by simplifying the configuration and reduce the time to manage complex infrastructures.  In previous versions of Oracle GoldenGate, customers would split transaction loads by grouping tables into multiple different delivery processes (click here to view the previous method). Each delivery process executed independently and without any interaction or knowledge of other delivery processes.  This setup was complicated to configure and time consuming as the developer needed in-depth knowledge of the source and target schemas and the transaction profile. With GoldenGate 12c and Integrated Delivery we have made it easier to configure and faster to deploy.  To view a conceptual architecture diagram of integrated delivery click here Coordinated Delivery for Non-Oracle Databases - Coordinated Delivery orchestrates high-speed apply processes and simplifies the configuration of GoldenGate for non-Oracle targets. In Oracle GoldenGate 12c a single delivery process is used with multiple threads (click here) and key events, such as primary key updates, event markers, DDL, etc, are coordinated between the various threads to insure that the transactions are applied in the same sequence as they were captured, all while delivery improved performance.  Replication Between On-Premises and Cloud-Based systems. - The trend for business to utilize both on-premises and cloud-based systems is rising and businesses need to replicate data back and forth.   GoldenGate 12c can be configured in a variety of ways to provide real-time replication when unrestricted or restricted (limited ports or HTTP tunneling) networks are between on-premises and cloud-based systems.    Expanded Heterogeneity - It wouldn't be a GoldenGate release without new and improved platform support.   Release 1 includes support for MySQL 5.6 and Sybase 15.7.   Upcoming in the next release GoldenGate, support will be expanded for MS SQL Server, DB2, and Teradata.   The new MS Office and SharePoint release is just around the corner, and I want to assure everyone that we will provide full support for SP 2010 in our next RadControls release - Q2 2010. We have already put up a page with information about the new SP release. You can find all the information you need at the SharePoint product page on our site. In this post I will talk about the ASP.NET AJAX controls, but as you will see on the product page, we will also offer support for our Silverlight UI controls.   The most important thing I want to share is that the RadEditor for MOSS product will updated for the 2010 version and you can already get a beta version from your account (provided you have a license for the ASP.NET AJAX controls).
