    EDIT: Related question here: Multi theme support in android app I'm attempting to get a user-chosen theme and feel like I'm frustratingly close. Defining the theme in AndroidManifest.xml works as it should, but (as best I can tell) can't change based on app preferences: <application android:theme="@style/theme_sunshine" android:icon="@drawable/icon" android:label="@string/app_name"> Alternatively, setting it dynamically in each activity also works: someChosenTheme = PreferenceManager.getDefaultSharedPreferences(this).getString("themePreference", "theme_twilight"); setTheme(someOtherChosenTheme); But that seems messy, and I'd rather set the theme for the entire app in one place. My first thought was to grab the application context as soon as my main activity launches and do it there: getApplicationContext().setTheme(R.style.theme_dummy); As best I can tell[0], this ought to do the trick, but in fact it's not doing anything--the entire app has the default Android style. Is the above valid, and if so, might I be doing something else dumb? I'm working in API level 3 if that matters. Prods in the right direction greatly appreciated!   • Unordered list appears higher than div

    I am trying to create a simple page, which I normally can without any trouble. However, the unordered list appears higher up the page than the div. I do know a solution for this, however I cannot remember it.     Here is the smallest amount of code that clearly illustrates my problem: <html> <body> <div style="float: left; width: 200px;">One</div> <div style="float: left; width: 200px;">Two</div> <div style="background-color: #f0f;">Three</div> </body> </html> The first 2 divs are supposed to be 2 left columns. The 3rd should take up the rest of the page. Eventually, I'm going to add options to hide and show the 2 columns on the left. But, why is the color purple extending all the way to the browser's left edge? I am trying to get it to start at the word "Three".

    Using Bootstrap 3, I have an element on a page I want to show later in response to the user clicking a button. Example: <div id="search_results"> ... gets populated from ajax data later ... </div> <button id="search_button" type="button" class="btn btn-primary pull-right">Search</button> <script> $('#search_button').click(function() { // ... do the call to search // and in the callback: $('#search_results').show(); }); </script> The search_results div should be initially hidden. Is there some normal/best practice way of doing this with bootstrap? Yes, I do realize I can just put style="display:none" on search_results, but is that the best way to do it? It would seem to be a bit better to have a style that semantically means "initially hidden". (NOTE: The hidden or hide classes don't do this as they are !important and show(), toggle(), etc. use an inline style which does not override them, i.e. setting "hidden" as the class makes it unshowable from jQuery.)

Under IE8 (i don't have the chance, neither i do really want, to test under IE7, IE9 and so on...) are displayed two vertical scrollbars one next to the other: Is there a solution to this crap?

    I've got a parent div floated left, with two child divs that I need to float right. The parent div should (if I understand the spec correctly) be as wide as needed to contain the child divs, and this is how it behaves in Firefox et al. In IE, the parent div expands to 100% width. This seems to be an issue with floated elements that have children floated right.   • CSS 100% height with padding/margin

    This has been driving me crazy for a couple of days now, but in reality it's a problem that I've hit off and on for the last few years: With HTML/CSS how can I make an element that has a width and/or height that is 100% of it's parent element and still has proper padding or margins? By "proper" I mean that if my parent element is 200px tall and I specify 100% height with 5px padding I would expect that I should get a 190px high element with 5px "border" on all sides, nicely centered in the parent element. Now, I know that that's not how the standard box model specifies it should work (although I'd like to know why, exactly...), so the obvious answer doesn't work: #myDiv { width: 100% height: 100%; padding: 5px; } But it would seem to me that there must be SOME way of reliably producing this effect for a parent of arbitrary size. Does anyone know of a way of accomplishing this (seemingly simple) task? Oh, and for the record I'm not terribly interested in IE compatibility so that should (hopefully) make things a bit easier. EDIT: Since an example was asked for, here's the simplest one I can think of: <html style="height: 100%"> <body style="height: 100%"> <div style="background-color: black; height: 100%; padding: 25px"></div> </body> </html> The challenge is then to get the black box to show up with a 25 pixel padding on all edges without the page growing big enough to require scrollbars.

    I'm following the Getting Started with Rails guide but ran into an issue opening http://localhost:3000 Shell output: [2010-03-23 19:19:14] ERROR NameError: uninitialized constant ActiveResource::Base Error in the browser: Internal Server Error uninitialized constant ActiveResource::Base WEBrick/1.3.1 (Ruby/1.8.7/2009-06-12) at localhost:3000 I followed the directions exactly as they were specified in the guide: Ran rails generate controller home index I removed index.html Added root :to = "home#index" to config/routes.rb I checked app/views/home/index.html.erb and it is indeed there. I then used rails server to launch the server. At first attempt the browser loads a blank page, but afterwards starts showing the browser error above. Why is it that Rails can't locate the index.html.erb file? Or is the error something different? - Running Rails 3.0beta with Ruby 1.8.7

    It seems that all of the initial Google results for "using subversion with xcode" are actually just tutorials for installing and configuring svn and Xcode, as opposed to actually using the two (i.e. interacting with svn via Xcode's GUI). Is anyone aware of a good guide that teaches the tricks and pitfalls of working with svn via Xcode's GUI? Something that bridges the gap between the most excellent Version Control with Subversion book and the Xcode IDE (as in pure Xcode GUI without any terminal command use)? Edit: We all love our terminal commands, and we all love Eclipse but (and I mean this in the nicest possible way) neither is really the point of the question. I’d prefer to use svn via Xcode’s IDE instead of via terminal just as I prefer (well, for this case) to code in Xcode’s IDE instead of using vim and gcc. Apple engineers spent a good bit of time implementing that SCM menu in Xcode; someone has to have seen a usage guide somewhere.

  • Malloc to a CGPoint Pointer throwing EXC_BAD_ACCESS when accessing

    I am trying to use a snippet of code from a Apple programming guide, and I am getting a EXC_BAD_ACCESS when trying to pass a pointer to a function, right after doing a malloc. (For Reference: iPhone Application Programming Guide: Event Handling - Listing 3-6) The code in question is really simple: CFMutableDictionaryRef touchBeginPoints; UITouch *touch; .... CGPoint *point = (CGPoint *)CFDictionaryGetValue(touchBeginPoints, touch); if (point == NULL) { point = (CGPoint *)malloc(sizeof(CGPoint)); CFDictionarySetValue(touchBeginPoints, touch, point); } Now when the program goes into the if statement it assigns the 'output' of malloc into the point variable/pointer. Then when it tries to pass point into the CFDictionarySetValue function it crashes the application with: Program received signal: “EXC_BAD_ACCESS”. Someone suggested not doing the malloc and pass the point var/pointer as: &point, however that still gave me a EXC_BAD_ACCESS. What I am (and it looks like Apple) doing wrong??? Thanks in advance.

    Hi, As Android supports multiple devices from different manufacturers there are different screen resolutions supported. The table that is available at http://developer.android.com/intl/fr/guide/practices/screens_support.... is not very clear to me. It shows WVGA and FWVGA in MDPI for Large Screens and HDPI for Normal screens. So, if the image is kept in drawable-mdpi and its resolution is 320 * 480 then which image will be taken by Large Screens device of MDPI. Moreover, there are two screen resolutions for HDPI i.e. 480 * 800 and 480 * 854. So, with what screen resolution the image should be built. I want to place the background image which looks distorted in WVGA emulator since its resolution is 320 * 480. I have read about nine patchable images but I think they are better for button images and edittext images so that they can stretch according to the data in it. Can someone please guide me in this?   • Linking Boost to my C++ project in Eclipse

    I'm trying to get the Boost library working in my C++ projects in Eclipse. I can successfully build when using header-only libraries in Boost such as the example simple program in the "Getting Started" guide using the lambda header. I cannot get my project to successfully link to the regex Boost library as shown later in the guide. Under my project properties - c/c++ build - settings - tool settings tab - libraries, I have added "libboost_regex" to the Libraries box, and "C:\Program Files\boost\boost_1_42_0\bin.v2\libs" to the Library search path box since this is where all the .lib files are. I've even tried adding "libboost_regex-mgw34-mt-d-1_42.lib" to the libraries box instead of "libboost_regex" since that is the exact file name, but this did not work either. I keep getting an error that says "cannot find -llibboost_regex" when I try to build my project. Any ideas as to how I can fix this?
