• IIS 6 Ram Allocation on Windows Server 2003

  0 down vote favorite share [g+] share [fb] share [tw] I have my IIS 6 running my website. It is on a Windows Server 2003 which has 4GB of RAM. I run SQL intensive code after the user submits a form (math statistics stuff). This process is not threaded (should it be, especially if 2 or more users run the same thing?). But my process seems to consume only a couple of GBs of memory and the server crawls. How do I get my IIS process to use nearly all the memory? I see on other sites that its 2GB or 3GB allocated using boot.ini. But is there another way for the process to use memory? If I make it multithreaded, will there be a process for each thread?

• Configuring port forwarding on Fortigate 50B

  I can't for the life of me get port forwarding to work on my Fortigate 50B. I followed the setup tips described on this other SF thread with no success. The only specific difference I can find is we are using load balancing through 2 different internet uplinks. Is there any caveat specific to this scenario that I might be missing? If you need any specific additional information please ask because I think I have checked everything: Virtual IP mapping on external interface wan1 ACCEPT all from any on wan1 to the corresponding server on internal No seeming offending firewall rules (any specific pitfalls that I might want to check for?)

• Outlook - responding with a pre-defined message

  I am trying to be able to reply to an email with a pre-defined message. Every day, I get asked to do the same tasks and I have to reply to each with exactly the same email, similar to: Hi, I received your email, I have now started the task for you. Regards, Dave Tutorials I have found using the email template is more about starting a new email as opposed to replying (as it doesn't appear to keep the thread). In my ideal world, I would like to click reply and insert a pre-written message. The only way I've worked out how to do this is to 'cheat' some what and use the signature as the entire email response (and actually does the job very well other than leaving a space above my reply) I have found similar questions on Super User and other websites but have had no luck, nor have I from my own Google searches. Does any one have any other solutions? Solved This is now solved - in 2 days from this post I can mark it as answer.

• Plug and Go NAS Storage

  My wife and I are separating. One of the things we need to extricate is the media we have accumulated over the years. So I am looking for a NAS solution that is a) relatively low-cost, b) reliable and c) easy for a non-geek to use (I don't want to be tech support). All it needs to do is hold our iTunes library, photos, course work and maybe some movies and TV shows that I currently have. She will be connecting via her Netbook. I have seen this thread but the reviews on Amazon aren't particularly favourable. Due to the need for simplicity, WHS and FreeNAS are none-starters. I need redundancy as if a single drive system was to die then she would lose her course work and photos. Is the ReadyNAS the only real solution out there?

• 'DNS server isn't responding' error in windows 7 home premium

  Hi All, I bought a brand new Dell Studio 1558 just last week. It has windows 7 home premium 64-bit installed on it. My friend who is occupying the adjacent room has a laptop with windows XP. Both of us are connecting to the same wireless router of the hotel. My friend is able to connect to the wireless network without any trouble, but when I try to connect, I get the error "DNS service isn't responding". I get this error when I run the troubleshooting option. I met two more people in the same hotel with win XP laptop and they too dont have any problem. I have gone to possibly all the forums and website but I haven't been able to fix this error :(. I have done all the basic troubleshooting but I have no luck yet. Pls help. • How to reuse backup on Time Machine on Snow Leopard after a logic board change, after choosing wrong

  After my logic board was replaced, I connected my laptop back to my network, and Time Machine gave me a popup, as shown on this thread: http://superuser.com/questions/78068/recycle-time-machine-for-new-machine/78264#78264 I misread the question and clicked on "Create New Backup" when I should have clicked on "Reuse Backup" to connect to my old backup file. How can I trigger that popup again? Turning Time Machine on and off does not work, and the instructions on forums to fix via terminal doesn't work because snow leopard is missing the fsaclctl command (and I'm also not familiar with terminal commands.)   Hello, I'm having trouble installing mod_xsendfile on MAMP. • can't add sharepoint users from trusted domain

  I have a very strange problem with our Sharepoint 2007 implementation. I went in today to grant access to a user and was greeted with "The user does not exist or is not unique." Let me start off by saying that this user is not on our domain we have a 2 way trust connecting to one of our subsidiaries. I can see the users in the people pick but can't add them into Sharepoint. This problem flared up after we had some trust issues last two days ago. So I must ask has anyone came across this error and if so what steps did you take to resolve it? • Set a custom favicon locally, that carries across the entire site.

  Is there a way to add a custom favicon to an App Tab? In the above thread, @admintech links to a great plugin for changing favicons which covers both the bookmarks folder and the address bar/tab bar icons. However, it still does not quite fully address what I was hoping to accomplish. I'd like to set an App Tab that has a customized icon, that stays the same in that tab no matter what I do there. Since the navigation within an App Tab is very restricted, the chosen favicon should always be relevant to whatever page is loaded in that tab. The Bookmark Favicon Changer has been effective in allowing me to use a custom favicon in the App Tab. But, the favicon only applies to the specific URL that was bookmarked. Any navigation done from that page will return the favicon to blank. Is there another plugin, or perhaps some special tweak to this plugin or the bookmark itself, that will allow me to make the favicon more persistent across the site?

• MongoDB on FreeBSD

  We are currently using MongoDB 2.0.0 on MacOS but our servers are running FreeBSD. The most recent port of MongoDB is the 1.8.3 version. I have tried to compile the 2.0.0 by hand but I came across errors that I didn't manage to fix. I came across on the Internet a few old resources which are saying that MongoDB does not run well on FreeBSD mainly for performance issue (memory mapped files). Is that true ? Does it mean we have to switch our server to another OS ? Thanks for your opinions! • How do I establish the network sharing to my WinXP server network drive from my Mac notebook?

  I have been able to connect to my WinXP server's shared drives by using Finder's Command-K to browse the network. Unfortunately, when the server gets rebooted, the connection drops and sometimes I cannot get reconnected. I have specified different protocols (afp / cifs / smb) and different login names (connect as...) with limited success. Once I find the right combination, I am good for a few weeks. Once, it seems as though I had to unshared and shared the drive to get it to work. Unfortunately, it is very frustrating, so I try multiple things at one time, so when I finally get to the success point -- I honestly don't know what worked. I followed Mac help, surfed for instructions, issues, etc., but nothing appears to be consistent. I would love for this thread to be the ultimate answer for all time! Can anyone help me? If my description or question need more detail, please ask away!

• 12-24 rack, 10-32 server thumbscrew. How to mount?

  We have just purchased a APC rack (model AR204A) with 12-24 threaded holes. We couldn't get a "square hole" model in time for our setup deadline. Unfortunately our rack servers (Lenovo RD240) appear to have 10-32 thumbscrews for securing the server to the rack. We've successfully mounted the server rails to the rack using 12-24 screws however the 10-32 thumbscrews in the server front won't "grab" the 12-24 holes in the rack, thus there is nothing to stop the server from sliding right off the rack if pushed from the back. The thumb screws on the server don't seem to be removable, so we can't simply use 12-24 screws instead. Any suggestions on how to work around this problem? Is there any way to "convert" a 12-24 hole to a 10-32 thread (or similar approach)? Thanks in advance.

• Moving a Drupal between linux servers, best practice to avoid file-ownership problems

  I want to port over a Drupal commons 6x24 from a local LAMP-stack to a production webserver. Both systems run OpenSuse Linux. How do I do this, what are the most important steps. How should I handle file-ownership. It's important for me to have to have full control of the file ownership. • Windows 7 x64: 3900mb of 4gb RAM usage, even when (almost) nothing running.

  As the title suggests, I am having a problem with memory usage. I have had my computer (Vaio AW11Z/B laptop) for over a year now, and it was running perfectly until I guess a day or two ago. Now programs randomly crash, the mouse lags around the screen and the memory usage is going through the roof for no apparent reason. I am having exactly the same problem as this guy: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7performance/thread/1f716693-0a46-473e-9dc0-8c2b1a058443/. I think he explains it better. Anyone had a similar issue? What's going on? I don't think it's a virus/adware thing. Thanks very much for any help.

• Alt-tab icon list in Gnome and metacity?

  Can anyone provide a reference or explain how the icons to the alt-tab list is populated? I would like to specify some icons for some programs that do not have icons, e.g. xterm. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 with Gnome 2 (Ubuntu Classic) and metacity as the window manager. I did see this thread that mentions /usr/share/pixmap/, but if I use cp gnome-terminal.xpm xterm.xpm the icon was not populated in the alt-tab icon list (even after a logout/login). I do see that the icon is populated when I added the xterm command to the Program Menu.

• Lingering database-connections from Feng Office

  I've installed Feng Office on our main server which is working perfectly so far. Unfortunately it seems like there's a problem with the connection to the MySQL-Database. While the connection itself works fine, it's the reuse/pooling of connections which seems to be bugged. There are lingering/sleeping connections to the server from Feng Office which won't close and don't get reused after some time (120 seconds). Of course those lingering processes/connections are piling up pretty fast. I've found a thread at the forums about this behavior, but the suggested fix is already applied (by default). I'm sure this is just a configuration issue, but I'm a little clue less because Feng is besides a MediaWiki, a DokuWiki and homebrewed PHP applications the only one with this issue. The setup is a Microsoft Windows 2003 Server with MySQL 5.0.26 and Apache 2.2. Where can I start looking for clues why this is happening and how do I get rid of lingering MySQL-Connections?

The server send to client 3KB of data, instead of traditional HTTP or SOCKS proxy, the server open multithreaded transfer with 3 connections, send 1KB of data per thread to each connection The client receives 1KBx3, and combine them to the original 3KB data, and return as a local HTTP proxy server. The client display the original data in browser via the local HTTP proxy The latency is not important as long as the transfer rate is good. Does any software like this exist? It's better if it's open source or free ones.

  I'm a lone web developer with my own Centos VPS hosting a few small web sites for my clients. Today I discovered my httpd service had stopped (for no apparent reason - but that's another thread). I restarted it but now I need to find a way that I can be notified by email and/or SMS if it happens again - I don't like it when my client rings me to tell me their web site doesn't work! I know there are probably many different possibilities, including server monitoring software. I think all I really need is a script that I can run as a cron job from my dev host (which is permanently running in my office) that attempts to load a page from my production server and if it doesn't load within say 30 seconds then it sends me an email or SMS. I'm pretty rubbish at shell scripting, hence this question. Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated, thanks to all you clever sysadmin guys and girls out there :)

• Java sound doesn't work under Linux

  I just installed Fedora 12 and after downloading and running the Java Sound Demo I get exceptions. If I run just a vanilla Java program that plays a .wav file it runs silently with no sound and no exceptions. Every other app seems to play sound. I also took some advice from this thread in the Ubuntu forums which almost seemed to work. (Installing aoss got rid of the initial exceptions in the sound demo but I still hear nothing when I play.) I'm getting frustrated by the individual hoops I have to go through to eek sound out of my speakers when running Java apps on Linux platforms! Can somebody help me figure out what's wrong?

• Memory limit on PHP + Apache + Windows 32 bit?

  I am considering using Apache 32-bit for a Moodle installation on a Windows 2008 R2 64-bit/16GB server. Since the available memory affects the number of concurrent of users that can be served, I was wondering how the 2GB memory limit on 32-bit Windows processes affects Apache+PHP. Is it a collective limit for the whole server, or is it applied separately for each Apache child process/thread? If it is separate, how many of those children are launched on Windows? One per request? One per processor core? Something in the middle? Is this somehow configurable?

• How to migrate KVM based VMs running in LVM setup to Vmdk images

  I am using KVM on Ubuntu Server 10.04. and Virtual Machines are running on it in LVM. I have to migrate some of them to Vmware server.How can I achieve this? I searched and came across some links but they all talked converting vmdk images to qcow or so.In this case I have OS in LVM. I also looked at man page of qemu-img and as I understand it should do what I am asking in this thread. But how exactly should I proceed in this case.Since it is not a file based image (OS running in an LVM which has filesystem in that LVM). So I am not able to understand what should I be doing to achieve the same. Can I achieve the above with snapshots of LVMs rather than shutting down the VM itself.

  On my Debian Linux machine Ctrl+Alt+F1 is bound to a virtual terminal. I can see the corresponding entry by running xmodmap -pke keycode 67 = F1 XF86_Switch_VT_1 F1 XF86_Switch_VT_1 Per this thread, which I might add is consistent with what I've read elsewhere, the columns on the right hand side of = correspond to key, Shift+key, AltGr+key and Shift+AltGr+key. Given that, I don't understand how the keycode mapping for F1 (above) works for Ctrl+Alt+F1. It seems it should really be either Shift+F1 or Shift+AltGr+F1?
