• How to migrate KVM based VMs running in LVM setup to Vmdk images

  I am using KVM on Ubuntu Server 10.04. and Virtual Machines are running on it in LVM. I have to migrate some of them to Vmware server.How can I achieve this? I searched and came across some links but they all talked converting vmdk images to qcow or so.In this case I have OS in LVM. I also looked at man page of qemu-img and as I understand it should do what I am asking in this thread. But how exactly should I proceed in this case.Since it is not a file based image (OS running in an LVM which has filesystem in that LVM). So I am not able to understand what should I be doing to achieve the same. Can I achieve the above with snapshots of LVMs rather than shutting down the VM itself.

  On my Debian Linux machine Ctrl+Alt+F1 is bound to a virtual terminal. I can see the corresponding entry by running xmodmap -pke keycode 67 = F1 XF86_Switch_VT_1 F1 XF86_Switch_VT_1 Per this thread, which I might add is consistent with what I've read elsewhere, the columns on the right hand side of = correspond to key, Shift+key, AltGr+key and Shift+AltGr+key. Given that, I don't understand how the keycode mapping for F1 (above) works for Ctrl+Alt+F1. It seems it should really be either Shift+F1 or Shift+AltGr+F1? Here's the output of xmodmap -pm on my machine: shift Shift_L (0x32), Shift_R (0x3e) lock Caps_Lock (0x25) control Control_L (0x42), Control_R (0x69) mod1 Alt_L (0x40), Alt_R (0x6c), Meta_L (0xcd) mod2 Num_Lock (0x4d) mod3 mod4 Super_L (0x85), Super_R (0x86), Super_L (0xce), Hyper_L (0xcf) mod5 ISO_Level3_Shift (0x5c), Mode_switch (0xcb) Can anybody explain it?

  Hi this is a repeat of the question: Excel: Find Items in one column that are not in another column I have two columns in excel, and I want to find (preferably highlight) the items that are in column B, but not in column A. What's the quickest way to do this? However, the answer given below to in the above-menitoned thread no longer applies to Mac Excel 2011. • Is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 Video Card Compatbile with a Mac Pro Running Windows 7 Pro 64?

  I have a Mac Pro (early 2008) and I'm running Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) natively (i.e., with just Windows installed and no OSX or boot camp) on it. If I buy an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 video card, will it work or do I have to buy a card that is Mac-specific (e.g., GeForce GTX 285 'for Mac')? Also, more generally, will Windows video cards work on Intel Macs running Windows (in case I pick a cheaper card)? I can't tell if it matters that a Mac does not have a bios. I searched other boards and I gathered that video cards would work fine because Windows has the proper drivers for them and OSX doesn't and not having the BIOS doesn't make a difference. I found one thread on here that seemed to indicate that as well, but I wanted to make sure. Thanks.

  Every now and then, often when I write a post on my Dreamhost DreamPress WordPress blog I get this Varnish related error: Error 503 Service Unavailable Service Unavailable Guru Meditation: XID: 180706672 Varnish cache server I did a related post here Varnish & ISPConfig under Debian give error 503 but they only tell me it could be an Apache Virtual Hosts issue and that the defined hosts should be checked. But that thread was on a different XID and just a comment, not an accepted solution. So perhaps this situation is different. Any ideas?

• Windows 7 blocks network access to network-installed apps

  Windows 2008 R2 domain. Users, running Windows 7 Enterprise, are trying to run some software from a network share. Specifically, I've tested this with MATLAB and PuTTY. When starting, MATLAB has to contact a licensing server to get its license. This action fails for regular users when they start MATLAB from the network share. However, if they copy the installation directory to a local disk everything works fine. Running MATLAB as an admin user from the network share also works. Same story with PuTTY. If the executable is launched from the share, regular users cannot connect to any servers. Something is blocking network communications for programs that are launched from a network drive. • Nginx (for static files) and Apache (for dynamic content)?

  So, my entire application runs on apache just fine. However, I want to test how much the requests per second increases if I put all static files through nginx instead. I found this thread: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/869001/how-to-serve-all-existing-static-files-directly-with-nginx-but-proxy-to-apache-t But I have a couple problems. I'm completely new to nginx, so I'm not sure where to put the configuration. (The file is at /etc/nginx/nginx.conf, but I don't know if I just add the code to the bottom or what?) Also, how can I have both servers running at the same time? Is it because they both listen on port 80? Right now I have to stop one to start the other, and that's as far as I've gotten. • Easily manage vsftpd virtual users?

  I have a vsftpd server configured with many virtual users. logins are stored in a Berkeley DB file One configuration file exists for each user to define his permissions (read-only or read-write, home directory, etc.). To do that, I use the user_config_dir parameter (set in vsftpd.conf). I am wondering if it would be possible to manage these virtual users from a simple GUI (such as web interface). I have found some tools but they are limited to generic vsftpd configuration, not virtual users management. Otherwise, PAM-MySQL seems to be a good way to manage users efficiently but only username/password and logs can be stored in database, not permissions. Finally, I've found this thread, but the solution is a bit awkward... Is there any way to easily manage the vsftpd users ?

• Windows 7 XPS Document Writer has stopped working

  I have successfully used the Windows 7 XPS Document writer for quite a while under windows 7 (64 bit). Now however when i try to print i get prompted twice for the output file name and then get different error messages depending upon the application being used. e.g. Notepad gives a 'The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request'. I have disabled and reenabled the XPS facilities of windows features and have similiarly removed and readded the printer. But the end result is the same. I've uninstalled all applications i have installed since the time when i know it worked but this also has not made any difference. Suggestions please!

• Firefox loses app tabs when I shut down my computer sometimes

  When I shut down my computer sometimes my app tabs do not reopen in Firefox and I need to remake all of them which is pretty annoying. I don't know if this is a common bug it might be specific to my computer. I run Vista x64 and it just seems to still have quite a bit of problems. Sometimes when I command it to shut down it does not simply showing shut down loading for hours so I need to manually turn it off. I think that might be messing up Firefox but I'm not sure. I also found a related thread on Bugzilla about this problem but I don't think it's the same issue as it only happens when I shut down my computer.

• How do you access usermin

  I have recently setup a web server with webmin, virtualmin and usermin on CentOS to host some websites and email, however I am unable to access usermin. I can access webmin from www.foobar.com:10000 but I can't access usermin from www.foobar.com:20000 This thread seems to have dealt within the same issue, however when I tried the command "telnet localhost 20000" it came back with a connection refused message. Any idea how to get this running. I'll let you know in advance that I am a linux newbie and this is a large learning experience, so don't rule out anything if you are thinking "oh, but he wouldn't be dumb enough to forget that" or the like

• Multithreaded Windows FOR batch command

  Hi, do you know if there is a simple way to run FOR command in batch file on multiple threads? What's the point of having 4 cores if I can't run my tasks in 4 parallel threads? For example, if I am optimizing PNGs with PNGOUT, the command I would use is for %i in (*.png) do pngout "%i" But this is highly paralellizable task in which the sub-tasks do not depend on each other at all. To run this in 4 'queues' I'd write something like for -thread 4 %i in (*.png) do pngout "%i" Do I need to write my own for-like app that would be able to do this or is there available free solution?

• after power outage, monitor won't turn on

  I had a power outage in my apartment today during a Windows 7 SP1 update. I installed SP1 and it told me to restart so I did and that's when the power outage happened. After the power came back on, I started the computer and it looks like the computer is running normally but my monitor is not getting a signal. I am using a Wacom Cintiq 21UX. I tried unplugging all the cords and plugs in the power strip and turning it back on. I also tried a strange method I read in another thread of removing the power cord, holding the on button for 30 seconds, putting the power cord back in, and turning it on. Still no dice. How can I get my monitor to turn on? please help..

• How can I search for Gmail conversations that have more than one e-mail? [closed]

  I previously used a service that sent me Slashdot articles as individual e-mails. All I had to do was give them the RSS url, and they handled the rest. On the Gmail side, I simply made a filter, labeling these e-mails as "News". Once I stopped using the service, I realized that I had more than 20,000 such e-mails stockpiled. While I could delete all "News" e-mails, there are some that I've forwarded to friends, sometimes receiving multiple replies. These conversations are valuable - I would like to keep them. As far as I can tell, there's no way to search for conversations that have more than one e-mail in the thread. Up until now, I've been deleting them page by page, carefully de-selecting the conversations that have more than one e-mail; however, it will take far too much time to complete. Is there an easier way that I'm missing? Thanks.

• Should I format USB sticks and SD cards to FAT, FAT32, exFAT or NTFS? (Windows files, live Linux distors)

  Does it depend on the media size which one to chose or on some other parameters? In Windows 7 FAT16 is the default. In pendrivelinux.com's Universal USB Installer FAT32. Which one to chose? How about NTFS for Windows use? How about exFAT? It is tne Microsoft designed filesystem for removable media. Is there a difference in USB sticks and SD cards in this regard? Edit: seeing developments in the other thread, should I still use something like exFAT if I don't want Recycle bins created on every single machine I plug my USB thumb drive in?

• 'DNS service isn't responding' in windows 7

  Hi All, I bought a brand new Dell Studio 1558 just last week. It has windows 7 home premium 64-bit installed on it. My friend who is occupying the adjacent room has a laptop with windows XP. Both of us are connecting to the same wireless router of the hotel. My friend is able to connect to the wireless network without any trouble, but when I try to connect, I get the error "DNS service isn't responding". I met two more people in the same hotel with win XP laptop and they too dont have any problem. I have gone to possibly all the forums and website but I haven't been able to fix this error :(. I have done all the basic troubleshooting but I have no luck yet. Pls help. • How do you synchronise huge sparse files (VM disk images) between machines?

  Is there a command, such as rsync, which can synchronise huge, sparse, files from one linux server to another? It is very important that the destination file remains sparse. It may be longer (but not bigger) than the drive which contains it. Only changed blocks should be sent across the wire. • Gentoo+urxvt+terminus: How do I change font version?

  In my Debian installation I can type extended ASCII characters such as åäö by default using the terminus font, however in Gentoo I can't get it to work so far. Nothing happens when I hit those keys, like in this thread: Missing glyphs in Terminus font, how to setup a fallback font ? But in this case I know terminus supports those characters in at least some of its versions, since it's works in Debian. So what I want is to find out how to see and choose which of the many different terminus font files is being used. I set the font in the same way on both Debian and Gentoo, using URxvt*font: xft:terminus:size=xx in .Xdefaults. Both systems use en_US.UTF-8 as default locale.

• How to fix incorrect margins when printing from Windows 7?

  My printer is a HP Photosmart 2575. When I print from my Windows XP the margins are all ok, but when I print from my Windows 7 laptop the top margin is 2x larger for the same document, and as a result the bottom is cropped. • Server 2008 SP1 VSS Writers Not Responding

  I've got a Windows Server 08 box on SP1 that is having some problems. We've experienced backup problems and I've traced it down to VSS Writers not responding. From the command line, if I type vssadmin list providers, I get Provider name: 'Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0' Provider type: System Provider Id: {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5} Version: 1.0.0.7 If I type vssadmin list writers, I get this vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool (C) Copyright 2001-2005 Microsoft Corp. Waiting for responses. These may be delayed if a shadow copy is being prepared. I could wait this out for hours and it won't move. • How to know what dll or services taskhost.exe is hosting?

  I have recently discover a new process in the task manager : taskhost.exe (maybe it was there before but i did not notice it) As the name implies, it seems to be used for running dll in background (like rundll32.exe). Is there a way to know which dll / services this process is hosting ? i would like to know for which purpose it is used and if there is some malware or not. I know it is possible to see which services svchost.exe process is hosting using process explorer utility. I have checked taskhost.exe threads and their stacks using process explorer, here is what i get : So it seems it is used for sound (winmm + playsndsrv). But there is also other things for which very few information is provided (ex : thread 1456, taskhost.exe as start address and nothing relevant can be found in stack (same for 1464, 2272 and so). So maybe it is not the right way to do.

• eCryptfs on ubuntu server : How to keep the home mounted without being over ssh?

  I have a daemon program who need to read in a file who is saved somewhere in my home folder. But every time I close my ssh connection, this daemon can't read the file because it appear that eCryptfs unmount the home. Maybe there is an option to force eCryptfs to not only mount with an ssh connection ? I didn't found it. Thanks. • Can't execute java files on command prompts when they work perfectly in Eclipse IDE, what to do?

  I run the following code in Eclipse IDE: public class HelloWorld { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println("Hello World!" ) ; } } And it renders the expected output. When getting into the command prompt (DOS) already in the directory, I type this javac HelloWorld.java And then this java HelloWorld And the output reads Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: HelloWorld <wrong name:learning/HelloWorld> With a whole lot more errors, learning being the name of my general package. What's wrong? I have installed Eclipse x86 SDK 4.2.0 together bit with the latest JRE and JDK both in 64 bit as well.
