• Basic help needed with pointers (double indirection)

  Hi, i asked some time ago on an account i cant remember how to manipulate basic pointers and someone gave me a really good demo for example char *ptr = "hello" (hello = a char array) so now *ptr is pointing at h ptr++ = moves the ptr to point at the next element, to get its value i do *ptr and that gives me e ok so far i hope :D but now i need to manipulate a char **ptr and was wondering how I do this in a way that mimmicks the effects of a 2d array? some basic tips would be much appreciated as I need to do an assignment that has a **ptr to imitate a 2d array and without knowing how it does this first means I cant even solve it on paper (for example, how do you dereference a **ptr, how do you get [x][y] values etc) thanks

• Figuring out what makes a C++ class abstract in VS2008

  I'm using VS2008 to build a plain old C++ program (not C++/CLI). I have an abstract base class and a non-abstract derived class, and building this: Base* obj; obj = new Derived(); fails with the error "'Derived': cannot instantiate abstract class". (It may be worth noting, however, that if I hover over Base with the cursor, VS will pop up a tooltip saying "class Base abstract", but hovering over Derived will only say "class Derived" (no "abstract")). The definitions of these classes are fairly large and I'd like to avoid manually checking if each method has been overridden. Can VS do this for me somehow? Any general tips on pinpointing the exact parts of the class' definition that make it abstract?

  When I ask a question here, the tool tips for the question returned by the auto search given the first little bit of the question, but a decent percentage of them don't give any text that is any more useful for understanding the question than the title. Does anyone have an idea about how to make a filter to trim out useless bits of a question? My first idea is to trim any leading sentences that contain only words in some list (for instance, stop words, plus words from the title, plus words from the SO corpus that have very weak correlation with tags, that is that are equally likely to occur in any question regardless of it's tags)

  I expected these generators to be available: $ rails g Usage: rails generate GENERATOR [args] [options] MiniTest: mini_test:controller mini_test:helper mini_test:install mini_test:mailer mini_test:model mini_test:scaffold So I ran: $ rails g mini_test:install But got this error: Could not find generator mini_test:install. As for my environment, here is the relevant portion of my Gemfile: group :test, :development do gem 'minitest-rails' end And the resulting portions of my Gemfile.lock: minitest (2.12.1) minitest-rails (0.0.7) minitest (~> 2.12) rails (~> 3.1) I am now in the process of debugging this. I would appreciate any tips. In any case, I will report back.

• WPF tooltip best practices

  I'm about to change my application to include tool tips for all buttons, combo boxes, etc. I was wondering if there are any recommendations on doing this. For every control I'd like the tooltip to show the control's name in bold, followed by the description. I want to keep the style separated from the control, so I can change the tooltip style globally. What I would like to have, unless there's a better suggestion, is two additional fields per button/combobox/etc: 1-ToolTipName and 2-ToolTipDesc, both containing a string. How can I accomplish this (and is it even possible?).

• C# TabControl - is it possible to "disable" individual TabPages?

  Is it somehow possible to disable one (or more) tabs of tab control? At some point I need to make user stay on the active tab and prevent him from leaving... I know I can disable the whole TabControl component, but that disables also all components on active tab... I also tried to use the Selecting method of TabControl: private void TabControl_Selecting(object sender, TabControlCancelEventArgs e) { e.Cancel = PreventTabSwitch; } This works, prevents user from switching (if PreventTabSwitch==true), but since all tabs look active and just don't react it's confusing... There is no Enabled property for individual tab pages, so I don't know what else to do... Thanks a lot for in advance for all tips.

• Hibernate Unit tests - Reset schema

  Hi, I'm testing the CRUD operations of my DAOs in JUnit tests. When i execute the single test, Hibernate always resets the schema and populates the DB in a known state. But when i execute multiple tests in a row, Hibernate resets the schema once, and then the data is accumulated during the execution of the tests. This is an unexpected behavior, so I'd like to add in the @Before method of the tests a function that explicitly resets the schema to avoid the pesistence of side data created by previous tests during the execution chain. • Get Data from Windows Form into C# program

  I want my C# program to collect data. Then, when the OK button is clicked, I want this data to be loaded into my program -- such as into variables in Main(), or into data members of a class I have constructed, and I want the form to then go away -- not be hidden, but actually closed. Alas, read as I might in the book I have, the data collected by the form stays in the form, execution proceeds within the form, and the same form is used to display the result of the program's computations. Sheesh. All I want is to capture the form's information, close the form and proceed with my program. I would appreciate some tips on geting data from a form into Main() or into a class's data members. Thanks, Lucky

  Hi, my goal is to save state of running process and later start from this point. This is not necessary need to be state from this exact moment, let's say save after 5 seconds is good too. Problem is, i can't alter in code of this external program, i am even don't aware of it's architecture. • Is there a file diff tool that allows for exceptions?

  We currently use Beyond Compare 3.0 and I am quite pleased with it. However, it would be great if I could easily specify an exclusion for a specific one-time case. This is needed when I am doing a code review of some refactoring. For instance: Old code doSomething(ConstantsInterface.FOOBAR); New code: doSomething(BetterEnumeration.FOOBAR); In this case, I have hundreds of changes that I am reviewing that are essentially all the same exact change and I just want to see the exceptions. It would be great if I could easily specify an exception that indicates these two cases are equal. I know of a way to do it in the grammar, but it is tedious and cumbersome in the case where there are ten or so exceptions. Any other tips?

I'm wondering how far back I should go back and where I should start as far as becoming familiar with coding before the iPhone SDK course on Lynda.com isn't something that makes my eyes glaze over. My experience: I taught myself html from the html for dummies book maybe 10 years ago, I've taken a dreamweaver class and built a few sites with it, and I've customized a self hosted Wordpress blog by playing with the php code. And I want to do several checks to see if an attribute is true and if it is, write an additional line in the mail. How can I do this?   Hello, I'm working on the app that uses CoreData. There is location entity that holds latitude and longitude values. I'd like to fetch those entities sorted by distance to the user's location. I tried to set sort descriptor to distance formula sqrt ((x1 - x2)^2 + (y1 - y2)^2) but it fails with exception "... keypath ... not found in entity". • Expanding videoplayer like CNN-website, prerably jQuery-based

  I'm wondering if anyone knows of a script/plugin, jquery-based or otherwise, which could be used to achive the effect that can be found on CNN.com. I'm talking about the videos that are representet by a small thumbnail, that when clicked expands in to the text and plays. I'm by no means a JS-guru, and me and flash isn't the bestest of friends, but I'm not completly cluess. • Equivalent for Java's System.getProperty("java.io.tmpdir") in C ?

  As the title says, the java.io.tmpdir property in Java is really nice, and I can't find an equivalent for C. I'm writing for Windows and in Visual Studio. I don't want to just use something like C:\Temp because in later versions of windows the appropriate directory could be something like C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Local\Temp and a way to retrieve this would be much easier. I want a directory and not just a temp file because I'm downloading and executing a file from the internet. As a side note, if anyone can give me tips about how to better google for C stuff it would be much appreciated :)

  Hi - I've gotten a checkbox header renderer to work well with flat DPs, but a hierarchical collection view is another story. On click, I want it to select all checkboxes in a given column. • SSRS and cached reports

  Hi, I'm opening an SSRS2008 report using the http://server/reportserver/... syntax, outputting directly a PDF copy. This report has several parameters. The problem is that, despite making changes to the report, and clearing the browser's temporary files cache.. if I request the same report (i.e. same parameters) - the old report is returned. In the report execution properties, I have "Always run this report with the most recent data" and "Do not cache temporary copies of this report" selected. It's not just a case of caching data, but the entire report (including formatting, e.g. I deleted a page from the report yet it was still being shown...) and as I haven't specifically chosen to perform any caching I'm a little concerned and clearly don't fully understand what's going on! Any tips?

The users are subdivided into 3 groups with different privilege: admins,analysts and standards users. For every user should be stored into the database the following information: name,lastname,e-mail,age,password. • Ruby - Is there a way to overwrite the __FILE__ variable?

  I'm doing some unit testing, and some of the code is checking to see if files exist based on the relative path of the currently-executing script by using the FILE variable. I'm doing something like this: if File.directory?(File.join(File.dirname(__FILE__),'..','..','directory')) blah blah blah ... else raise "Can't find directory" end I'm trying to find a way to make it fail in the unit tests without doing anything drastic. Being able to overwrite the __ FILE __ variable would be easiest, but as far as I can tell, it's impossible. Any tips?

• Using UIImageViews for 'pages' in an iPhone/iPad storybook app?

  I'm new to iPhone programming, and well, what seems obvious to me may seem silly to a seasoned coder. I did a few 'switching views' tutorials on Youtube, and basically, they seems to work nicely for adding pages to a storybook type app. You add a UIViewController and associated view for each page. My question is would this become insanely slow, or a memory hog if I continued this method for say....35+ pages? Each page would also have a sound file associated with it that would play narration when a page load and stops when we leave. Basically, think of a powerpoint type app, with sound, possibly animated image elements, next & back buttons. I'm probably thinking of this very simplistically, but that's where my experience is at for the moment. Any insight or tips as to better and or more efficient ways to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

If I specify $sc-setTrack(array('just bought from')); This will correctly pull only tweets that have all 3 keywords - but doesn't maintain the order. 1) I want the keywords to appear in the same order like "I just bought apple from itunes" but the above also returns tweets like "I bought some apples and just removed them from the bag" 2) Is there a way to specify the exact words say "NBA basketball" with nothing in between - in the sense I dont want tweets like this to be returned Watching basketball on NBA tv I just want tweets which contain the exact phrase to be returned like I love watching NBA basketball 3) Also is there a way to specify negative keywords Any tips if this is possible. I can't figure out how to fill in a login form from the client.
