• How to list manually installed software packages in Ubuntu?

  Hello, I'm using apt-get install to install various software on my PC. I have a handful of PCs that needs the same software packages installed all over them. How can I get list of software installed via apt-get install and the sequence in what the packages are installed. Okay, the sequence is not so important since the package manager resolves dependencies... I want to create a script that once run installs all needed software on the other PCs. All of these PCs are Ubuntu default installations. It is obvious that the packages list must not include all the packages that are installed trough a default installation :) Also that list should not contain software installed via synaptic or dpkg if possible.

• How to disable visual effects and compiz 100%

  UPDATE 1: The problem is not a monitor refresh rate flickering problem, as then the whole screen would be flickering. For me, only the application windows flicker in and out of view, then most of the time, when there do decide to show themselves, they only partly show themselves, like just top half, bottom half, left half, corner missing, window disappears when you try moving it or mouse over it even etc etc. I know it is a visual effect problem as I know my computer cannot handle visual effects and for some reason when the windows do appear partly, I can see the shadows behind the windows. Those shadows are part of the visual effects which are turned on by default for some reason. I get the same problem with 10.04, but can quickly turn off the visual effects by right clicking the desktop, selecting change background image, and in the visual effects tab, I can click on none, which stops all the visual problems. ORIGINAL QUESTION: I am having problems with 11.04 on my computer. For some reason it is enabling visual effects by default in the live cd when it should not be as my computer cannot support such effects. My computer cannot support Unity either, but it defaults to standard gnome with visual effects for some reason. It should be defaulting to standard gnome with no visual effects. THerefore, all I get is a very flickery live cd which makes it very difficult to see anything. So my question is, how do I disable the visual effects from the live cd? To put it simply, the live cd flickering is so bad, that I had to log back into my standard 10.04 install just to write this question, as I just couldn't see enough of the screen because of the flickering in 11.04 to even get to askubuntu.com...

  Since most operating systems I've heard of besides Windows seem to derive their heritage from Unix, I've been curious whether any OS's with the following characteristics exist: Not generally considered Unix-like, i.e. wasn't designed with Unix compatibility as a primary goal, doesn't use X11 as its default GUI in the most common distributions, doesn't support Unix commands by default, etc. Not in the Windows NT family. Is a modern production operating system, not a purely legacy operating system, a research/hobby project or an OS that's still in an alpha state. Is targeted at commodity x86/x64 PC hardware.

• Windows 2003 and 2008 AD integrated DNS zones

  We have a Windows 2003 server DC1 which is our primary DC holding all FSMO roles. It also is a DNS server for our domain domain.local which is an active directory integrated zone. We also have a Windows 2008 DC name DC2 All servers have the correct DNS entries etc. However on all dns servers there are event id 4515 indicating there are duplicate zones in separate directory partitions and only one will be used until the other is removed. And I see these, there is a zone for domain.local under the default naming partition CN=System, CN=MicrosoftDNS, DC=domain.local. As well as the DomainDNSZones partition DC=DomainDNSZones, DC=DOMAIN, DC=local, CN=MicrosoftDNS It seems that the partition in the Default Naming partition is the one which is being used currently. • Eclipse: open file in external editor only temporarily

  Using Eclipse, I can open a Java source file with an external editor by right-clicking on the file name (in the Package Explorer) and selecting Open With ... - emacsclient. I'm very glad to be able to do that. However, I only want to do that sometimes, not every time. Now, when I double-click on that same file name, I always automatically get the file opened in emacsclient. This is particularly annoying when I use the Open Type dialog to find a file, because in that case it's not possible to right-click and choose the default Eclipse editor. Is there a way to make Eclipse forget that I previously opened a particular file with emacsclient, so that it can go back to the default behavior of using the regular Eclipse editor?

  Recently I was getting error when I am calling web service using Java script. I searching on net and debugging I have found following things. Any web service support three kinds of protocol HttpGet,HttpPost and SOAP. In framework 1.0 it was enabled by default but after 1.0 framework it will not be enabled by default due to security issues and WS-Specifications. • KDE doesn't start up anything else

  I just installed KDE under Arch Linux. Problem is, nothing is starting up right with it - no window manager, no panels, nothing. All I get is a small terminal window in the bottom right corner of the screen, which I'm assuming is konsole. From that single window I can do things like start kwin or launch programs whose names I happen to know (like chromium or firefox), but I don't have a panel for starting programs or switching between programs. It doesn't matter whether I start kdm through inittab or manually by typing # /etc/rc.d/kdm start. KDM looks great, but once I log in as my normal user I just get a console window with no decoration. Is there a startup script for KDE somewhere that needs to run, and usually has a bunch of programs by default - like a window manager, panels, widgets, and all the normal background programs that run in an ordinary GUI? If so, how can I "restore" the default behavior?

• Windows 8 - Ubuntu dual boot

  I bought a new Toshiba s855 notebook with windows 8 preinstalled. Secure boot feature was enabled by default. I installed latest version of ubuntu after disabling secure boot feature(it was not possible to install ubuntu without disabling secure boot). But now when I enable secure boot, the system automatically boots into windows 8, and it boots into ubuntu when I disable secure boot. EasyBCD lists the following boot entries but I can only see Windows 8 in boot menu: Default: Windows 8 Timeout: 7 seconds EasyBCD Boot Device: C:\ Entry #1 Name: Ubuntu BCD ID: {971641cd-304a-11e2-be82-806e6f6e6963} Device: \Device\HarddiskVolume2 Bootloader Path: \EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi ... • Programs still opening websites through Google Chrome, despite its removal

  Even after I've uninstalled Google Chrome, when other programs want to open a website (e.g.: Yahoo! Messenger getting a profile) they will still attempt to do so through Chrome, and fail looking for it. I've read all the advice on how to make Firefox or IE for Windows 7 the default browser. I don't think Google would do this sort of "hijack the default browser" thing and I'm convinced it must be a trojan or virus or even a registry hack. If so, any ideas on how I would go about fixing this without purchasing every virus/trojan program until it was removed? That method could be an expensive fix.

• De-index URL paremeters

  Upon reading over this question is lengthy so allow me to provide a one sentence summary: I need to get Google to de-index URLs that have certain parameters appended I have a website example.com with language translations. There used to be many translations but I deleted them all so that only English (Default) and French options remain. When one selects a language option a parameter is aded to the URL. For example, the home page: https://example.com (default) https://example.com/main?l=fr_FR (French) I added a robots.txt to stop Google from crawling any of the language translations: # robots.txt generated at http://www.mcanerin.com User-agent: * Disallow: Disallow: /cgi-bin/ Disallow: /*?l= So any pages containing "?l=" should not be crawled. I checked in GWT using the robots testing tool. It works. But under html improvements the previously crawled language translation URLs remain indexed. The internet says to add a 404 to the header of the removed URLs so the Googles knows to de-index it. I checked to see what my CMS would throw up if I visited one of the URLs that should no longer exist. This URL was listed in GWT under duplicate title tags (One of the reasons I want to scrub up my URLS) https://example.com/reports/view/884?l=vi_VN&l=hy_AM This URL should not exist - I removed the language translations. The page loads when it should not! I played around. I typed example.com?whatever123 It seems that parameters always load as long as everything before the question mark is a real URL. So if Google has indexed all these URLS with parameters how do I remove them? I cannot check if a 404 is being generated because the page always loads because it's a parameter that needs to be de-indexed.

  I am new to JME3 game engine but I know Android XML GUI layouts pretty good. I have a simple layout here and I cant figure out what is wrong. • nginx can't see MySQL

  I have a fully working Joomla 2.5.6 install driven by a local MySQL server, but I'd like to test nginx to see if it's a faster web serving experience than Apache. \ PHP 5.4.6 (PHP54w) \ CentOS 6.2 \ Joomla 2.5.6 \ PHP54w-fpm.i386 (FastCGI process manager) \ php -m shows: mysql & mysqli modules loaded Nginx seems to have installed fine via yum, it can process a PHP-info file via FastCGI perfectly OK (http://37.128.190.241/php.php) but when I stop Apache, start nginx instead and visit my site I get: "Database connection error (1): The MySQL adapter 'mysqli' is not available." I've tried adjusting my Joomla configuration.php to use mysql instead of mysqli but I get the same basic error, only this time "Database connection error (1): The MySQL adapter 'mysql' is not available" of course! Can anyone think what the problem might be please? I did try explicitly setting extension = mysqli.so and extension = mysql.so in my php.ini to try and force the issue (despite php -m showing they were both successfully loaded anyway) - no difference. • Static IP Address on Ubuntu 12.04 Virtual Machine

  I've setup a VM running Ubuntu 12.04 specifically for local web development and am having some problems ensuring it has a static IP address. A static IP address is important as I'm using the IP address in my hosts file to assign a .local suffix to addresses used both in browser and to connect to the correct database on the VM. Currently, every time I connect to a new network or my VM is assigned a new IP address I need to reconfigure my whole environment which is becoming quite a pain. It also probably doesn't help that the default-lease-time on the Ubuntu VM is set to 1800 by default. At the moment I'm using VMWare Fusion and the Network Adapter is enabled and set to "Autodetect" under Bridged Networking. I've tried to set a static IP address within the dhcpd.conf using the code below: host ubuntu { hardware ethernet 00:50:56:35:0f:f1; fixed-address: 192.168.100.100; } The fixed-address that I've used is also outside the range specified in the subnet block (which in this case is 192.168.100.128 to 192.168.100.254). I've tried adding and removing the network adapter and restarting my Mac after each time to no avail. • IPv6 tunnels - any easy way to turn them on and off?

  I've set up a tunnelbroker.net (Hurricane Electric) IPv6 tunnel from my laptop running 12.04. Works fine, and allows me to test the dual-stack configuration on my remote webservers etc. until native IPv6 is available on my ISP. However, there are times when I don't want the tunnel. For example if I'm accessing something that requires an IPv4 address in my own country rather than the Tunnelbroker tunnel endpoint, or if I'm away from the local IPv4 tunnel endpoint, or if I simply want to test without IPv6. Is there a simple way to disable and then re-enable the IPv6 tunnel, without rebooting? For context, here's what's in my /etc/network/interfaces (NNN replaces numbers): auto he-ipv6 iface he-ipv6 inet6 v4tunnel endpoint 216.218.NNN.NNN address 2001:470:NNN:NNN::2 netmask 64 up ip -6 route add default dev he-ipv6 down ip -6 route del default dev he-ipv6 Is there a network manager application (gui or command line) to selectively enable/disable parts of /etc/network/interfaces, or IPv6 in general? I found even by commenting out that out (and reloading networking) it's tough to get the IPv6 to go away. A "tunnel on/off" button in networking would be great, like using a VPN.

• How to set up memcached to use unix socket?

  While I could use memcached on Debian to use the default 11211 port, but I've had great difficulty setting up unix socket, Form what I'v read, I know that I need to create a memcache.socket and add -s /path/to/memcache.socket -a 0766 To /etc/memcached.conf and comment out the default connection port and IP, i.e. -p 11211 -l 127.0.0.1 However, when I restart memcached I get internal server errors on Drupal site. I'm trying to implement unix sockets to avoid TCP/IP overhead and boost overal memcached performance, however not sure how much performance gain one can expect of this tweak. I appreciate your hints or possibly configs to to resolve this.

• Robocopy hiding folders on backup drives

  I have a backup batch file that uses Robocopy to backup my files: robocopy "C:\" "G:\Default\RoboCopyBackup\C" /XF Pagefile.sys /XD "System Volume Information" "Recycler" "Temporary Internet Files" "Installer Cache" "Temp" /E /R:1 /W:0 /TEE /XJ This should create a folder structure on the external backup drive like so: G:\Default\RoboCopyBackup\C\... However, G: appears totally empty. What is weird, is that the folders and files are there! If I type the above path into the address bar, I see all the files and folders! Can anyone help me work out why? I think it might be some NTFS-based ownership/permissions thing but I'm not sure.

• Augmenting functionality of subclasses without code duplication in C++

  I have to add common functionality to some classes that share the same superclass, preferably without bloating the superclass. The simplified inheritance chain looks like this: Element -> HTMLElement -> HTMLAnchorElement Element -> SVGElement -> SVGAlement The default doSomething() method on Element is no-op by default, but there are some subclasses that need an actual implementation that requires some extra overridden methods and instance members. I cannot put a full implementation of doSomething() in Element because 1) it is only relevant for some of the subclasses, 2) its implementation has a performance impact and 3) it depends on a method that could be overridden by a class in the inheritance chain between the superclass and a subclass, e.g. SVGElement in my example. • Access - Force Form Refresh on New Record

  Let me set the stage here a bit: I have an Access project with various buttons, triggers, macros, etc. I needed an Appointment Date field to only show when the button APPOINTMENT MADE is toggled ON. This works great. The problem arises when you submit a form with the APPOINTMENT MADE toggled. Once the record is inserted, the Access file clears all fields, but leaves the Appointment Date enabled, when it should be disabled by default. I have tried the Current, Load, Before Insert, After Insert and many other options on the FORM properties. Am I missing a simple way to force a refresh so the field goes back to it's default DISABLED? Thanks in advance!

• Directory error when trying to create a new user

  I added a second user 'shirley' in Settings - User Accounts, and set a password. The account type is Standard. In 11.04, this worked and I logged in and had a functioning desktop for this user. How is this done in 11.10? When I try to log in as this user I have this error: Nautilus could not create the required folder "/home/shirley/.config/nautilus". Before running Nautilus, please create the following folder, or set permissions such that Nautilus can create it. The only option then is to click OK, this dumps me out to full-screen Nautilus, like this: There is no launcher or visible way to start any programs. Print screen doesn't take a screengrab. The desktop is similar to this question but I get no terminal when I press CTRL+ALT+T. I have to press CTRL+ALT+F2 and restart from the terminal to get out of this. This answer is to install gnome-system-tools. Shouldn't I be able to add a second user with the default install? EDIT: I tried the deluser+adduser suggestion, there was no change after trying it. Here is what I got: tom@desktop:~$ sudo deluser shirley [sudo] password for tom: Removing user `shirley' ... Warning: group `shirley' has no more members. Done tom@desktop:~$ sudo adduser shirley Adding user `shirley' ... • pinx 501 with print server - 10 licenses

  I have pix 501 with only 10 licenses. I'm already approaching this limit, running 2 computers at home, 2 laptops, PS3, iphones, 2 web cams..not everthing is on all the time, but it's possible as I'm looking into adding a print server, so that I can print from anywhere in the house. So my question is, will the print server count as a connection towards the license? I think it will need default gateway, which in this case will be my pix 501. I've seen somewhere on some othee board saying, don't set default gateway in the print server to pix 501, but then how would that work? is there a work around? I don't need to print from VPN or from outside, just inside..

• How to set the IP address in a customized OpenWRT compilation

  I have been struggling today customizing OpenWRT. I checkout the stable using SVN, "make menuconfig" to customize the image, "make" it and run it on a router. Almost all my modifications work, except for the (Seemingly trivial) task of changing the default 192.168.1.1 address. I tried numerous files (scripts as well as config files) but I can't seem to change it (I can change it for a brief moment after boot using the "preinit" file, but after a few seconds it reverts to default). I suspect I should be setting it in the /etc/network file, but modifications there seem to be overwritten during boot. Maybe it has something to do with the br-lan interface? Does anybody have some thoughts on the subject? Thanks!
