• Oracle Hosts Successful PeopleSoft Customer Advisory Board Meetings

- by Mark.Hoernemann
Last week, Oracle hosted the annual Customer Advisory Board meetings for various PeopleSoft applications, including the PeopleTools CAB. The three day event at the Oracle headquarters brought together over 90 customers, with over 170 representatives taking part. This was the largest CAB event PeopleSoft has had to date. The focus of the event was to share our vision for PeopleSoft, and gain valuable input from our customer base on our direction and focus areas. The customer feedback we received for the event was extremely positive, matching the sentiment on our side. The information our CAB members provided was excellent; it will help ensure that we focus on the areas that matter most to our customers. I’d like to thank all the customers that took the time out of their schedules to hear where we’re looking to go in the future, and provide guidance on how we can best assist our customer base on remaining successful in the marketplace.

• Is realtime validation of username good or bad?

- by iamserious
I have a simple form for the user to sign up to my site; with email, username and password fields. We are now trying to implement an ajax validation so the user doesn't have to post the form to find out if the username is already taken. I can do this either on keyup event or on text blur event. My question is, which of these is really the best way to do? Keyup From the user POV, it would be good if the validation is done as and when they are typing, (on key up event) - of course, I am waiting for half a second to see if the user stops typing before firing off the request, and user can make any adjustments immediately. But this means I am sending way more requests than if I validated the username on Blur event. Blur The number of requests will be much lower when the validation is done on blur event, But this means the user has to actually go away from the textbox, look at the validation result, and if necessary go back to it to make any changes and repeat the whole process until he gets it right. I had a quick look at google, tumblr, twitter and no one actually does username validations on keyup events, (heck, tubmlr waits for the form to be posted) but I can swear I have seen keyup validations in a lot of places too. So, coming back to the question, will keyup validations be too many for server, is it an unnecessary overhead? or is it worth taking these hits to give user a better experience? ps: all my regex validations etc are already done on javascript and only when it passes all these other criteria does it send a request to server to check if a username already exists. (And the server is doing a select count(1) from user where username = '' - nothing substantial, but still enough to occupy some resource) pps: I'm on asp.net, MS SQL stack., if that matters.

• PASS Summit Location follow up - result analysis

- by simonsabin
I've had a chance to look at the results directly and it is clear that there is a tough choice. On the one hand people are saying that they prefer to have PASS put their money into chapters and things like 24hrs of PASS rather than an event on the east coast. Whilst at the same time almost 50% more people said they would be more likely to attend an East Coast event than a Seattle event, and 60% more said they would be more likley to attend a US Central region event. Whats more 60% said that the summit should be outside of Seattle every other year with only 19% saying it should always stay in Seattle. So clearly there is a huge desire for a non Seattle event. Looking at the other reasons for keeping in Seattle and the big one being that people want Microsoft speakers. More people think its somewhat important of very important that the conference is in walking distance of the hotels and restaurants. Essentially the Q6 questions show an even balance for normal conference, highlighting that they are prepared to travel, not with the family and they want a well laid out conference. Whats very annoying is that the questions, as people have commented, were biased towards certain answers. For instance there was no option about whether people feel its important to have industry leading speakers, MVPs etc at the conference. Only questions about Microsoft speakers. I know survey writing is very difficult to avoid biasing the answers one way or another. There was also no choice to show peoples preference, would people prefer Microsoft speakers or the summit to be held on the East Coast/Central US. I also find it amazing that people prefer hundres of developers rather than the SQLCAT and CSS teams, surely that indicates another issue about a lack of understanding of what the these teams do. All in all it is clear that people showed they want an event outside of Seattle and don't want PASS to be putting money into that instead of into other community activites. I find it suprising that there appears to have been a huge weighting against certain questions which have prioritised them over the huge desire for a PASS summit outside of Seattle. Lets see where we will be in 2013 or maybe they will rethink 2012 who knows.

• SharePoint Saturday Huntsville in need of Speakers and Sponsors…

- by MOSSLover
So I’ve been to events with Cathy, Lori, and Laura. They are good people. Honestly, the best event I ever attended was SharePoint Saturday Ozarks. I had a crappy week and I got there the actual day of the event. Hanging out with the three of them plus Joy made everything so much better. Then there was devLink and SharePoint Saturday DC and a few other events sprinkled into the mix. I was going to attend Birmingham but the timing was bad and other things occurred. Now I have the opportunity to attend Huntsville. I know some of you are thinking Alabama what’s to offer there? You won’t know until you go to the event. Come on guys you know you want to speak or sponsor there event so go here: http://www.sharepointsaturday.org/huntsville. • django/python: is one view that handles two sibling models a good idea?

- by clime
I am using django multi-table inheritance: Video and Image are models derived from Media. I have implemented two views: video_list and image_list, which are just proxies to media_list. media_list returns images or videos (based on input parameter model) for a certain object, which can be of type Event, Member, or Crag. The view alters its behaviour based on input parameter action (better name would be mode), which can be of value "edit" or "view". The problem is that I need to ask whether the input parameter model contains Video or Image in media_list so that I can do the right thing. Similar condition is also in helper method media_edit_list that is called from the view. I don't particularly like it but the only alternative I can think of is to have separate (but almost the same) logic for video_list and image_list and then probably also separate helper methods for videos and images: video_edit_list, image_edit_list, video_view_list, image_view_list. So four functions instead of just two. That I like even less because the video functions would be very similar to the respective image functions. What do you recommend? Here is extract of relevant parts: http://pastebin.com/07t4bdza. I'll also paste the code here: #urls url(r'^media/images/(?P<rel_model_tag>(event|member|crag))/(?P<rel_object_id>\d+)/(?P<action>(view|edit))/$', views.image_list, name='image-list') url(r'^media/videos/(?P<rel_model_tag>(event|member|crag))/(?P<rel_object_id>\d+)/(?P<action>(view|edit))/$', views.video_list, name='video-list') #views def image_list(request, rel_model_tag, rel_object_id, mode): return media_list(request, Image, rel_model_tag, rel_object_id, mode) def video_list(request, rel_model_tag, rel_object_id, mode): return media_list(request, Video, rel_model_tag, rel_object_id, mode) def media_list(request, model, rel_model_tag, rel_object_id, mode): rel_model = tag_to_model(rel_model_tag) rel_object = get_object_or_404(rel_model, pk=rel_object_id) if model == Image: star_media = rel_object.star_image else: star_media = rel_object.star_video filter_params = {} if rel_model == Event: filter_params['event'] = rel_object_id elif rel_model == Member: filter_params['members'] = rel_object_id elif rel_model == Crag: filter_params['crag'] = rel_object_id media_list = model.objects.filter(~Q(id=star_media.id)).filter(**filter_params).order_by('date_added').all() context = { 'media_list': media_list, 'star_media': star_media, } if mode == 'edit': return media_edit_list(request, model, rel_model_tag, rel_object_id, context) return media_view_list(request, model, rel_model_tag, rel_object_id, context) def media_view_list(request, model, rel_model_tag, rel_object_id, context): if request.is_ajax(): context['base_template'] = 'boxes/base-lite.html' return render(request, 'media/list-items.html', context) def media_edit_list(request, model, rel_model_tag, rel_object_id, context): if model == Image: get_media_edit_record = get_image_edit_record else: get_media_edit_record = get_video_edit_record media_list = [get_media_edit_record(media, rel_model_tag, rel_object_id) for media in context['media_list']] if context['star_media']: star_media = get_media_edit_record(context['star_media'], rel_model_tag, rel_object_id) else: star_media = None json = simplejson.dumps({ 'star_media': star_media, 'media_list': media_list, }) return HttpResponse(json, content_type=json_response_mimetype(request)) def get_image_edit_record(image, rel_model_tag, rel_object_id): record = { 'url': image.image.url, 'name': image.title or image.filename, 'type': mimetypes.guess_type(image.image.path)[0] or 'image/png', 'thumbnailUrl': image.thumbnail_2.url, 'size': image.image.size, 'id': image.id, 'media_id': image.media_ptr.id, 'starUrl':reverse('image-star', kwargs={'image_id': image.id, 'rel_model_tag': rel_model_tag, 'rel_object_id': rel_object_id}), } return record def get_video_edit_record(video, rel_model_tag, rel_object_id): record = { 'url': video.embed_url, 'name': video.title or video.url, 'type': None, 'thumbnailUrl': video.thumbnail_2.url, 'size': None, 'id': video.id, 'media_id': video.media_ptr.id, 'starUrl': reverse('video-star', kwargs={'video_id': video.id, 'rel_model_tag': rel_model_tag, 'rel_object_id': rel_object_id}), } return record # • List item stuck in "Pending"

- by Norgean
Problem simplified: On approval, you have an event receiver that changes a field according to some weird and wonderful business logic. But the item remains in "Pending" state. Why? First, you obviously need to turn off the event handling when you change things in the event receiver. If not, the event receiver will be called because the item changed. Infinite recursion is a bad thing. But you guessed that. But that's not what was wrong. The culprit in my case was that items are set to require a new approval whenever the item is changed. This is good, but not what we want in this particular case. So force it back to approved after the other column has been changed.

• windows print service

- by user1631171
Hi my college has a HP color printer that can be used to print both A3 and A4 size color printouts. It is connected to a windows 2008 print server. The windows event viewer provides the status of printouts using event id 307. I would like to know if it is possible to find out if an A3 page was printed or A4 page was printed. Is this information also logged in windows event viewer. Or is there any other event id that captures this information. Also the number of copies printed should be captured in event id 805. I have read in some forums that sometimes the value is wrong. Please provide me some information on this. Thanks in advance.

• How do I keep user input and rendering independent of the implementation environment?

- by alex
I'm writing a Tetris clone in JavaScript. I have a fair amount of experience in programming in general, but am rather new to game development. I want to separate the core game code from the code that would tie it to one environment, such as the browser. My quick thoughts led me to having the rendering and input functions external to my main game object. I could pass the current game state to the rendering method, which could render using canvas, elements, text, etc. I could also map input to certain game input events, such as move piece left, rotate piece clockwise, etc. I am having trouble designing how this should be implemented in my object. Should I pass references to functions that the main object will use to render and process user input? For example... var TetrisClone = function(renderer, inputUpdate) { this.renderer = renderer || function() {}; this.inputUpdate = input || function() {}; this.state = {}; }; TetrisClone.prototype = { update: function() { // Get user input via function passed to constructor. var inputEvents = this.inputUpdate(); // Update game state. // Render the current game state via function passed to constructor. this.renderer(this.state); } }; var renderer = function(state) { // Render blocks to browser page. } var inputEvents = {}; var charCodesToEvents = { 37: "move-piece-left" /* ... */ }; document.addEventListener("keypress", function(event) { inputEvents[event.which] = true; }); var inputUpdate = function() { var translatedEvents = [], event, translatedEvent; for (event in inputEvents) { if (inputEvents.hasOwnProperty(event)) { translatedEvent = charCodesToEvents[event]; translatedEvents.push(translatedEvent); } } inputEvents = {}; return translatedEvents; } var game = new TetrisClone(renderer, inputUpdate); Is this a good game design? How would you modify this to suit best practice in regard to making a game as platform/input independent as possible?

• Split or individually edit repeating Google Calendar events

- by Steve Crane
Our company just moved from Microsoft Exchange with Outlook to Google Mail, Calendar, etc. and I am trying to modify a calendar event where it repeats, but the times across the days are not the same. I created an event from 10h00 to 16h30 and made it repeat for two days. Now the times need to be adjusted independently for the two days. I could just cancel the repeat and book a new appointment for the second day but the event has a confirmed room booking and with rooms at a premium I worry that someone else may grab the room before I can create the new second day event. Outlook had a way to modify repeating events individually but I'm not seeing anything like that in the Google Calendar web client. So my question is whether there is a way to individually edit repeating events, or failing that, to split the repeating event into individual ones?

Hi, I am new to using JFreeChart and I'm sure there is a simple solution to my problem . . PROBLEM: I have a chart that shows multiple "events types" along the date X axis. The Y axis shows the "event category". My problem is that only the latest date of an event type is shown for each category. In the example below The chart shows data points for Event Type 1 at June 20th(Category 1) and at June 10th (Category 2). I had also added a data point for June 10th, Category 1 but the June 20th point erases it. I think I am misunderstanding how the CategoryPlot is working. Am I using the wrong type of chart? I thought a scatter chart would be the ticket but it only accepts numerical values. I need to have discrete string categories on my Y-axis. If anyone can point me in the right direction, you would really make my day. Thanks for reading! -Christine (The code below works as-is. It is as simple as I could make it) import java.awt.Dimension; import javax.swing.JPanel; import org.jfree.chart.ChartPanel; import org.jfree.chart.JFreeChart; import org.jfree.chart.axis.CategoryAxis; import org.jfree.chart.axis.DateAxis; import org.jfree.chart.plot.CategoryPlot; import org.jfree.chart.plot.PlotOrientation; import org.jfree.chart.renderer.category.LineAndShapeRenderer; import org.jfree.data.category.CategoryDataset; import org.jfree.data.category.DefaultCategoryDataset; import org.jfree.data.time.Day; import org.jfree.ui.ApplicationFrame; import org.jfree.ui.RefineryUtilities; public class EventFrequencyDemo1 extends ApplicationFrame { public EventFrequencyDemo1(String s) { super(s); CategoryDataset categorydataset = createDataset(); JFreeChart jfreechart = createChart(categorydataset); ChartPanel chartpanel = new ChartPanel(jfreechart); chartpanel.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(500, 270)); setContentPane(chartpanel); } private static JFreeChart createChart(CategoryDataset categorydataset) { CategoryPlot categoryplot = new CategoryPlot(categorydataset, new CategoryAxis("Category"), new DateAxis("Date"), new LineAndShapeRenderer(false, true)); categoryplot.setOrientation(PlotOrientation.HORIZONTAL); categoryplot.setDomainGridlinesVisible(true); return new JFreeChart(categoryplot); } private static CategoryDataset createDataset() { DefaultCategoryDataset defaultcategorydataset = new DefaultCategoryDataset(); Day june10 = new Day(10, 6, 2002); Day june20 = new Day(20, 6, 2002); // This event is overwritten by June20th defaultcategorydataset.setValue(new Long(june10.getMiddleMillisecond()), "Event Type 1", "Category 1"); defaultcategorydataset.setValue(new Long(june10.getMiddleMillisecond()), "Event Type 1", "Category 2"); // Overwrites the previous June10th event defaultcategorydataset.setValue(new Long(june20.getMiddleMillisecond()), "Event Type 1", "Category 1"); defaultcategorydataset.setValue(new Long(june20.getMiddleMillisecond()), "Event Type 2", "Category 2"); return defaultcategorydataset; } public static JPanel createDemoPanel() { JFreeChart jfreechart = createChart(createDataset()); return new ChartPanel(jfreechart); } public static void main(String args[]) { EventFrequencyDemo1 eventfrequencydemo1 = new EventFrequencyDemo1("Event Frequency Demo"); eventfrequencydemo1.pack(); RefineryUtilities.centerFrameOnScreen(eventfrequencydemo1); eventfrequencydemo1.setVisible(true); } }

• swf listens to XML, AS3

- by VideoDnd
My swf listens to XML from a socket and document. How do I get 'my variables' to grab XML from the socket instead of the XML document? PURPOSE My purpose is to control variables with a XML Socket Server. I hope my question is clear, but ask if there's any questions. EXAMPLE Flash File import flash.net.*; import flash.display.*; import flash.events.*; import flash.system.Security; import flash.utils.Timer; import flash.events.TimerEvent; //MY VARIABLES, LINE 8-12 var timer:Timer = new Timer(10); var myString:String = ""; var count:int = 0; var myStg:String = ""; var fcount:int = 0; var xml_s=new XMLSocket(); xml_s.addEventListener(Event.CONNECT, socket_event_catcher);//OnConnect// xml_s.addEventListener(Event.CLOSE, socket_event_catcher);//OnDisconnect// xml_s.addEventListener(IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, socket_event_catcher);//Unable To Connect// xml_s.addEventListener(DataEvent.DATA, socket_event_catcher);//OnDisconnect// xml_s.connect("localhost", 1999); function socket_event_catcher(Event):void { switch (Event.type) { case 'ioError' : trace("ioError: " + Event.text);//Unable to Connect :(// break; case 'connect' : trace("Connection Established!");//Connected :)// break; case 'data' : trace("Received Data: " + Event.data); //var myXML:XML=new XML(Event.data); //trace("myXML.body.file: " + myXML.body.file); //var myLoader:String=myXML.body.file; //var urlReq:URLRequest=new URLRequest(myLoader); //trace("file to load URL: " + urlReq); break; case 'close' : trace("Connection Closed!");//OnDisconnect :( // xml_s.close(); break; } } //LOAD XML var myXML:XML; var myLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader(); myLoader.load(new URLRequest("time.xml")); myLoader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, processXML); //var myXML:XML=new XML(Event.data); //trace("myXML.body.file: " + myXML.body.file); //var DOINK:String=myXML.body.file; //var urlReq:URLRequest=new URLRequest(DOINK); //trace("file to load URL: " + urlReq); //PARSE XML function processXML(e:Event):void { myXML = new XML(e.target.data); trace(myXML.COUNT.text()); //-77777 //grab the data as a string myString = myXML.COUNT.text() //grab the data as an int count = int(myXML.COUNT.text()); //grab the data as a string myString = myXML.COUNT.text() //grab the data as an int count = int(myXML.COUNT.text()); //grab the data as a string myStg = myXML.COUNT.text() //grab the data as an int fcount = int(myXML.COUNT.text()); //grab the data as a string myStg = myXML.COUNT.text() //grab the data as an int fcount = int(myXML.COUNT.text()); trace("String: ", myString); trace("Int: ", count); trace(count - 1); //just to show you that it's a number that you can do math with (-77778) //TEXT var text:TextField = new TextField(); text.text = myString; addChild(text); } Ruby Server 'Snippet' msg1 = {"msg" => {"head" => {"type" => "frctl", "seq_no" => seq_no, "version" => 1.0}, "SESSION" => {"text" => "88888", "timer" => -1000, "count" => 10, "fcount" => "10"}}} XML <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <SESSION> <TIMER TITLE="speed">100</TIMER> <COUNT TITLE="starting position">88888</COUNT> <FCOUNT TITLE="ramp">1000</FCOUNT> </SESSION> ENVIROMENT AS3 Ruby 186-25 PROBLEM Coding errors "coercion of value"
