• SSMS Tools Pack 2.7 is released. New website, improved licensing and features.

  New website Nice, isn't it? Cleaner, simpler, better looking and more modern. If you have any suggestions for further improvements I'd be glad to hear them. Simpler licensing With SSMS tools Pack 2.7 the licensing is finally where it should be. It is now based on the activate/deactivate model. This way you can move a license from machine to machine with simple deactivation on one and reactivation on another machine. Much better, no? Because of very good feedback I have added an option for 6 machines and lowered the 4 machines option to 3 machines. This should make it much simpler for you to choose the right option for yourself. Improved features Version 2.5.3 was already extremely stable and 2.7 continues with that tradition. Because of that I could fully focus on features and why 3.0 will rock even more that 2.7! ;) In version 2.7 I have addressed quite a few improvements you were requesting for a while now. SQL History This is probably the biggest time saver out there, therefore it's only fair it gets a few important updates. If you have an existing .sql file opened, the Window Content History now saves your code to that existing file and also makes a backup in the SQL History log default location. Search is still done through the SQL History log but the Tab Sessions Restore opens your existing .sql file. This way you don't have to remember to save your existing files by yourself anymore. A bug when you couldn't search properly if you copied the log files to a new location was fixed. Unfortunately this removed the option to filter a search with the time component. The smallest search interval is now one day. The SSMS Tools Pack now remembers the visibility of the Current Window History window when you exit SSMS. SQL Snippets You can now set the position of the cursor in your snippets by placing {C} somewhere in your snippet. It's a small improvement but can be a huge time saver since you don't have to move through the snippet to the desired location anymore. Run script on multiple databases Database choices can now be saved with a name and then loaded again next time. You can also choose to run the script in a new window for each chosen database. Search through grid results You can now go previous/next search result with the Prev/Next control inside the search window. This is extremely useful if you have a large resultset. IT saves you the scrolling. CRUD generator Four new variables have been added: |CurrentDate| writes current date in format yyyy-MM-dd to your script |CurrentTime| writes current time in 24h format HH:mm:ss to your script |CurrentWinUser| writes current Windows logged on user to your script |CurrentSqlUser| writes current SQL logged on login to your script This was actually quite a requested feature so if you have any other ideas for extra variables, do let me know. • Making user input/math on data fast, unlike excel type programs

  I'm creating a research platform solely for myself to do some research on data. Programs like excel are terribly slow for me so I'm trying to come up with another solution. Originally I used excel. A1 was the cell that contained the data and all other cells in use calculated something on A1, or on other cells, that all could be in the end traced to A1. A1 was like an element of an array, I then I incremented it to go through all my data. This was way too slow. So the only other option I found originally was to hand code in c# the calculations inside a loop. Then I simply recompiled each time I changed my math. This was terribly slow to do and I had to order everything correctly so things would update correctly (dependencies). I could have also used events, but hand coding events for each cell like calculation would also be very slow. Next I created an application to read Excel and to perfectly imitate it. Which is what I now use. Basically I write formulas onto a fraction of my data to get live results inside excel. Then my program reads excel, writes another c# program, compiles it, and runs that program which runs my excel created formulas through a lot more data a whole lot faster. The advantage being my application dependency sorts everything (or I could use events) so I don't have to (like excel does) And of course the speed. But now its not a single application anymore. Instead its 2 applications, one which only reads my formulas and writes another program. The other one being the result which only lives for a short while before I do other runs through my data with different formulas / settings. So I can't see multiple results at one time without introducing even more programs like a database or at least having the 2 applications talking to each other. My idea was to have a dll that would be written, compiled, loaded, and unloaded again and again. So a self-updating program, sort of. But apparently that's not possible without another appdomain which means data has to be marshaled to be moved between the appdomains. Which would slow things down, not for summaries, but for other stuff I need to do with all my data. I'm also forgetting to mention a huge problem with restarting an application again and again which is having to reload ALL my data into memory again and again. But its still a whole lot faster than excel. I'm really super puzzled as to what people do when they want to research data fast. I'm completely unable to have a program accept user input and having it fast. My understanding is that it would have to do things like excel which is to evaluate strings again and again. So my only option is to repeatedly compile applications. Do I have a correct understanding on computer science? I've only just began programming, and didn't think I would have to learn much to do some simple math on data. My understanding is its either compiling my user defined stuff to a program or evaluating them from a string or something stupid again and again. And my only option is to probably switch operating systems or something to be able to have a program compile and run itself without stopping (writing/compiling dll, loading dll to program, unloading, and repeating). Can someone give me some idea on how computers work? Is anything better possible? Like a running program, that can accept user input and compile it and then unload it later? I mean heck operating systems dont need to be RESTARTED with every change to user input. What is this the cave man days? Sorry, it's just so super frustrating not knowing what one can do, and can't do. If only I could understand and learn this stuff fast enough.

While I'm aware that first-chance exceptions are not a problem in and of themselves, this does cause some problems for me: I often have the debugger set to "break on exceptions", as I'm writing WPF apps, and otherwise all exceptions end up getting converted to a DispatcherUnhandledException, and all the actual information you want is lost. WPF sucks like that. As soon as I hit any code that's using dynamic, the debug output log becomes fairly useless. All the useful trace lines that I care about get hidden amongst all the useless RuntimeBinderExceptions Is there any way I can turn this off, or is the RuntimeBinder unfortunately just built like that? • Missing Edit Option on Silverlight 4 DataForm

  I’m trying out the Silverlight 4 beta DataForm control. I don’t seem to be able to get the edit and paging options at the top of the control like I’ve seen in Silverlight 3 examples. Has something changed or am I doing something wrong? • Google.com and clients1.google.com/generate_204

  I was looking into google.com's Net activity in firebug just because I was curious and noticed a request was returning "204 No Content." It turns out that a 204 No Content "is primarily intended to allow input for actions to take place without causing a change to the user agent's active document view, although any new or updated metainformation SHOULD be applied to the document currently in the user agent's active view." Whatever. I've looked into the JS source code and saw that "generate_204" is requested like this: (new Image).src="http://clients1.google.com/generate_204" No variable declaration/assignment at all. My first idea is that it was being used to track if Javascript is enabled. But the "(new Image).src='...'" call is called from a dynamically loaded external JS file anyway, so that would be pointless. Anyone have any ideas as to what the point could be? UPDATE "/generate_204" appears to be available on many google services/servers (e.g., maps.google.com/generate_204, maps.gstatic.com/generate_204, etc...). You can take advantage of this by pre-fetching the generate_204 pages for each google-owned service your web app may use. • Caching with AVPlayer and AVAssetExportSession

  I would like to cache progressive-download videos using AVPlayer. How can I save an AVPlayer's item to disk? I'm trying to use AVAssetExportSession on the player's currentItem (which is fully loaded). • UIViewController presentModalViewController: animated: doing nothing?

  Hi, I recently started a project, using Apple's Utility Application example project. In the example project, there's an info button that shows an instance of FlipSideView. If you know the Weather.app, you know what the button acts like. I then changed the MainWindow.xib to contain a scrollview in the middle of the window and a page-control view at the bottom of the window (again, like the Weather.app). The scrollview gets filled with instances of MainView. When I then clicked the info button, the FlipSideView would show, but only in the area that was previously filled by the MainView instance – this means that the page-control view on the bottom of the page still showed when the FlipSideView instance got loaded. So, I thought that I would simply add a UIViewController for the top-most window, which is the one declared inside the AppDelegate created along side with the project. So, I created a subclass of UIViewController, put an instance of it inside MainWindow.xib and connected it's view outlet to the UIWindow declared as window inside the app delegate. I also changed the button's action, so that it know sends a message to the MainWindowController instance. The message does get sent (I checked with NSLog() statements), but the FlipSideView doesn't get shown. Here's the relevant (?) code: FlipsideViewController *controller = [[FlipsideViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"FlipsideView" bundle:nil]; controller.delegate = self; controller.modalTransitionStyle = UIModalTransitionStyleFlipHorizontal; [self presentModalViewController:controller animated:YES]; [controller release]; Why's this not working?   I am adding a PagedList to my view and loosely following this Tutorial. Bit open ended huh... sorry, I think it might help if tell you what I'm acutally doing: I have an Action of Edit on a Controller called "Page". When I first see the form to change the Page's details everything loads up fine (binding to a "MyCmsPage" object). Then I click a button that generates a value for one of the MyCmsPage object's fields (MyCmsPage.SeoTitle). It generates fine and updates the object and I then return the action result with the newly modified page object and expect the relevant textbox (rendered using <%= Html.TextBox("seoTitle", page.SeoTitle)%) to be updated ... but alas it displays the value from the old model that was loaded. I've worked around it by using ModelState.Clear() but I need to know why / how it has worked so I'm not just doing it blindly. • new ActiveXObject('Word.Application') creates new winword.exe process when IE security does not allo

  We are using MS Word as a spell checker for a few fields on a private company web site, and when IE security settings are correct it works well. (Zone for the site set to Trusted, and trusted zone modified to allow control to run without prompting.) The script we are using creates a word object and closes it afterward. While the object exists, a winword.exe process runs, but it is destroyed when the word object is closed. If our site is not set in the trusted zone (Internet zone with default security level) the call that creates the word object fails as expected, but the winword.exe process is still created. I do not have any way to interact with this process in the script, so the process stays around until the user logs off (users have no way to manually destroy the process, and it wouldn't be a good solution even if they did.) The call that attempts to create the object is... try { oWordApplication = new ActiveXObject('Word.Application'); } catch(error) { // irrelevant code removed, described in comments.. // notify user spell check cannot be used // disable spell check option } So every time the page is loaded this code may be run again, creating yet another orphan winword.exe process. oWordApplication is, of course, undefined in the catch block. I would like to be able to detect the browser security settings beforehand, but I have done some searching on this and do not think that it is possible. Management here is happy with it as it is. As long as IE security is set correctly it works, and it works well for our purposes. (We may eventually look at other options for spell check functionality, but this was quick, inexpensive, and does everything we need it to do.) This last problem bugs me and I'd like to do something about it, but I'm out of ideas and I have other things that are more in need of my attention. Before I put it aside, I thought I'd ask for suggestions here...

• PDF rendering crashes app Core Graphics

  EDIT: The memory leaks turned out to be unrelated to the crashes. Leaks are fixed but crashes remain, still mysterious. My (iPhone) app does lots of PDF loading and rendering, some of it threaded. Sometime, it seems always after I flush a page cash after getting a memory warning, the app crashes with a bad access when trying to draw a pdf page stored in an NSData object.   Hi, I am using TFS2008 and VS2008. I run nightly builds for about 20 applications using one build agent and the builds are scheduled for either 1am or 2am. Most of the build succeed, however 6 of them fail regularly with similar errors. The errors are either the first two below, or the third one by itself: TF215085: An error occurred while connecting to agent \xxxx\BUILDMACHINE: TF215076: Team Foundation Build on computer BUILDMACHINE (port 9191) is not responding. Technical information (for administrator): The operation has timed out It looks to me like some kind of communication error, maybe the port gets over loaded - can this happen? Should I spread the builds out a bit more? In the build definition it says "Queue the build on the default build agent at", so I figured if I scheduled them to start at the same time they would be queued and occur sequentially. Most of the suggestions I've found online for these errors are for all or nothing scenarios where no builds work at all whereas my problem is most build but some consistently do not. Judging by the dates of the last successful builds of these 6 failing builds I believe it is the same 6 failing every night. (I'm editing the build definitions now to keep the failed builds so I can get some more info on the problem) Any help on this would be much appreciated. James.

I've made sure I included the @require for jQuery and saved my js file before installing it, as required files are only loaded on installation.   Hi Everyone, I want to query the DB through LINQ writing manual SQL, my linq method is: var q = db.TableView.Where(sqlAfterWhere); returnValue = q.Count(); this method queries well if the value passed to variable "sqlAfterWhere" is: (this variable is String type) it.Name = 'xyz' but what if i want to use IN clause, using a sub query. (i need to use 'it' before every column name in the above query to work), i cant use 'it' before the sub query columns as its a separate query, so what should i do, if i dont use any thing, and use column names directly it gives error saying " could not be resolved" where is my column names with out 'it' at the begining. So the query not working is: (this is a string passed to the variable above): it.Name IN (SELECT Name FROM TableName WHERE Address LIKE '%SomeAddress%') the errors come out as: Name could not be resolved Address could not be resolved The exact error is: "'Name' could not be resolved in the current scope or context. Make sure that all referenced variables are in scope, that required schemas are loaded, and that namespaces are referenced correctly., near simple identifier, line 6, column 25." Same error for "Address as well if i use 'it.' before these columns it gives error as: "The element type 'Edm.Int32' and the CollectionType 'Transient.collection[Transient.rowtype(GroupID,Edm.Int32(Nullable=True,DefaultValue=))]' are not compatible. • Managing Dependency Hell with WiX and C#

  We are on the eve of product launch, and at the last minute I am being bombarded with crash reports that appear to be related to our installer, which is a WiX3 project with separate outputs for x86 and x64 builds. These have been an ongoing problem that I always thought were fixed, only to find out that they were still lurking. The product itself is a collection of binaries that communicate with each other via .Net remoting, including a Windows Service and a small COM component that is loaded as an addon in another app. The service runs as SYSTEM, the COM piece runs in a low-rights context, while the other pieces run in normal user contexts. Other pieces include an third-party COM object library DLL and a shared DLL with the .net Remoting interfaces. I've observed flat-out weird behavior with MSI, particularly on version upgrades. Between MS' anal strong-name implementation (specifically, the exact version check before loading a given assembly), a documented WiX/MSI bug that sees critical files erased on upgrades (essentially, if a file in the upgrade MSI has the same version number as the existing install, that file is deleted), and having to work around Wow64 virtualization (x86 MSI can only write to registry/HD locations via Wow64, yet x64 MSIs cannot run on x86 computers...), I am about ready to trash the whole thing and port it over to a different install system. What I am looking for on tips + tricks, techniques, or suggestions on how to properly do things so that I am not fighting with Windows Installer's twisted sense of logic. I am tired of fighting with WiX/MSI/Windows Installer. All it needs to do is place files and registry keys where I tell it to, upgrade them when appropriate, and don't delete anything until the user uninstalls. Instead, dependencies are deleted willy-nilly, bringing up a whole bunch of uncatchable exceptions (can't wrap a try{} block around function declarations) and GPF'ing the whole app. I am particularly interested in 'best practices' and examples regarding shared and dependency DLLs, and any tips on making sure if a file needs to go to GAC, that it actually goes to the GAC and stays there until it is appropriate to remove it. • Rendering a UIWebView in drawRect with loadHTMLString

  Hello there, I am having a problem with UIWebView. I'd like to render my own html code in it. When I add a webview as a subview and put in some html code it renders just fine. When it gets down to some optimized drawing of tableview cell with the drawRect method the problem pops up. Drawing UIView descendants works pretty well this way. It's even possible to load a URL with the loadRequest method, setting the delegate, conforming to the UIWebViewDelegate protocol and redrawing the table cell with setNeedsDisplay when webViewDidFinishLoad is called. It does show, but when it comes to loadHTMLString, nothing shows up, only a white rect. Due to performance reasons I have to do the drawing in the drawRect method. Any ideas? • DomainDataSource DataPager with silverlight 3 DataGrid & .Net RIA Services

  I have a simple datagrid example with silverlight 3, and am populating it with the .NET ria services using a DomainDataSource along with a DataPager declaratively (nothing in the code-behind), and am experiencing this problem: The LoadSize is 30, and the Page size is 15, and when the page is loaded, the 1st and 2nd page appear correctly, but when I go beyond the 2nd page, nothing shows up in the grid. This used to work in the silverlight 3 beta with the Mix 2009 preview of .NET Ria services, and I've got a really simple example and have verified that the Service on the web project gets called to load a new batch, but the grid doesn't show any data. Can anyone shed any light as to why grid displays data only for the initial load of data and not subsequent batches from the pager?   I'm trying to create a method on an EF 4 POCO repository called AddOrUpdate. The idea is that the business layer can pass in a POCO object and the persistence framework will add the object if it is new (not yet in the database), else will update the database (once SaveChanges() is called) with the new value. This is similar to some other questions I have asked about EF, but I'm only about 80% there in understanding this so please forgive partial duplication. The part I'm missing is how to update the object graph in my ObjectContext/associated ObjectSet for the passed-in business object once I have determined that the business object indeed already exists in the database (and now has been loaded thanks to TryGetObjectByKey). ApplyCurrentValues sounds sort of like what I want, but it only copies scalar values and doesn't seem intended to update the object graph in the ObjectContext/ObjectSet.   It bugs me to death that my viewcontroller, which happens to be a tableViewController, knows without being told that its property that is an NSArray or an NSDictionary holds the data that is to be loaded into the table for display. Seems like I should explicitly say something like: [self.tableView useData:self.MyArray]; Because, THAT'S WHAT I WANT TO DO! I want to have more than one array inside my tableViewController, and switch between one and the other programmatically. Please do not give me an answer like: "Never mind what you want to do, just set up two different tableViewControllers." No. I want to do it my way. I notice that when a tableViewController makes use of a searchViewController, you can do this: if (tableView == self.searchDisplayController.searchResultsTableView) { YES! I have even been able to do this: self.tableView = self.searchDisplayController.searchResultsTableView; [self.tableView reloadData]; But nowhere can I find how to set self.tableView back to the main datasource! I'm so tired of sifting, sifting through code for incomplete nuggets of enlightenment. Allow me to understate that Apple's documentation is grossly inadequate. It's astounding that so many slick iPhone programs came to be created. People said that once I went Mac, I'd never go back to Windows. Well, I'm anything but a convert.
