• How can I view my video card's temperature via SSH?

  I've finally managed to set up my two ATI Radeon 6950 video cards in my machine, but the cards can get quite hot. Based on the arrangement of my apartment, I want to be able to SSH into the machine an execute a command to find out the temperature. What I have tried so far is this... export DISPLAY=:0.0 sudo aticonfig --adapter=0 --od-gettemperature However, when I do that via SSH, I get the following error: ERROR - X needs to be running to perform ATI Overdrive(TM) commands If I turn on X forwarding when I remote into the machine, then it just seems to affect my local machine instead of the remote machine. Am I doing this correctly? Is there a better way to monitor my video card's temperature?

• Remote viewing on a Linux server?

  I have a Slackware Linux server that doesn't have a monitor. It doesn't run any GUIs. Is there a way to remotely access the screen? I always use SSH, but there are times where the SSH services fails and I can't do anything (nor even tell what the problem is). I use Teamviewer from my Windows computer to other PCs, but is there anything I can use to remotely view this from a Windows machine? I also want to see what it's doing at boot, before the SSH service starts.

  As the title states, when my CD/DVD drive is enable my computer freezes showing a diagonal patter on the monitor. This is what has been attempted (DF - didn't fix): (1) cleaned regsitry file - DF; (2) uninstalled and installed driver HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA T20L ATA - DF; Yelled profanities at the computer - DF but I felt better. I want to install OS 7 but this makes it much more complicated. It's appearing as a hardware issue to me, however, what do I know. Any suggestions?

• Where to look for regular scripts?

  It seems to me that our server freezes every 30 days around noon due to the huge utilization of xvda data transfer partition - writes are 50 times higher than normally (according to the health monitor in plesk). This seems to me as the reason why the apache & co becomes instable as (for example) all apache's processes are waiting to write their log (according to the service's full status). I am, however, unable to find any scheduled task that would be executed during that period. I have checked both cron and anacron setup and there is only one monthly anacron task which is not executed (according to the /var/log/cron - and there is nothing unusual) around noon. Are there any other places where to look for periodical processes? (I am just about to ask server's provider the same question about any external maintenance run around this time but I don't expect them to run anything time/resource consuming during the day.)

• Windows 7 slowing down during hard drive activity

  Sometimes when normally using my PC, it will (seemingly) randomly slow down, and maybe sometimes even freeze for several seconds. During this slow down period, it looks like a (I don't know which drive it is) hard drive is constantly being written to. During the last slow down, I started Windows's Ressource Monitor and found out that the System process was writing up to 10MB/s to a drive (I suspect it's the system drive, C:\, but I don't know for sure). I'm not doing anything unusual (at least, I don't think I am), and most of the time, it will work normally, but, as I said, it just randomly slows down for some times. Any ideas on what might be causing this and how I can prevent this from happening again? (I have a triple-core processor and 4GB of RAM. My system drive is a WD Caviar Black 500GB, my secondary, 'data' drive is a Samsung drive, which I don't know the model number of, but I can look it up. I can also post my full PC specs if needed.)

  I Had the following hardware setup: Phenom II X4 945 Asus M4A97 4GB DDR2 OCZ Radeon HD5850 OCZ Agility 2 120 GB Windows 7 x64 Pro Fully updated (latest drivers and windows update patches) Then I bought an used Phenom II X6 1090T and installed it without formatting. Since that my computer started BSODing almost every time I'm playing any game and with different error messages, like: page fault in non-paged area bad pool header the video memory manager found a problem error in dxgmm1.sys(or something like that) And when it doesn't BSOD the game simply crashes. I have tried: Updating BIOS Reseting BIOS to defaults Reinstalling Video Drivers Installing the latest DirectX All that's left is to do a full format and I don't want to do that since it's going to be a lot of work to fine tune windows to my preferences again. So is my "new" processor defective or do I really need to format the computer? Update: I use a (properly installed) custom cooler from Coolermaster and both the BIOS and the Open Hardware Monitor(Application) attest the CPU is not overheating, so I guess the CPU its defective and since I bought it from a guy over the Internet I'm probably screwed

• Windows always open top left

  I find this a highly annoying "feature" on a wide screen monitor that my mostly used apps - terminal and gedit always open directly under the top-left corner of my screen and I have to drag them to my eye position each and every-time. I have tried installing the CompizConfig Settings Manager and using the feature to position windows centre, but this has had no effect - the force feature here isn't working for me either. I can use e.g. gnome-terminal --geometry=140x50+50+50 for the terminal but this doesn't work for gedit. Any ideas? Thanks

• Hidden Periodic Screenshots on a corporate workstation?

  Can anyone recommend something that allows us to take hidden periodic screenshots of a workstation? We have a user who we believe is abusing his computer privileges. We have our suspicions that he may be playing games, etc. We need to monitor his screen without him being aware of it. Currently, the IT Department here is using Dameware Mini Remote Control to view his login sessions. But there isn't an option to set up automatic periodic screenshots. I'm hoping to find a tool that has this option and can be centrally managed as well. Thank you for your time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Windows 7 Desktop as Bluetooth Mixer

  I would like to stream all the audio from my Droid X2 to my desktop running Windows 7 via bluetooth. When I pair the two devices I can make this work but the audio plays through the internal speakers. I am actually wanting to listen to everything through a pair of bluetooth headphones. The end result would be that I could listen to music from my phone but easily pause it to listen to audio from the desktop instead. So far I have not had any luck. I thought about connecting the line out to the line in so I could monitor the line in from my headphones. My current setup is wiring the phone to the line in and then monitoring the line in through the headphones. I'm just wanting to eliminate the wire and go wireless the whole way. Is there something in Windows that prevents it from taking an inbound audio stream and sending it out another device?

  I run Windows 7 x86 Home Premium. I have an installed physical memory of 4 GB, out of which, 2.96 GB is usable (My Computer Properties). I checked the memory usage using Resource Monitor and found 3036 MB / 4096 MB is available. I noticed that 1060 MB is unavailable since it is reserved by some "Hardware component(s)". I would like to know which hardware component is using this 1060 MB. Is there any way or tool to identify this? Note: I know that Windows 7 Home Premium x86 supports a maximum of 4GB RAM.

• What is making iTunes stop playing when my computer idles?

  I've got a rare weekend with nothing to do, so I'm getting some housework done. I have iTunes playing for some background noise. Every 20 minutes or so, it just stops playing; if I move the mouse it starts again. I'm on Windows 7 64-bit. My power settings have my monitor turning off at 10 minutes and hard drives at 20. Both sleep and hibernate are disabled. "Aha!", you say, "Clearly when the hard drive is turned off iTunes is stopping!" Not so. I fiddled with the settings and changed them to make the hard drive sleep in 5 minutes, and iTunes kept playing for the 7 minutes I watched it. I'm currently trying to see what happens if I set the hard drive to never turn off, but I'd prefer to leave it at 20 minutes to save minor amounts of energy. What other settings could be the culprit?

• Windows 7 fresh install blank screen

  I've just installed Win7 Ultimate to my PC. During the install it reboots a couple of times, but 2nd or 3rd reboot I see the "Starting Windows..." message, but followed by a black screen. No mouse cursor, taskbar, anything. The monitor power light is blue (indicating it has a signal) and it was displaying the setup wizard with no problems whatsoever. Has anyone else witnessed this phenomenon? Many thanks in advance. UPDATE I booted in safe mode, and got a screen saying "Setup is preparing your computer for first use". That's brilliant, although a message box has popped up over that saying: Windows cannot complete instlalation in Safe Mode. To continue installing Windows, restart the computer. So I don't really have the opportunity to do any cleverness with drivers or anything. I guess I could try getting a different version of Win7 (I'm installing from an MSDN DVD).

• Is there a free program that can detect which device on my network is causing lag?

  I'm on a small business network, and rarely we experience really extreme latency. I have no idea what device might be causing the lag, and wanted to know if there was a piece of software that could detect it. I know about some softwares like wireshark, which maybe do what I'm asking? If so it's too complicated to understand. I run the program and I have no idea what I'm looking at, or what parameters to give it. So something that can monitor traffic, as well as describe it in such a way that even a not so network savvy individual can interpret.

• Taskbar Disappears Over Remote Desktop Connection When Outside Local Network

  I've got a machine on my home network running Windows Server 2012 (Based on Win8) and rather than attach a monitor I remote desktop in and it works fine on my local network. The problem is, when I try to access it from outside my local network the taskbar disappears completely. When I minimize an application rather than minimize to the taskbar it simply closes the window as small as it can as if the taskbar never existed (see photos at ). I've messed with the connection properties (show/hide desktop background, etc.) with no luck. I've used the following methods to remote in and they all are fine when on the local network and taskbar-less from outside: Remote Desktop Connection on Mac Remote Desktop Connection on Windows Jump Desktop on iOS using RDP To access the computer from outside my local network I'm using a Linksys router and mapping to the server IP, port 3389. • Is there a feature in Nagios that allows Memory between checks?

  There are various instances where there are values I want to monitor with Nagios, and I don't care as much about the value itself, but rather how it compares to the previous value. For instance, I wrote one to check the fail counters in OpenVZ. In this case, I didn't care about the value that much, but rather I cared if the value increased. Another example might be switch ports, I would be most interested to get alerted about the change of state of a port (Although perhaps a trap would be better for this one). For my OpenVZ script, I used a temp file, but I am wondering if there is a better way? Maybe Nagios has some variables that plugins (check scripts) can access that are persistent across checks?

• Internet compression proxy for low speed broadband?

  I live in a rural location, using high-latency wireless off a local ISP's tower. My speed tests vary day to day, but I can get around 1Mb up/down. The problem is, I work with large files, uploading and downloading (HD videos, development software, etc.). It can be painful to wait sometimes. Plus I do some side contract game development, and it can be very difficult to playtest with other developers (200ms ping is a good day for me). Now, obviously it's not going to be easy to solve the latency problem without different wireless hardware. But speedwise, I am wondering if I can use some kind of compression technology on a proxy. For instance, my work computer has full access to a 26Mb down, 10Mb up connection, that is totally unused at night and the weekends. If I could run some kind of compression technology on our server, and use it as a proxy to route to my home computer, I could stand to gain some major speed. I realize that by bogging down a system with compression, I could potentially lose whatever speed gain I had. But the proxy server is a quad core xeon, and the receiving computer is a pretty decent i7 computer, so that shouldn't be a concern. I found http://toonel.net/ but it seems more geared toward very slow narrowband users, like dial-up. Plus, I would prefer to just be able to point my browser to a proxy server, rather then install software on my client machine. EDIT I thought about my question a little more, and realize I am going to need to install software on my client in order to decompress, and possible compress (for uploading). That's not a huge deal.

• Windows 7 Sharing issue on RAID 5 Array(s)

  Greetings all, I'm having a very odd error with a windows 7 ultimate x64 system. The network system setup is as follows: 2x XP Pro 32 Bit machines 1x Vista ultimate x64 machine 2x Windows 7 x64 Ultimate machines all chained into 1x 16 port netgear prosafe gigabit switch, the windows 7 & vista machines are duplexed. Also there is a router (netgear Rangemax) chained off the switch I am basically using one of the windows 7 machines to host storage & stream media to other machines. To this end i have put 2x 3tb hardware RAID 5 arrays in it and assorted other spare disks which i have shared the roots of. The unusual problems start when i am getting Access denied, Please contact administrator for permission blah blah blah when trying to access both of the RAID 5 arrays but not the other stand alones. I have checked the permission settings, i have added everyone to the read permission for the root, i have tried moving things into sub directories then sharing them. I have tried various setting combinations in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa and always the same. I have tried flushing caches all round, disabling and re-enabling shares & sharing after restart as well as several other things & the result is always the same... No problem on individual drives but access denied on both the RAID arrays from both XP & Vista & Windows 7 machines. One interesting quirk that may lead to an answer is that there is no "offline status" information regarding the folders when you select the RAID 5s from a windows 7 machine yet there is on the normal drives which say they are online. It is as if the raid is present but turned off or spun down but as far as i was aware windows will spin an array back up on network request and on the machine itself the drives seem to be online and can be accessed.   up front -- definitely NOT a mission-critical kind of question. after a 'spring cleaning' of my local office, i've ended up with two 'spare' GigE switches at my home/office -- one managed, capable of VLANs, QoS, etc, and the other unmanaged. i've got more ports than i need. in fact EACH switch has more total ports than i need. but, since i can't have these just sitting around not doing SOMETHING ... ;-) i'm interested in ideas for best combined use of these switches. my local topology is simple: [ net ] -- [ adsl2 modem ] -- [linux firewall/router/DNS ] _______________| | [ some arrangement of the 2 GigE switches ] | ( ... stuff on the lan ... ) [WAP1] [voip ATA] [printer] [desktop1] [mail server] [Xen server [desktop2] ( mostly dev, [desktop3] + file server [desktop4] + media server)] the MailServer is a production mail server the XenServer serves some low vol to the 'net; the MediaServer guest serves ONLY to the LAN is there, e.g., any performance value in segmenting off any of the LAN using the managed switch (VLAN? QoS tagging? something?), feeding the rest into the connected unmanaged switch? or should i simply use one of the switches & be done with it, and use the other for a coffee-cup stand?

Preferably track computer usage while user is logged in as "working" + state which task was done in that time. If I have no all-in-one solution, I will go with RealVNC for screen sharing. • Move a window back into the visible area in Xubuntu?

  I have this annoying little problem on my laptop that sometimes after I have used a external monitor (with higher resolution) some applications place them self outside the visible area of my desktop. So the question is how do I move them back into the visible area? (Please note, no part of the window is visible so I can't use the mouse.) Is there some app that can give me focus to move a application to the mouse pointer or something like that? Please note that I'm running Xubuntu (XFCE) on this laptop. Thanks

• Internet Explorer8 on Windows 7 - file download results in "C:\ location not accessible."

  Ok, an odd problem. For one user on a Windows 7 x64 system, attempting to download a file with Internet Explorer 8 results in a error "C:\ location not accessible. Access is denied." even though the target location is not on the C:\ drive. No other users have the problem and no other browsers do. The user does not remember deleting any folders recently, and it looks like no new software has been installed. A checkdisk comes up clean. Any ideas? • Computer won't stay powered up

  I have just tried to turn my PC on this morning and it won't stay powered up. It will come on as normal for about 5 seconds, not quite long enough for the monitor to wake up. Then it will power off. After about 2 seconds it will start again, it will continue like this until I pull out the plug. Plugging it in again doesn't restart the cycle although pressing the power button does. I have tried to clear the cmos but beyond that I have no ideas. It was working perfectly when I put it in hibernate last night.

  Well this is the first Laptop I have ever worked on with a dedicated video card. So, there is no video going to the laptops monitor or to an external. Ripped it apart found the gpu and now am stuck. I cant decide if its the gpu that has gone out or the motherboard. Any one have any suggestions? If it were a desktop I would throw in one of my spare video cards. Mainly I don't want to order the video card and eat the $50 if its the motherboard.
